Developing a Leadership Foundation for Phoebe’s Future
Dear Friends of Phoebe:
leadership
Scott R. Stevenson, President and CEO
www.phoebe.org
A signifi cant outcome from our Leadership approach is that key leaders on both the Ministry/Business Council and Leadership Development Forums work together on small project teams to research and solve real-world ministry and business challenges facing Phoebe. Projects completed or underway include:
“To know that I am part of an organization that values employees to this degree and is
focused on their growth is a truly wonderful feeling. This experience has led me to take inventory of my life and appreciate the leadership growth of
which I am capable. The opportunity to build trusting, meaningful relationships with other team members
has been invaluable. I believe this has also helped me be more effective in my role here at Phoebe.”
“I found that this forum was very interactive, insightful and most importantly helpful and translatable to everyday work situations. I think the mixture of interesting books, discussions, and project teams
made it far more appealing than other programs.”

PHOEBE Short-Term Rehab
A TRADITION OF EXCELLENCE. A PASSION FOR CARING.
By Larry Minnix, President and Chief Executive Offi cer, LeadingAge.
In light of these new developments, it is of vital importance for us to take up our responsibility as advocates.
We must engage in a new advocacy, and make the case for creating the right policy for the right reasons—policy based on our experience and the evidence that what we do is effective, effi cient and good for the economy; policy based on longstanding values.

Volunteering doesn’t just make you feel good, it also improves your health because it helps you make new contacts, develop new friendships, and feel connected to the greater community. Many studies have documented a correlation between volunteering and positive aging among older adults.
Phoebe’s volunteers provide essential services to our residents, helping us to accomplish our mission. Many of them continue to volunteer well into their 90’s and offer much of their time to our communities.

Phoebe’s Innovative TeleHealth Program Provides Enhanced Care Options for Seniors
Benefi ts of TeleHealth One may think seeing a doctor in-person would be preferred for seniors; however, virtual doctors’ visits have many advantages over in-person visits:
Worried about travel? The stress of a three-to-fi ve hour transportation process required for an in-person visit can prevent residents and their family members from pursuing regularly scheduled appointments with their specialists. Virtual visits allow for regular appoint-ments and improved care.
Phoebe’s staff is “in the know.” Phoebe’s Chief Medical Offi cer, Dr. Thomas Renaldo, oversees the program and Phoebe’s staff has received specialized training for all aspects of the TeleHealth program.
Worried about the doctor not understanding the issues? As part of this program, the resident, family members, nurses, and therapists are interviewed prior to the TeleHealth session. This communication pro-cess allows the physician to receive a comprehensive picture of the resident’s progress. A licensed nurse is with the resident for the entire visit.
The program keeps our residents healthier. Outcomes seen at Phoebe include reduced readmissions to hospitals, reduced overall health care costs, and improved outcomes for patients.

Phoebe is one of only two skilled nursing facilities in the country to use this technology.
Dr. Thomas Renaldo, Chief Medical Offi cer for Phoebe is integral to Phoebe’s partnership with LVHN and the TeleHealth Program.
“As the nation’s healthcare system continues to evolve,
I believe Phoebe’s implementation of new technologies
will enhance the quality of life and outcomes for
those we serve. Medicare does not reimburse
Phoebe Ministries for any TeleHealth services we offer.
However, it’s the right thing to do as far
as senior healthcare goes, and Phoebe is known
for doing the right thing.”
Watch for more news in the future about the expansion of Phoebe’s TeleHealth service line!

Phoebe Ministries’ Benefi t Golf Tournament Raises Over $100,000 For Charitable Care
On Monday August 6, one hundred and thirty six golfers teed off at Berkshire County Club in the Phoebe
Ministries Golf Tournament, which raised over $100,000 for charitable care. Golfers played and participated in closest to the pin, longest drive, and straightest drive contests on the picturesque course.
The tournament raised over $100,000 for the second year in a row. All proceeds are used to support charitable care expenses at Phoebe. Since its founding in 1903, Phoebe has provided care to residents regardless of their ability to pay. For the second year in a row, charity care levels will exceed $8 million.
Cura Hospitality, Morefi eld Communications, and Stevens & Lee joined Phoebe Ministries as Principal Tournament Sponsors. Prizes were awarded to the top men’s and mixed foursomes. The fi rst place men’s team was represented by Xpedex/Georgia Pacifi c. The top fi nishing mixed foursome was represented by Highmark Blue Shield.
Residents, Juvie Heintzelman, Carol Conrad and Winnie Knouse enjoy their time in the newly renovated second fl oor library at Devitt House.
