Pastor:
Rev. Frederick A. Young
We welcome the Rev. Dr. Galen E. Russell III to Christ Church as our new Lead Pastor. Pastor Russell plans to be on staff September 15, 2014. He prefers to be called either “Galen” or “Pastor Galen” - your choice! He joins us from Chapel Hill UCC of Camp Hill, PA, where he has served as the pastor since the fall of 2000. During his tenure there he initiated a youth ministry, confirmation program, and mission trips. Sensing the need for stronger lay involvement, he guided the church in revising the committee structure and began a Praise! Worship team to lead worship once a month. His interest in the importance of small group ministry led to the creation of several small groups for special purposes: to write a new church mission statement, to develop special interest groups, and to address specific topics in ministry. During his tenure active church membership increased from 90 to 200 people. In addition to his local church responsibilities, he led the Penn Central Conference Youth Ministry for nine years. In short, Pastor Russell has been in the ministry for 29 years and served 3 congregations in two different states. Galen and his wife Barbara have a blended family of five grown children - three sons and two daughters. Barbara is a Branch Manager for Advanced Medical Staffing in West Reading. The Russells plan to relocate to the Elizabethtown area. The following is a message from Pastor Russell to Ken Collins and to the members of Christ Church: “I want to express my sincere appreciation to you and to the good folk at Christ Church for making Barb and me feel so welcome! The Meet and Greet time was a wonderful way for us to see people, share in the joy of putting name and face together. Thank you very much for the wonderful meal that evening, and the celebration lunch in Lititz! ...And, lastly, thank you to the congregation for acting on the discernment that took place in their hearts as they offered me the call to be their pastor. I am touched and moved by their responsiveness to God’s movement in their hearts.” Pastor Russell

Fellowship
It’s difficult to imagine an event here at Christ Church without good food and fellowship, and the folks of the Fellowship Committee have hosting events down to a science. Whether it be the church auction, annual picnic, or a wedding or funeral luncheon, hospitality is their strong suit. It takes a team to pull off feeding the masses, and Fellowship does it with the ease of a well oiled machine. Under the leadership of Diane Kretzing, meals are planned, shopping for the masses accomplished (think it’s hard work shopping for your family? Imagine shopping for a church family!), tables are set, and food is prepared and served. After all the delicious food is consumed, fellowship goes about the business of cleaning up and putting the kitchen back in order. Of course, it isn’t all work - there’s a lot of camaraderie that goes on behind the scenes as well. If you have a knack for cooking and hospitality, then Fellowship would love to have you! Please contact Diane Kretzing or the church office for more information. And the next time you enjoy a dinner served by the Fellowship folks, thank them for being a blessing and providing the gift of food!

Soup Group
Once again the Soup Group will be gathering downstairs in the kitchen to prepare Christ Church’s signature beef vegetable soup for the Elizabethtown Community Cupboard. Many volunteers are needed to help with dicing, slicing, filling quart containers, and helping with kitchen clean-up. If you only have an hour to spare, won’t you come out Tuesday July 15th beginning at 9:30 AM to lend a hand? For more information, please contact Cheryl Dively or sign up on the events board.
Serving the Needy: First Reformed UCC Meal
Tuesday July 8th, 2014
This is a congregational “all call” for helping to either serve a meal or provide brownies for the less fortunate folks who depend on a hearty, hot meal at First Reformed in Lancaster. Many volunteers are needed, with at least four adult men for transporting and security. Sign-up sheets are posted on the events board for both serving and providing brownies. All volunteers are asked to meet at the church at 3:30 PM, ready to load supplies and meal containers for the meal which begins at 5:30. We hope to return to the church no later than 7:30 PM. Thank you for all that you do to serve God’s children.
2014 Vacation Thank Offering Off to a
Great Start This year’s VTO, The Bear Bags program for hungry children in Elizabethtown Area Schools, is off to a terrific start, thanks in part to congregational contributions to Jean Fasching upon her retirement. Jean designated the Bear Bags program the recipient of $270 which, in the new school year, will go directly to help stuff backpacks with food for youngsters to bring home with them on the weekend. Please remember the Bear Bags and VTO this summer. Watch the backpack and contribution “thermometer” in the front of the sanctuary as we get closer to our goal of ending hunger for the children of our community. * Volunteers willing to help pack on a Wednesday morning at
Elizabethtown High School over the summer are needed - for schedule, see weekly bulletin, MailChimp, or Christ Church website for more details

Christ Church’s New Website Now
“Live” and Ready for You
In an effort to keep you current and caught up with all that’s happening at Christ Church, we invite you to visit our most recently updated website. The URL is still the same, etownucc.org, but we think you’ll find this new platform current, user friendly, and very informative. From the new website, you will be able to access schedules for ushers, greeters, and nursery, as well as acolytes. In addition, the current month’s NET will be available for online viewing. The calendar is also posted online, so you never need to worry about missing a committee meeting. For your convenience, all upcoming events are published “at a glance”.
Please check it out and tell us what you think!
“At Christ Church we have many talented, dedicated, giving, caring people. Thank you all for everything you do for Christ Church and beyond. One aspect of our church that is special to me is the various musi-cians of all ages singing, ringing, playing instruments, accompanying, leading the music, and those appreci-ating everyone’s efforts. What a joy to share our praises to the Lord!” Many sincere thanks, Ruthann Ressler
“To My Church Family ~ Retirement is such a special time of reflection and anticipation - a time to ask “What’s next?” - much like Graduation, without the job application waiting in the wings! I want to thank you for the gift from the church, the beautiful flowers, delicious cake, warm celebration during the service, and all of your kind well wishes. A special joy is knowing that more children will enjoy a good meal due to your generous donations to the Bear Bag program. These milestones are a time of gathering - collecting memories of special relationships and rich experiences and placing them in our heart’s scrapbook to carry with us always. The best part of my job was getting to know so many of you better as you stopped by to volunteer, to purchase a grocery card, or to share your personal challenges and joys. Often during worship I looked around knowing what you were quietly experiencing and said a prayer. Your courage, faith, generosity of spirit, compassion and energy have been such an inspiration over the years and I’m grateful we were able to walk together for a while along life’s journey. As Christ Church begins this next chapter in its rich history, we are all challenged to ask “What’s next?” Each of us has the opportunity to join a different committee, continue sharing our talents and interests where we’re currently serving, or explore new avenues where the church can share God’s love with the world. I look forward to worshipping and serving with all of you as we begin to write the first page.” Blessings, Jean Fasching
“To the Consistory and Congregation of Christ Church! Thank you for your generous gift of the hand carved Nativity from the West Bank I received as a celebration of my graduation. I love it, and it is a wonderful addition to my Nativity collection. When I look at it I am reminded of how blessed I am to be serving Christ Church. You have been extremely generous and supportive throughout my ministry and my studies.” Many blessings! Pastor Fred
