Pastor’s LetterMany of us find the front of the St. Benedict Church to be shockingly different now without the two trees on either side of the steps. It is radically different now. Two of the three main reasons for doing so are evident now as well. The trees had grown so close to the front of the building that they were affecting the brick and mortar when wet from rain and snow. You might have seen a seedling growing on one of the sub-roofs on the left side of the building too! The trees’ healthy root systems were also affecting the building’s foundation. So, after the façade is cleaned, some less intrusive and less obscuring additional green landscaping will be added back to those corner spaces. It will just take some time to adjust to seeing most of the front of that building again! Please let me know if you have other suggestions about the front of that building – flags, occasional banners…?!
Another summer refurbishing project that is progressing well is the Sts. Peter & Paul Oratory bells project. The components that are now at the Verdin Company’s manufacturing center in Cincinnati are almost ready for being brought back to Lore City for installation. Our project liaison reassured me this past Monday that they are aware of our hopes to have the bells ringing for this month’s Sts. Peter & Paul Feast Day Mass and Picnic on Thursday, June 29th. The Mass is planned for 6:00 p.m. that evening, concluding with a blessing of the refurbished bells and followed by a picnic in the pavilion and social hall with games for the children (and young
at heart!). The whole parish and visitors and friends are welcome to that event.
I am grateful that the bells refurbishing project has been essentially paid for with simply a “test the waters” fund-raising campaign. Those waters were very generous! We have only about a $2,000 gap between what the costs are and what has been given or pledged. Simply contact me if you would like to make any new donations or for reminders about pledge amounts. The Verdin Company likewise provided a $7,500 grant from their foundation. All of this is much appreciated. I have always loved the local custom of ringing the bells at the Consecration during Mass, proclaiming Jesus’ presence in the Eucharist throughout that valley. Several parishioners have mentioned hearing the bells many miles away.
And, again, congratulations to our parishioner Tricia Oswald – now Sr. Clare Rose – who began the novitiate step of formation just this past Sunday, June 11th, as a religious sister with the Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity! May she and all three of this year’s novices experience an abundance of joy and peace as they enter into a time of closer study of the life and charisms of St. Francis, approaches to deeper personal and community prayer, and other aspects of formation as novices.
May the Lord help us all to continue journeying together, alive in Jesus Christ, always ready for the gift of eternal life.

As in the past, donations of clean and saleable children’s clothing, toys, books, household items and appliances; tools; decorations and craft items, furniture, etc. Adult clothing does not sell well, so please bring in only the best! Please, no worn, dirty, or musty items from the basement! We just have to haul it to the dumpster. If you wouldn’t buy it at a yard sale, we won’t be able to sell it either!

SCRIPTURE READINGS FOR THE 12TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIMEJUNE 25, 2017
In today’s society, being a disciple of Jesus often means going against the crowd. Our scriptures assure us that we have nothing to fear, for God is always with us. As we prepare to celebrate the sacred mysteries, let us acknowledge our failings and fears.
Both the first reading and the gospel focus on the two-fold reality that while the prophet/preacher will surely suffer persecution, God is always there to care for and protect those who remain faithful to the task.
In the first reading, Jeremiah confesses his fear of persecution, even by friends, and then reminds himself that God is with him. So even in the face of persecution, Jeremiah can praise God.
Our gospel is a continuation for the 11th Sunday in Ordinary Time and its “sending” of the apostles. This section focuses on the inevitable persecution of the apostles with the promise of protection.
God does not remove the suffering but is always there to comfort, protect and see the task to its fruition.
Jeremiah 20:10-13 The Lord is our mighty champion.- When have you felt so overwhelmed by a situation only to find comfort in God alone?
Romans 5:12-15 The gift is not like the transgression.- How have you come to know the free gift of God’s grace in your sinfulness?
Matthew 10:26-33Everyone who acknowledges me before others I will acknowledge before my Father in heaven.- When have you had to seek courage to be true to your belief in God? What was the situation?
Being free of fear, being courageous in the Lord and being humble are the focuses of the Sunday readings over these next 3 Sundays. We make a transition next week from the first six months of the liturgical year, reaching all the way back into Advent of last year. We could say that after focusing much on who Jesus is, remembering key events in His life from his birth until his Ascension into heaven, as well as celebrating Pentecost, Holy Trinity Sunday and Corpus Christi Sunday, we now shift to focusing on how to be disciples of Jesus.
Our Sunday Gospel readings over these next several Sundays are from a part of the Gospel of Matthew where Jesus forms his disciples. This formation is both about how a disciple of Jesus lives out his or her faith and about the quality of a Christian disciple’s heart. A Christian disciple faces life free from fear, courageously and humbly.
There are many things that could cause us fear. We could be afraid of not having our physical needs met. We could be afraid of not meeting obligations to other people. And, we could be afraid of having to face loneliness.
Next week’s Gospel and first reading face even deeper reasons to be afraid.
It might be difficult to imagine a very close friend betraying us. In next Sunday’s first reading, the prophet Jeremiah describes this experience. “Those who were [emphasis added] my friends are on the watch for any misstep of mine” (Jeremiah 20:11). Jeremiah had been raised up as a prophet to warn the Jewish people about how to avoid an impending attack from the mighty Babylonian army. Key to that warning was calling them to a more faithful living out of their moral lives outside of their worship at the Temple in Jerusalem. People were starting to live in a way that presumed and took for granted God’s mercy. Jeremiah had the unpopular task of calling people to conversion.

Because of this he experienced people who had been close friends turning on him and trying to cause fear in his heart. Jeremiah’s trust in the Lord helped him to be confident in spite of that deeper reality that would cause fear.
Next Sunday’s Responsorial Psalm echoes Jeremiah’s experience: “I have become an outcast to my brothers, a stranger to my children, because zeal for your house consumes me, and the insults of those who blaspheme you fall upon me” (Psalm 69:9-10). King David proclaims that the Lord delivered him from those fears.
Jesus calls us to face our fears of losing our souls. We are faced with so many temptations to compromise our faith. Jesus reassures us, however, that the Lord wants to assist us in those times. “Even all the hairs of your head are counted” (Matthew 10:30) and “Everyone who acknowledges me before others I will acknowledge before my heavenly Father” (10:32).
May the Lord’s mercy and protection free us from our deepest fears!
