In other words, Victoria’s schools have the least amount of work to do in meeting the new National standards, as the curriculum taught presently in state schools is already considered to be world class and way ahead of the other states and territories. In order for our brains to function at their best, hydration is essential. At MtDandy PS we encourage students to have a drink bottle on their table and of course, we have many fountains to drink from when outside. We all know that dehydration leads to fatigue, headaches and other physically draining symptoms that interfere with learning. In order for each child to give themselves the best chance at a productive day, drinking plenty of water is the healthy and sensible solution. It has finally arrived! This week our Grade Sixes get to put all of their hard practice into action and present

Beauty is a Beast to the Mt Dandy Community. Along with a number of the staff and parent volunteers much

work has been done to prepare for this production. Be sure to purchase your tickets for Thursday or Friday

corporate sponsorship to keep the program alive. If you know of any potential sponsors and /or you would like

MDPS Community Footy Tipping Competition

True to my word (rare when we are talking about football tipping) I managed to win the MDPS Community

Comp and the $100 Kmart voucher which I will use to purchase books for Mt Dandy. Close behind me were

the Thornton and Gailis families who received a $50 and $20 Kmart voucher respectively.

AusVELS Curriculum

Recently Sue and I attended a briefing for school leaders to explain how Victoria’s state school curriculum will

change next year to incorporate National standards (AusVELS). AusVELS is the Foundation (Prep) to Year 10

Curriculum for Victorian government and Catholic schools for implementation from 2013. AusVELS outlines

what is essential for all Victorian students (up to year 10) to learn and includes the Australian Curriculum

F-10 for English, Mathematics, History and Science. It provides a single, coherent and comprehensive set of com-

mon achievement standards which Mount Dandenong Primary School will use to plan learning programs for our

students, assess their progress and report this improvement to parents.

Curriculum in the four subject areas mentioned above is now ready for implementation. States other than Victo-

ria have started with the implementation process already, as their existing state based curriculum was generally

out of date. In other words, Victoria’s schools have the least amount of work to do in meeting the new National

standards, as the curriculum taught presently in state schools is already considered to be world class and way

ahead of the other states and territories. Agreement has been reached by collective State and Territory Educa-

tion Ministers that all students across Australia must learn the four areas above, as their ‘democratic right’. This

will be the first time in our nation’s history that every child is learning about and working towards the same

standards.

Drink Bottles and Hats

With the warmer weather coming on, now is a good time to remind students and parents about drink bottles. In

order for our brains to function at their best, hydration is essential. At MtDandy PS we encourage students to

have a drink bottle on their table and of course, we have many fountains to drink from when outside. We all

know that dehydration leads to fatigue, headaches and other physically draining symptoms that interfere with

learning. In order for each child to give themselves the best chance at a productive day, drinking plenty of water

is the healthy and sensible solution.

From the start of Term 4 all students are required to wear school approved broad brimmed or bucket hat at

recess and lunchtime. It is part of our Sun Smart program and those not wearing school approved hats will need

to play in the undercover area near the junior playground.

Book Fair 2012

This year’s Book Fair was a resounding success. It was extremely popular, with our community purchasing many books with over $3000

worth of books and stationary sold. This means that Mt Dandy will receive over $1000 worth of books for our Reading Café program. It is a

great result and a magnificent way to celebrate our Literacy and Numeracy Week celebrations.

Michael Salmon Author Visit

Michael Salmon the author and illustrator of many children’s books visited Mt Dandy last week and presented to our Grade Prep to 4 stu-

dents. He was highly entertaining and motivating. His illustrations of 2 of our students were a hit with the kids. He also took the time to

personally sign a bookmark for every student. It was a wonderful opportunity for our students to interact with a ‘real’ author and be in-

spired to enjoy literature even more.

Visit to Grade 1/2PW

Last week I had the great joy of watching the Grade 1/2PW students present their Dinosaur projects to the class. I was overjoyed to see

the in-depth research that had taken place, the high level of engagement and the very successful and supportive team work that each of the

groups displayed. The students were in mixed ability groups and each student played an important role in their projects. Well done to the

1/2PW team.

OSHC invoices will be late

Unfortunately there is currently a glitch in our OSHC system that we are trying to rectify as quickly as possible. This means that invoices

will be issued as soon as it is fixed. We apologise for any inconvenience.

Thumbs up to:

Mahni and Charli L for both passing their Jazz and Tap exams. Both girls have worked extremely hard at this

Hunter Greenall for his effort to win the Best and Fairest for his football team

Cheryl Sinclair and Lena Stewart for helping with the book fair

Kai L, Max P and Jasper H for winning the Staff Story Books Challenge

Thank you, Michael Leonard and Sue Gibson.

BUNNINGS SAUSAGE SIZZLE Friday 28th September

Dear All, We are hoping to raise $1200 at the Bunning sausage sizzle this year. Unfortunately we are on the Friday because there are so

many organisations wanting a weekend time slot that Bunnings Bayswater now has a policy that if you had a weekend last year, you won’t be

offered one the next.

Money raised will be spent on updating the books in each of the classrooms as part of the Reading Cafe initiative.

We are hoping that there will be 13 people available to assist us on the roster this year please.

To secure your preferred station and time slot please email me on [email protected] or text on 0439 55 33 71.

If you are not available to help on the day perhaps you are able to donate any of the following items: paper napkins, foil trays, disposable

gloves, tomato sauce, mustard, soft drinks (coke, coke zero, lemonade) or bottled water.

Many thanks for your assistance,

The Fundraising Committee
