YOUTH MINISTRY Theology on Tap – Tuesday, Dec 3. Every first Tuesday of the month, 6:30 pm at Pints & Union (114 E Market Street, New Albany, IN 47150. Relevant speakers for Young Adults on Catholic faith & culture. Sponsored by Catalyst Catholic. ABIDE – Tuesday, Dec 17. Every third Tuesday all ages and families gather in Mount St. Francis’ Chapel for personal prayer, reflective music, Eucharistic Adoration and, for those interested, the Sacrament of Penance & Reconciliation (Confession). No registration required. Stay a few minutes or the entire time. Event begins 6:30 pm and ends at 8:30 pm. THE MUSIC OF ADVENT When you think about Advent Music, what come to mind? “O Come, O Come Emmanuel” or maybe “The King of Glory” are probably the first to pop into your head. While other churches begin singing Christmas carols and decorating with poinsettias well before Christmas, the Catholic Church has a treasure trove of hymns and carols that direct our minds and hearts to preparing for the second coming of Christ as we approach the commemoration of his earthly birth on Christmas Day . “O Come, O Come Emmanuel” (# 395) uses the text from the “O Antiphons”, a series of short phrases from the Magnificat during Vespers between December 17 and 24 dating from Medieval times. Each verse, beginning with the word “O”, gives the coming Messiah a title taken from the Old Testament. The chant-like music dates from the 13th century. St. Ambrose (340-397 AD) wrote “Savior of the Nations, Come” (#421). It is probably the oldest Advent hymn still in common use. “Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence” (# 619) dates from St. Ambrose’s time, but was used by the Syriac Churches and Orthodox rites. “On Jordan’s Bank” (#418) dates from the sixth century. Some sources say that Ambrose also wrote “Creator of the Stars of Night” (# 420). All of these Advent hymns have passed down to us through many centuries in their original forms. This Advent, we will be learning some simple refrains from more contemporary songs. You can look forward to singing “Gift of God” (# 422) by Marty Haugen and “Advent Gathering Song” (# 405) by James Chepponis. Many people wonder why we do not sing Christmas carols during Advent. The Church has always maintained the contemplative nature of patient waiting and preparation, watching for the Lord’s return—a welcome respite from the commercial hustle and bustle of the season. ►Liturgical Year-December dedicated to the Immaculate Conception and the Divine Infancy – December is an extraordinary month filled with many liturgical feast days including the Advent and Christmas seasons. On December 8th we recall the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary who was conceived without original sin. December is a time one can reflect on the virtues of purity, fidelity and hope. ►Communion of Saints & Feasts Nov 30 – St Andrew the Apostle Dec 3 – St Francis Xavier Dec 4 – St John of Damascus Dec 6 – St Nicholas (of Bari and Myra) & First Friday Devotion to Sacred Heart of Jesus Dec 7 – First Saturday Devotion to Immaculate Heart of Mary Dec 8 – The Immaculate Conception

Novena to St. Andrew the Apostle St. Andrew Christmas Novena, also known as the Christmas Anticipation Novena, marks a wonderful way to enter into the Advent season in anticipation, penance, and prayer. The origins of this prayer are unknown but possibly from Ireland and can be traced to be (at least) over 100 years old. Prayers can be prayed several different ways one way being to pray for nine days beginning on the feast day of St. Andrew (Nov. 30) and ending on Dec. 8 the Immaculate Conception feast day. Traditionally, this Christmas Novena is prayer every day during the Advent season beginning of St. Andrew’s feast day and ending on Dec. 25 on the feast of Christmas Day. Either length the novena prayer is prayed 15 times each day. What a beautiful way to focus our hearts and minds on Jesus - The reason for the season! More about the novena on this link: http://thepracticingcatholic.com/2011/11/30/saint-andrew-christmas-novena/

St. Andrew’s Christmas Anticipation Prayer Hail and blessed be the hour and moment in which the Son of God was born. Of the most pure Virgin Mary, at midnight, in Bethlehem, in piercing cold. In that hour vouchsafe, I beseech Thee, O my God, to hear my prayer and grant my desires through the merits of Our Savior Jesus Christ, and of His blessed Mother. Amen.

►Advent Prayer Buddy – We begin! All ages invited to participate in praying for others, by name during the Advent & Christmas seasons. Advent “Prayer Container/Bowl” in St. Joseph’s narthex. Place your name (or your family’s name) into bowl AND DRAW ANOTHER NAME OUT to pray daily for that person/family. Prayer Bowl will be available thru weekend of Dec., 15 & 16th.

What a beautiful, lasting gift to give to others-your heartfelt prayers!

Dear Parishioners,

Happy Advent! How joyful is this four week

season devoted to preparation for the coming

of Christ at Christmas! In this year of the

Gospel of Matthew (Year A), our Advent Sunday

Gospel readings will especially feature John

the Baptist. Check out what the Catechism of

the Catholic Church has to say about Advent

and the special role of Saint John:

The coming of God’s Son to earth is an event of

such immensity that God willed to prepare for

it over centuries. He makes everything

converge on Christ: all the rituals and

sacrifices, figures and symbols of the “First

Covenant.” He announces him through the

mouths of the prophets who succeeded one

another in Israel. Moreover, he awakens in

the hearts of the pagans a dim expectation of

this coming.

St. John the Baptist is the Lord’s immediate

precursor or forerunner, sent to prepare his

way. “Prophet of the Most High,” John surpasses

all the prophets, of whom he is the last. He

inaugurates the Gospel, already from his

mother’s womb welcomes the coming of Christ,

and rejoices in being “the friend of the

bridegroom,” whom he points out as “the Lamb

of God, who takes away the sin of the world.”

Going before Jesus “in the spirit and power of

Elijah,” John bears witness to Christ in his

preaching, by his Baptism of conversion, and

through his martyrdom.

When the Church celebrates the liturgy of

Advent each year, she makes present this

ancient expectancy of the Messiah, for by

sharing in the long preparation for the

Savior’s first coming, the faithful renew their

ardent desire for his second coming. By

celebrating the precursor’s birth and

martyrdom, the Church unites herself to his

desire: “He must increase, but I must

decrease.”

Peace, Fr. Kyle
