At our last Church Council meeting on July 14 th , several of you came to ask questions about the resolutions that were voted to send to the General Con- ference in May. I want to thank everyone for his or her concern and interest. Asking questions is the way all conducted himself or herself in a respectful and courteous way. That is not the case in many churches when these issues are open for discussion. Again, I appreciate all who were there and for the calm way you asked question, and received answers. I know we did not answer all the questions; there is much I do not know myself. I would always refer you to the United Methodist website, umc.org, for more information. As things come up, I will send out an email with links to material and resources pertinent to the goings on within our denomination. I have already sent a couple of those email links out. I know many do not have email, but we all know someone who has computer ac- cess. Let me know any way I can help those folks to receive any further web arti- cles I come across. I know all of you will be in prayer as our denomination struggles to find a way forward. Before any decision we make here at Mocks, make sure you are doing your due diligence. Be in prayer; get all the facts, meet together, with all sides given a voice. I will do my best the last 11 months I have remaining to help to get information to you. Be careful spreading information that you are not sure about. Ask me, and if I do not know, again, I will do my best to find the answer. I urge everyone to have patience, do not jump to conclusions or make decisions on things you do not have to right now. As they say, “Don’t put the cart before the horse.” We really will not know anything further until after General Conference, convening in Minneapolis, MN, from May 5-15, 2020. There are many people working very hard to preserve the denomination. Please, give them a chance. Once more, I am grateful for your passion. On another note, I mentioned during the service on July 21 st that a couple at Bermuda Run needed transportation to church. This is a great ministry oppor- tunity. Out of our 83 average for worship attendance, three women called me. I am thankful for their willingness to help. However, this was not exactly an impas- sioned response. There could have more volunteers. I wonder how many others need rides to church. Bermuda Village and Bermuda Commons are right down the road and across the street from one another. In addition, we have a church van. If you are interested in pursuing this potential ministry, let me know. We can get you set up to be a van driver. What would it be like if we had four volun- teer drivers? That would be once a month on Sunday to drive and pick up folks and bring them to church. We are called to go, by Jesus himself. It’s in the Bi- ble. I hope there is a passion to begin a new ministry here at Mocks. We will see. Twisted Sisters Book Club August 2019

4.0 stars

In June, Twisted Sisters Book Club read Monday’s Not Coming by Tiffany Jackson. While this is listed as a Young Adult book, it was a very serious topic. We had mixed feelings about this book. It was interesting but not everyone will like it. This book is completely different from anything else we have read. It deals with child abuse; which is a reality for many families.

Claudia and Monday live in subsidized housing in Washington, DC. Both are poor, but Monday is poorer. Claudia comes from a stable, loving family; Monday’s family has problems. But, Claudia and Monday have been friends for years and are inseparable. After Claudia spends several weeks in the summer with her grandparents in Georgia, she can’t find Monday when she returns home. When Claudia questions Monday’s family, she can’t get a straight answer. She expresses her concern to her parents, teachers and guidance counselor, but almost everyone assures her that Monday is fine. The tension builds as time passes with no sign of Monday. Claudia and her family report Monday’s disappearance to the police, and again are told not to worry “because teenage girls often run away.” With the exception of Claudia’s family, nobody understands the bond between the two girls; Monday would never have run away without telling Claudia…..

Join us at our next meeting, August 3rd at Panera Bread in Clemmons. We will be discussing Kingdom of the Blind by Louise Penny. Then, in August we will be reading Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens, which several people have already commented is AWESOME! Note the change in order of our reading and the change in date for our “September” meeting. Our September meeting will actually take place on August 31st at 9:00 at Panera. Bookmarks annual Festival of Books will be Sept 6-8 this year, so come out and meet some new authors and find some new books!
