Season by season, these hard-workingranchers, cowboys and their families preserve a vanishingculture and a uniquely American spirit. Admission to this specialconversation is free with your paid Museum admission. Gail’s multiple talents come from both his ranching andsongwriting backgrounds. His grandfather, , wroteseveral well-known cowboy songs, including Tying the Knots inthe Devil's Tail and The Dude Wrangler. Gail worked on hisfather's ranches off and on while growing up, and later workedfull-time for several years onthe Cross U and Spider Ranchesin Yavapai County, AZ. He's alsosaddled up for the Yolo Ranch,the 7UP, the DC Cattle Co. andthe O6 Ranch. In 1987 Gail and his brotherLew made a film about cowboyscalled, Ranch Album, which wasultimately released as anational PBS special. The filmwas awarded a CINE GoldenEagle, TV Guide called it‘cinematically brilliant andwonderfully constructed’ andthe Wall Street Journal said itwas ‘a gorgeous film’. Approximately four hundred Arabians, Half-Arabians andAnglo-Arabians will model their natural abilities as sporthorses at the Idaho Horse Park in Nampa, Idaho, Sept.22-25, 2010. The Sport Horse Nationals Arabian and Half-Arabian Championship Horse Show (Sport Horse Nationals),produced by the Arabian Horse Association (AHA) of Aurora,CO., features 90 classes in four divisions, the sport horsedivision, hunter/jumper division, dressage division and thedriving division. Exhibitors from 41 states and two Canadian provinceswill come to Nampa to compete in the national-level show inits eighth year. Created after the sport horse classes outgrew the space and time allotted for them at the AHA U.S.Nationals, Sport Horse Nationals is the only single-breedsport horse event in the nation offered just for Arabian,Half-Arabian and Anglo-Arabian horses registered with AHAor the Canadian Arabian Horse Registry. New this year is a Power and Speed Jumpers Exhibition.A two-part class, the power portion is ridden first and is nottimed. If the horse and rider team is clear through the powerportion, without rails, refusals or falls, they continue into thespeed portion of the course. The speed portion is timed andthe team with the least faults wins, using time as thedeciding factor for equal faults.

ESPBRA has been in theEast Valley for over 15 years and is branch of theProgressive Barrel Racing Associations the runs aclub in the West Valley at the Buckeye EquestrianCenter in Buckeye, AZ. For the 2010 year ESPBRAgave away thousands of dollars in prizes, paybacksand awards, including a Trophy Saddle and 18Usher Brand Buckles.

ESPBRA is progressive in that a horse and ridercan progressive with actual run times throughdifferent divisions collecting points and paybacksthrough-out the year. CUTTING HORSE EXHIBIT DEBUTS IN WEATHERFORD The Doss Heritage and Culture Center in Weatherford,Texas, will unveil its newest exhibit featuring the NationalCutting Horse Association Nov. 16. The exhibit, entitled “Whereit all began…”, traces the sport of cutting from its origin onWestern ranches through the present day arena competition.

The exhibit includes tack, awards, photos and many moreitems that represent the heritage and evolution of the cuttinghorse industry. From cutting’s first champion in 1898, a 22-year-old gelding named Old Hub, to NCHA’s all-time leadingcutting horse sire High Brow Cat, you’ll see priceless artifactsfrom the history of the cutting industry, and it will all beshowcased where the sport of cutting got its start – the heartof Parker County, Texas.

“Anyone who is interested in cutting horses will want tosee this exhibit that celebrates the sport of cutting, and seehow much it has changed over the decades,” said C.B.

Williams, exhibit coordinator at the Doss. “At the beginning,cutting horses would compete on the weekends but return todo ranch work during the week. Most cutting horses today arebred and trained only to compete.”

The exhibit runs Nov. 16 through April 30. It is openduring regular museum hours, Tuesday through Saturdayfrom 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m.Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for students and seniorcitizens.

USET Foundation Will Award 2011 Lionel Guerrand-Hermes TrophyBy: Rebecca Walton Gladstone, NJ – January 13, 2011 – The UnitedStates Equestrian Team Foundation is pleased to announcethat the recipient of the 2011 Lionel Guerrand-HermesTrophy will be talented eventing rider . Eachyear this award is presented to a Young Rider in one of theOlympic disciplines who exemplifies both sportsmanship andhorsemanship. In 2011 Coudray had a banner year, winningthe Jersey Fresh CCI and the Galway Downs InternationalHorse Trials CIC, as well as leading the U.S. efforts at theBoekelo CCI in Holland. “When the USET Foundation told me that I was thewinner of this year’s award I went and looked it up,” com-mented Coudray. “I was pretty honored to look at the othernames on the list throughout the years and think of whatthose people have gone on to do later in their careers." Over the years, Coudray has consistently shown hertalent as a young rider. She won Team Gold at the NorthAmerican Young Riders Championships in both 2004 and

Certainly I am honored toreceive the award and the opportunities that I had in 2010,like going to Holland. Hopefully it will help open the door toeven more opportunities but I still have to go out and earngood results year after year.” Coudray will be presented with this prestigious awardat the USET Foundation Reception on January 28th, in Wel-lington, Florida.

AzBCR.com (aka AZBackCountyRiders.com) is holding its’ fourth annualsite support ride. Fees collected will help to pay for the operational costs of thisgreat web site. The site was created in December, 2006, by a lonely rider that wanted ridingbuddies and now it has grown to over 2,500 statewide members! It is not a clubor association, it’s just made up of folks looking to find people that want to getout riding and enjoying their horses. Registering on AzBCR.com is free. We have a non-advertising environmentand strive to keep it that way. This year’s ride will be held at White Dog in Catalina, Tucson; located northof Tucson. Pima County has granted us the privilege to use an area that isotherwise closed to the public for this special event. The cost is $25 per person(paid in advance before Feb 28, $30 after that) for the weekend which includesdinner on Saturday, a raffle entry, guided rides into the wilderness, open ridingand best of all, meeting lots of friends. Corrals are available for $15 for theweekend (reserve in advance).

won with a high score of 228 – five points higher than the nextfinalist. “I knew he was pretty special tonight,” McCutcheon said. “I feltpressure for sure, because (I) wanted to do him justice. He’s a greatlittle horse.” Reining was one of the first disciplines to take to the arena atthe Games. In the reining team competition earlier in the week,McCutcheon placed third helping his U.S. teammates to claim theteam gold medal. Colonels Nite Special is a 6-year-old sorrel solid Paint-bredstallion also registered with the American Quarter HorseAssociation. His sire, Colonels Smokingun (known as “Gunner”throughout the reining industry) is the top Paint Horse reining sirein the National Reining Horse Association (NRHA). The dam is MifsDoll AQHA, sired by Mifillena AQHA. Colonels Nite Special was bredby of Newfoundland, N.J. and is currentlyowned by Turnabout Farm in Gloucester, Maine. He was ridden bytop reining competitor of Aubrey, Texas. Thehorse is the 2007 NRHA Futurity Intermediate Open Champion andhas $194,237 in NRHA lifetime earnings. “The American Paint Horse Association wishes to congratulateboth horse and rider on a job well done in such a prestigiousinternational event,” said , Executive Director ofAPHA. “This accomplishment highlights the talent and athleticismthat our American Paint Horses possess. We also extend that praiseto the sire of this horse, “Gunner” who continues to be a leadingreining sire and one who passes along his remarkable abilities to hisoffspring.”
