September 28th Is World Rabies DayAccording to the CDC around 70,000 people die from rabies annually, with over 99% of these deaths in Africa and Asia, as a result of being bitten by an infected dog.

Up to 60% of all dog bites and rabies deaths occur inchildren under the age of 15.

Rabies is 99.9% fatal, but is 100% preventable. Eliminating the disease by vaccinating your pet protects them and stops transmission to people.

On the track at the Olympic games in just un-der a year, a local resident could stand before the massive crowd in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, a long way from the trails of Tomslake she grew up training on.

She would probably give a cautious wave, not nervous about racing though, because that’s just never been her style.

The 24-year-old is living on borrowed time in the track and field racing world, a relative un-known a year ago and extremely new to track and field, having only raced in a handful of top com-petitions and now potentially competing in two Olympic races.

Fiona Benson is that girl, who grew up just out-side of Dawson Creek and doesn’t yet know what the next 11 months will hold for her.

Benson Bears Down On Olympicsslowing down or finding a decline.

After Benson took the Canadian track world by storm in qualifying for the 2015 Beijing IAAF Track and Field Champion-ships in the 800 metre, she continued her rise with a personal best 1:59.59 that gave her another time under the prestigious two–minute mark this year.

On the Canadian side only Benson and world champion silver medalist Melissa Bishop have cracked that mark this year and are two of the five Canadian women in history to break the mark.

“My main emotion coming out of Worlds was excitement for when I race more, race better, and run faster,” Benson said about her race in the semi’s when she finished fifth, but with a personal best.

“It was certainly not one of my stron-gest races; at the same time I'm so grate-ful for this season and the chances I have

now to really earn my stripes and become a skilled runner, instead of crossing my fingers and hoping things go my way.”

Benson followed that up with an Olym-pic standard qualifying race in the 1,500m to close out her season in Italy.

“I'm pretty confident that one day I could be better at the 1,500 than the 800. Last week, though, I wasn't going to call it,” she said of her 4:05 time that ranks number one among Canadian women in the distance in 2015 by more than a sec-ond.

“I went to Europe for the extra travel-ling and racing experience, and if the season's fitness translated into a 1,500m standard that was a huge bonus, and a real head start on next year's goals.”

Benson added the most valuable les-son she learned between Beijing and Italy was really putting together what it takes to

be a professional runner. “Running can be lonely,” she said. “The best part of Beijing was probably

meeting a bunch of people who all share the lifestyle; it makes the idea of 'running pro' more normal and do-able. When I went to Europe to race after I actually saw people I recognized, and that was great.”

As for her goals in 2016, with two Olympic qualifying times, it means she can spend the year focusing on whichever discipline she wants, with the assurance that she can likely go to the Olympics in the event she chooses. It’s still too early to tell.

“The 1,500m has been my favourite

distance since the first time I raced it, and I think it will be my ultimate focus,” she said.

“This year just worked out better to chase the 800m, and I think it worked re-ally well with my experience level and fit-ness base, but we've got a year to decide which will be my stronger event in 2016. Luckily they complement each other well; I think I can work on speed with the 800 and strength with the 1,500 during the regular track season, and make the final decision closer to the Olympics.”

Councillor not happy with $50K grant to golf club

A Dawson Creek city councillor is questioning whether city leaders acted fairly in awarding a $50,000 grant for parking lot upgrades to the local golf club.

Coun. Mark Rogers has called for a review of the city’s decision-making processes after council awarded the grant at its Aug. 17 meeting.

Coun. Shaely Wilbur brought forward the re-quest from the 400-mem-ber golf club, which is look-ing to repair its parking lot over two years. She said improving the golf course could help keep doctors and other professionals in the community.

“The mayor and I did meet with a couple represen-tatives (of the golf course) and did get some feedback from local doctors, that as part of that retention of doctors, they really use the golf course…” she said.

“We are looking at doctor retention and quality of life in the community and I think that’s part of it … I think we should support (the club) and we have the funds to do so.”

Wilbur added that a number of grants from other levels of government had freed up city money for the project.

Less than nine minutes elapsed be-tween the introduction of the motion and the final vote, a move which re-quired waiving the city’s grant policy. The decision was made at the start of the meeting, when councillors can in-troduce motions not already on the agenda with the support of a majority of councillors.

Coun. Charlie Parslow, who vot-ed with Rogers against the motion, worried how the move would ap-pear to other groups vying for public money.“People sometimes ask me is there a grant?” Parslow said. “I refer them to the policy, I explain it. Then when this happened, people ask ‘Well,

I thought you told us this is the proce-dure — what gives?’

“It confuses the public and it leads people to doubt if what I say is true,” he said.

Applications for grant money are typically vetted by city staff, Parslow said, a process which includes a review of the group’s eligibility, financial posi-tion, and attempts to find additional

sources of funding. Rogers said he was “not

comfortable at all” with the vote. At Monday’s meeting he moved for city staff to consider modifying the rules to require written notice beforehand. Chief Administrative Officer Jim Chute said staff would also consider building in “con-templative time.”

“As a minimum, (a deci-sion) would be deferred until later in the meeting to give

(councillors) time to chew on it,” he said.

Rogers said his issue was “with not being able to have the information. How can you make a proper decision without the right information? The mayor and (Coun.) Wilbur knew what was going to be happening weeks ahead of time.”

Council has turned down other re-quests for funding due to fiscal con-cerns in recent years, notably to Step Up N Ride, a non-profit that operates an on-call bus service for seniors and disabled people. However, the group had requested an increase in its annual operating fee of $25,500, instead of a one-time capital project like at the golf course. Parslow gave the Mile 0 Park Society as an example of a group that has also sought money for a capital project.

“There’s a process, because this is public money,” he said. “We need to be very diligent, and not seen to be (greas-ing) the squeaky wheel. We need to be open and engaging, and go through a process.”

Local NewsTickets sales take off for U-17

After early bird ticket packages for the World Under-17 Challenge sold out over the weekend, packages are already 80 per cent sold out

Throughout many events in the Peace Region, the prevailing thought from most organizers is always “these are last-minute towns”.

The World Under-17 Challenge has shattered that myth, although a decid-edly more high-calibre sporting event than most that have come to the region since the 2012, it has exceeded expec-tations selling out all early bird pack-ages before the weekend was over.

If that was impressive, consider that still six weeks away from puck drop, tickets are flying out of the box office almost as fast as they are printing.

“As a committee we are extremely happy with the response, specifically to the early bird packages that sold out last weekend and our projected num-bers about how we need to finance the overall event for making it a success,” Co-Chair of the event for Dawson

Creek Barry Reynard said on Wednes-day.

“They are exceeding our expecta-tions today, with six weeks away from Team Canada arriving we have sold over 80 per cent of our projected pack-ages that we allocated in our budget.”

It’s a nice problem for the commit-tee to have, one that largely comes from projections they put forward to both Fort St. John and Dawson Creek City Councils brought forward the idea of hosting the event.

“We had to set some ticket projec-tions and when we brought this to our councils, they wanted to ensure that we had some very good data on that and we used information from the Al-lan Cup and the world U-18 and we felt very realistic with the numbers and how we were going to project our out-comes and I have to say so far to date we have done very well with that,” Rey-nard added.

Currently the organizing commit-

tee is working towards establishing a better idea of how many corporate packages, scout packages and national sponsor packages from Hockey Cana-da will need to be set aside before mak-ing single game tickets available.

Despite those numbers not quite being finalized, packages in Fort St. John have been clearly in extreme de-mand.

“If you really look, we are starting to move in on close to 400 packages in Fort St. John and we will be very happy moving forward when we open up the individual tickets that we could possi-bly have those sellouts as we anticipate in Fort St. John quite early…,” Reynard said.

“I think most of the people in Fort St. John would have realized from the Allan Cup experience that we were going to have a very good push there. We’re extremely happy the way that ended up.”

Fans have yet to see what sort of

roster construction will make up Team Canada Red, White and Black for the tournament, but with 100-150 NHL scout packages that Reynard thinks will be sold for the event, future top line NHLers will surely be in the mix.

“I think our next push and an-nouncement around ticketing will be once we get that excitement of that next Connor McDavid, we’ll start to see releases around some of the best players coming and where some of the scouting reports are putting them,” he said.

“Once the Canadian teams are named you will go very quickly and see these are all first round draft picks of the majority of Western Hockey League, Ontario Hockey League and the Quebec Major teams. Really what you are looking at will be franchise players and rookies of the year.”

Disc golf is growing in popularity in Dawson Creek and that is attract-ing some unwanted attention.

For the second time in the span

of a week, members of the Dawson Creek Disc Golf Club are scratching their heads after discovering a catch basket had been ripped out of the ground and carried off. Last Friday, someone vandalized and bent an-other basket, less than 24 hours after

it was installed.“I noticed it missing around 6:30

a.m.,” club president Daniel Martin wrote in a post on the group's Face-book page Saturday morning.

Martin had just gotten off work-ing a night shift and was removing the old "tonal" targets on the holes in preparation for the club’s season

ending tournament this year. The course is located just off 15th

Street in Barbaree Park.Tire tracks could be seen next to

the stolen basket, one club member reported.

Martin has contacted police, who were not available for comment on Saturday. Continued on Page 7

Anemia is caused by a de ciency of red blood cells or haemoglobin in the blood. Red blood cells are responsible for carrying oxygen to the body’s cells and are therefore essential for survival. As for haemoglobin, it is a protein that is found in red blood cells that carries oxygen.

CausesAnemia is often the result of

an underlying problem.Haemorrhage: Signi cant blood

loss may lead to anemia.• Many women suff er from anemia as

a result of heavy menstrual periods.• Gastrointestinal bleeding due to ulcerative

colitis, diverticulosis, colon cancer or taking certain medications may also cause anemia.

• Haemophilia and haemorrhoids are other examples of problems that could lead to haemorrhages.

De cient Red Blood Cell Production:• Anemia may be caused by an iron

de ciency. In fact, iron de ciency is one of the leading causes of anemia. This type of anemia is known as iron defi ciency anemia or hypoferric anemia. The body needs iron to make red blood cells. When the body does not receive enough iron, it can no longer produce su cient red blood cells.

• Vitamin B12 is another nutrient that is crucial in the production of red blood cells. A vitamin B12 defi ciency leads to megaloblastic anemia which is often related to a folic acid de ciency.

• Bone marrow is responsible for red blood cell production. When the bone marrow does not produce to full capacity or if it has been partially destroyed (by a cancer treatment, for example), it no longer produces enough red blood cells. This is known as aplastic anemia.

AnemiaSrinivas

ChalagallaB.Pharm., PhD

• Serious kidney problems can also lead to anemia. In fact, the kidneys release a hormone by the name of erythropoietin that stimulates the bone marrow to make red blood cells when necessary. If the kidneys are not functioning properly, this hormone is no longer released, ceasing the production of red blood cells.

SymptomsGenerally speaking, the symptoms are the

same regardless of the underlying cause or type of anemia:

• Shortness of breath • Weakness• Dizziness • Headache• Fatigue • PallorDiagnosisAnemia is a condition that requires a

medical diagnosis. A full blood count is ordered to establish whether a person is anemic. These blood tests will look at the number, size and shape of the red blood cells. Other blood components are also analysed in an eff ort to provide the physician with a clearer idea of what may be causing the anemia.

TreatmentTreatment varies and is based on the type

of anemia. Iron supplements may be useful, particularly for those with iron defi ciency anemia. In cases where there are vitamin 812 or folic acid defi ciencies (megaloblastic anemia), supplements may also prove helpful. Improving one’s diet by increasing one’s intake of foods that are high in iron, folic acid and vitamin 812 may also be an option.

Local NewsDawson Creek plays host to

Western Canadian Rotary clubs

Rotarians from the Battlefords in Saskatch-ewan to Yellowknife will converge on Dawson Creek from Oct. 1 to 4 to mark the District 5370 annual conference.

Each year, the group selects a new district governor whose town will host the annual event.

In July, Tim Schilds of Dawson Creek be-came the fourth district governor from the Mile Zero City.

“That’s a very rare thing,” conference orga-nizing committee co-chair Dale Campbell said.

Three keynote speakers, including Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield, journalist and humani-tarian Sally Armstrong and motivational speaker Alvin Law, are scheduled to speak.

“Those are the (main) speakers, but we actu-ally have nineteen different people that are go-ing to be up on stage speaking throughout the conference” talking about different programs happening at Rotary, and about what Rotary is doing internationally and within the district, Campbell said.

Throughout the conference, attendees will also be filling food packages for the Stop Hun-ger Now initiative.

“There is going to be a presentation by (Stop Hunger Now) and delegates will have the op-portunity to work on the assembly line, filling up these meal packages,” Campbell said.

The packages will be sent to areas of need throughout the world. Delegates will receive no-tification when they have been delivered, notify-ing them where the food went.

Campbell says the hope is to fill 250,000 packages using dry goods that Stop Hunger Now will ship to Dawson Creek specifically for the conference.

Hadfield is considered the main attraction, which led the Rotary club to decide to open up his presentation at the Encana Events Centre to the public.

“We really want the public to attend parts of this conference,” Campbell said.

Hadfield will also make an appearance at Unchaga Hall to speak to students ahead of his October 2 evening appearance.

As Dawson Creek Secondary School runners hit the trails for the season, their coach hopes to follow up on the team’s unexpected success last year.

At the provincial meet in Vancouver last sea-son, the junior girls team from Dawson Creek placed tenth overall.

“I didn’t know how they’d placed, then I saw they’d placed tenth overall as part of the juniors,” said Coach Eric Wolf at the team’s practice in Kin Park Thursday afternoon. “I think they surprised themselves.

“I’m really excited this year— they’re older, they’re smarter and we’ve got new additions to the team. We’re going to sit down on Monday and set a goal for where we think we can get to. I think we can get to tenth again as a team.”

The finish was doubly surprising, as the teacher’s strike last year cut the season short.

The team shows promise in other areas, Wolf said. Last year, two boys travelled to provin-cials—too few to compete at the team level. This year, enough boys have joined to fill out a team. The Dawson Creek team won provincials in 2004, Wolf said, their best finish in recent memory.

The boy’s team this year includes Tyler McElderry and Adam Wangler, both grade 10s.

“There’s a way bigger team and it seems like a better team,” McElderry said. “We’re running faster. There are lots of athletic people in our schools and usually their friends are on the team already and say ‘you should come.’”

The two trained for this season and competed in the Emperor’s Challenge in Tumbler Ridge.

The team practices with kids from grade two to twelve and includes members from Notre Dame School, Tremblay elementary and home schools. The teams typically run between two and ten kilometres for races.

members of the girls side. Meszaros said she was roped into joining the team by a friend two years ago.

“She told me I had to come too, and it was great,” she said, adding she went to provincials last year. “It wasn’t too scary, you just run as fast as you can.”

Upcoming races include the Wolves Cross Country series, a number of meets around the Peace Region. That series includes the Bezan-son Bog race in Alberta on Sept. 26, as well as the Dawson Creek Sneak, an 11 a.m. race at the Bear Mountain cross country skiing trails Oct. 3.
