Hydra Set® Precision Load PositionerSince 1965, the Hydra Set Precision Load

Positioner from Del Mar Avionics® has provided theaerospace, aviation, power generation and other heavyindustries with a proven means to allow critical loads,suspended from a crane or hoist, to be mated or demated,raised or lowered, with excursions to within 0.001 inch(0.025 mm).

During a typical placement, the load is loweredby the crane or hoist to a safe distance from its intendedresting position. Then, the operator engages the HydraSet Load Positioner for final and reliable incrementalplacement to ensure safety to the load and surroundingcritical components. Any impediment encountered dur-ing the mating/demating process is sensed, immediatelyhalting the load from any further movement. OtherHydra Set models, including those which are manuallyoperated or remotely controlled, require physical connec-tion between the operator and the Hydra Set LoadPositioner.

Easier Readings with Wireless Remote Control All cable connections between the operator and

the Hydra Set Load Positioner are eliminated. There isno possibility of damage from cable or hose entangle-ments. Nolonger do users need to use binoculars, strain gauges, voiceradio equipment or other aids to obtain accurate readingsfrom the Hydra Set load gauge. Load ControllerMounted on the

Hydra Set Load Positioner,this sub-system containsthe electronics, motors andbatteries. The Load Controller iscommanded by digital instructionscontained in radio transmissionsfrom the Hand-Held Unit. HydraSet load and controller statusinformation is transmitted to theHand-Held Unit from the Load Controller electronics.

Load Controller electronics include the radiotransceiver, microcontroller, and separate modules foraccommodating interface functions and for driving themotors which control the hydraulic flow.

Load Controller power is provided by14.5-Volt nickel-metal- hydride rechargeablebatteries. To ensure continued operation andlabor efficiency, a spare quick-connect/disconnectbattery pack is furnished with each LoadController.

Hand-Held UnitThis portable device is easily carried by the

operator with shoulder straps. Numerous controls anddisplays provide maximum control over allfunctions of the Hydra Set Load Positioner.

For example, a LOAD DEVIATIONwarning light glows if the indicated load weightvaries from the preset load weight, alerting theoperator with an immediate indication of theload encountering an obstruction. A liquid-crystal display shows the load weight, travel andload deviation, battery status, rate of travel andsystem set-up options. The user can pre-selectseveral parameters to match the exactrequirements of each load.

System functions are controlled byseven push buttons on the Hand-Held Unit,including OPERATE, MENU and ENTER.The others function according to variablelegends which appear above each button.

Up and down movement of the load iscontrolled by a joystick. A large, red, manually-controlled EMERGENCY STOP (E-STOP)button is prominently located on the unit toenable the operator to immediately halt allsystem operations. The unit is powered by onerechargeable 14.5-Volt nickle-metal-hydridebattery.

Ultra-Reliable Data TransmissionTransceivers embody "Spread

Spectrum" technology to provide optimum

data transmission and control. Several separatefrequencies are scanned sequentially to identifythe clearest signal, which is automatically selected,

providing uninterrupted data transmissionand control.

Built-in Safeguards to Protect Critical LoadsIf any condition occurs which may

compromise safety or successful operation,actuation of the manual E-STOP button onthe Hand-Held Unit halts instantly all loadmovement.

To prevent damage to critical loadsduring de-mating operations when the loadhad been secured to a base platform, theknown weight of the load is entered in theHand-Held Unit. During the de-matingoperation, as this known load weight isapproached, a warning light on the unit isilluminated; if the known load weight isexceeded, an automatic E-STOP halts thede-mating operation.

Up to eight malfunctioning conditionswill generate an automatic E-STOP, such as adefective sensor, transmitter or joystick, or asevere discharge of one or more of the batteries or a loss of communications. Interactivedisplays assist the operator in clearing anE-STOP before normal operations can beresumed. Equally important, the system willnot respond to an incorrect command.

�� Method of OperationThe Hydra Set® Precision Load Positioner may

be operated by one of four basic methods. Models Othrough F may be operated manually up to 50 feet awayby manipulating the up pump or down valve handles viaup and down lanyards. Models O through FS may alsobe fitted with the optional CCI-400 Remote Controlleraccessory for precise pneumatic (nitrogen gas) operationfrom up to 100 feet away from the Hydra Set® unit.

Models O through FS can be configured aswireless remote control systems. Models DHS 75,DHS 150, DHS 250 and DHS 300 are electro-hydraulically operated.

Specifications

The electrically operated remote controlconsole is standard and contains built-in electronicdigital display functions indicating piston travel andweight of load being positioned.

�� Operating NoteOptimum performance is achieved when the

load to be raised or lowered is mid-range of the capacityof the unit to be selected. Avoid operating with loads atless than 20 percent of the total capacity of the unitselected.

Helpful Messages Assist the OperatorThe user may select from a number of operating

options to suit a particular task or working environment,such as choosing operating modes, selecting data logging(optional), tare-set options, time and date, and units ofmeasurement.
