DIRECTOR'S NOTES
Frank Loesser, whose reputation for writing sparkling music and lyrics had been firmly estabished on the Broadway stage with such smash successess as Where 's Charley and Guys and Dolls, undertook in 1952 to adapt Sidney Howard's Pulitzer Prize play They Knew What They Wanted into a musical. The task took almost four years, for Loesser proposed to write the libretto as well as music and lyrics. Though he referred to it as an "extended musical comedy," others called it probably the most ambitiously operatic work ever created for the Broadway Musical theatre. Included among its almost 50 musical numbers were recitatives, arias, duets, trios, quartets, choral passages (and a minimum of dialogue without music) . In form clearly more operatic than the traditional Broadway musical, THE MOST HAPPY FELLA opened in May of 1956 and ran for 676 performances. A palpable hit by any standards, it also rece ived the New York Critics Circle Award as the best musical of the '56-'57 season. For Loesser, it was an especially notable achievement, enhant:ed by his taking as a real-l ife bride Jo Sullivan, who played Rosabella in the original production. That marriage remained strong and vital until Loesser's death a few years ago.
