PRESIDENT’S PRATTLE My how the years have flown, June 2016 will be the commencement of the 10
th year of our
club.
It takes more than a committee and the various “Interest Group” leaders to make a great
club, which we are, but also the participation of all members in the different groups and
excursions which are organised for your enjoyment. So please participate is as many as you
are able, remember the saying, “you only get out of something, whatever you put in” thus
you are the one in control of your life.
I look forward to my year as your president and working with your committee to continue as the great
association of friends that we have become. Remember the slogan for “Probus” is “FUN, FELLOWSHIP
& FRIENDSHIP” and the only person who can make this happen is “YOU”
One final note about your membership fees, they have to be paid prior to the commencement of our April
meeting to ensure the continuity of your membership.

FROM OUR ROVING REPORTERS
MARG’S NORF’K GROUP finale DAYS 5 & 7 – Ask pretty much anyone on Norfolk Island, and they can show you where they will be buried (no
crematorium on Norf’k).Kingston’s pretty ocean view graveyard is divided into family groups and the groundkeeper
always leaves room for people (population about 1,800) to be buried near their loved ones (everybody gets a State
Funeral and the flags fly at half-mast). The cemetery’s more recent section has headstones with surnames such as
Christian, Quintal and Adams, the Bounty Mutineers while the older graves closer to the beach depict murder and
mayhem from the brutal convict days. Outside the fence on un-consecrated ground lies Murderer’s Mound where 13
convicts executed in 1846 for their part in the murder of three soldiers and Stephen Smith the gaol cook during the
Cooking Pot Rebellion, are buried in a disused sawpit site. It is no wonder that ghosts abound in this mystical island
and many visitors seek to capture at night elusive globes and hovering balls of light, believed to be spirits of the
dead, with their cameras.
However there was nothing spiritual about the gorgeous young traditional island dancers (you may remember them
from the School’s Spectacular 2013) who entertained us on a magnificent cliff top overlooking the ruggedly
beautiful Anson Bay as we dined on fresh local fish and dishes inspired by Norfolk’s fascinating heritage and
seasonal produce, followed by cleansing wines and ales as we absorbed another breathtaking Norfolk Island sunset
for the last time.
We (minus Marg) did a quick whip
around on our last day on Norfolk and
presented Marg with heaps of bottles
of liqueurs and goodies as a “Thank
You” for mothering us on our terrific
holiday, and she in return presented
each of us with a small gift for.
……not sure why……..maybe not
getting lost?

Shen Yun Ten years ago, leading Chinese artists from around the world came together to
revive authentic Chinese culture. They formed Shen Yun whose artists now
present these magnificent cultural traditions on stage. Twenty members from
our club attended this amazing show which featured fantastic costumes,
dancers and technical effects. Ken
A Week Away in Wagga Wagga
(The city so good they named it twice!)
Day 1 - Monday 7
th March
After negotiating the peak hour traffic in the shuttles, Keith, our favourite Coach Captain had us relaxed and rolling
down the Hume Freeway to our first of many well catered tea breaks.
At Gundagai we took the scenic route beside the Murrumbidgee River to the rustic Wagga Wagga Winery. Owners
Ros & Ian Fitzpatrick supplied a welcomed
lunch and wine tasting with the impressive
mural of a wine storage area as a backdrop.
It was also an opportunity to sing happy birthday
to Robert Keyworth.
Arriving at Wagga we picked up our city guides
Matt & his understudy Heather. It was quickly
evident that Matt is extremely proud &
knowledgeable of his home town and rightly so.
After an extensive 90 minute tour we booked
into the Garden City Motor Inn and hit the pool
as it was 38c.
Our hosts for the next 4 days Carmella & John
welcomed us and after we visited the bar served
our first dinner which was very enjoyable.

Day 2 – Tuesday 8th March
The day began with a visit to Mates Gully farm where we were treated to a delicious morning tea as well
as samples of fresh produce, followed by a tour of the orchard and organic vegetable plot. Lunch was at the
Mates Gully restaurant and we were impressed with the quality of the delicious meals which were prepared
using produce straight from the farm. Today was a wonderful farm to plate experience.
A visit to the Wagga Wagga Art Gallery completed the afternoon and we found the glass pieces on display
to be absolutely magnificent.

Wednesday already and we have seen so much. Today we head for the high country and Tumbarumba. Our first stop
was Boggy Creek sheep and cattle station where we were entertained by Tim and his beautiful horses. It was great to
see how well trained these animals are and what hard work must go into their training. Tim also has 5 kelpie dogs,
one of which has just come back from maternity leave. Two of her puppies joined the show and it was amazing to
see that one has, already, at 6 weeks old, the instinct to herd sheep. These dogs are so well trained and are an
enormous help to the farmer. One, Ossie, is so naughty but I think that Tim has trained him to be the comedy act in
the show. He had us all laughing at his antics. After morning tea we were treated to a shearing display. Altogether
an enjoyable visit. The staff were very organised and professional, facilities were great. Drop in if you are in the
area.
Lunch was provided by the volunteers at the Women’s Pioneer Hut and Museum. Delicious sandwiches, slices and a
welcome cuppa. The Museum is lovely and very interesting. Their craft shop has some lovely things at very
reasonable prices which is part of their fund raising efforts. It’s good to see the women’s role in settling this country
being acknowledged
Clarice.
Entertainment at the Motel: Wednesday evening
We experienced some of the local Wagga Wagga culture on Wednesday night with Annette on the ivory keys of a
worn out pianola and Barry accompanying her on the Mandela and bass guitar. After overcoming the sticking notes
of the keyboard our pianist got into the swing of things and played some old time music for new member John
Hough to lead us in singing. Our pianist then found us some music we were all familiar with, Sue found technology
useful in finding long forgotten words to songs and a very merry band of singers sang, marched and danced the night
away. Kathy
Day 4 – Thursday 10th March
Wagga Botanic Gardens
Former Bulldogs halfback Steve Mortimer was nicknamed “Turvey” after Turvey Park in Wagga. The Wagga
Botanic Gardens are located in Turvey Park so it seemed appropriate that our Probus Club team would form a huge,
unruly scrum on their kid’s adventure playground. Coach Ros barked out positional instructions to us as David
recorded the manoeuvres for our traditional team photo. Meanwhile Anna had tackled an unsuspecting local Jogger
who told us the layout of the gardens however at this point Ralph was feeling a wee bit prickly so he and Jean
headed off to the cactus garden while Robert and Colette sought sanctuary at the café for a soothing latte. I followed
Sue our gardening guru who led me to a huge model railway system of tracks and buildings, but no trains or flowers.
Brenda, Kathy and Di checked out the zoo, stalked an unsuspecting albino peacock and Di plucked a few feathers
from his/her tail while Bob and Carol chatted with a group of friendly cockatoos at the walk in aviary. I suppose
there were plants and flowers at the gardens but suddenly it was time for a quick cuppa then we gotta go…..oh well
I’ll check out Wagga Gardens on Getaway when I get home.

Wagga Livestock Marketing Centre (LMC)
Established in 1979and leading the way in livestock sales for over 30 years LMC is the premier livestock selling
centre in Australia for marketing of cattle, sheep and lambs. With the added advantage of its Geographic location the
LMC attracts buyers from NSW and Victoria to participate in the sales which increases competition.
Our Probus Group was seated in the cattle auction arena for a chat with the
Centre Manager Paul who provided us
with a fascinating insight into the
process of livestock auctions. We were
amazed that the completed in and out
auction time for each lot of cattle on
auction day took only 30 seconds. If
only our Probus girls could clinch a
sale item deal with Rinehart’s Fashion
Store at Wagga in 30 seconds…..now
that would be gold. Ken

Monte Cristo: We arrived in the small township of Junee to visit Monte Cristo – “Australia’s most haunted
homestead.” Ironically, the guided tour did not make any mention of the resident ghosts. One has to do the evening
tour for that when, depending on your beliefs, you would (or wouldn’t) experience their presence. On our tour we
heard the chequered history of old two-storey house and its original attached homestead. Built around 1884 by
Christopher Crawley, the lord of his land, there were ultimately sibling disputes and after Mrs Crawley, the widow,
died in 1933, the house fell into disrepair. No-one would live there. It ultimately suffered from vandalism and
became an empty shell overlooking the town.
Then, in the 1960s, came Reg Ryan, the patriarch of the current family who owns the place. ‘Family’ is a relative
term as, according to our guide, they are as dysfunctional as the original Crawley family became in the end. Reg
completely restored and furnished the house to its present state. His elderly widow, Olive, still lives in the house but
is engaged in a bitter dispute with her children. Very sad. Monte Cristo needs a lot of repairs, white ant and dry rot
treatment not being the least of it. Reg died about 18 months ago and, having been sighted one night by his son’s
partner (who was our tour guide), is claimed as one of the local ghosts.
There was a moment of hilarity at one point when, as we stood on the lawn at the back of the old homestead, almost
on cue a black cat sprang from under a bush and raced through the legs of our group. Was that a sign?
It was a very interesting tour which ended in a delicious Devonshire tea in the events dining room. The scones, jam
and cream didn’t stand the ghost of a chance. Bob Bee
Our next place of interest was the Junee Liquorice & Chocolate Factory, the building is the old Junee flour mill
built in 1935, ground floor was renovated in 1998 to produce organic liquorice and chocolate.
Rhiannon escorted us to the viewing room, sitting in old vintage theatre chairs where we watched a DVD showing
how liquorice is made. We then moved over to the glass windows to watch how the Belgian style chocolates were
blended to coat all over the different types of liquorice.
Volunteers were called for to try their luck in the vertical liquorice bowling game, the ball was a large round piece of
liquorice that had to be thrown up high into a Shute, when it rolled down hitting the pins 2 team members, 1 on
either side, had to catch the pins before they hit the floor. Prizes were given to all contestants.
Lunch was served in the graze restaurant, freshly made fruit salad, sandwiches & coffee or tea was most enjoyable.
The rest of our time was spent looking at items to purchase in the ambience of the Lord St. store and the very
popular liquorice & chocolate shop where many items were carried onto the coach. We departed at 2pm leaving the
aroma of liquorice behind us a great place for our last stop.
The afternoon tea stop was just past Yass then back in the coach for our journey home,
Many thanks to Anna for a fabulous time your first tour certainly put you to the test, you showed great strength and
patience you passed with flying colours. I'm sure everyone enjoyed themselves and look forward to many more
tours with you.
A big thank you to everyone for being such good friends and fantastic company. Carol Warner
Homeward Bound – a small hiccup: We were on our way home. Books being read, nanny naps underway. The
gentle hum of our coach beneath us. Then at about 4pm and 30 km south of Goulburn, it was not so gentle a hum.
After pulling over and checking the engine at the rear, Keith made the announcement. “Houston, we have a
problem” - or words to that affect. It seems, after all these years of problem free trips, Keith’s coach finally spat the
dummy. A failed engine cooling fan. A spare stocking (if such a thing existed on the bus) would not do the trick.
Keith immediately rang Houston (his home base in Ingleburn) and arranged the immediate dispatch of a rescue
coach. In the meantime, we waited. To the credit of our members, everyone was understanding of the situation and
patient, waiting the 2 ½ hours in good humour, taking exercise strolls and checking out the local trees.
Fortunately Keith had been able to limp the coach to a proper truck rest bay so we were safely clear of the passing
traffic. The afternoon tea kit was broken out and we finished off the last of the biscuits and nibbles from the previous
pool-side party.
At around 7pm, the rescue coach, driven by Donna, arrived to cheers. Luggage was quickly transferred and we were
off again, leaving Keith to limp the injured coach home alone.
We finally arrived at the Catholic Club around 9pm – a tad later than originally planned – but still in good spirits,
though now tired and hungry. The transfer shuttles were waiting for us and soon groups headed off in three
directions.
And thus ended, more dramatically than expected, our wonderful holiday in Wagga Wagga. (Bob Bee)

Card Making – Marion Bee
In March we completed four cards. One was the same design as one made in
February and demonstrated how changing colours and papers can make a card look
very different. Our male card featured a die cut Holden ute in a neutral and black
colour combination. We will meet next on Tuesday 12th April by which time my
current thoughts will hopefully have crystallised into card kits.
