they hosted the county-wide Pre-K Olympics. West Nassau’sAFJROTC and Drum Corp led the parade of proud participantsaround for the many students who came to cheer them on. Thestudents participated in many challenges such as potato sackraces, tug-of-war, hurdles, tricycle races and more relaxingactivities like the sand table, face painting and even blowing bubbles. Mascot vs. MonarchPastor Ted Heglund, First Alliance Church, Hilliard
The story was reported in New Times and ESPN about aschool that over the years had had over 25 state championshipteams. This Ohio team had a Tiger as a mascot. Obie the Tigerwas said to be a key to all their wins. It took a tall student tohave the honor of wearing the real tiger skin suit.
Obie seems to know the right times to appear. If the team isbehind he would appear. The coach calls a time out and the tigerappears and stirs up the crowd to cheer for their team. The now
screaming enthusiastic crowd would give confidence to the team. The interesting part is that Obie’s performances were very
brief. He was used when the team was behind. He never really got involved beyondreigniting cries of confidence, giving a big boost of identity and stirring up some kindof passion so the team played harder. It really was not about him, but the fans and theteam. He yelled but it was the team who did the work.
Mascots are temporary enthusiasm for the activity of the moment. Mascots have nopower or authority. They are fun to watch and help to stir up enthusiasm.
A monarch is very different. A monarch is a king and ruler. A true monarch isobeyed by his subjects.
We have to be careful not to make Jesus into a mascot. Sure we know that Jesus isthe King of kings and the Lord of lords but do we live that way? It is often, not whatwe believe but in how we act. Think with me how we might use Jesus as a mascot ratherthan a monarch.
We trot Him out to cheer us up for the good things we are doing, just knowing thatHe would be happy. We also invite Him to reinforce the great things we want to do andpray “Lord, bless this that I am going to do, even though I never prayed if I should doit or not. “ Or we might call Jesus as our mascot to mask over sin because “I will notstop it but want Jesus to forgive me.” Also, we are so happy to be identified with Christuntil we are at work or when there is nobody around that knows you are a Christian.
When Jesus Christ is King of your life, you now serve a King that has all the powerand authority in heaven and on earth. It is not a chore but a privilege to seek His wisdomand guidance and then to obey His Word. Jesus is not a mascot who runs around tryingto encourage different people to do good and be enthused about life. Jesus, as theMonarch, has the power to encourage but also gives us His power so we can daily livefor Him.
Jesus did not come to this earth to be a mascot. As King of kings, Jesus came to Hissubjects to do what no one else could accomplish, die for His own people! As the Biblesays in 2 Corinthians 5:15 “And he died for all, that those who live should no longerlive for themselves but for him who died for them and was raised again.”
Just think, the King of kings not only died for you but rose from death and nowwants you to rely completely on Him. Jesus is not a mascot to make you laugh, amascot to drum up what is right or a mascot to make you look good, but is the monarchthat gives joy in hardship, the monarch that is truth and the monarch that works in andthrough you with power and authority.

Nassau County Special Olympicsattend State competition
Nassau County wasrepresented well as theathletes traveled to theSpecial Olympics StateGames at Disney’sWide World of Sports.The seven athleteswere: Linda Brown(Yulee) won Gold in the50 meter run, TommyCaperton (FB) took 4thin the 100 Meter run,Steve Ellis (Care Centers of Nassau) wonGold in the wheel chair slalom, KristopherMitchell (FB) competed in the shot put,Kerri Sheffield (Hilliard) won Gold in thePentathlon, Emma Venerdi (FB) won Goldin the softball throw and Mary Ann Wilson(Hilliard) took 4th in the 100 meter walk.Mary Ann Wilson, Emma Venerdi andCoach Lori Venerdi represented NassauCounty in the Parade of Athletes to openthe Games.
Marsha Wilson was Inspirational Coachof the year and Kerri Sheffield wasInspirational Athlete of the year. Note: The
Pentathlon is the mostdemanding event inSpecial OlympicsSummer Games.Athletes must masterthe 100 Meter dash,Running Long Jump,Shot Put, High Jumpand the 400 meter run.Kerri's award is welldeserved. She inspiresher fellow athletes and
everyone who watches her focus anddetermination while she competes. TheVictory Dance after closing ceremonieswas a big hit with the Athletes and Coachesalike.
The Opening Ceremonies werehighlighted by 70 Sheriffs motor cyclesand 50 patrol cars entering the darkenedbaseball stadium with their red and bluelights flashing. They were followed byrunners carrying the torch to the end of astate wide run. They lit the flaming caldronand the games were declared open.

Teacher Appreciation BreakfastOn Friday, June 11, at 8 a.m., The Greater Nassau County Chamber of Commerce
will hold the annual Teacher’s Appreciation Breakfast for Bryceville, Callahan, andHilliard schools, at West Nassau High School. BES Citizenship Award winners
Students from Bryceville Elementary traveled to the BrycevilleCommunity Club to enjoy dinner with club members and also receivetheir citizenship awards from the club. One student from each class ischosen every nine weeks to win the award. The students are given acertificate and a $2 dollar bill from the club.
Jacksonville Zoo visits HES
Students at Hilliard Elementary enjoyed Splash into Science Night recently. At the endof the event, students enjoyed a visit from the Jacksonville Zoo and some of their animals.Students enjoyed watching their Principal Kristi Simpkins and Assistant Principal TammySmith participate in holding a big snake. The trainer also brought a small alligator and anowl among other slimy animals for the students to learn more about.
