Our Market Demographics

• Canada’s population is more than 33.5 million people

• Seniors represent over 8 million Canadians

• As the Baby Boomers – 1946-1966 – age, the proportion of seniors will increase, peaking in 2026

• Canadian consumers over age 65 control 80% of all money in financial institutions and 77% of all privately held financial assets

• This market is credited with half of all discretionary spending in North America

Independent Living at Home

•93% Canadian seniors living on their own or with family

•The majority of Canadian seniors live in their own home, and wish to remain there as long as possible

•Only 7% of will move to long term care facility

•Some seniors’ accommodation is aimed at ‘independent’ seniors, and are not equipped for ‘aging in place’

•Many long-term care / nursing homes are old and in need of updating

Seniors Are Staying at Home

•80% of older Canadians own their own home

•75% of these homeowners are debt free

•85% have made simple changes to their homes; of these, 70% have made at least one modification to make their homes easier more accessible or lifestyle-friendly

•67% of those making home modifications believe doing so will allow them to live there longer than they would have otherwise been able to – at least 10 years

#1 Risk at Home - Falling

•In Canada, falls account for 4 of every 5 injury-related hospital admissions by seniors, cause personal suffering, loss of independence and lower quality of life:

• 50% of falls occur in the home

• 20% of deaths related to an injury can be traced back to falls

• 20% of seniors hospitalized from a fall never walk again

• 40% of admissions to nursing home are due to falls

The High Cost of Falling

In the US, there were 1.8 million falls by people age 65+ leading to an emergency room visit in 2000:

•50% of falls occur inside the home!

•23% occurred outside, but near the home.

•1 in 3 people over 65 fall at least once every year.

Home modification is an essential strategy to help reduce falls by seniors

Aging and Disabilities

•1 in 4 seniors will face restrictions in their activities due to long-term health problems and disabilities

•1.5 million or 13% of Ontarians live with disabilities

•This number will increase substantially as the population ages

•Mobility (walking, climbing stairs, carrying an object for short distances, standing in one spot)

•Chronic Pain (constant or recurring)

Legislation

Ontario Building Code regulates barrier free building standards for commercial and institutional structures

The Ontario Human Rights Code requires a “duty to accommodate” persons with disabilities in a variety of services. The Code supersedes the building Code

AODA 2005 - Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act Section 2 of The Planning Act -designates accessibility as a Provincial Interest

There is currently new legislation with respect to accessibility - CSA B651 Accessible Design for The Built Environment - has set guidelines for commercial and some residential accessibility
