MWSCC CHAPTER EDUCATIONAL DINNER MEETING Mlnteraction of Compounds with the Skin-Pathways for Penetration and Industry Guidelines for Skin Absorption Studies" Nava Dayan, Ph.D., Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy at Rutgers University

Abstract The way a compound interacts with our skin depends on three main factors: the nature of the compound, the condition of the skin and the vehicle (formulation) the compound is incorporated into, In general, since healthy intact skin is lipophilic in nature, compounds with relatively low MW that are lipophilic may partition into the skin. We also know that if penetrates, a compound will most likely partition between the corneocytes via the intercellular lipids. Follicular penetration is more complicated and depends on the solubility of the compound in the sebum, the site of application on the body and the activity of the sebaceous gland.

In order to assess potential penetration into and through the skin, the industry developed guidelines for ex vivo testing using cadaver and other skin models. In my talk I will describe the possible paths for penetration into the skin, key aspects of the testing guidelines and approaches to enhance penetration with minImal insult.

Bio Dr. Dayan earned her Ph.D. in Pharmaceutics from the Hebrew University in Jerusalem specializing in skin delivery. She is currently an Associate Adjunct Professor in the Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy at Rutgers University, and the R&D Director at Lipo Chemicals Inc, During her 24 years of experience she has specialized In a variety of areas related to skin treatment. Dr. Dayan has received numerous awards of excellence for various papers she has authored. She is the author and co-author more then 100 publications including book chapters and was granted 8 patents. Dr. Dayan teaches at Rutgers University and is the Director of a variety of courses at the Center for Professional Advancement.

POSTER SESSION - ALKONT EL 3645 - A Mild, Liquid Rheology Modifier and Conditioning Agent Oxiteno has developed a new triester, that when blended with traditional PEG-esters, creates an effective and mild, liquid rheology modifier which also provides noticeable

softness and conditioning. This combination provides formulation advantages and manufacturing flexibility. It is especially useful as an alternative to gums and polymers as thickening and/or condit ioning agent. Our combination of nonionics reduces energy use by eliminating the need to heat batches and by reducing batch-cycle times, Since this thickener is added at the end of manufacturing, lower viscosities throughout the batch process reduces resistance on the mixers again reducing energy consumption. The easy incorporation of these blends facilitates balch adjustments and neutralization is not required for desired viscosities, Formulators will appreciate the blend's compatibility with polym8fs and all surfactant classes as well as the option of developing clear, salt-free formulations.

EARL Y START WINTER HOURS, SOCIAL HOUR BEGINS AT 4:30 p.m.

February put a chill in the air and kept the beer cold at the Millrose Restaurant & Brewing Company where we gathered to listen to Dr. Philip Wertz lecture on "Paracellular and Follicular Pathways in Transdermal Drug Delivery" during our educational dinner meeting. The 50 members who attended gave a round of applause to Anatoly Dameshek, our out-going Treasurer, as he received a plaque to commemorate his 3 years of service to our Chapter.

Our Educational Dinner Meetings continue on March 8th at 4:30 p.m. at Vince's Italian Restaurant & Pizzeria in Harwood Heights when Nava Dayan will discuss "Interaction of Compounds with the Skin- Pathways for Penetration and Industry Guidelines for Skin Absorption Studies", Don't forget the early start t ime. Student members and unemployed members may attend our educational dinner meetings free of charge.

The Twin Cities Chapter will be hosting the 5th Biennial Holistic Cosmetic Symposium and Suppliers Showcase on Tuesday, March 15, 2011. This event is a wonderful opportunity to support both TCCSCC and MWSCC as we would welcome articles from attendees for the SCCoop newsletter. Please don't hesitate to take the opportunity to share what you learned at this event with all our members. Don't forget that authors of selected articles that are published in SCCoop will receive a $50 reimbursement and be eligible to win a prestig ious award for the best article published during the calendar year. Sharpen your pencils, take notes and tell us what you learned.

I would like to encourage everyone to attend the educational dinner meetings and additional events. Please mark your calendars with the "Save the Dates" for 2011 that are listed on page 1. If you would like a reminder magnet with the dates on it, please pick one up at the reg istration table at our March meeting. Our Board members are working on the details for various events. Please do not hesitate to contact them if you would like to volunteer for one of the committees.

I wou ld like to take this opportunity to welcome our new Board members: Peggy Dorrance Bennett (Program), Katie Schaefer (Publicity) and Brad Pentzien (Membership). Also, I would like to welcome our 8 new Chapter members. Please take a moment to introduce yourself to them at one of our events and invite them to sit at your table.

Getting to Know Our New MW see Treasurer Michael Frushour SCCoop was able to catch our new Chapter Treasurer Michael Frushour and ask him for an interview. He was more than happy to oblige. Be sure to congratulate him!

How long have you been involved with the SeC? I've been an active member of the sec since 1995, when I moved to Chicago from New Jersey.

What companies have you previously worked for? Nalco Chemical, Unilever Research in Edgewater, NJ and Stepan Company.

Who is your current employer? I'm a Senior Scientist at Alberto-Culver

What is your Academic record? I have a Bachelor's degree in Chemistry from Purdue University. Go Boilers!!

Why do you think sec membership is important? The sec gives people in our area a tremendous opportunity to connect with their colleagues. Not only are the educational aspects important. but so are the opportunities for friendship and socialization. I also think it's a great way to bring new people into our industry and help tnem explore the exciting field of cosmetic chemistry. Since taking over as Treasurer, I've really been impressed by the many dedicated people we have who put in so much effort to make our chapter such a success.

Additional professional memberships: I'm a member of Alpha Chi Sigma (Beta Nu Chapter) and a former member of the American Chemical Society (ACS).

What is your favorite see moment (function, event, talk or other)? I really do enjoy every chapter meeting. It's always great to connect with friends and learn something new. Teamworks, Social Night and the Annual Meetings are fun too!

Where have you lived? I grew up in Indiana and have spent time in Texas and New Jersey, before moving to Chicagoiand.

Tell us about your hobbies or leisure activities: I like tinkering with mechanical things and do as much automotive work as I can, so I spend plenty of time at Sears, Lowes or Autolone! Other than that, J enjoy skiing, football (Bears right?) and spending time with my family. Recently, I've taken an interest in mid-20th century literature and the occasional Stephen King novel.

What is your favorite restaurant? Wildfire, Texas Roadhouse and Chili's {not necessarily in that orde~.

What is your favorite board game? I used to like playing Trivial Pursuit, but these days, it's Dr. Seuss matching games with my awesome 41h year-old son!
