Offices? Departments?
Why Independent Agencies?
Independent agencies have been formed for numerous reasons, including:• being assigned a task or function that does not fit
well within the existing departmental structure.
• protecting the agency’s purposes from the influence of both partisan and pressure politics.
• being created outside the departmental structure by accident.
They may work with, but not for, a department.
Three types of agencies.
Independent Executive Agencies.
As important/powerful as a department, but don’t have department status.Perform an administrative task within the executive branch.Examples include NASA, the EPA, the Social Security Administration, FEMA and FDIC.
