of experience. She has some wonderful suggestions for improving our time with

the students and has enthusiasm for helping each student do their best. She

I write these words on Valentine’s Day. In the midst of flowers, candy, cards, dinners and other celebrations that happen on this day, you may need a story. Here is one of my favorite Valentine stories.

Little Chad was a shy, quiet boy. Day after day, his mother agonized when she watched the children coming home from school. While they laughed and talked to each other and hung onto each other, Chad always lagged behind - alone.

One day, Chad came home and told his mother that he’d like to make Valentines for everyone in his class. Her heart sank. She thought, I wish he wouldn’t do that! They never include him in anything. Nevertheless, she decided she would go along with her son. So she purchased the paper and glue and crayons, and for three weeks, night after night, Chad painstakingly made 35 valentines.

Valentine’s Day dawned, and Chad was beside himself with excitement as he started out for school. That afternoon, Chad’s mother placed cookies and milk on the table. Then she looked out the window and saw the children coming home from school. There they came, laughing and having the best time. And, as always, there was Chad in the rear, alone. But walking a little faster than usual. His arms were empty. Obviously, he had not received any valentines, and she fully expected him to break into tears when he got inside. She choked back her own tears, saying as he came in, Mommy has some cookies and milk for you. But he hardly heard her words. He just marched right on by, his face aglow. And all he could say was: “Not a one. Not a one.” Her heart sank.

And then, he added: “I didn’t forget a one, Mommy. Not a single one.”

Renovation Update- February 2012

The project is progressing well and remains within budget and on track for November 2012 completion. The steel installation has been completed for the administrative area, and the new front entry has connected the structure to the existing building at the chapel. The metal for the roof has been installed along with the curbs for HVAC equipment. After a few final touches, brick installation will begin along the front of the church. Roofing work is also scheduled to begin within the next couple of weeks, and that will “dry in” the administrative suite and entry area so the remaining inside work can be completed.

The contractors have removed the clerestory windows from the original gym roof. New metal is now covering those openings, and several roofing panels that were corroded beyond use from previous water leaks have also been replaced. Roofing is scheduled over the next few weeks for the gym, and that will allow the electrical, fire protection and insulation contractors to begin their inside “dry” work. The steel is being installed around the stage area and will soon begin for the AV booths, storage areas and other parts of the worship space. The elevator “pit” has been completed, and the original doors to the fitness room have been blocked in. After the renovation, the fitness room will be accessed from the new entry area by the chapel.

Despite the challenges created by the wet winter weather, construction on the St. Clair side has shown much progress. The slabs have been poured for the student area and gathering space. The restroom and kitchen rough plumbing has been completed and slabs have been poured there. The “heavy” steel for the gathering space has been installed and “light” steel construction will begin soon. Remaining slabs are scheduled to be poured in soon, and steel for the student center and other areas between the buildings will be erected in the coming weeks. The renovated gym space will soon be joined to the existing building on two levels as the area between the buildings is filled in with structure. After construction is completed, ramps will provide easy access to the new facility, and the new elevator will provide for easy movement between floors on the west end of the building.

Beginning February 27, the pumps on our existing chillers will be replaced with larger units to accommodate the new facilities. During this week, we will have no cooling capacity for the entire building. The heating boilers will not be affected, so we should experience no issues as long as our normal cool winter weather returns! The contractors expect to have one chiller operational again by Sunday March 4th, so we should be comfortable during Sunday worship regardless of the outside temperatures. We appreciate your understanding, especially if unseasonable temperatures cause the facility to be a bit warmer during that week of February 27.

The excitement and anticipation is growing as more of the new structure is completed. Continue to pray that God will use this facility for His glory.
