The American Dream
On a late summer day in September 1654, a small French frigate named the Ste. Catherine, sailed into the port of New Amsterdam. Most of the ship’s passengers - “twenty-three souls, big and little” - were Jewish refugees from Recife, Brazil, who had been expelled by the Portuguese. They were seeking a new home in a city of extraordinary religious diversity.
While they were not the first Jews in America, they became the foundation for what would become one of the largest, most prosperous, and most diverse Jewish communities in history. The story of Jewish America and American Jews is the ultimate story of the American dream.
The wall built by our founding fathers between religion and state created fertile ground for the flowering of Jewish religious and cultural expression. New
understandings of what it means to be Jewish have blossomed here in nearly every variety: Reform, Conservative, Modern Orthodoxy, Reconstructionist, Chabad, Renewal and more each day.
Despite our experience of prejudice and anti-Semitism, there has never been in the history of the world a home more welcoming to
the Jewish people or one in which we have better integrated into the larger fabric of American civil life.
The 2010 Census estimates that there are 6.5 million Jews in the United States today, just over two percent of the total population. And yet today there are twenty-two Jewish members of the House of Representatives, eleven Jewish members of the Senate and three Jewish members of the Supreme Court. Jews have excelled in nearly every avenue of the arts, in the sciences, in business, and even a few in professional sports.
This year, the celebration of Chanukah begins on Thanksgiving Day. Thanksgiving is a time when we are asked to consider with gratitude the blessings of our lives, as did the early settlers in Massachusetts. It has become a celebration of the gift of the American Dream, a dream of living
in a land where we are free to express our religious conscience precisely as we choose, with no compulsion or interference from the state.
The Maccabees in ancient times were also fighting for religious liberation, so that the land of Israel might be restored to her people for freedom to lead a Jewish life. The celebration of Chanukah harkens us back to the restoration and dedication of the Temple which had been wrested from us by King Antiochus.
As we celebrate both of these festivals of freedom, we remember that “Chanukah” means “dedication”. We should use this time to think of what it is in our Jewish American story that we have chosen to honor with our life choices. Have we used the freedom of America to pursue a Jewish life unfettered by external pressures and forces, or used that freedom to walk away from the covenant and our Jewish heritage? Have we honored the sacrifice of so many who fought to defend American ideals so that we can enjoy the privilege of the freedoms that make America great? Have we done enough to spread the promise of American opportunity and freedom to those who are vulnerable here: those stuck in the cycle of poverty, those who are newly emigrated, those who suffer from disability or prejudice?
This year, as we celebrate Chanukah and Thanksgiving, we think of the immortal words of John F. Kennedy: “Ask not what your country (and your people) can do for you; ask what you can do for your country.” Let us give thanks for the American dream, and let us see that it is spread to all who call America home.
BY RABBI DAN LEVIN
This year, the celebration of Chanukah begins on Thanksgiving Day. As we celebrate both of these festivals of freedom, we think of what it is in our Jewish American story

Many people in America take for granted that Jews may now choose the way they practice their Judaism. During the Holocaust,
European Jews were persecuted for being Jews and could not practice their beloved religion. They were proud to be Jews and lost their lives and families’ lives because of this.
Reform and Progressive Jews in Israel have been living as second class Jews in the eyes of the State even before the State of Israel was established in 1948. Only
recently have women been able to choose their seat when riding a bus in certain neighborhoods. If a Jewish couple does not want to be married by an Ultra-Orthodox Rabbi and live according to the Ultra-Orthodox or Haradi laws, they must leave the country to be married in a Reform ceremony. The State of Israel does not recognize their marriage.
In the United States Jews have the luxury of choosing when, where and how they want to observe their religion. Our clergy, staff, and religious educators are there for each and every one of us. The community we have established here at Temple Beth El needs our people to come together
to worship, to help others less fortunate than we are, to educate our children and grandchildren and the generations to come. Who are we to stop the lineage of customs and observances that our parents and grandparents passed down to our generation? But it is up to each and every one of us to spread the word to our friends and their friends how important it is to be part of our Jewish community to learn, to help others, and to worship together. We cannot stand by and watch other Jews live without the warmth, the support, and the feeling of having a community to surround them when they are celebrating simchas or experiencing difficult times.

Every year dozens of individuals and families resign from Temple Beth El. The reason most people give when asked why they discontinued their membership
is that they do not feel connected to the Temple. Fortunately we have a steady pipeline of new families and individuals who take their place, and as a result our membership numbers have remained fairly steady in recent years and our synagogue is financially secure.
But we don’t want our members to feel disconnected. That is not what Temple Beth El is about. We must strive to engage, involve and connect every member of Temple Beth El so they choose to remain part of our Temple Beth El family.
Our Clergy, Staff and Membership
Committee work hard to keep our congregants engaged and connected to the Temple. But with nearly 1,400 member families, we cannot do it alone. I am therefore hoping that you will consider joining the Membership Committee.
The Membership Committee is made up of volunteers willing to spend a few hours a month engaging and connecting with our TBE family members. We may need help making a few phone calls, attending a Temple event or reaching out to new families who recently joined the Temple.
It’s a terrific way for you to give back to TBE, make a real difference in the future of our congregation and maybe… feel more connected yourself. If you are able to assist the Membership Committee, please contact Rachael Rand, Congregational Engagement Coordinator, at 561/391-8900 or [email protected].

Joseph MAYERCHAK Germanygrowing up as a Jew in post-World War II germany afforded me a unique childhood. My parents, Holocaust survivors, were protective in very subtle ways. I along with one other Jewish boy did attend a neighborhood public school. Ben and I were basically loners and singled out to go to a “study hall” while the rest of the students were assigned to a religious class daily. Close friendships with the other students in my class was not encouraged by my parents. They did, however, provide opportunities for
me to meet Jewish children of my age at the Jewish Community Center, the temple, and on family vacations. Finally, knowing that my chances of meeting a Jewish girl would be limited in germany, my parents chose to move to New York, learn a new language, and begin anew. For their courage and determination I am forever grateful.
sophie AMICHAI France“Why do you live here? You come from such a beautiful place?” I am often asked.
“I love the freedom here; life is altogether easier,” I answer, “and the Florida sun reminds me of the Mediterranean lifestyle I grew up with in Cannes.”
But, when I go back to France I do not wear my Magen David. Again, it is not safe there and in most of Europe to show that you are Jewish, even if the reasons have changed. In South Florida I can be and feel Jewish with everything I do: I see people wearing a chai or a Jewish star around their neck, I find gefillte fish and Shabbat candles at the grocery stores, I drive behind trucks advertising kosher catering or a company name like Shalom. Here, your Jewishness is not something you have to hide or keep private: it is alive around you. Here, I enjoy the freedom to be Jewish and to share it. That freedom, still today, is rare and cannot be taken for granted by any of us anywhere in the world. This is why I live here: it is our con-tribution to teach our children in freedom and joy the beauty of our faith and traditions and to keep the Jewish people alive for all the gen-erations to come.
rochWerger FAMILY ArgentinaAs our grandparents moved to Argentina from Eastern Europe before the War to give their children a better future, we made the move to the US in 1999 so that we could do the same. Like them, we had dreams, goals, hopes, worries and anxiety. Being Jewish in Argentina is different in many ways. It is not forbidden to practice your religion, however it is mostly practiced indoors, meaning, you can do it openly but really can’t. Some of our most vivid memories from our teenage years, such as going to dance parties at the JCCs are followed by memories of worry that gangs could have been waiting for us just because we were Jewish, or that tombstones in the Jewish cemetery would be profaned. We were looking for a change and certainly got it. Not only did our community embrace us with love, compassion and enthusiasm, but we love being able to say in any place we want that we are Jewish, and practice it wherever we want. For us, being Jewish in America means freedom!
onlY in AMERICAchanukah and thanksgiving fall at the same time this year, and won’t again for 79,000 years. this rare occurrence inspired us to reflect upon how being Jewish in america is like being Jewish nowhere else in the world. at temple beth el, there are several members of our congregation who have emigrated from other countries and know just how special it is to be Jewish in america. here, a few of them tell their stories of religious freedom and gratitude. happy thanksgiving!

bronia LOPATUKHIN RussiaMy name is Bronia Lopatukhin. I grew up in Leningrad, Russia. Being a Jew in Russia is very different from being a Jew in America. In Russia, Jewish was a nationality, not a religion. Every Soviet citizen had a passport and the fifth page was stamped with his or her nationality. Mine had a large ”JEW” stamped into it. In Soviet Russia, we couldn’t go to temple or celebrate holidays at home. When I think of Yom Kippur now, I think of Temple Beth El, candles, fasting, and then getting together with family and friends for Break Fast. When I think of Yom Kippur in Russia, I think of my grandma turning on the light bulb in her pantry and shutting the door for 24 hours, so the neighbors couldn’t see it. When I think of Chanukah now, I think of latkes, celebration and my kids opening their presents. When I think of Chanukah in Russia, I think of my other grandma giving me a few kopecks and calling them”gelt”. When I think about Passover now, I think of matzah and Seders with friends and family. When I think of Passover in Russia, nothing comes to mind.
I came to this country in 1992, and had a Jewish wedding with a Chup-pah in New York. My kids started their Jewish education at Temple Beth El with Mommy and Me classes and then continued with preschool. My son, Elliot, had his Bar Mitzvah here and now he is getting ready for Confirmation. My daughter, Ricca, is getting ready for her Bat Mitzvah in August.
Elliot was the first boy in three generations of our family to get Bar Mitzvah and Ricca will be the first girl in our family to ever to become a Bat Mitzvah. I’m thrilled that be-ing Jewish for my family doesn’t mean a stamp in the passport, it means religion, education and cel-ebrations with friends and family.

Chanukah begins on
Wednesdayevening
november 27, 2013.
To help you celebrate, here are the Chanukah
Candle Blessings.
While holding a lighted shamas (service candle),
the following two blessings are recited:
In Celebration Of ChanukahWe give thanks for the redeeming wonders and the mighty deeds by which at this season our peoplewere saved in days of old.
In the days of the Hasmoneans, a tyrant arose against our ancestors, determined to make themforget Your Torah, and to turn them away from obedience to Your will. But in great love You wereat their side in time of trouble. You gave them strength to struggle and to triumph, that they mightserve You in freedom.
Through the power of Your spirit the weak defeated the strong, the few prevailed over the many, and the righteous were triumphant. Then Your children returned to Your house, to purify thesanctuary and kindle its lights. And they dedicated these days to give thanks and praise to Yourgreat name.

The bar and bat mitzvah experience is different in America than it is elsewhere in the world. At Temple Beth El our children spend years in preparation and lead the entire service with confidence. Afterwards, they enjoy wonderful celebrations in honor of their special day that is the culmination of their hard work and time. This has led many Jewish families in America to feel that this rite of passage is also a kind of graduation from Jewish study and Jewish life.
A recent and popular New York Times article entitled, “Bar Mitzvahs Get New Look to Build Faith” looks at an initiative of the Union for Reform Judaism that is trying to bring spirituality and a sense of the sacred back into the bar and bat mitzvah process. It is trying to help American Jews view this rite of passage as a way into and not a way out of Judaism.
At Temple Beth El we often talk about our bar and bat mitzvah program as one of the crown jewels of our synagogue. Our
students craft and lead their celebration like few other places in the country. Our students spend four to five sessions at the beginning of their individual instruction with the rabbi in order to understand their Torah and Haftarah portions. Thus, when they learn to chant their portion they have a basic understanding of the message. They also create a Mitzvah Project which they feel “passionate” about, and that will make a difference in the world. A third unique feature of our program is that parents are encouraged to sit in on all sessions with tutors, clergy and educators. In this way parents show their support for their child and can truly be a partner in the process. These are just three examples of how we try to bring sacredness into our bar/bat mitzvah program.
Our 7th grade program works hard to make those students feel like they are a part of a community. Our curriculum focuses on relationships, with the goal that students conclude their bar or bat mitzvah year feeling that they are an integral part of Temple Beth El and the larger Jewish community. Our message is clear: Bar/Bat Mitzvah is just the beginning of a child’s Jewish education and a life filled with Jewish learning and living.

MITZVAH proJect haleY MORDISWhen I chose my mitzvah project, it was easy to partner with the Youth Activity Center of Veterans Park located in Boca Raton. My mitzvah project involved sports, because I love to play basketball. This is what I want for other young children. To have an opportunity to throw a baseball, make a basket, hit a tennis ball, throw a football, etc. Some children and families do not have the basic sporting items to even go outside and play catch. I asked friends and family to donate ANY sports related equipment, gently used clothing or shoes to the Youth Activity Center of Veterans Park. And, I knew my project should combine a local charitable organization with children. Choosing the Youth Activity Center was perfect.

START-UP NATION addresses the trillion dollar question: How is it that Israel – a country of 7.1 million, only 60 years old, surrounded by enemies, in a constant state of war since its founding, with no natural resources—produces more start-up companies than large, peaceful, and stable nations like Japan, China, India, Korea, Canada, and the UK? How is it that Israel has, per person, attracted over twice as much venture capital investment as the US and thirty times more than Europe?

SISTERhOOD UPDATE
trish schaum, sisterhood [email protected]
As I sat in the Sisterhood meeting, I looked around the table. The multiple generations of women who sat there came from very different backgrounds. We were asked to give a small blurb about ourselves. People spoke about where they came from and what they had done, one had grown-up at Temple Beth El and had participated in confirmation at the temple as a child, one had worked for ADL, Israel Bonds, and Federation. One had sat on so many boards of so many Jewish organizations it was too many to count. The New Year had brought together these women who are leaders at our temple to discuss the programs for the future. The participation in the Women of the Wall celebration, our own healing Shabbat, our involvement in the National WRJ 100 year celebration,
and study sessions on the Women’s commentary with Rabbi Brockman were just a few things discussed. How amazing it was to realize that only in America, Jewish women from all generations have the opportunity to be leaders, work in Jewish organizations, pray together and learn Torah with fellow Jewish women. Also, I realized how blessed we were to have these women in our congregation to share with and help us build a new group of future Jewish women leaders at Temple Beth El. So when I sit down for Thanksgiving and enjoy my latke for Chanukah, I will truly know the miracle of being Jewish in America.
A special THANK YOU goes out to Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Rockoff to their generous donation towards the Sisterhood. We truly appreciate their gift.

One of the many benefits of our Beth El community is the opportunity to interact with others who share our values and principles. Coming together as Jews helps us appreciate our good fortune to live, work and worship in the United States with the ability to enjoy a sense of peace, safety and freedom
our people have rarely known. As a validation of our outreach to our synagogue community, our Brotherhood was recognized in June with the Allen Gardner Award for Youth, Teen or College Program, for our BFF/Bonding with Fathers for Fun program that connects dads and kids by age group in fun activities and trips. We were selected to receive this award from programs across the country by the national organization, Men of Reform Judaism. May you and your family celebrate this Chanukah and Thanksgiving holiday in peace and in good health.
