egas PBS had a wonderful 2014 highlighted by breathtakingnational programming, increased local productions, impactful educational services, and rising viewer and cor-porate support. Your letters, emails and calls repeatedlystate that you value Vegas PBS as a trusted programming

source that is uniquely different from commercial broadcasting, treatingaudiences as citizens and not simply consumers. As recent ratings resultsillustrate, that approach continues to create valued programming thatNevadans want to watch.

For the 2013-14 television season, PBS had the 5th largest primetimehousehold rating among all broadcast and cable networks, up from 8ththe prior year and 11th two years ago. While most over the air broadcastnetworks are losing audience, PBS is growing audience with significant-ly larger viewership than commercial cable channels like HBO, Discovery,Disney, CNN, FOX, HGTV or A&E. Locally, Vegas PBS maintained its sta-tus as the second most-watched PBS station in the U.S., based on ourpercentage of whole-day local audience.

Programming highlights include Ken Burns’ The Roosevelts: AnIntimate History, which reached more than 33.3 million national viewersacross the seven nights of the series. An average of 13.2 million viewerstuned in to Season 4 of Masterpiece Classic: Downton Abbey, reinforcing itsstatus as PBS’ highest-rated drama in history. Viewers also enjoyed newhistory and science programs about JFK from American Experience, NOVAand Secrets of the Dead.

Our sesquicentennial programs last month including Makers: Womenin Nevada History, Restoration Neon and The Story of Classic Las Vegasreached more than 100,000 viewers. Local series and specials likeElection 2014, Inside Education, Nevada Week in Review and Surviving SinCity covered meaningful issues, while digital productions like BackyardSessions and Stories of Service presented local musicians and heroic veterans.

Our multi-platform vision of public service television reflects howvideo content is “consumed” in our increasingly mobile world. In additionto our TV services every month, Americans watch more than 415 millionPBS videos across web, mobile and connected device platforms. InSeptember, streaming on PBSKIDS.org reached 281 million downloadsnationally with more than 1.6 million in Southern Nevada! This educa-tional impact is improving the literacy and STEM preparedness of ourlocal kids.

None of these accomplishments would be possible without the contin-ued financial support of our members. As we embark on the last on-airfundraising drive of the calendar year, we are pleased to bring you newepisodes of some of your favorite series: Downton Abbey Rediscovered,Antiques Roadshow, American Masters, Nature, NOVA and PBS arts pro-grams. We hope you’ll enjoy these programs and choose to make a dona-tion to support your favorites, as well as the programs you enjoy on VegasPBS all year long. Have a safe and happy holiday season.

egas PBS is known for outstanding children’s programs such as Sesame Street

that have helped educate generations of Americans. These programs, support-

ed by viewers like you, often feature beloved authors and characters such as

Dr. Seuss and The Cat in the Hat or Marc Brown and Arthur.

To further leverage the appeal of these children’s programs to promote family literacy,

Vegas PBS launched our local Ready To Learn (RTL) more than 15 years ago. Since then, RTL

has grown and thrived through the support of grants, foundation and businesses. In addition

to financial support, a small army of dedi-

cated volunteers donates their time and

energy to ensure the success of our educa-

tional efforts. Annually, tens of thousands

of families are served through more than

1,000 RTL family engagement workshops

across Southern Nevada. To prepare for

these workshops, thousands of take-home

resource kits must be put together.

Recently, we were fortunate to have two

enthusiastic volunteer groups work with

us for their community service projects.

Twenty energetic Steelcase employees visiting Las Vegas competed against each other to

see who could complete the most nutrition resource packets during their two-hour stay. They

even calculated how many calories the activity burned! Overall, volunteers compiled 1,665

nutrition packets containing a new book, resource handouts, materials to create a healthy

shopping list and an interactive “good nutrition” game for kids. Tracy VanderMeer, coordina-

tor for Steelcase volunteers, commented, “Thank you so much for your hospitality and for

allowing our folks to come work on a project that is so meaningful to the community. It’s

exactly what we were hoping for. They had a great time doing it!”

Students and staff from Kaplan College also devoted “Make a Difference Day,” by compil-

ing more than 3,022 dental health kits supporting the Reading For Smiles™ project. Working

assembly-line fashion, volunteers filled kits with new dental health books, toothbrushes,

flossers and resource information. Student Success Coordinator Cheryl Cohen wrote, “Thank

you so very much for allowing us to participate. I was surprised to see just how much you

guys offer the Las Vegas community. We truly had a great time helping to put together those

packets.”

Vegas PBS is grateful to all the volunteers who help throughout the year. Our volunteers

are a trusted, valued and essential part of our Vegas PBS family!

ntiques Roadshow meets ThisOld House in this new eight-part series featuring the mar-vels of engineering from

America’s grand history of ambition andinnovation. From the 1880s through WorldWar II, the United States advanced the sci-ence of aeronautics, propulsion, naviga-tion and sound with inventions that wereboth functional and artistic: locomotives, fighter planes, yachts and the world’slargest pipe organ. Sadly, few of theseicons from our past remain. Now, eightnational heirlooms are rescued from thejunkyard and painstakingly restored totheir original glory, offering poignantglimpses of days gone by.

Follow the dramatic restorations from

coast to coast: the world’s largest pipeorgan in Atlantic City; a surviving 1920sfire engine from Kansas City; a Wisconsin“fish car” designed to transport live fish bytrain; a priceless carrousel; a World War IIspy plane; one of the first U.S. yachts toround Cape Horn; and a famous steamlocomotive.

The sheer scale of these restorations isdaunting, especially when combined withbudgets, deadlines and dangerous equip-ment. There are no blueprints, only cluesfrom history, science and the memories ofmechanics and veterans.

This series will take the place of repeatepisodes of This Old House and Ask This OldHouse, which will return to the schedulein February.

At this terrifying height, his laborers toiled without safety nets, applying novel, untried methods on a trulymonumental scale. More than four millionbricks could collapse at any moment andwe still do not understand howBrunelleschi prevented it. n the mid-1960s, Bernard Madoff tapped

money from Jewish businessmen at exclu-

sive country clubs with the promise of

steady, guaranteed returns on their invest-

ments. He then set his sights on Europe and Latin

America, brokering deals with powerful hedge

fund managers and feeder funds from Buenos

Aires to Geneva. Billions of dollars were chan-

neled to Madoff’s investment firm and his “feed-

ers” became fabulously wealthy. There were alle-

gations that Madoff was “front-running” or oper-

ating a Ponzi scheme which the Securities and

Exchange Commission investigated several times

over two decades. Madoff remained untouched

until December 11, 2008, when he finally admit-

ted it was all “one big lie.” This film unravels the

story behind the world’s first truly global Ponzi

scheme. This deception that lasted longer,

reached wider and cut deeper than any other

business scandal in history.

Rickover: The Birth of Nuclear PowerTuesday, December 9 at 8 p.m. on Vegas PBS Channel 10 Combative, provocative and blunt, Admiral Hyman G. Rickover was a flamboyant maverick, aunique American hero. When few thought it possible, then-Captain Rickover harnessed thepower of the atom to drive the first nuclear-powered submarine, the USS Nautilus. Its tripunder the polar ice pack was one of the great adventure stories of the 1950s. Later, he oversawthe development of the world's first commercial nuclear power plant. Rickover's achievementsmade him into a national celebrity. Many questioned Rickover’s goal of an all-nuclear navy andothers questioned his creation of a technocratic elite – his own navy within the Navy. However, few contested that he had transformed the Navy and changed the course of America's techno-logical development. Today, questions about nuclear power have once more arisen. Also, manywonder whether America can maintain its technological pre-eminence due to global competition.

It alsoheralds the arrival of Doc’s even moretactless mother, played by the inimitableClaire Bloom.
