National Chair’s WelcomeCameron Scott 2017-2018
Hello NSMH’ers!
On behalf of the National Board, I would love to welcome you to our 29 th annual National Conference and Career Fair. Our National Conferences are always awaited with excitement after a long year of hard workand dedication to the organization.
NSMH is proud to be celebrating 29 years of excellence. Our theme this year is “Taking Charge ofChange: Evolving, Embracing & Innovating”. As an organization we strive to make sure that we are providing you all with the tools and information
necessary to stay up to date in our ever evolvingindustry.
Since its founding in the spring of 1989 at Cornell University, the National Society of Minorities inHospitality has been constantly evolving. From chair to chair each year, NSMH has taken charge ofchange by evolving with the times and demands of the hospitality industry. We evolve not to uproot our mission and vision, but so that we can continue to develop exceptional minority student talent and leadership. We have done this through creating new programs such as ChapterLeadership Ambassadors (CLA). Last year we created
the program and evolved it throughout this year to enhance some of the benefits of being a CLA. Since then the CLA had the opportunity to beprofessionally developed so they can be prepared to evolve into the future leaders of NSMH.
On top of all the evolutionary things NSMH is accomplishing we have been very focused on supporting our members through the adversity many have faced. From the hurricanes that affected chapters in the Southern Region to wildfires that spread through the West, it has been a rough year; chapters and individual members have faced many setbacks. However, with the passion and dedication of our members, sponsors and the national board, we bounced back in time to persevere and make the absolute best of our regional conferences. Despite the natural disasters that occurred, NSMH has continued to provide an unwavering competitive advantage in the hospitality industry for the membership.
In closing, I would like to thank you all for the time, thought and compassion you have dedicated to the organization. It is because of your innovative mindsets that we have made it this far! So for this national conference it is my wish that everyone will take initiative and keep an open mind to change. Throughout this weekend remember this quote from Honda’s “Tower of Success” that really hits home with the theme this year —“If you think you’ve done your best, aim higher. You can always be faster, stronger, or smarter. Keep dreaming and leaping and fighting. Keep reaching beyond your best, because better is a never ending quest”
Hospitably Yours,
Cameron ScottNational Chair 2017-2018 Virginia State University

National Planning Director Sequoyah Rodgers 2017-2018
Welcome to the Windy City!
It has been an honor and privilege to serve as the 2017-2018 National Planning Director. On behalf of the National Board, I would like to thank you for braving the cold and joining us for our 29th National Conference and Career Fair in Chicago, Illinois!
I would also like to extend our gratitude to the Hilton Chicago for hosting us this year. We could not execute a successful conference without their support. NSMH is extremely fortunate to be at such an exquisite property full of rich history.
As our industry—and our world—evolves, we must adapt not only as hospitality professionals but also as human beings. This year we wanted to equip you with the tools needed to dominate in the ever-changing hospitality industry, as well as instill within you the confidence to embrace this new age of innovation. With this in mind, the National Board created this year’s conference theme: Taking Charge of Change: Evolving, Embracing and Innovating.
We have worked diligently throughout the year to develop new workshops and provide resources and networking opportunities in order to advance your personal and professional development. At
the conclusion of this year’s conference, we hope you will feel empowered to create new innovations and become the world’s top hospitality leaders.
The National Conference also provides the opportunity to connect with fellow NSMH members from around country and create life-long friendships. We have planned themed social events throughout the weekend for you to mix business with some pleasure! We’ll kick off the weekend with the NSMH 90’s House Party, featuring “silent” disco headphones—a party experience like nothing you’ve had before! Wear your favorite onesie or pajamas to the Pajama Jam Party on Friday night. Following the Awards Gala on Saturday evening, you’ll have a second chance at prom night, and see who will be crowned the first ever NSMH King and Queen!
I challenge you to be open to new experiences and break out of your comfort zone. How can we expect to evolve in our lives and careers if we only stick to habit and routine? We’ll always regret the chances we didn’t take. Don’t be afraid to give up the good to go for the great!
Thank you for the opportunity to serve as your National Planning Director. I’ve been humbled by your dedication and commitment to NSMH and to the advancement of minority students in the hospitality industry. We hope the 29th National Conference will be one you’ll never forget.
Cheers,
Sequoyah RodgersNational Planning DirectorPennsylvania State University
