The Messenger of Grace September 2019 Vol 20 Issue 9 St. Michael & All Angles — Sunday, September 29 September 29 th is one of the few Sundays in the “after Pentecost” season on which a special commemo- ration falls. The Day of St. Michael and All Angels is sometimes known as Michaelmas. Falling a week or less after the autumnal equinox it often signaled the beginning of the harvest season. In the British isles, this day often marked the first term of the academic year in universities and of certain courts. Even our own Supreme Court reflects this tradition as its term begins on the first Monday in October. The day is named for Michael the archangel one of only three angels mentioned in the Bible (excluding you know who). His ranking as the most powerful may be presumed from his name Michael which means “Who is like God?Michael is chosen because the texts that speak of him cast him as the protector and guardian of God’s people and as one who does battle with (you know who) on God’s behalf. For this reason Michael is often depicted wearing armor and wielding a sword or spear. He is a figure of judgment as he is also often depicted bearing balance scales. St. Michael (like St. George who also did battle with a dragon) is often regarded as the patron saint of the military and/or police officers, so sometimes special services or “blue masses” are celebrated on this day. The second most mentioned or ranking angel is Gabriel who appears in Daniel and in the stories of the Annunciation of Jesus. Gabriel’s role conforms most closely to the meaning of the term “angel” which in the Biblical languages means messenger. The name Gabr iel means “God is my strength.” It is as mes- sengers that angels in the Bible are shown most often interacting with humans. Many legends associate them with the various prophets including Mohammed. A third angelic figure is Raphael [meaning “It is God who heals”] who is mentioned in the deuteroca- nonical book (Apocrypha) of Tobit. He is recognized by several Christian traditions, appears in a num- ber of Jewish rabbinic texts. Some identify Raphael as the angel who stirs healing waters of the pool of Siloam. Islam portrays Raphael as the angel whose trumpet blast initiates the resurrection of the dead. Various other names of angels are mentioned in religious texts but the material is quite limited and there is little consensus beyond these three. We invite you to bring any angel figurines or ornaments that we might place around the sanctuary to represent the “all angels” aspect of the day. Please bring them by Sunday September 22 so that we can have them “in position” for Michaelmas—and make sure they are well marked so that they can be re- turned to you. It would also be appropriate for worshippers on this day to wear angel pins, feathers, or even wings! Noting the tradition of the “blue masses” we invite you to submit names of law enforce- ment professionals for remembrance in our prayers on St. Michael’s and All Angels. The Rev. James G. September 2019 Vol 20 Issue 9

St. Michael & All Angles — Sunday, September 29 September 29th is one of the few Sundays in the “after Pentecost” season on which a special commemo-

ration falls. The Day of St. Michael and All Angels is sometimes known as Michaelmas. Falling a week

or less after the autumnal equinox it often signaled the beginning of the harvest season. In the British

isles, this day often marked the first term of the academic year in universities and of certain courts. Even our own Supreme Court reflects this tradition as its term begins on the first Monday in October.

The day is named for Michael the archangel one of only three angels mentioned in the Bible (excluding

you know who). His ranking as the most powerful may be presumed from his name

Michael which means “Who is like God?” Michael is chosen because the texts that

speak of him cast him as the protector and guardian of God’s people and as one who

does battle with (you know who) on God’s behalf. For this reason Michael is often

depicted wearing armor and wielding a sword or spear. He is a figure of judgment as

he is also often depicted bearing balance scales. St. Michael (like St. George who also

did battle with a dragon) is often regarded as the patron saint of the military and/or

police officers, so sometimes special services or “blue masses” are celebrated on this

day.

The second most mentioned or ranking angel is Gabriel who appears in Daniel and in the stories of the

Annunciation of Jesus. Gabriel’s role conforms most closely to the meaning of the term “angel” which

in the Biblical languages means messenger. The name Gabriel means “God is my strength.” It is as mes-

sengers that angels in the Bible are shown most often interacting with humans. Many legends associate

them with the various prophets including Mohammed.

A third angelic figure is Raphael [meaning “It is God who heals”] who is mentioned in the deuteroca-

nonical book (Apocrypha) of Tobit. He is recognized by several Christian traditions, appears in a num-

ber of Jewish rabbinic texts. Some identify Raphael as the angel who stirs healing waters of the pool of

Siloam. Islam portrays Raphael as the angel whose trumpet blast initiates the resurrection of the dead.

Various other names of angels are mentioned in religious texts but the material is quite limited and there

is little consensus beyond these three.

We invite you to bring any angel figurines or ornaments that we might place around the sanctuary to

represent the “all angels” aspect of the day. Please bring them by Sunday September 22 so that we can

have them “in position” for Michaelmas—and make sure they are well marked so that they can be re-

turned to you. It would also be appropriate for worshippers on this day to wear angel pins, feathers, or

even wings! Noting the tradition of the “blue masses” we invite you to submit names of law enforce-

ment professionals for remembrance in our prayers on St. Michael’s and All Angels.

Birthday Hymns We know that many people have favorite hymns (and some even have many fa-

vorite hymns). We try to include most all of the favorites that have been made

known throughout the year. But sometimes individuals are not at worship the

week their favorite is sung. To try and ‘sync’ hymn and hymn lover together be-

ginning next month, those whose birthdays will be included in the prayers (that

is on that Sunday or the week following) can request a hymn for that Sunday

and it will be used that day.

You may submit your chosen hymn at any time but please do so at least two

weeks before your birthday. Forms are available in the narthex. No, you don’t have to pick the same one

each year!

ALTAR GUILD TEAMS:

Team # 1: Ruth & Grace Maraglio, Diane McDermott

Team # 2: Alison Tomasulo, Ann Seybold, Diane LaLena

Team # 3: Adele Hofmann, Terry Freyvogel, Kathy Kugler

Grace’s Altar Guild will meet on October 26, 2019.

Altar Caregivers needed The Altar Guild is looking for volunteers. As a volunteer, you would have the opportunity to learn all

about the behind the scenes work at Grace and assist the church by preparing the altar, paraments, and

banners each week for the Sunday Service. Anyone wishing to serve on Altar Guild please contact Pas-

tor Krauser or Adele Hofmann. It’s a wonderful way to give back to Grace and serve the Lord.

Altar Flowers and Memorials Our Altar Guild treasury has been merged with the church accounts. When making memorial or seasonal

donations for altar flowers, candles or the like you should make checks out to Grace Lutheran Church nd

put the purpose on the memo line, so that the counters can record the contribution properly.

Confirmation Classes We will soon resume our confirmation program. We look forward to the confirma-

tion of four students on All Saints’ Sunday November 3rd.

We do not anticipate any new students joining the class this year. If you know of

any 6th grade (or older) students who have not yet begun confirmation studies who

should be invited to join the class, please let us know. This year's track is primar-

ily a study of the elements of the Small Catechism and some church history.

Confirmation classes are generally held weekly. We will meet after church on

September 15th to set a meeting day. This will also give families a chance to look

at your school and sports calendars. Classes for those not being confirmed this

year, will most likely begin in October.

Busy Bees… We want to extend thanks to those who have been at work here throughout the summer months:

We thank those who brought cut flowers to grace the chancel; those who moved furniture before and af-

ter the floor waxing; for those who donated food and school supplies for the NewLIFE Center; to those

who have cleaned up branches fallen from trees and those who have maintained our garden areas.

Community Notices A friend of Terry Freyvogel is selling her home in North Bellmore and has asked if our church would

post her home on an email to see if anyone knows of someone who would be interested. The home is

listed on Zillow for viewing: 1142 Vollkommer Pl, North Bellmore, NY 11710 | MLS #3152266 | Zil-

low. Please let Terry Freyvogel know if you know of someone who is interested.

ELCA Declares Itself a “Sanctuary Church” You may have heard that in a key action taken August 7th, the 2019 ELCA Churchwide Assembly voted

to approve a memorial that declares the ELCA a sanctuary church. The ELCA is the first North Ameri-

can denomination to declare itself a sanctuary church body. Our synod had made a similar declaration

and forwarded this memorial for action by our national church body.

As a sanctuary church the ELCA is committed to serving and supporting migrant children and families

in communities across the country.
