DESCRIPTION

Almost half of Canada’s total population is made up of those who are over the age of 45. We are ageing rapidly and seeking ways to remain independent. Since only 7% of Canadian seniors eventually move into a long term care facility, it leaves 93% living either on their own, or with family and friends. We are facing a demographic tsunami and we will all feel the effects. We have to improve access now!

#1 Risk at Home - Falling

•In Canada, falls account for 4 of every 5 injury-related hospital admissions by seniors, cause personal suffering, loss of independence and lower quality of life:

• 50% of falls occur in the home

• 20% of deaths related to an injury can be traced back to falls

• 20% of seniors hospitalized from a fall never walk again

• 40% of admissions to nursing home are due to falls

The High Cost of Falling

In the US, there were 1.8 million falls by people age 65+ leading to an emergency room visit in 2000:

•50% of falls occur inside the home!

•23% occurred outside, but near the home.

•1 in 3 people over 65 fall at least once every year.

Home modification is an essential strategy to help reduce falls by seniors
