THE MESSENGER A Newsletter for Supporters of Immanuel Christian School Vol. 28 No. 18 January 22, 2016 FROM THE PRINCIPAL: On behalf of the staff and students at ICS, we would like to extend our condolences to Julia, Ashley, Kevin and Shannon Wiersema and their family with the passing away of their mom. They have been bravely attending school all the time during their mom’s illness and keeping up with their work. We wish you the Lord’s nearness and care as you carry on in your lives with this empty place. We pray that you will receive much support from the communion of saints as you experience that here at ICS. As we are already deep into the month of January, the board and administration have started to look towards next school year. As you may have read elsewhere in the Messenger, Mrs. Teitsma and Mrs. Cavers shared with us the exciting news that they are each expecting babies this summer. Congratulations! We pray for a blessing on their pregnancies. While they hope to finish this school year, that also does means that we definitely have openings for next year. While some of you may have noticed our ad in Clarion, word of mouth is still the best advertising; if you have any leads on teachers, please let administration or the board know. This coming week is the last week of first semester classes for students in grades 9 – 12. Grade 12 students will be writing their Pre- Calculus and Essentials Math achievement test next week. Grade 12 Essential Math Achievement Tests will be written on Wednesday, January 27, while students in Pre-Calculus 40S will be writing their achievement tests on Thursday, Jan. 28. Our grade 10 students will also be writing their 2 computer exams before the official exam schedule; Data Collection on January 27 and Desktop Publishing on January 28. Both these exams will be written in the Computer Room. The “Official Exam” schedule for I.C.S. runs from Friday, Jan. 29 – Thursday, Feb. 4 (see below). This Messenger also includes General Information for parents and students as well as some tips for exam success. We wish you all the best with your preparations and exams.

Vol. 28 No. 18January 22, 2016

FROM THE PRINCIPAL:On behalf of the staff and students at ICS, we would like to extend our condolences to Julia, Ashley, Kevin and Shannon Wiersema and their family with the passing away of their mom.

Grade 12 students will be writing their Pre-Calculus and Essentials Math achievement test next week.

During this coming week students will also be reviewing for exams. These can be valuable classes for students if they participate fully in class exercises. At the end of a semester this can be somewhat difficult, but it is best to review while the teacher is there to help.

Since this coming week is the last full week in January, staff is also busy with preparations for I Love to Read Month. Due to exam week, I Love to Read Month will be a shortened reading month … only 3 weeks, but I’m sure it won’t lack the excitement! Stay tuned for more details!

Operation Quebec Update

Page 5: THE MESSENGER - immanuelchristian.ca€¦  · Web viewGrade 12 Essential Math Achievement ... song “Lullaby” and learned about chord progressions. ... and word wall words will

There will be an information package coming home soon to those students who plan to be in Grade 11/12 French next year (2016-2017). This package will provide an initial budget and a proposed itinerary for the planned trip to Quebec in May of 2017. I hope to schedule a meeting in mid-February to go over this and continue planning for this event.

Our ongoing fundraiser, school cleaning, is going fairly well. When we have a school cleaning week, a sign-up chart is posted on the wall in Mr. Nienhuis’ room. The students are asked to sign up for 1 slot during the week to help out. We have over $2000 in the bank, and the bulk of that money has come from the school cleaning, so we would like to be able to continue with this. If all help out a little bit, we can prevent the task from burdening some. Our next school cleaning slot is next week (January 25 to 29). Thanks again to those who have “hired” us, as well as to our faithful student helpers.

Mr. Nienhuis***

Sports Corner: It was a fairly quiet week on the sports front. The Junior Girls were in a tournament in Lockport

last weekend. They lost their first game to Teulon and then rebounded to defeat Bernie Wolfe in their second game. That put them into the 3rd place game against Sargent Park. This proved to be a challenging game for the girls, and they ended up losing. Considering it was their first game action of the year, the girls acquitted themselves well.

The Varsity Boys defeated Calvin in the home half of their back-to-back set of games. The Varsity Girls lost both of their games last week, falling to Faith on Monday and to Linden on Wednesday. There were some positive signs, however, as the girls were right with Linden until halftime. Considering the girls are in Tier 1 this year, where the competition is stiffer, progress can be seen. The JV Girls and Boys lost to Linden. The girls lost by 10 points in an exciting match, while the boys provided solid effort the entire game.

The Week Ahead . . .

There have been a few changes to the schedule due to some requested game changes by other schools. We will be sending revised schedules to the affected team members and their parents. Our Junior teams will be in the Christian Schools tournament the last weekend in January. Schedules will be provided to the teams when they are received.

MUSIC NOTES!Term of the Week – Dotted Note: In Western music notation, it is a note with a small dot written after it. The dot increases the duration of the note by half of its original value. A dotted note is equivalent to writing the basic note tied to a note of half the value. For example: a half note (=2 beats) tied to a quarter note (=1 beat) is held for 3 beats. In the same way a half note with a dot is also held for 3 beats. (E.g. see Hymn 1 – “he descended into hell” italics indicate the place of the half note with a dot).Kindergarten (Mrs. Nyhof) We learned “Phoney Baloney” and took turns creating movement. We’ll also learn “Barnacle Bill” and add actions to the song. Next week we’ll learn “Put the Beat in your Feet.” We’ll start with the movements in the song and later replace these with instruments.Grade 1 - This week we continued with “Starlight.” We started writing the rhythm of the song using Ta’s (quarter notes) and TiTi’s (eighth notes). We also worked on using different instruments to accompany the song. Tuesday we will continue working on writing the rhythm of the song. We will also use Solfege to write the melody. Grade 2 - We learned what a “Tie” does in music. We also learned “Bell Horses” and reviewed Ta’s and Titi’s. Monday we will start writing the rhythm and melody. Friday we will work on rhythmic and melodic ostinatos to accompany the song.Grade 3 - This week we learned what a dot does to a note. We used different visuals to show what it does. We even used chairs as beats and students as notes! Wednesday we will write music that has a tie in it. Friday we will continue with recorder and learn more songs with B-A-G notes.Grade 4 - This week we continued with “Ma Ku Ay,” a Maori stick game from New Zealand. This week we focused mainly on keeping a steady beat using different body percussion. Monday we will learn different rhythm patterns that will progressively get more difficult. Wednesday we will continue with recorder learn more songs with B-A-G notes.Grade 5 - This week we learned “In the Dark Dark Woods” and used it to review dynamics. We learned “Ghost of Tom” and will learn actions to the song and sing it in a round. Thursday we will continue with recorder and play 10 variations of a well-known melody using B-A-G notes.Grade 6 - This week we did different activities relating to keeping the beat and focusing on other players. Tuesday we will learn “Here’s a Song that’s Really Neat” and work on improvisation. Thursday we will learn a new note in recorder.Grade 7 - This week we will continue learning different patterns on the percussion instruments to accompany the song “Lullaby” and learned about chord progressions. In the week of February 1 we will to put the accompaniment to the song.Grade 8 - Next week we will review “Betty Botter” and transfer the rhythms to different percussion instruments. We will also start learning “7/8 Dance” and brush up on our recorder skills.

ELEMENTARY CLASSROOM NEWS:Kindergarten – Mrs. Nyhof We had another full week. We finally had our whole class at school on Monday but again had a student missing on Wednesday. We learned two new letter sounds again, talked about our families and titles we have (brother, sister, daughter, son, granddaughter, grandson, niece and nephew). Grade 3 students came to read to us again. This is something that is enjoyed by both grades. Being read to exposes the Kindergarten students to more language, while the grade 3 students practice their oral reading skills! Since we have only begun to talk about communities this week and haven’t gotten to the people working in our community yet, we will postpone our community helper dress up day to Wed., February 3 (remember, we will make the costumes in class for this dress up day). Here are the plans for next week:Monday: Library books and HOME READING (5 books in the bag) are due. Keep up the good work K students and parents!Wednesday: All school dress up day! See note elsewhere in the Messenger.Parent Helpers: Mon.-Crystal L., Wed. – Twylla T.Bible Stories: Mon. – The Burning Bush; Wed. – Let My People Go; Fri. - The Ten Plagues part 1Memory Work: Song: Psalm 93:1, Text: Romans 8:28 “And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.” Personal information (home address, phone number and birthday). Please be diligent in this personal memory work as we cannot rehearse it at school as a group. I’ll be checking from time to time if your child knows his/her personal information. This will be assessed for their next report card.Show and Tell: Mon: Max H., Natalie, Olivia; Wed: Peyton, Sarah, Simon; Fri.: Sophie, Taryn, VeronicaMath: grouping and #7 & #8Language Arts: Continuing with Animated Literacy-letters, sounds and songs. Grade 1: Mrs. Teitsma and Mrs. WelchThe students were quite excited to at last beat their Read to Self record this week! This means that

all of them were spread around the classroom with several books of their choice, reading quietly for 13 minutes in a row without any distractions! We were all very proud.

The students are requiring more reminders about how important it is for them to be able to sit quietly and listen, especially during mat time and Bible reading. It is very easy to be a distraction to others or to allow oneself to be distracted. They certainly have more endurance than they did at the beginning of the year, but now they are often choosing to be distracted and we know they can perform better. We will continue to work on our self-control together

You will notice that we do not have any students listed for Show and Tell on Friday. With 29 students who need to sing/recite their Memory Work, we have decided to use Friday’s Show and Tell time for that as well.

Have a blessed weekend!Show and Tell: M. Gavin, Jacob; T. Jamin, Janelle; W. Jaydyn, Kaelynn; T. Kalli, LoganMemory Work: Song: Ps 121: 1 (due Friday, January 29); Text: Joshua 1:9 (due Friday, January 29)Bible: We will be finishing up the stories in the book of Joshua this week and will do a bit of review about Joshua’s life at the end of the week. Monday: The Gibeonites (Joshua 9), Tuesday: Dividing the Land (Joshua 13-22), Wednesday: Joshua’s farewell speech and death (Joshua 23, 24).Word Wall Words: Starting Power Words list 4: an – as – brown – by -- from.Letter Work: We are going to be listening for sounds at the beginning of words and at the end of words, starting with the letter M. We will be introducing more consonants and later some vowels to increase our ability to hear sounds in the words we say. We will soon get into spelling full words, and these skills should also help us in our writing.Writing: We are learning about how to come up with ideas for our writing. This week we talked about how important our memories are when it comes to ideas. Many books are written about things that

Page 9: THE MESSENGER - immanuelchristian.ca€¦  · Web viewGrade 12 Essential Math Achievement ... song “Lullaby” and learned about chord progressions. ... and word wall words will

actually happened to the authors. We can even use some of the ideas from the timeline we will be making during theme centres to help us remember important times that might be fun to write about.Math: This past week we had a lot of fun working with the Friends of Ten. We made them with linking cubes, watched videos, sang songs, played games, and completed worksheets. This coming week we will continue to do some of these as well as fill in our Friends of Ten on Ten Frames and show them on Bead Racks. We also continue to work on our Number Work and Cross Number Puzzles.Theme Centers: Thank you for filling in your ‘homework’. We will use your answers to make a thumb print Family Tree and a Timeline. We also wrote poems about our senses and made collages to show everything we have learned.
