MODULE FIVE
It takes Pluto approximately 247.7 years
to make a complete orbit around the Sun
and hence the zodiacal wheel. Pluto is a
very slow-moving planet in terms of orbital
speed and this means that with the
current human life expectancy of 75-81
years, no person will live to experience a
Pluto return to their natal position.
Pluto has been covered in depth in other prior Modules in the Astrology for the
Soul Course, but as a summary, Pluto in the Natal Chart correlates to the Soul’s
intention for understanding the meaning of life itself, manifesting as the deep
emotional security needs and amplified motivations for the individual. There may
be an urge to push past one’s perceived limitations to evolve into one’s authentic
self.

Pluto’s Process of Metamorphosis
As Pluto moves slowly through the zodiac and has a retrograde period of about 6
months each year, Pluto transits are an unfolding process over time, rather than
simply a momentary experience.
The Pluto square is one of the ultimate Pluto transits that puts us in touch with the
solitude of the Soul. We may for a time feel as if no one understands us at as
deep a level as we know ourselves. And in fact, it’s a time to ‘dig deep’ and
access areas of the psyche that were previously unknown. Our unconscious urges
and drives may even overwhelm us for better or for worse and we can experience
this as an amplification of psychic energy that drives us beyond our conscious
mind and intentions. Part of the lesson is to learn how to access our own power
and wield it with conscious intention and mastery.

MODULE FIVE
Pluto transits provide the context and emotional landscape of the environment.
Faster moving planets create the immediate content and can often trigger
experiences that Pluto is laying the groundwork for.
Pluto may cover a degree (or a tight orb) over a period of 1 - 3 years, meaning a
transit of Pluto will be a process covering this extended length of time as the
experience unfolds. The first contact is often the most challenging as it
introduces the Pluto experience which the native may not feel totally prepared
for.
As Pluto correlates to the unconscious, there may be a “bringing to
consciousness” of an issue that has been festering for a long time, denied or
ignored. It is now coming to the forefront and must be addressed when Pluto
contacts a natal planet. Pluto themes become urgent and relentless (see
Plutonic themes above) often having to do with power, powerlessness or facing
what has been hidden. Something needs to be eliminated or transformed in
order for the process to be completed.

Transiting Pluto aspecting a Natal Planet
As stated above, the first contact of Pluto often brings an issue to consciousness
that has been hidden. It can take the form of one’s own unconscious shadow or a
Plutonic event or person that represents one’s internal struggle with control.
Typically, Pluto will transit a degree, retrograde over it and then transit it a third
time, this process can take 1 - 3 years during which time a process of
metamorphosis is possible. However, nothing is guaranteed. One can have an
intense Pluto experience and yet decide to remain unchanged emotionally. As
with all astrological transits, one’s evolution is dependent upon one’s own
consciousness.

MODULE FIVE
As the natal Lunar Nodes correlate to the process of evolution in the current
lifetime, a transit of Pluto invites opportunities that create an urgency of
evolutionary potential and pushing past one’s perceived limitations. Transiting
Pluto aspecting the North Node creates conditions for the deep emotional
security needs to be elevated toward the evolutionary intention of the soul,
depending upon the nature of the aspect. Transiting Pluto aspecting the South
Node correlates to conditions where material from the karmic past must be
resolved for the soul to transform in accordance with one’s evolutionary
intentions. Transiting Pluto squaring the Nodes illuminates the desire of the soul to
integrate significant lessons unresolved due to compulsive emotional security
needs and to make new choices that lead to evolutionary growth.

Pluto Transits by HouseWhen Pluto first enters a house, there is a territory in the life that is calling for
transformation. As mentioned above, Pluto transits can represent a person, event
or circumstance that has the effect of transforming the area of life represented
by the house. Or it could be the native’s own unconscious that is affecting
change in this area, often in the form of breakdown, elimination and with the
potential of eventual regeneration.

THE TRANSITING LUNAR NODES
Transiting Pluto, the Moon's Nodes and Eclipses
MODULE FIVE
Significance of the Lunar Nodes
The Lunar Nodes are points in space where the path of the
Moon around the Earth intersects with the apparent path of the
Sun around the Earth (the Ecliptic).
The transiting Nodal axis creates conditions of potential choice
that correlate to evolutionary growth (North Node) and karmic
resolution (South Node).
Orbital speedThe transiting Lunar Nodes take approximately 18.6 years to make a complete
revolution around the zodiac.
Nodal ReturnsEvery 18.6 years from birth, the transiting Lunar Nodes conjunct the natal Lunar
Nodes creating conditions of alignment in one’s evolutionary path. Relationships,
events or circumstances illuminate areas of stagnancy as well as opportunities to
evolve beyond one’s conditioning and known sense of self.
Nodal OppositionWhen the transiting Lunar Nodes oppose the natal Lunar Nodes, similar conditions
occur as during the conjunction, however, there may be a heightened sense of
urgency as the karmic past and future evolutionary potential create conditions of
a culmination of one cycle of evolutionary development.
The Transiting Lunar Nodes Aspecting Natal Planets or AnglesThe transits of the Lunar Nodes to a planet or angle in the Natal Chart offer
opportunities for that planet or angle to align with the native’s evolutionary
purpose for that planetary archetype. Transits of the North Node offer choices
and experiences of potential growth while transits of the South Node create
conditions of resolving of past karma to be transformed for evolutionary
purposes.

A NOTE ON ECLIPSES (BY TRANSIT)

MODULE FIVE
Eclipses occur approximately every 6 months
as the transiting Sun and Moon align with the
Lunar Nodes. These alignments create
powerful forces of fate, destiny and crisis
leading to the potential for significant
transformation. Eclipses continue to be
mysterious alignments whose effects vary
greatly. They are often referred to as “wild
cards”, shifts of fate and periods of the
unconscious permeating the conscious mind.
Solar EclipsesA Solar Eclipse is a New Moon (Moon conjunct Sun) that occurs within 18
degrees of the Lunar Nodes.
Lunar Eclipses
A Lunar Eclipse is a Full Moon (Moon opposite Sun) that occurs within 12 degrees
of the Lunar Nodes.
As New Moons correlate to a turning point that begins a new cycle, a Solar
Eclipse heightens it’s significance. The solar light of conscious awareness is
eclipsed by the shadow of the Moon. The significance of the Moon archetype
such as the inner self, emotional needs, connections to the past, desires for
safety and security, temporarily takes precedence over the Sun’s symbolism of
public image and conscious awareness.
Similar to a Full Moon, a Lunar Eclipse is a period of the culmination of a cycle,
with amplified significance. At the Lunar Eclipse, the Earth’s shadow falls upon
the Moon, and the symbolism of the archetype is temporarily eclipsed. As the
Moon represents our emotional attachments to the past and needs for safety
and security, these conditioned responses have an opportunity to be released so
that one may experience their conscious desires and public image in new ways.

A Note on ProgressionsAs Pluto and the Lunar Nodes move slowly through the zodiac, they do not move
significantly enough in Progressions. Should they contact a natal planet or point
by degree and minute, they can be delineated similar to a transit as mentioned
above.

EXERCISES
Using your astrology software or Ephemeris, calculate your Pluto Square transit
(when transiting Pluto is 90 degrees from your natal Pluto). This generally occurs
in the late 30’s to early 40’s. It is often a period occurring over 1-3 years, pay
special attention to the first time Pluto squares your natal Pluto.

Your Pluto Square Pluto
Write down the dates of:
Pluto first squaring your natal Pluto
Pluto retrograding over the square of your natal Pluto (if not exact then
by 1-2 degrees)
The second direct pass of Pluto squaring your natal Pluto (if not exact
then by 1-2 degrees)
If this has already occurred for you, recount what Plutonic experiences were
present for you at that time. What did you learn about your personal psychology?
Were there any dark nights of the soul or periods of digging deep within? Was
Pluto symbolic of a person, circumstance or event? What was the metamorphosis
in your life?
If you have not yet had your Pluto square, reflect upon the house and sign Pluto
will be squaring your Pluto in the future as well as your natal Pluto by house and
sign. What does this suggest to you about the potential for metamorphosis? What
conflicts or crisis might emerge to show you where you're resisting change? How
could you be empowered by this transit?
