Yarn The yarn used in this pattern sample is an 8ply / Double Knit.

If you decide to use a worsted weight yarn (10 ply), your blanket will be substantially bigger than the sample made in this pattern.

Part 1a - Small Squares There are two options offered for this pattern:

1. Small squares - with hearts or 2. Small squares - no hearts

Please refer to the applicable section depending on your choice. You will need to make 24 small squares in total. As this is quite a large number of squares, we will do 8 in Part 1, 8 in Part 2 and the final 8 in Part 3. You are welcome to make them all at once if that is your preference. Small Squares with Hearts If you have chosen to make the small squares with hearts, then you will need to make 24 small squares with hearts in total; 20 bottom aligned and 4 diagonally aligned.

NB: The corners for the small squares are worked differently to the centre square which will be done in Part 1b. It is important to note the difference: Small Square Corners = (2dc, ch1, 2dc) Centre Square Corners = (2hdc, ch1, 2hdc) This is important to prevent the larger centre square corners from flaring. It is a key design aspect.

Hearts

00:01:19 Video Tutorials: Right Handed Left Handed Tip! This would be a good time to watch the video tutorial. Much easier to demonstrate this section than to write it down. These hearts are not difficult, just a bit fiddly. Make 8 Hearts.

Round 1 Start with 4mm hook. Using colour B. Ch4 and sl st into the 1st ch to form a ring. Alternatively, you can start with a magic ring/circle. Ch2 to count as the first hdc, working over the tail -13hdc in the ring, join with a sl st into the 2nd chain of beg ch2. Pull tail to close the gap. Do not fasten off. Stitch count: 14 hdc (including the 2ch as a hdc).

Round 2 Using colour B. To form a heart shape work as follows: RS facing, ch3 (Fig.1) (2fptc around next st Fig.2) twice; (2fpdc around the next st) twice; 2fphdc around the next st; 1fphdc and 1fpdc around the next st; 1fptc around the next st; 1fpdc and 1fphdc around the next st; 2fphdc around the next st; (2fpdc around the next st) twice; (2fptc around next st) twice; ch3 and join with a fpslst around the first ch2 of Round 1. Fasten off colour B and secure ends (Fig.3 and Fig.4). Stitch count: 25 sts = 9 fptc, 10 fpdc, 6 fphdc and 2 x ch3.

Bottom Aligned Squares

00:08:51 Video Tutorials: Right Handed Left Handed TIP: The hearts on these 4 squares will be placed to align to the bottom of the square.

Round 3 Using colour C. On this round you will work on the ws into the back of the sts formed in Round 1. Join with a st-sc one st to the left of the top centre point of the heart (Fig.5 and Fig.6) 1sc in each of the next 13 sts (Fig.7); join with a sl st to the first st-sc. Do not fasten off. Stitch count: 14sc.

Round 4 Using colour C. Working on the ws, ch1 (this does not count as a st), 2sc in each of the 14 sts (Fig.8); join with a sl st to the first sc (Fig. 9). Do not fasten off. Stitch count: 28sc.

Round 5 Using colour C. Ch2 to count as the first dc, then work 1dc in each of the next 3 sts, (ch1, 7dc) 3 times, ch1, dc in each of the next 3 sts; join with a sl st in the second chain of beg ch2. Do not fasten off. Stitch count: 7dc per side and ch1 in each corner.


Round 6 Using colour C. Ch2 to count as the first bpdc, work into the next 3 sts as follows: fpdc, bpdc, fpdc, *(2dc, ch1, 2dc) into the ch-1 corner sp from previous round, work into the next 7 sts as follows: [(fpdc, bpdc) 3 times, fpdc],*, rpt from * to * twice, (2dc, ch1, 2dc) into last corner sp, work into the last 3 sts as follows: fpdc, bpdc, fpdc; join with a sl st or invisible join into the 2nd chain of the beg ch2 to complete the side. Fasten off colour C and secure ends. Stitch count: 7 sts per side and (2dc, ch1, 2dc) in each corner.







00:20:28 Video Tutorials: Right Handed Left Handed TIP: I use a sc to join the round instead of a sl st. This is deliberate and is used throughout the pattern. This join effectively creates a ch1 and also brings the starting point for the next round to the centre point. This will form a space under the joining sc and the starting sts from the next round will be worked into this space. Please watch my video tutorial if you are unsure.

Round 7 Using colour D. Join in any of the ch-1 corner sp with a st-dc or ch2 to count as the first dc, work 1 more dc into the same sp, *[into the next 11 sts work as follows: - (fpdc, bpdc) 5 times, fpdc], (2dc, ch1, 2dc) in the ch-1 corner sp*, rpt from * to * 3 more times, omitting the last corner, 2dc into starting corner; join with a sc into the st-dc or 2nd chain of the beg ch2 to complete the corner. Do not fasten off. Stitch count: 11 sts per side and (2dc, ch1, 2dc) in each corner.

00:22:48 Video Tutorials: Right Handed Left Handed Tip: In this round the single crochet join from the previous round counts as the ch-1 space.

Round 8 Using colour D. Ch2 to count as the first dc, then work 1 dc into the space below, *into the next 15 sts work as follows: - [(fpdc, bpdc)] 7 times, fpdc], (2dc, ch1, 2dc) in the ch-1 corner sp*, rpt from * to * 3 more times, omitting corner on last repeat, 2dc into starting corner sp; join with a sc into the 2nd chain of beg ch2. Do not fasten off. Stitch count: 15 sts per side and (2dc, ch1, 2dc) in each corner.








Round 9 Using colour D. Ch1 (this does not count as a st), *3sc into corner ch-1 sp, sk the hidden st, sc into each of the next 18 sts*, rpt from * to * 3 more times, join with an invisible join or a sl st into the first sc to complete the corner. Fasten off and secure ends. Stitch count: 18sc per side and 3sc in each corner.





Diagonally Aligned Squares

Now use the remaining 4 hearts and continue as follows:

00:28:57 Video Tutorials: Right Handed Left Handed TIP: The hearts on these 4 squares will be placed to align to the diagonal of the square. Work round 3 and round 4 the same as for the previous small squares. From this point onwards, work with rs facing.

Round 5 Using colour C. Ch2 to count as the first dc, then work 1 dc in each of the next 6 sts, (ch1, 7dc), 3 times; join with a sc to the 2nd chain of the beg ch2. Do not fasten off. Stitch count: 7dc per side and ch1 in each corner.






Round 6 Using colour C. Ch2 to count as the first fpdc, work into the next 6 sts as follows: (bpdc, fpdc) 3 times, *(2dc, ch1, 2dc) into the ch1 corner sp from the previous round, work into the next 7 sts as follows: [(fpdc, bpdc) 3 times, fpdc] *, rpt from * to * 2 more times, (2dc, ch1, 2dc) into last corner sp; join with a sl st in the 2nd chain of beginning ch2 to complete the side. Round 7 Using colour D. Round 9 Using Colour D. Ch1 (this does not count as a stitch), *3sc into corner ch-1 sp, sk the hidden st, sc into each of the next 18 sts*, rpt from * to * 3 more times; join with an invisible join or a sl st into the first sc. Fasten off and secure ends. Stitch count: 18sc per side and 3sc in each corner.

Keep the 8 small heart squares for use later on.







Small Squares - No Hearts Make 8 Squares (you will need 24 in total – the other 16 will be made in Parts 2 and 3)

Round 1 With the 4mm hook. Using colour C. Ch4 and sl st into the 1st st to form a ring, alternatively you can start with a magic ring/circle. Ch2 to count as the first dc, 2dc in the ring, (ch1, 3dc), 3 times, omitting the ch1, 2dc on last repeat; join with a sc into the first ch2 (refer to the tip above). This forms the first rs round. Part 1b - Centre Square

Round 29 Using colour B. Join in the centre sc of any corner 3sc with a st-hdc, 1hdc, ch2, 2hdc in the same st, *1hdc into each of the next 78 sts, (2hdc, ch2, 2hdc) in the centre sc of the corner 3sc from Round 28*, rpt from * to * 3 more times omitting the last corner. Join in the top of the beginning hdc using a sl st or, alternatively use an invisible join. Fasten off colour B and secure ends. Stitch count: 78hdc per side and (2hdc, ch2, 2hdc) in each corner. Tip: It is recommended that you block the square before moving on to the next round. You will probably notice that it is quite wavy at this stage. This is due to the transition from the ribbed section to the panel section. Gentle blocking will settle this into shape.

Thoroughly wet it.

Gently squeeze out any excess water. Do not wring or twist!

Lay the square out flat.

Pat and shape it into a nice symmetrical square. Be gentle.

Pin securely in place using rustproof pins.

Leave to dry. Use a fan to speed up the drying process.

You should now have 24 small squares ready for Part 4.



Part 4 - Joining Squares and Border


Joining the Squares. With 4mm hook. Using Colour A and the 20 bottom-aligned squares; join into 4 strips of 5 squares each – ensure that the hearts are all facing the same direction.

Do not join from the centre sc of the corner 3sc of the square.

Start one st in from the centre sc and finish one st before the next centre sc.

With the ws held together, start with a st-sc one st away from the centre sc, sc into next 19 sts (Fig.18).

Fasten off and secure ends. The next step will be to join the 4 strips and the corner diagonally-aligned heart squares to the main square (Fig.20). The small squares must be joined to the centre square in a continuous seam as follows:

Start by laying the components out on a flat surface (Fig. 19).

Using colour A and with WS together, start at the top of the corner diagonally aligned (Fig.

20). Start one st in from the corner and join with a st-sc, then sc into the next 19 sts, sc in

the corner sts (indicated by blue arrows in Fig. 21).

Sc to join the corner st of the next small square to the chsp in the corner of the centre

square (indicated by white arrows in Fig. 21), sk the hidden st in the centre square chsp,

(sc in the next 20sts, sc2tog in the last corner of the current square and the first corner of

the next square (Fig. 22, 23 and 24)) 4 times.

20 sc, sc to join the corner st of the current small square to the last chsp corner of the

centre square, sc to join the corner sts of the next two small squares, sc in the next 20 sts.

Finish one st before the corner (Fig. 25). Fasten off and secure ends.

Repeat for the other 3 sides, work over existing seams.

Round 1 Using colour A. Join in the centre sc of any corner 3sc with a st-hdc, 1hdc, ch2, 2hdc in the same st, *(1hdc into each of the next 20 sts, hdc2tog) 5 more times, 1hdc into each of the next 20 sts, (2hdc, ch2, 2hdc) in the next st (i.e. the centre sc of the corner 3sc) *, rpt from * to * 3 more times omitting the last corner. Join in the beginning st-hdc using a sl st or, alternatively use an invisible join. Fasten off colour A and secure ends. Stitch count: 140 hdc and 6hdc2tog per side and (2hdc, ch2, 2hdc) in each corner.

Note: Round 1 is the 2nd last round (the white round) in the picture above.


Round 2 Using colour B. Join in any ch-2 corner sp with a st-sc, work 2 more sc in the same sp, *bphdc around each of the next 150 sts, 3sc in the corner sp*, rpt from * to * 3 more times omitting the last corner. Join in the top of the beginning st-sc using a sl st or, alternatively use an invisible join. Fasten off colour B and secure ends. Stitch count: 150 bphdc per side and 3sc in each corner.








Round 3 Using colour A. Join with a st-sc in the centre sc of any corner 3sc, work 2 more sc in the same st, *1sc into each of the next 152 sts, 3sc into the next sc (i.e. the centre sc of the corner 3sc) *, rpt from * to * 3 more times omitting the last corner. Join in the top of the beginning st- sc using a sl st or, alternatively use an invisible join. Fasten off colour A and secure ends. Stitch count: 152 sc per side and 3 sc in each corner.

Join with a st-sc in the centre sc of any corner 3sc, work 2 more sc in the same st, *sk st (see tip above), 1sc into each of the next 153 sts, 3sc into the next sc (i.e. the centre sc of the corner 3sc) *, rpt from * to * 3 more times omitting the last corner. Join in the top of the beginning st-sc using a sl st or, alternatively use an invisible join. Fasten off colour B. Stitch count: 153 sc per side and 3sc in each corner.

Join with a st-sc in the centre sc of any corner 3sc, work tc and sc in the same st, *[work into the next 155 sts as follows: (tc, sc) 77 times, tc into the last st], (1sc, 1tc, 1sc) in the centre sc of the corner 3sc *, rpt from * to * 3 more times omitting the last corner. Join in the top of the beginning st-sc with a sl st or, alternatively use an invisible join. Fasten off colour A. Stitch count: 78 tc and 77 sc per side and (sc, tc, sc) in each corner.


Round 6 Using colour B. Join with a st-sc in the centre tc of any corner, work tc and sc in the same st, *[into the next 157 sts work as follows: (tc, sc) 78 times, tc in the last st], (1sc, 1tc, 1sc) in the centre tc of the corner*, rpt from * to * 3 more times omitting the last corner. Join in the top of the beginning sc with a sl st or, alternatively use an invisible join. Fasten off colour B. Stitch count: 79 tc and 78 sc per side and (sc, tc, sc) in each corner.








Round 7 Using colour A. Join with a st-sc in the centre tc of any corner, work tc and sc in the same st, *[into the next 159 sts work as follows: (tc, sc) 79 times, tc in the last st], (sc, tc, sc) in the centre tc of the corner*, rpt from * to * 3 more times omitting the last corner. Join in the top of the beginning st-sc with a sl st or, alternatively use an invisible join. Fasten off colour A. Stitch count: 80 tc and 79 sc per side and (sc, tc, sc) in each corner.


Round 8 Using colour B. Join with a st-sc in the centre tc of any corner, work 2 more sc in the same st, *1sc into each of the next 161 sts, 3sc into the next st (i.e. the centre tc of the corner) *, rpt from * to * 3 more times omitting the last corner. Round 11 With 4mm hook. Using colour A. Join in the top of the beginning st-sc using a sl st or, alternatively use an invisible join. Fasten off colour A and secure ends. Stitch count: 169 bphdc per side and 3 sc in each corner.


Round 12 Using colour C. Join with a st-sc in the centre sc of any corner 3sc, work 2 more sc in the same sp, *1sc into each of the next 171 sts, 3sc in the next corner st (i.e. the centre sc of the corner 3sc)*, rpt from * to * 3 more times omitting the last corner. Join in the top of the beginning st-sc using a sl st or, alternatively use an invisible join. Fasten off colour C and secure ends. Stitch count: 171 sc per side and 3sc in each corner.








Round 13 Using colour A. Join with a st-sc in the centre sc of any corner 3sc, work 2 more sc in the same st, *1sc into each of the next 173 sts, 3sc in the next st (i.e. the centre sc of the corner 3sc) *, rpt from * to * 3 more times omitting the last corner. Join in the top of the beginning st- sc using a sl st or, alternatively use an invisible join. Fasten off colour A and secure ends. Stitch count: 173 sc per side and 3 sc in each corner.


Round 14 Using colour C. Join in the 3rd st before the centre sc of any corner 3sc and work as follows: *dc3tog over 3 sts (see special sts), ch3, perpendicular 2-dc cluster (see special sts), dc3tog all in the same st (i.e. the centre sc of the corner 3sc), ch3, perpendicular 2-dc cluster, dc3tog over the next 3 sts, ch3, perpendicular 2-dc cluster, (sk st, dc3tog over the next 3 sts, ch3, perpendicular 2-dc cluster) 42 times, sk st*, rpt from * to * 3 more times. Join in the top of the beginning st-dc3tog with a sl st or, alternatively use an invisible join. Fasten off colour C (even though we will continue with colour C for the next round). Stitch count: 44 x dc3tog and 45 perpendicular 2-dc clusters per side and a dc3tog in each corner.








Round 15 Using colour C. Join with a st-dc in the top of any corner stitch between the perpendicular 2-dc clusters from the previous round, work 2 more dc, ch1, 3dc in the same st, *(ch1, 3dc into the top of the stitch between the perpendicular 2-dc clusters) 44 times, ch1, (3dc, ch1, 3dc) in next corner st*, rpt from * to * 3 more times omitting the last corner. Join in the top of the beginning st-dc with a sl st or, alternatively use an invisible join. Fasten off colour C. Stitch count: 44 x 3dc (132 dc) and 45 x ch1 per side, (3dc, ch1, 3dc) in each corner.


Round 16 Using colour A. Join with a st-sc in any ch-1 corner sp, (don’t miss the hidden stitch) *(sc in next 3dc, sc in ch sp) 45 times, sc in next 3dc, sc in corner ch1 sp *, rpt from * to * 3 more times omitting the last corner. Join in the top of the beginning st-sc using a sl st or, alternatively use an invisible join. Fasten off colour A and secure ends. Stitch count: 183 sc per side and 1 sc in each corner.








Round 17 Using colour C. Join with a st-sc in any corner sc, work 2 more sc in the same st, *1sc into each of the next 183 sts, 3sc into the next corner sc*, rpt from * to * 3 more times omitting the last corner. Join in the top of the beginning st- sc using a sl st or, alternatively use an invisible join. Fasten off colour C and secure ends. Stitch count: 183 sc per side and 3 sc in each corner.


Round 18 Using colour A. Join in the centre sc of any corner 3sc with a st-hdc, 1hdc, ch2, 2hdc in the same st, *1hdc into each of the next 185 sts, (2hdc, ch2, 2hdc) in the next st (i.e. the centre sc of the corner 3sc) *, rpt from * to * 3 more times omitting the last corner. Join in the top of the beginning st- hdc using a sl st. Do not fasten off. Stitch count: 185 hdc per side and (2hdc, ch2, 2hdc) in each corner.








Round 19 Using colour A. Sl st into the next st, then sl st into the corner sp, ch1 (this does not count as a st), work 3 sc in the same sp *1bphdc around each of the next 189 sts, 3sc in the ch-2 corner sp*, rpt from * to * 3 more times omitting the last corner. Join in the top of the beginning sc using a sl st. Do not fasten off. Stitch count: 189 bphdc sts per side and 3 sc in each corner.


Round 20 Using colour A. Ch1 (this does not count as a st), starting in the last bpdc of Round 19, work a reverse sc (crab stitch) in each st around the edge. Fasten off colour A and secure ends. Stitch count: 768 sts around the entire edge. 191 per side and 1 st in each corner.
