Message From The Director

Join us for the 2020 UArts Summer Music Studies program! Whether you’re interested in pursuing a Master of Music in Music Education or fulfilling a professional growth opportunity, the Summer Music Studies program has a course for you. We’re offering more than 30 courses in three different locations, as well as online.

Engage in hands-on, high-quality learning with nationally renowned experts. Gain practical knowledge and understanding that can be implemented in your school or community. UArts is driven and determined to provide musical learning that is meaningful and current.

As K–12 music educators, you may have a specialization, but job responsibilities often require other skill sets. UArts provides you with options for coursework that make the UArts experience personalized rather than prescribed, meeting your needs at any stage of your career.

Our courses are timely and relevant, and we strive to offer the highest quality professional development and graduate studies opportunities for music educators nationwide. You’ll uncover new ways of teaching and learning through music by using the latest tools, technology and instructional strategies. I hope to see you in summer 2020!

Summer 2020 Highlights

+ Bryan Powell, of Little Kids Rock and Montclair State University, will teach Alternative Ensembles.

+ Courses like Introduction to Drum Set, Playing the Drums: Level 2 Intermediate, Introduction to Electric Bass, and Play Guitar, Teach Guitar & Ukulele will build skills in alternative areas.

+ UArts faculty Elizabeth Radigonda and Tiffany Jones will teach a new course, Preparing the Solo Singer Using Contemporary Vocal Strategies.

+ Alice Hammel will join us for Teaching Music to Students with Special Needs at Villanova University.

+ David Knott will teach Integrating Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Into Your Ensemble.

+ Jason Bizich’s course Choral Conducting Techniques will feature an evening concert event.

+ Lori Schwartz Reichl will return to teach Making Key Changes: Refresh Your Music Program.

+ Instructors Dawn Pratson and Michael Joviala will lead Introduction to Dalcroze.

+ UArts faculty Matt Gallagher and Randy Kapralick will teach Brass Instrument Technique Lab.

+ Nationally renowned Orff expert Danai Gagne will teach a half-day, 2-credit Movement & Dance Masterclass for educators who have completed all three levels of Orff.

+ Live Sound Production for Music Educators will be available again, taught by UArts faculty member JohnPaul Beattie.

+ Returning faculty member Chuck Hagler will lead multiple levels of Band Instrument Repair.

+ Conductors’ Chorus, a new 1-credit course, will be offered in tandem with Choral Conducting Techniques.

CO U R S E TI M E S All courses meet Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m., for one week (five sessions) unless otherwise noted. Exceptions to this schedule include the Orff Schulwerk Certification Levels, which meet 8 a.m.–4:30 p.m. for two weeks (10 sessions).

Note: Online courses are asynchronous, independently paced and require weekly assignments to complete.

Registration opens March 2, 2020 for non-matriculated Summer Music Studies students.

Join more than 300 music educators enriched annually by graduate coursework in the UArts Summer Music Studies Program and expand your pedagogical, technological, musical and instructional skills in all genres of music classrooms.

University of the Arts faculty and content experts from across the country provide week-long instruction that is all about creating and making meaningful music. We offer courses on multiple campuses for convenience, utilize the latest resources and faculty, and provide reasonably priced housing options for out-of-town students.

+ Complete courses for professional development or personal growth as a non-matriculated student, or apply credits to our Master of Music in Music Education degree program.

+ All courses are worth three graduate credits unless otherwise noted.

+ Graduate course credits can be used for advancement from PA Level I to Level II teaching certification.

+ PA Act 48 credit is also available. Additionally, UArts is a recognized provider of educator professional development in New Jersey and Delaware.
