Thinking of Lent Advent prepares us for Christ’s birth; Lent prepares us for the glorious act of Christ’s resurrection. Churches have special services during the weeks of Lent, but it’s what each of us does re-garding our spiritual life that makes
Lent most meaningful.
Lent is a good time to read, study and inwardly digest the four gospels. (The word gospel means “good news.”)
A college student decided to work his way through Matthew, Mark, Luke and John for his Lenten devotional time. Soon he was fascinated by the stories, such as the Pharisees and Sadducees trying to trap Jesus in debate. The bril-liant Jesus handled every occasion with wisdom, leaving the authorities
dumbfounded.
During his devotional time, the student was filled with laughter and amaze-ment at the brilliant son of God, who was only in his 30s. Get to know the good news, and you’ll understand the
young man’s amazement.

Introducing our own
Vern Pat Nelson In Concert at the
Huntington Central Library 7111 Talbert Ave., Huntington Beach
Sunday, February 21
at 5:00pm
Tickets are $10
Come and listen to the works of Beethoven,
Prokoviev, and jazz by our very gifted and tal-
ented accompanist, Vern. He will even be taking
requests!
Did you know...
Internationally acclaimed composer/pianist Vern Pat Nelson is known as one of the West Coast's premier interpreters of Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, and contem-porary music. Vern began playing piano and compos-ing at the age of four. He obtained a Bachelor of Mu-sic at the San Francisco Conservatory and a Master of Music at the University of Texas in Austin. Vern has also written literally hundreds of religious works during his past decade working as a music di-rector for various Catholic churches. Many of his pieces are in Spanish or bilingual. Most of them are published by Loose Cannon Press and can be heard, in excerpts, on his website www.vernnelson.com. In 1997 Vern returned to California to create the mu-sic for several network TV comedy specials written and directed by his old school friend Steve Oedekerk (Ace Ventura, Nothing To Lose). Since 1999 Mr. Nelson's "savage-jazz" quintet The Vern Nelson Problem has become well-known in the LA and Orange County area for their crazed and pas-sionate renditions of jazz and Latin standards. Starting in the spring they can be heard playing the theme mu-sic to Fox's upcoming drama "Exile in the City."
If you have any questions about the concert, you
may see Vern on Sunday mornings.
Help for Haitians
I am so proud of the membership of OUMC. You should be proud of yourself. We have received 13 Health kits. That is amazing! You still have time if you’d like to contribute more health kits. If you need the list of items to be in each kit, please call the church office and I’ll be glad to help you. These health kits are so important to those affected by dis-aster. They may seem like so little but in fact are huge in need. We have until February 6 to turn in all our kits. Great job!
Thanks to Tom Scott of
Harley-Davidson
Anaheim-Fullerton
Many of you may have noticed that we have had more than our fair share of graffiti on the campus in recent months. It was a big problem and the city of Fullerton was threatening to cite us. As soon as we paint it out, it’s back. So, in comes Tom Scott from Harley shop down the street. When ap-proached by Pastor Vern, Tom generously donated a large amount of paint so we can keep our campus free of that unsightly graf-fiti. We appreciate Tom’s generous donation.
His personal ministry
Newspapers recently carried the story of a concerned layman who started a new kind of prayer ministry. He set up a booth close to a fairly busy road. He hung a sign that read “Need prayer? Stop here.”
The man was surprised at the response. He was kept busy praying. After all, who doesn’t need prayer?
What a blessing that a man with a thoughtful mind and a concerned spirit chose to minister to passers-by, who were humble enough to admit they needed prayer.
