Message from Pastor Abby

Lent is here, or maybe not. Depending on how quickly the USPS delivers our bulk mailed news-letters. Lent begins with Ash Wednesday on February 26th and ends on Easter Sunday, April 12th.

It is often said that there are 40 days during Lent. A few years ago one of my kids questioned this when they looked at the number of weeks between the dates and pointed out that it was more than 40 days. That 40 days does not include any of the Sundays during Lent. Still today use this time of Lent as a time of fasting and of reflection just as the early church did. But, in their wisdom Sundays should not be observed in this way, but rather as a day to celebrate. You see, each Sunday should be a “little Easter” where we celebrate the resurrection each week!

During seminary, I worked at a church where they had the tradition of taking an Easter Egg the Sunday before Ash Wednesday and wrote the word “Alleluia” on a piece of paper, put it in the egg, and then put it away for the rest of Lent. For those weeks, Alleluia was never used in worship. They took seriously the task of Lent to be reflective and to fast, and took away this word Alleluia because it is a term of great joy that we refrain from using as we await the Kingdom of God. I appreciated their view on Lent, although, for me, that celebration of a “little Easter” once a week is more important during this time of reflection to interrupt this serious time with joy.

Just like Lent being interrupted by these moments of celebration on Sundays, our lives can be full of difficult times. But, in the midst of those difficult moments, days, months, years, all of them are inter-rupted by God. God interrupts every difficult thing with grace, with life, with little Easters, and with resurrection!

Lent is 40 days. During this time I would encourage you to take seriously the task of fasting, of reflection, or possibly adding more prayer, more study, more service. During these tasks, I expect God to interrupt you in glorious ways, God will interrupt these times too with grace and with resurrection. Lent is a time when we can be so incredibly blessed by God who interrupts our life, interrupts our fasting, in-terrupts our difficult times, our good times, all the times.

I pray that in all you do this Lenten season that you are blessed. That in your trials and joys, in your sorrows and delights, that you will be blessed by the one who continues to surprise us, the one who cannot be contained in a tomb!

Blessings,

Pastor Abby

Mobile Hope in the Dayton Park, just down the road from Immanuel, is in need of Homework Help volunteers on Monday afternoons from 4:15-6:15pm. Mobile Hope is new in Dayton and they are creating similar programming to Mobile Hope in Maple Hill Estates. Approximately 300 kids live in the Dayton Park and most of them come from homes where English is not the first language spoken. They have a great need for help with homework. This is a wonderful oppor-tunity for Immanuel to reach out into our community!

We are still looking for a few tutors on Monday afternoon!

Contact Pastor Abby if you are interested in helping.

Dear Brothers and Sisters at Immanuel,

Thank you for your *contribution to Mobile Hope! We are grateful for you and for your support in the work that we do in mobile home communities all around the Twin Cities.

As we continue to expand and grow, we want you to know that it is through gifts like these that Mobile Hope can touch the lives of students and families looking for a better future. Education, healthy activities, connect-ing families to resources, and faith development are our four pillars and through gifts like this you are a part of making that happen! Thank you!

Sincerely, Brian and Jill

Mobile Hope

In Unshakable Hope, Max Lucado unpacks 12 of the Bible’s most significant prom-

ises, equipping you to overcome difficult circumstances by keeping your focus on

the hope found in the promises of Scripture rather than dwelling on the problems in

front of you. For every problem in life, God has given you a promise. Sign up to attend in the narthex. Books are $13 and are available by the sign-up.

Meets every Tuesday morning!

LOOKING FOR A WAY TO SERVE? PROVIDE FELLOWSHIP TREATS!

Starting in March we have a need for Fellowship Servers. This is a wonderful way to serve your community at Immanuel. It doesn’t need to be complicated or involve a lot of different foods: it can be as simple as some cookies or donuts. Not sure about making coffee? Look at the sign-up and see that some weeks someone is willing to help with that, just pick one of those noted weeks. It’s not scary, it’s fun, and every-one loves the person who brings goodies on Sunday mornings.
