ANSWERS TO MR. AHMED ON A PAPER

WEEK 5

I was born in New South Wales, in 1968. My parents were English, with my father a Cambridge educated accountant. I attended Knox Grammar School as a child. In 2019 I was awarded a Companion of the Order of Australia, by Queen Elizabeth the 2nd. I was once famously know as a character called “Drover”. – Who am I and what am I famous for?

The winners will be drawn from the box each week and will be in the newsletter. As a prize, each winner will be given Golden Ticket from Mr. Tony. Each correct answer will receive merits.

Only one answer per student will be accepted. It must be in the form of a ‘special answer sheet – such as a poster’. The poster

must be the individual work of each student. No duplicate copies from siblings will be permitted.

Messages from Former Colleagues

Dr. Rania Al Hawry

After an incredible ten years at NIS, I could not have wished for a school with better educational facilities and discipline for my children. I am immensely grateful for the school's administration and staff, your efforts are greatly appreciated. Moreover, being part of the NIS family for few years has been an honorary unforgettable experience.

Mrs. Huda Al Shayeb

I’m glad to share you my experience as a parent, teacher and coordinator at NIS.As a mother of two sons who received their education at NIS, I am proud to say that they both got the talent, motivation and great learning methods which has turned them to thinkers who like to investigate and search more about each topic given in class. Being a teacher and coordinator at NIS was one of the best work experiences I have gained through my career path.

Building curriculums based on cooperative learning and inquiry and designing lessons regarding to students’ needs and level of learning has helped our students to develop their learning skills smoothly by providing them the conditions and suitable environment to achieve a high level of learning and life skills. Choosing NIS to be the learning destination for your children insures a great future for them by building their skills and shaping their minds.

Dr. Uzma Zafar

I taught Biology and HRF at NIS from 2009 to 2014. Three of my children also graduated from Nada, two are studying Medicine at the Charles University in Prague and one is doing a degree in Criminology at UFV in Canada. It is self-evident from my children's academic career and performance that the time in Nada was well spent and prepared them for university education appropriately. As for myself I finished the PGCE from Sunderland University while working at

Nada, which has added value to my teaching credentials and helped advance my career.

Mrs. Shaheena Shibu The NIS teaching experience allowed me to put everything that I’ve learned about education and my subject matter into action. Being a teacher or a professional, the best platform I ever experienced was Nada International School as I started my carrier as a secondary math teacher in 2009 and so proud to be part of it for a total of nine years. In departments, we spent a lot of time for preparing, researching and exploring active learning resources to deliver successful lessons. The professional

development support provided by the school team also helped me to improve the quality of teaching and learning. I am currently working as an Advanced Level Secondary Mathematics Teacher in Ministry of Education in U.A.E and I believe that it is not possible without NIS and my colleagues’ team work.

Mrs. Dhanya Lenin

The work culture in NIS makes the faculty an up to date and enthusiastic educationist well versed with the latest developments in their field, which transmits to the student community making learning productive, fun and focused. This scenario gives the student community a chance to evolve to be an independent and confident individual with a global outlook and a definite plan for their future. This makes NIS the premier choice of potential parents.

THE NIS STUDENT CODE OF CONDUCT

“In schools with good standards of behaviour, there is a balance between the use of rewards and sanctions,” (Steer, 2005, p.18)

The School seeks to create an environment in which teaching and learning can take place. The principles underlying this Student Behaviour Policy are based on respect.

Respect for self

Respect for others

Respect for the environment

STUDENTS SHOULD:

Behave in a sensible and appropriate manner

Be in the correct place at the correct time

Do their best with all school work

STUDENTS SHOULD:

Allow others to learn and teachers to teach

Treat everybody with consideration, respect and good manners

Respect the right of others to hold their beliefs and opinions

Keep to the school dress code

Help to prevent all forms of bullying

Behave with the health and safety of others in mind

Behave honestly, helpfully and responsibly

STUDENTS SHOULD:

Treat their own property and the property of others with care

Treat the school buildings, contents and grounds with care

Steer, A (2005), “Learning behaviour: The Report of The Practitioners’ Group on School Behaviour and Discipline”. DfEE

Students who fail to adhere to the above will be punished in accordance with school policy

Messages from Former Colleagues Mrs. Nada Khateeb

Working at NIS was by far the best experience of my life not just for me professionally but also for my whole family. It is very rare to find a place where children love and enjoy their school experience even though it is lots of hard work as the school has high expectations form its students, yet there is always that rare sense of family and home while at school. I and my husband had the privilege to work and acquire a great professional experience at NIS that landed us reputable jobs when we went back to

our home country. Thank you for everyone at NIS for making our 9 years an amazing memory.

Mrs. Fiona Cara

I was a former employee and parent of students who went to NIS. My first two children started at NIS 2002. Subsequently, I had 4 more children and they all went to NIS. Over the years I have seen Nada School evolve from being a community-based school to an International School with exceptional standards.

I relocated back to my home country at the end of 2018 after residing in the Kingdom for 16 years. I was not surprised to see that all my children were

ahead of their peers. They performed exceptionally well, and I thank NIS for all that they did for my children academically and socially. They have a solid foundation and I have no doubt that they will achieve success wherever they go. They miss their school, their teachers and friends so much and are always comparing their current school to NIS and will not hesitate to go back. As a former colleague all I can say is that I miss the school dearly and I especially miss my students and teaching there. The school management always strove for excellence and spent a lot of time and effort developing their teachers, providing us with the best available professional development and technology for us to deliver excellence to our students. The passion that I now have for teaching was inspired and nurtured by NIS and I thank you would recommend the school to any parent relocating to the Eastern Region.

Mrs. Stephanie Alvarez

Academic expectations are set at a very high standard at NIS. The high standard filters throughout the school resulting in well-planned productive lessons as well as highly motivated and dedicated children. The ethos of NIS made me strive to continuously improve and develop my teaching approach and practices. The professional growth I gained through the varied opportunities awarded me at NIS, will forever be priceless.

Mr. Mohammad Khattab

I had a unique experience working at NIS. I started as an English language and social studies teacher but evolved into a PE teacher and Events Coordinator. This transition changed my experience and focused on my strengths in communication skills and organizational skills. I have worked so hard and for long hours after school, sometimes I wouldn’t even have a weekend off in order to excel at what I do. I was very successful in organizing major sports events inside and outside the school. I

developed an excellent relationship with staff members, students and people in the local community. One of the main reasons behind my success was the environment I worked in and the support of my principal. The very special atmosphere at NIS brings out the best in us, and I found myself wanting to do more and more because of that. The hard work was never a burden it was a pleasure just because it was at NIS. That experience at NIS landed me the job of a vice principal at one of the most prestigious schools in the Jordan when I went back to my home country, the experience I had is not just words on paper it is a real guide for my current job.

NIS – ‘NUTS & NUT PRODUCTS’

NIS has at least three children with a severe nut allergies. This allergic reaction is so pronounced that the allergy can be triggered simply by touch and smell.

This allergy is potentially life threatening for the concerned students. Therefore, we

must insist that all parents refrain from sending nuts or products containing nuts

to school.

UNWANTED ITEMS – CHEWING GUM

NIS considers chewing gum a totally inappropriate substance for children at the school. It causes huge problems for cleaning staff and is incredibly difficult to remove from clothing, from hair and books.

Please ensure that your children are not allowed to bring chewing gum to school.

UNWANTED ITEMS – Mobile Phones

Almost all mobile phones are now equipped with a camera. Having cameras, taking pictures and videos in school is strictly prohibited in KSA and by the Ministry of Education. Unless, directly requested by a teacher, as part of a lesson, any use of mobile phones or devices that can act as mobile phones, is strictly prohibited. Children who wish to speak to parents can only do so

from the Student Counsellor’s or Primary Supervisor’s office (after taking permission).

STUDENTS CAUGHT USING MOBILES, TAKING PHOTOS

WITH MOBILES OR DISTURBING CLASS WITH MOBILES, OR

OTHER INTERNET ENABED COMMUNICATION DEVICES,

WILL AUTOMATICALLY BE SUSPENDED FROM SCHOOL.

UNWANTED ITEMS – Fizzy Drinks

Please do not send children to school cans of

carbonated drinks. The cans are dangerous,

they make a mess when opening, is bad for

teeth and invariably impacts the behaviour of

young children.

PACKED LUNCHES For parents making up packed lunches, the Children's Food Trust recommends they include a piece of food from each of the following categories:

starchy foods like bread, pasta or potatoes fruit and veg, so sticks of cucumber, celery or carrot, alongside a

piece of fruit meat, fish, eggs and beans - strips of chicken or bean dips, it

suggests dairy food such as cheese in a sandwich or a yoghurt frais a drink - milk or water are the best choices for children's teeth, the

trust says, and if you want to pack fruit juice, stick to a 150ml portion But foods and drinks high in saturated fat, sugar and/or salt, like crisps and chocolate biscuits, should be avoided, the trust says.

MUMPS – Please check your children

We have just received a diagnosed case of Mumps, in the Primary School. Mumps is most recognisable by the painful swellings in the side of the face under the ears (the parotid glands), giving a person with mumps a distinctive "hamster face" appearance. Other symptoms of mumps include headaches, joint pain and a high temperature, which may develop a few days before the swelling of the parotid glands. PLEASE CHECK YOUR

CHILDREN.

DRIVERS & NADA SECURITY

The school has received a number of complaint regarding the attitudes and behaviour of certain drivers who are collecting children at the end of the day. Failing to drive carefully and

sensibly, not listening to security personnel and ‘racing’ for the gate are the main issues.

Therefore, in the interests of safety and student wellbeing we would kindly request that all parents and drivers behave appropriately and sensibly within the school car parking area.

Regrettably, those parents / drivers who fail to follow the instructions of the Nada Security staff, or who are witnessed driving dangerously will be required to park outside the main gates and walk from outside to collect the children.

If Nada Security elects to enforce the above penalty, the school will not be able to assist any affected parents in any way.

THE NIS PARENT CODE OF CONDUCT

SAVING OUR PLANET – GRADE 1

This week in Science, girls of Grade 1A learnt the importance of taking care of the Earth. Plastic water bottles, containers and saran wrap are some of the damaging items polluting our planet. It causes great harm to humans, plants and animals around the world. These items often end up where we don’t want them, like the ocean.

There are so many little things that even the youngest kids can do to help protect our planet, from saving water and electricity, to reducing, recycling and reusing trash. Students got excited about protecting the Earth and pledged to clean up their environment whenever they are presented with an opportunity to do so.

The girls brainstormed several ways on how we could further protect our planet and the possibilities seemed to be endless. Most of the suggestions included; turning off the lights and air-conditioning before you leave a room, not leaving the tap running whilst brushing your teeth which essentially wastes a great amount of water, planting more fruits and vegetables in our gardens, and saying no to unnecessary plastic bags and straws.

We all have a responsibility of keeping our planet safe and clean. Always remember to do your part by taking care of your surroundings and by encouraging your friends and family to do the same.

THE ROLE OF THE COUNSELLORS

Parents and children often wonder just what it is that school counsellors do on a daily basis. According to a current research:

Counsellors help individuals learn, understand themselves and their environment and be in a position to choose a right type of behaviour that will help them develop grow, progress, ascend,

mature and step up, educationally, vocationally and socio personally .

(Egbo, 2013)

Role of the School Counsellor at NIS.

At NIS Students are given support, guidance and opportunities through ‘Guidance Counselling’ services. These services are offered for both boys and girls in all the grades, especially catering for children in grade 4-12, which is an essential time of rapid growth and change. Children within these classes, particularly

adolescents, face unique and diverse challenges,

both personally and developmentally, that have an impact on academic achievement. With this in mind, NIS strive for a range of guidance counselling services that promote student achievement. At NIS we have two school counsellors (boys/ Girls) with a ratio of 1:250 recommended according to the American School Counsellor Association Guidelines. The role of the school counsellor has evolved over the past one hundred years, beginning with a concentration on career exploration, moving into personal/social counselling and then academic achievement.

Children need positive behavioural support in order for a number of discipline referrals to go down. The school counsellor is in a position to take action and implement a program to increase students’ knowledge, attitudes and skills to promote positive behaviour.

Today's school counsellors are vital members of the education team. They help all students in the areas of academic achievement,

career and social/emotional

development, ensuring today's students become the productive, well-adjusted adults of tomorrow. School counsellors aid in a student’s development in school, and can help children gain their confidence as learners.

As a parent, advice your children to seek school counsellors whenever they need help or if they are experiencing a barrier to success in school, having problems with their classmates, or other areas of their school life.

They should be reminded all times that seeking counselling takes courage. Knowing when you need help and asking for it is a sign of

strength and not a shame.

ENGLISH QUIZ 3

CAR PASSES – PRIVATE DRIVERS

During the THIS week 2019 car passes were distributed to those who have applied for them.

This occurred as you entered or exited the gate to the school, the security team were set up by the school entrance to complete the process.

A polite reminder to drive carefully when near the school and avoid using your mobile telephone whilst driving

APPOINTMENTS WITH TEACHING STAFF

If you need to see a faculty member, please make an appointment through the respective School Counsellor or Primary Supervisor. Please be prepared to fully disclose the reason for a meeting request so that they can decide who is best placed to meet with you. The Counsellor / Primary Supervisor will decide which staff member will be suitable and available to meet with you. However, unless there are exceptional circumstances we would caution it is not necessary for teacher and parents to meet during the first 2 -3 weeks of school. Teachers need time to get to know their students and children need time to get to know their teachers.

The best time to meet your child’s teacher / teachers is at the 1st Parent Teacher Conference, on 26th October, 2019.

In the event of a parental complaint all parents are requested to follow the procedure within the Parent Handbook.

END of SCHOOL – Private Transport

Parents who elect to transport children to the school either personally or with a private driver are reminded that they should collect the children each day. At 14:10 KG1 – 2 parents should collect their children from the ELC Department. Parents or drivers of other grades should meet their children on the artificial turf at the side of the Administration Building. Once children leave the school gate, parents / drivers should take great care. This is the responsibility of either the parent or private driver. NIS does not hold any responsibility in this regard. All children should be escorted by parents / drivers to their respective vehicles. Children should not be told to find the car alone, or to wait in the parking area.

DESPITE THIS WARNING WE ARE STILL

FINDING CHILDREN ON THE SCHOOL

CARPARK, LOOKING FOR PARENTS AND

DRIVERS. THIS IS HIGHLY DANGEROUS.

PARENTS / DRIVERS SHOULD MEET AND

COLLECT THE CHILDREN AS DESCRIBED

ABOVE. NIS TAKES NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR

ACCIDENTS CAUSED BY PARENTS / DRIVERS

FAILING TO COLLECT AND SUPERVISE THEIR

CHILDREN, AS REQUIRED ABOVE.

GRADE 9B (HISTORY)

This week Grade 9 boys learned about “WW1 Plans” with the help of

interesting activities. Then, they discussed in groups about the reasons

for the failure of the plans and, mentioned about ‘’If they were the Army

Generals, they would have done” such as the involvement

of Cartographers, Meteorologists, Climatologists, Geographers,

Intelligence Squad, Nutritionists and, Physicians in the army in order to

minimize war problems and, would have used their expertise in making

the effective war plans. Later on, their work was marked by the other

groups. It gave everyone a chance to identify the mistakes and improve

the work based on peer feedback. After this, they presented their group

work to the class and had cross-examined by other groups which created

a healthy learning environment. The group which came up with the

maximum number of relevant information and satisfied the other groups

by answering their questions was called the winner and awarded with

merits. They all did well and enjoyed the healthy competition among the

groups. Well done Boys! Keep it up!

SAFETY IN THE PARKING AREA

When visiting the school especially during the busy morning and afternoon periods please remember that you are not alone and please see the points below.

1. Look around and drive slowly: There are lots of small children around especially in the carpark and they are unpredictable.

2. Observe before reversing or setting off: We are all busy but be aware of other vehicles and what they may be about to do.

3. Carry out directions from security staff: The school is in a

busy compound and employs staff to assist and they know the best place to park.

4. You are responsible for your actions: Please be polite and

respect others.

5. Report any concerns: To either the school staff or the security members around, we like to know what’s happening.

CHAMPIONS’ LEAGUE - OPENER

Every year NIS hosts a Champions League football tournament during the lunch break for the students to participate and have fun. Grade 4 to 6 students will make up

the one category with the Grades 7 to 12 making up the other. The event allows students to come to school with the football kit that emulates the teams they support. With insistence from the students, NIS staff have also joined the champion’s league contesting against the Grades 7 to 12 students. This event helps students to learn the concept of sportsmanship, team spirit, and most importantly teamwork to overcome their opposition. The Champion League Opener match will be between the winners of last year (PSG) and NIS staff team on Thursday (26th September 2019). The tournament will start from Week 5. We the staff of NIS would like to take this opportunity to wish all participating teams and players the best over the tournament and may the best team be victorious.

CLASS SIZES

This week we have received a number of requests from parents to split classes into two smaller classes. This is not feasible, due to the numbers of students in these classes, economic factors and rooming restrictions. Ordinarily, NIS has a policy of having a maximum 25 - 26 children in each class. This policy has only been broken twice in ten years.

This year, as a result of dual maternity leave, we have one class in the whole school with more than 26 students. This class is being taught by Miss Nicole in the Primary School. She is more than capable of dealing with this number of students as these numbers are normal in western countries.

It is based on OECD Research, from the UK and Australia, which are the countries with systems that most accurately depict ours at NIS. {BELOW}

PRIMARY SCHOOLS

Average Number of students per class across all schools

United Kingdom 22.1 19.4 19.5 19.3 19.5 19.1 19 19.6

As we are UK modelled ‘British School’ the most pertinent data

comes from the UK. Primary schools in England have an

average of 25 students per class, meaning that possibly 50%

of classes have more than 25 children.

Professor John Hattie

found that reducing

class sizes has an effect

size of 0.21, which is

considered as

negligible.

Professor Hattie could be described as one of the

leading experts in education around the world.

This is supported by

Professor Rob Coe, who

told Mr. Tony personally

this week, that the

difference in educational

attainment in classes of

30, compared to classes of

20, is minimal.

MATHLETICS

At the end 2017 - 2018 NIS took the decision to switch from IXL Maths to Mathletics. The reasons being

a) Mathletics is more sophisticated and engages children far more effectively.

b) Mathletics is more closely aligned to the Cambridge Curriculum.

Your child is using Mathletics as part of their mathematics program at school. Mathletics is a targeted, rewarding and captivating online learning resource, which is aligned to curriculum standards. Your child has take-home access to Mathletics – they simply sign in with their school username and password using any compatible computer or mobile device. The extra Mathletics practice at home can make all the difference to your child’s progress. Encourage them to achieve a weekly target of 1000 points to earn a certificate, building through bronze, silver and gold across the school year. Go for gold!

MATHLETICS IS NOW

RUNNING. PLEASE USE

IT EACH DAY.

MATHLETICS MORE INFORMATION

Every year NIS looks at different ways as to how we can improve students mental ability in Mathematics from ELC level through Primary level and up to secondary level. One of the ways that we found is very useful was the implementation of Mathletics. This is the third year that NIS has implemented Mathletics and we found that there has been a year on year improvement in students mental ability. This year we have included Grade 8 students for the first time to help improve their mental ability which is vital in every students development. Every student has now received their login details from the respected grade teacher and should be working on the different skills online. The interesting aspect of Mathletics is that students have the ability to complete the teachers work set as well as do voluntary work online as well. Once students have completed assigned tasks from their respective teachers, they have the opportunity to compete against other students around the world in the form of Math games. Every task or skill completed online allows students to achieve points which means at the end of every week if they achieve a thousand points or more they receive a certificate from Mathletics directly. Wow, what a way to celebrate your hard work and constant effort with a certificate of achievement. The certificates vary in stages starting from Bronze, then Silver and then gold and each certificate is achieved with the number of points students achieve by doing the different skills set by the teacher as well as their own voluntary work that they complete. Below are the latest results of the number of certificates achieved thus far from ELC all the way up to grade 8.

Congratulations goes out to Sadaf Assad of Grade 5 Girls on achieving the first Silver certificate for 2019 - 2020 academic year and well done to all the Bronze certificate achievers on your success. Keep up the excellent work.

HEADLICE Now that your children are established in school, please be advised that we do have periodical outbreaks of Head Lice. This is particularly evident in girls from KG – G4

The following article hopefully will give you as parents some useful information of what to look for and how to treat your children.

Head lice are a very common in kids and easily spread around school. They are annoying but should not affect your child’s education. When Lice have been found it does not mean that your child or any other child in the class is dirty, and it is certainly NOT caused by places children visit or their cultural background.

How can I tell my child has Head Lice?

Your child may be itching their scalp more than usual. This will be especially around the nape of the neck and behind their ears.

Regular checks of your child’s hair will help spot early infestation. Parents should carefully look through the hair. You may see live lice on the scalp. Also you may find what appear to be grains of salt attached to the hair close to the scalp.

You may get a call from the school nurse who has found Lice during a routine check at school.

How to treat.

As soon as you discover your child has Head Lice then a simple treatment from the Pharmacy and a thorough combing regime is all that is required.

If you find Lice on your child, then keep them way from school until you have treated them. As soon as your child has had their first treatment they are able to return to school. The school may ask you to send a photograph of the product you have used on your child to be sure that treatment has commenced.

If the School Nurse finds your child has Head Lice, then you will be called to collect your child from school immediately. Your child cannot stay in class with other students.

Remember Head Lice is not a reflection on you as a parent or your child it is just a normal part of going to school.

PLEASE inform school as soon as you find Head Lice on your child.

For further information, please have a look at the following websites

Checks will be completed over the following calendar weeks

Wk 11 – 10.11.19

Wk 19 – 19.02.20

Wk 26 – 15.03.20

Wk – 31 19.04.20 Mrs. Jean & Mrs. Jayne will visit all classes over the course of the designated weeks. All parents will be notified via Class Dojo when cases are confirmed. A general message will be posted informing parents that we have confirmed Head Lice Cases and to be vigilant regarding their child. https://parents.education.govt.nz/primary-school/wellbeing/head-lice/

HEADLICE REPORT

During last week Mrs. Jayne and Nurse Jean performed physical inspections of the hair of all the children from Pre - KG – Grade 3. They are pleased to report that no cases of head lice were reported in any of the classes. However, we urge parents, particularly of girls with long hair, to check regularly for this and to notify the school in the event of any head lice being found.

JUNIOR CHAMPIONS’ LEAGUE G2 – 3

The Junior Champions League for Grade 2 and Grade 3 Boys will be starting from Sunday 13th October. The league will run until Thursday 14th of November. Every week, four teams will play a football match during their lunch break. The fixtures have been arranged so each team will play one game every two weeks and will play against different teams. Grade 2 and Grade 3 students will receive further information in a parent letter that will come home this week. This letter will contain information about your child’s team, the kit they are required to wear, and the weeks they are allocated to play. Please read the letter carefully and contact Miss Prue on Class Dojo if there are any problems. Information about the games that are being played each week will be published in the newsletter shortly. We will publish the results of each match each week so make sure you check the newsletter starting in Week 7. We can’t wait to watch the students enjoy this department competition. Good luck Grade 2 and 3 students!

FIRE DRILL REPORT

One of the school’s responsibilities and priorities is to train students to evacuate in case of fire. The training of the NIS students took place on Monday the 16th of September at 8:00 am. It was very successful evacuation. The whole process was completed within five minutes and in the presence of firefighters. We always take it very serious because as you all know …………

SAFETY COMES FIRST.

SCIENCE IS FUN!!

Looking to learn more about skeletons and bones? Ask the grade 3 girls all you need to know about a skeleton. During the past few weeks, the grade 3 girls have been learning about the human skeleton. They discovered many different facts about their own skeleton that they found quite fascinating. An activity they definitely enjoyed was building the skeleton on an A3 page. This activity reinforced all the facts and knowledge they currently learnt during Science periods. Science was made fun and learning was displayed through the enthusiasm and participation the girls displayed in the lessons.

D.I.Y ENTHUSIASTS

Grade 5B boys are do-it-yourself (DIY) enthuiasts. They have spent a considerable amount of time creating brilliant things out of paper,

cardboard and wooden sticks. For example, Mohamed Nashat surprised

us with a drawing of a small colourful fish, which can be unfolded to show

a great-mouthed fish. Second, Abdullah Masoud astonished us with two

amazing two-passenger planes and a beautiful bed. Third, Karim Atta built

his own spaceship with a porthole to see the outer space. In addition,

Yousef Alhaddad drew some creatures on different folds of the same

paper, but in an innovative way. They have successfully integrated writing skill with speaking skill. They gave a presentation to tell their peers how to make these shapes using the mechanics of instructional writing which they have studied this term. They enjoyed that learning experience so much.
