Pastoral Reflections

Through the power of the Holy Spirit, the Church contin-ues to grow in numbers. Luke spoke earlier of the remark-able generosity of the community of faith. They made their resources available for the less fortunate. Among these unfortunates were widows; they were especially vul-nerable because they often had no other means of sup-port. Jesus continues his “farewell discourse” by making a strong connection between loving him and keeping his commandments. Throughout the passage, Jesus will use words such as commandments, word, and words. The reader should understand all these terms as synonyms. They represent the totality of what Jesus says and what he reveals about God. Another advocate. One of the ways Jesus will main-tain a presence in the world after he returns to the Father is by sending another advocate. The Greek term is parakletos, which is often translated as “paraclete.” Jesus specifies that he will send “another advocate,” indicating that he himself was the first one. This advocate plays a role similar to a defense attorney. He is a teacher who bears witness to Jesus and serves as a prosecutor of the world. He is the Spirit of truth whom the world will re-ject, but the disciples will accept him because they know him. I will not leave you orphans. It is important for Jesus to reassure his disciples that they will not be left alone

when he returns to the Father. One way that Jesus will be present will be in the form of the advocate. Another way is through his Resurrection. The world will not see this, but the disciples will. This new form of life will also be extended to the disciples. All this will result in the under-standing, on the part of the disciples, of the divine mutu-ality that exists between God, Jesus, and the disciples. Jesus is in the Father, the disciples are in Jesus, and Jesus is in the disciples. This is how the disciples will share in the Father’s love. Keep my commandments. Jesus makes it very clear that simply knowing his commandments is not enough. The commandments have to be observed and put into practice. This is how the disciples demonstrate their love for Jesus: by keeping his commandments. Those who love Jesus, and therefore keep his commandments, are also assured that they will be loved by God. In addition to this, Jesus will also love the disciples and, in this process, reveal himself to them. All of this is aimed at encouraging the disciples to understand that Jesus’ departure will, in fact, be a saving event that will benefit them all.

Mother’s Day Gratitude Mother’s Day: Our Blessed Mother In the month of May, the Church calls us to open our hearts in a special way to Mary. Her presence in our lives is a moth-erly presence. We call her Our Blessed Mother. Indeed, from the Cross, Jesus gave her to us as our Mother and entrusted us to her as her children. Jesus’ words to John, the beloved disci-ple, were also addressed to all of us: Behold your mother! From the cross, Jesus gave us the beautiful gift of his mother to be our mother too. He made his mother the mother of all the members of his Mystical Body, the Church. Jesus invites us to accept Mary as our mother and to respond to her moth-erly love as true children. Mary always leads us to Jesus, her Son. When we go to her, we always meet Jesus, our Savior. She helps us follow her Son more faithfully. God has entrust-ed to her the role of maternal intercession for us. She is Our Mother of Perpetual Help: she sees our needs and is ready to come to our aid. Mary presents our needs to her Son and in-tercedes continually on our behalf. It is very fitting that we celebrate Mother’s Day. As we honor the Mother of God, our spiritual mother, we also honor our earthly mothers. Excerpt taken from: http://www.todayscatholicnews.org/2012/05/may-mother%E2%80%99s-day-and-mary/

On Mother’s Day, we remember with gratitude and affection our mothers, living and deceased. Let us pray for all our moth-ers. And let us remember that we have a Mother in heaven, the Blessed Virgin Mary. We continue to rejoice with her during this Easter season. May the Mother given to us by Christ on the cross be ever at our side! We fly to thy patronage, O holy Mother of God; despise not our petitions in our necessities but deliver us always from all dangers, O glorious and blessed Vir-gin.” Excerpt taken from: http://www.todayscatholicnews.org/2012/05/may-mother%E2%80%99s-day-and-mary/
