They are a common cause of hearing loss, especially in older adults who have to take medicine on a regular basis. In most cases, hearing loss occurs because the medicine damages the cochlea in the inner ear . Hearing loss caused by an ototoxic medicine tends to develop quickly. The first symptoms usually are ringing in the ears (tinnitus) and vertigo. Hearing usually returns to normal after you stop taking the medicine. But some medicines can cause permanent damage to the inner ear. This re- sults in permanent hearing loss even if you stop taking the medicine. Commonly used medicines that may cause hearing loss include: Aspirin, when large doses (8 to 12 pills a day) are taken. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen and naproxen. Certain antibiotics, especially aminoglycosides (such as gentamicin, streptomycin, and neomycin). Hearing-related side effects from these antibiotics are most com- mon in people who have kidney disease or who al- ready have ear or hearing problems. Loop diuretics used to treat high blood pressure and heart failure, such as furosemide (Lasix) or bumetanide. Medicines used to treat cancer, including cyclo- phosphamide, cisplatin, and bleomycin. Hearing-related side effects are more likely when you take two or more of these medicines at the same time. If you are using more than one of these medicines, be alert to any new hearing problems. And report hearing changes to your doctor.

1

Medicines that damage the ear and cause hearing loss are known as oto-toxic medicines.

This re-sults in permanent hearing loss even if you stop taking the medicine.

Commonly used medicines that may cause hearing loss include:

Aspirin, when large doses (8 to 12 pills a day) are taken.

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen and naproxen.

Certain antibiotics, especially aminoglycosides (such as gentamicin, streptomycin, and neomycin). Hearing-related side effects from these antibiotics are most com-mon in people who have kidney disease or who al-ready have ear or hearing problems.

Loop diuretics used to treat high blood pressure and heart failure, such as furosemide (Lasix) or bumetanide.

Medicines used to treat cancer, including cyclo-phosphamide, cisplatin, and bleomycin.

Hearing-related side effects are more likely when you take two or more of these medicines at the same time. If you are using more than one of these medicines, be alert to any new hearing problems. And report hearing changes to your doctor.

This month has a variety of topics, including an article on ototoxic drugs, the subject of October’s general meeting. In addition, the insert on pages 3 and 4 is actually a tri-fold brochure from the Hospital Kit that can be removed, folded, and used as a reference.

September General Meeting Summary The September general meeting focused on the Future of the Chapter. Several new people attended. Here are the general comments:

New time—possible 5 to 7 pm or 6 to 8 pm—it gets dark early and harder for some people to drive at night. Could be traffic issues.

New day—possible Saturday, 10 to 12 am or 1 to 3 pm.

Having munchies before the presentation. Get coordinator to arrange carpools.

Work with audiologists/dispensers in area to publicize chapter and meetings.

Work with Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) and the VA for referrals.

Volunteers Needed!

The chapter has purchased 21 acrylic holders. Each one holds about seven Survivor’s Manuals. We are looking for people who would take one to an audiologists/dispensers’ office or other location. In addition, you would need to refill the holder as needed. If you are interested, please contact Lesley Bergquist at [email protected].

America’s Most Common Workplace Injury is Hearing Loss

An article in September 1, 2016 online edition of USA Today brings attention to the high risk of hearing loss in the workplace caused by loud noise. In fact, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), hearing loss is the most common work-related injury, with 22 million workers exposed annually to hazardous levels of occupational noise. See article at:

Patty Johns’ Father Passed Away

Patty Johns was chapter secretary from May 2010 to February 2014. She moved to Colorado to take care of her parents. Her father died in September 2016. A card was sent on behalf of the chapter.
