Sometimes things happen for a reason. When delivery of a 2015 Mustang GT press car was postponed, we found ourselves scrambling for a replacement for this month’s cover photo with

a 1965 GT to represent 50 years of Mustang GTs. Then Chris Phillips with Dream Giveaway, in nearby Clearwater, Florida, called to see if we’d like to drive over to inspect this year’s Dream Giveaway Mustangs.

“A 1965 GT fastback and a 2015 GT coupe,” was Chris’ reply to our query about years and models.

Bingo!Even better, both cars are special. The vintage Mustang is

a factory K-code, 5F09K713922, with the coveted 289 High Performance engine. The new Mustang is one of 1,964 50th Anniversary Editions, car number 586. It doesn’t get much better than that.

Since 2010 when Robert Totten won a 1967 Shelby GT500 and 2010 Patriot Edition Shelby GT500, Dream Giveaway has been raising money for various charities with their “Win the Mustangs” sweepstakes. For this year’s prizes, DG Group CEO Mark Breiner recognized the desirability of the 50th Anniversary Edition model and went through normal dealership channels to get one for the giveaway. Once a white anniversary car was secured, Mark went to his usual sources—“birddogs,” he calls them—to track down a matching 1965 Mustang. When he found the white 1965 K-GT fastback in Wisconsin, he knew he had put together a perfect pair.

You’ve probably noticed the non-factory details on the 2015. To add vintage touches, DG Group replaced the stock tires with a set of Pirelli PZeros with red sidewalls, similar to the dual red-line tires on the vintage GT. They’re mounted on the 50th Edition’s unique 19-inch 10-spokes, which resemble the 1965’s styled steel wheels. The winner of the car will also get the original tires. Other touches include rocker panel stripes (actually from reproduction kits for 1965-66 GT Mustangs), red hubcap inserts, and red detailing for the hood vent inserts and faux gas cap.

Less noticeable is the update for the 1965 GT’s interior. Originally equipped with the red Pony interior, the color was changed to black with white inserts to complement the special 50th Anniversary Edition interior. The red upholstery that was replaced will go to the sweepstakes winner. DG Group also took care of some minor mechanical issues, like replacing the 4-speed’s clutch and installing an original shifter in place of the Hurst unit that was in the car. I had the opportunity to drive the K-code GT around the block and can say that it’s a very nice, good running K-GT. There’s nothing like the sound of solid lifters and trumpet exhaust.

The Mustang Dream Giveaway sweepstakes kicks off next month. See their ad in this issue for more details. MT
