    CONFESSION -- ITS ORIGIN AND HISTORY

    o come to England,Wesley provided for spiritual discipline thruthe class-meeting,whoseleader has to advise,

    comfort or exhort as occasion mayarise, and thru the ministers,who have to bear the chief responsibility in the reproof, suspension or expulsion from communionof erring brethren. In the Salvation Army people are continuallyinvited to come forward to the"penitent form", and admissions ofpast evil living are publiclyma'de. Among the Calvinistic bodiesin the British Isles and abroad,discipline has been a stern real

    ity; but in none of them isthere either private confession orpriestly absolution of a formalkind.

    The Church of England holdsas usual a central position. Themethod generally adopted is one ofgeneral confession to God in theface of the Church, to be in secret used by each member of thecongregation for the confessionof his own particular sins, and tobe followed by public absolution.

    But three other methodsof confession for private use are mentioned in one of the exhortationsin the communion service. First,all men are urged to practice secret confession to God alone, andin it the sins are to be acknowledged in detail. Secondly, wherethe_nature of the offence  admitsof it,the sinner is to acknowledge

    his wrong-doing to the neighbowhom he has aggrieved. And,thirdlythe sinner who cannot satisfy hconscience by these methods iinvited to open his grief to

    minister of God’s word. Similarlythe sick man is to be moved make a special confession of hsins if he feels his conscienctroubled with any weighty matterThe priest is bound, under tmost stringent qualities, never tdivulge what he has thus learned.

    Extreme views are held othis question of confession; somoppose auricular confession as thcitadel of sacerdotal authoritand as a peril to morals, whil

    others speak as if it were a necesary element in every Christialife, and hold that post-baptismasin of a grave sort can receivforgiveness in no other way.

    Confession to the Occultisis important,and he gives it closattention. He does not, howevertake his confessions to a friennor a priest,unless he particulaly wishes to do so. Rather, he hahis own higher self as a judge-an

    priest. He analyzes himself, seeboth his sins of omission, anof commission,and his higher selfbids him what to do to right thwrong. It may be but a matter ocorrecting a fault; it may be matter of making right a real wrongbut in either instance, he knowthe Divine Self as his guide.

    nspiringly representative of the ChristmasSeason,is the cover of

    the Messenger for thismonth. It is a picturewhich carries the warmth of cheerto each heart,and which,to the Occultist, brings much more.

    First, of course, the centralfigure -- could anything more completely typify the heart within?Could anything bring a more fulsomerepresentation of ourselves, as wecommence upon the Path? The Babe isforever the symbol of new life, ofa new message, of a beginning.

    The Birth brings to us a symbol replete with the meaning of Initiation, for Initiation does notmean a culmination of all things,but the beginning of all things.The Babe,therefore,is not onlythe Master Jesus,at the beginning of His physicalincarnation,but ourselves,as we take the first stepinto a new cycle of development .

    About His Head thereis the nimbus,the artist'srepresentation of the HolyAura, which is about the headof Mary as well, for in givingbirth to the Saviour, Mary becamehallowed.

    In Mary we have the symbol ofthe Mother Aspect of the Trinity.How the heart of Mary must haveswelled with happiness and pride,as the wise men came to kneel before the new-born Babe and to bring

    Him their precious gifts.That there were three wise men,

    is not an accident — There wereneither two nor four. Three, stillbringing out the Trinitarian Principle. The gifts which they bear,are not valued because of theirmaterial price, but because theysymbolize to us the gifts whichwere brought to us thru the MasterJesus.Those wise men knew and rec

    ognized the Being which had come toHumanity,to bring it a higher message, and they added their rejoic

    ing to the voices of the Angels whohovered near, and sang to thosegathered about,that all might partake in the upliftmentof the DivineForce which was centered about thehumble birth-place.

    In all the representations ofthe Birth we find much evidence' UfLight - Light, which is to man thesymbol of upliftment,of inspiration,of revelation,of all that effort anddetermination will reveal to him.

    And so I bring you this Christ

    mas,the Message of the Divine Birth,that this Birth may come to you individually and collectively. That

    it maybe not only an outer belief,but that it may be also an

    actuality, that it may takeplace within you;may you perceive the awakening of theInner, Higher Self, feelthe first faint stirringsof your Divine Sonship.This is your first Initiation, this first awakening

    to the potentialities withinyourself. So attune yourself

    with the Divine Message of thisSeason,that it becomes a living,

    breathing thing within you.Let the Radiance of the Birth

    of the Divine Babe bring to you thelustrous awakening, let be bornwithin you, as upon that Day longago, the Babe was born, the knowledge of the Divine within yourself,that it may shine with never-ceas

    ing Light and radiance.

    rent magazines and proceeds with

    documentary evidence to prove hispoint. The question is a large one,one that cannot be dealt with in afew sentences or paragraphs. Fromthe writers’ view point,I shall haveto agree, but from the Occultists'point of view,he has merely senseda changing order of orthodoxy.

    The ultimate of authority inour world, whether it be in thisor in future generations, is notgoing to be an inflexible rule whichhas been established.God is a pro

    gressive God and those who followby inspiration,intuition or logic,will progress with Him. The interpretation of God which to us was allimportant yesterday may be lookedupon today as a stepping stone toour present understanding and thevery principles upon which we basedour conclusions yesterday, haveserved their purpose to give us theversion of truth which we hold today.

    So it is without fear of successful contradiction that I conclude here before stating my case,"God,in our modern world,is becoming progressively more essential."

    We are bordering the greatestscientific age the world has everknown; no,we are not in it,man hasnot learned to do the many thingshe has made machinery to do.Witnessthe sending of voice around the worldin a fraction of a second. Man hasby concentration attuned himselfwith "Nature’s finer forces"and thru

    the medium of an understandableforce,a force that is only partially understood,created for his benefit ,apparatus that will magnify thehuman voice,transmit it a thousandmiles or more to a receiving set,to carry on a conversation that afew years ago was only possiblewithin the range of a few feet.

    Concentration,in reality,cosecration to an ideal, is resposible for the many inventions thhave contributed to man’s pleasuin living. These inventions hanot come in their ultimate perfetion, neither can we say that ainvention now in existence is a state of perfection. We probabthought our ’36 models were nearly perfect as they could made,but now that we have used thfor nearly a year,we have discoverweaknesses, some of which will overcome in our’37 models.

    There is a source of informtion, not a tangible source, course,but one that remains as myterious as the thought forms thcome from it. It is to this sourwe are indebted for every iota information that has in any whelped us in our approach to the utimate. Only the egoist feels asufficient within himself,and he

    at loss to explain the life force a grain of mustard seed;thus admiting his very limited wisdom.

    That this source is accessibto all who seek it in the way prscribed by law, is a foregone conclsion; otherwise men would rejoice their ignorance and depend on tgods for their everything,giving heed to progress or advancement

    student asks --   "Ihave always understoodthat God is loving,andjust, yet I have beentold that forgiveness

    is impossible. Why is this true?”First of all,this student hasbeen misinformed,for we are forgiven our sins. Not, however, as isgenerally understood in the Orthodox sense. A sin is in the firstplace, a mistake, and in additionto forgiving that sin, it must bewiped out or redeemed.

    We make the mistake,we see itsresults,and we are sorry. We go toGod with prayer,and ask to be forgiven. We are, if we are sincerely

    sorry for the error,but there stillremains the karma of that particular act.We have set certain forcesinto motion, and they must react,for once set into motion, there isnothing we can do to stop them.

    That does not mean, however,that the results of that act mustcome in their full power. We cancertainly lessen them,andmake themless severe.

    "As we sow,so shall we reap",is a law which is immutable and un

    changeable. If we burn our hand, weare sorry,and are careful thereafter not to do it again. Nevertheless, we can plead forgiveness forthat sin endlessly,without riddingourselves of the burn. It must behealed, and no matter what methodof healing we use upon it, it isstill the overcoming or working outof the effect of the act.

    Suppose we say,then, that instead of God forgivingus our sins,

    as the term is usually understood,that He overlooks our errors, andin His Divine Love,leads us gentlyin the right direction.We may suffer,but thru that suffering,we areburning out the dross of our souls,and turning it to pure gold.

    Thru making mistakes, manlearns,thru learning he grows,and ashe grows,he evolves to the perfectbeing as which he was designed.

    ago, a message at Christmas, whichall of you will enjoy.We are quot

    ing from his letter — "Do you recall the little article entitled "The Search for God"by an unknown writer? ’When I wasyoung and before I awoke to my Heritage, I travelled thru many worldsin search of God, and from everySoul that I met I asked where Hemight be found and from each personreceived a different answer. Onespoke of the inf ini ty of the heavens,another measured His glory by theworlds which lie beyond -- numbers

    spoke of Him in the words of thosewho are now elsewhere, and thewords of the sacred creeds. To notwo souls was the likeness the same,and to none had His countenancebeen unveiled. So I wandered evenfarther,--I walked in the Paths ofSilence— Then I returned to life—this is a large world, it must beseen in a large way.So learn to singwith the larks, and be silent withthe Astronomers, that you may beready for the hour when the gentlebreath of the awakening will blowthe mist from your eyes.1

    It is this kind of understanding, and this kind of spiritualitythat you will find inculcated in allthat comes to you from the WesternTraditions. As I write these wordsto you,the spirit of Christmas warmsour hearts,for this is the Natal Dayof the great Initiate, that Masterwhose Name is unrevealed to Humanity,for it is the Name of Power,but

    whom the people know as Jesus, andin this season,working in His cause,as you softly speak His Name, youwill feel the joyous response, youwill behold as in a Vision yourselflifted into joyous response, youwill behold as in a Vision yourselflifted into the Light of His Presence; Peace as a garment, will enfold you; Love will control, andSpirit will illuminate you;you will

    feel the Omnipresence of the ChristForce as it flows in Purity thruthe Consciousness of the Masterof the Highest Plane. During thisseason there should not be a darkened corner anywhere, for everysoul that turns to Him will be

    blessed by His Presence, and arealization of the All-Power whichis in His Name.We will rejoice withyou when the fullness of the Infinite Power of the Master is revealedto you, and receive His blessings.And then as you turn again to theNew Year,I want you to start with aresolution to keep every day a GoodDay, or more correctly speaking,perhaps,to allow every day to be aGood Day. Every day is a Good Dayto begirf with, but sometimes we

    choose to mar its perfect pattern,and then it is our fault,not God’sif, when nightfall arrives, we bowour head in grief over our experiment. Each day we are entering upona day’s perfection,and thus at thebeginning of the year I want youto pause for a moment and think withSt. Paul, "Whatsoever things aretrue, honorable,just, pure,lovely,of good report, think on thesethings."

    (This has, of necessity, beenshortened, for it is but excerptsof the letter,here and there.Nevertheless,it brings out the thought,one which is just as applicable atthis Christmas, as it was upon theday Sri Dayananda first wrote it.)

    his was in the localnewspaper. A man hadbeen shooting pigeonsthat were making a parking place of his roof.

    He left a loaded shotgun in a corner behind a door.

    His three-year-old daughterwas playing with a small neighborof the opposite sex. With the natural curiosity of the male regarding weapons, the little boy wantedto see the gun that worked suchdesirable slaughter among the pigeons .

    Finally the girl brought outthe shotgun and tried to explainits mysteries. She pulled the trigger.The boy fell,instantly killed.

    Much ado was made of this bycertain people who should have knownbetter. Some thought the childshould be prosecuted to teach hera lesson.

    The district attorney broughther to his office for questioning.He wanted to know if she fired thegun in anger, and if she intendedto kill her little friend.The evening paper carried a picture thatconveyed a heart-throb; a pictureof the child after the ordeal, as

    leep with a thumb in her mouth.Authorities decided that the

    killing was accidental,and the baby was not held responsible. Thatwas wisdom, but those interestedmight have looked further.

    How about the father who provided a deadly weapon for a childthat was too young to use it intelligently?

    A woman told me this one fromher own experience. She became interested in an organization thattaught mind science and the powerthat lies in affirmations.A forceful, dynamic man headed the group.He made strong, emotional appealsto his followers.

    "You can have what you want,"he told them. "This great power

    STORIEScan be stirred into action if yoaffirm steadily, persistently anwith unbounded faith. Pick out ththing you want. Then use affirmations to bring it to you."

    "Well,'1 the woman thoughtMthat is fine if true. I will trit.11

    She decided that she wantea thousand dollars. She affirmefaithfully, powerfully, day afteday, week after week. She determined to "demonstrate" a thousandollars or die in the attempt.

    One day she was repeating thaffirmation as she crossed a streetShe awakened in a hospital,swathefrom head to foot in bandages anplaster casts. While crossing th

    street she had been run down by aautomobile.The driver of the car was sor

    ry. He was not wealthy, but hpaid all expenses and gave the woman a thousand dollars. Maimedcrippled and in pain, she had thmoney she desired.     JUST A THOUGHTecently,I attended theannual bridge tea,whichwas given for the benefit of the Home for theAged, at which there

    were several hundred guests,many of

    whom,were socially prominent citizens. Acting in the capacity of oneofmany hostesses,I naturally overheard bits of conversation amongthe groups of players, as I passed ythe tables.One of which, "0 yes,he(mentioning the name of a certainwealthy patron), donated quite anamount. He is always so generous."

    GENEROSITY - its real meaning IDoes it imply only the giving of material things? This planted into myconsciousness, a tiny seed for the

    following thought. There are manyavenues through which one may express generosity. In all of God'smanifestations --a generous prayerof praise to Him - our Supreme andAbsolute One I To our Master Jesus -To our Holy Unseen Ones, withoutWhom we are as nothing. A generousprayer of thanksgiving to our MightyArchangels for their ever watchfulprotection. A generous blessing ofsincere gratitude, for our everwilling Instructors in the Brotherhood, thru whom we are afforded suchdivine inspiration.

    A generous prayer of compassion for the afflicted bodies— theunfortunate criminal --the saddened hearts. A generous prayer forGod’s Grace and Blessings to touchevery soul in His vast universe,including all kingdoms.

    A generous smile for all whomwe meet. To whom,or from whom service is in any way applied.A gentle

    pat and a morsel of food, for thelittle stray animal. A generousthought of appreciation for the songof the birds - God’s Heavenly Symphonies I Not excepting any of Hiswondrous beauties.

    We as Occultists,should zealously welcome every opportunitywhich the new day unfolds, to demonstrate the Teachings of the Master. With a greater desire within

    our hearts to distribute wisely,theknowledge, understanding and abundant love,which is constantly flowing into and through us - His Servers. "By their fruits ye shall knowthem." All of which is - real GENEROSITY of the soul.

    BAAL - (b& al) - A word in Hebrewsignifying I ord or Master.The rulerbearing this name was the chief divinity of the Phoenicians.Tn earlycivilizations it was used to denoteDivinity, and was identified withthe Sun God. Baal-gad was the Lordof the multitude of stars. Elijah,in 1st Kings, gives us the difference between Baal and Jehovah inthe familiar account of the idolatrous worship of a false goi.

    The principal seat of the Myteries was at Memphis,in the neigborhood of the Great Pyramid. Thwere of two kinds, the greater anthe lesser, the greater being tMysteries of Osiris and the lessebeing the Mysteries of Serapis, oIsis.

    The candidate was required texhibit proofs of a blameless lifeFor some days previous to the comencement of the ceremonies of iitiation,he abstained from all uchaste acts,confined himself to aexceedingly light diet, from whicanimal food was rigorously excludedand purified himself by repeateablutions.

    The candidate experienced thinitiation into the lesser mysteriefirst,and these initiations taughthe physics] laws of nature,the neessity for moral purification,et

    The second degree, or initiation into the greater mysteriesbrought the lesson of' death andresurrection.

    EGYPTIAN PRIESTS - (prests) - Highest in authority in all Egypt, thePriests led not only the religious

    activities, but governmental affairs as well.

    They conferred the initiationsof the Mysteries, of which therewere two divisions, the lesser andthe greater. There were, in all,seven steps or grades; (l) Pasta-phorus, instruction in physicalsciences; (2) Neocorus, instruction in geometry and architecture;(3) Melanophoros, instruction inthe symbolical death of Osiris,andin the hieroglyphical language;(4)Kistophoros, becomes a judge andis presented with a Book of the Lawsof Egypt; (5) Balahate,instructionin chemistry; (6) Astronomos, instructed in astronomy and the mathematical sciences; (7) Propheta ,instructed in detail regarding theMysteries, was presented with across, which he must carry withhim at all times,a white mantle anda square headdress.

    JAINISM - (jin'izm) - The Hindu religion which gives obeisance tothe Jinas, gods which are supposedto be superior to the Hindu Gods,thus resembling Buddhism.Like Buddhism also,the Vedas are not used.In this sect respect and venerationfor animals is very great, and thepriests will go to very great lengthsto keep from harming anything withlife. They walk, sweeping the waybefore them with a broom,that theymay not step on an insect.

    Some portions of this sect assert that woman cannot gain salvation,while others include women intheir religion, and promise themsalvation.

    ANNULAR THEORY - (an'u ler the'3ri) - A theory of the creationwhich supposes that the earth wasa gaseous mass which gradually sol

    idified. In this process,there was'left suspended above it, numerouswater rings. These later fell tothe earth,and it became as we knowit today.

    ARISTOTLE - (ar;Is totl) - Philosopher (384-5^2 B.C.) He was the

    most comprehensive and systematicof all ancient thinkers, and thruthe perpetuation of his doctrinesin medieval philosophy, has exercised greater influence upon West7ern thought than any other singlephilosopher.

    ARK OF THE COVENANT - (kuv'e nent)-The Ark of the Covenant or of theTestimony was a chest originallyconstructed by Moses at the commandof God, in which were kept the twotables of stone, on which were engraved the Ten Commandments. Italso contained a golden pot filledwith manna,the tables of the Covenant, and Aaron’s rod. First itwas placed in the most sacred placein the Temple, and was lost whenthat building was destroyed. Thelater history of that ark is therefore, in obscurity. It was mostbeautifully wrought, exact in detail to the instructions given to

    Moses by God.

    BLUE - (bloo) - Esoterically, thesymbol of universal friendship andbenevolence. The ancient Hebrewpeople were instructed to wearblue; it was the color of one ofthe veils in the Tabernacle, andwas also used about the robes ofthe priests.

    Among the Druids, blue wasthe symbol of truth. The Egyptiansheld it to be a sacred color; the

    Babylonians used it for the robesof their deities and idols. To theChinese it was sacred,and the Hindus state that Vishnu was repre -sented a celestial blue.

    Among the medieval Christians,blue was considered an emblem ofimmortality, and it has come, generally, to symbolize perfection'and good.
