1 PRESIDENTS MESSAGE It really is February, even though there is little snow on the ground. In six short weeks the MTNA National Conference will be taking place in New York City. I have missed very few conferences since my first one in 1976. There is so much to do and learn at these conferences. I feel enriched and excited after returning home, and I enjoy trying out all the new ideas with my students. If you haven’t attended a national conference, this might be the time to do so - March 24-28. It starts with Pedagogy Saturday: Teaching Artistry or Professional Studio Institute: Building a Successful Studio in Any Kind of Economy. Pedagogy Saturday begins with a master class with Nelita True, and continues with such topics as A Practical Guide to Fingering, Approaching Anna Magdalena and the Two Part Inventions, Teaching Artistry from the Very First Lesson with pedagogues Scott McBride Smith, Marjorie Lee, Marvin Blickenstaff and Peter Mack. Professional Studio Institute has topics such as Professional Documents That Ensure Success, Finding and Keeping Students, Legal Issues for the Independent Music Teacher with teachers Beth Klingenstein, Scott McBride Smith and Lee Galloway. There will be numerous Publisher Showcases with Alfred, Frederick Harris, FJH, Faber, Kjos, Willis, Hal Leonard, and many more. There is always much free music available for the attendees. Besides the master class with Nelita True, Marvin Blickenstaff will give an intermediate class, Alexander Kobrin an early advanced class, and Menahem Pressler an advanced class. Benjamin Zander, conductor of the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra will give the Keynote Address. Duo-pianists Stecher & Horowitz will perform at the Opening Session, and all the competition winners will perform in concert each afternoon. There are, of course, numerous concerts throughout the city and numerous Broadway shows to see. Please consider attending and being part of Eastern Division in New York City. Visit the website for detailed information regarding sessions, schedule, showcases, exhibitors, events, tours of NYC, hotel reservations and registration. https://members.mtna.org/conference2012/registration.html I’m hoping to see many of you there. Fall Competition Winners’ Recital

The 2011 Fall Competition Winners’ Recital was held at the Seacoast Academy of Music on Monday, January 2, 2012 for a full house. Christine Petrucci interviewed each of the winners "ala From the Top" before they performed and a good time was had by all. Kevin Chen, winner of the Junior Piano category and a student of Mila Filatova, and Kevin Ma, alternate of the Senior Piano category and a student of Lodowig Crofoot, performed their entire programs in preparation for the Eastern Division Competitions. Sam Williams, winner of the Elementary Composition Competition and a student of Catherine York, performed his composition titled Gloom Be Gone. Kara and Natalia Grellmann, representatives for NH in the piano duet category and students of Catherine York, played their Liszt Hungarian Rhapsody. Caleb Darling, winner of the Senior Composition Competition and a student of Mila Filatova, was unable to perform at the recital, but his composition, Prelude, Op. 1, No. 3, received an Honorable Mention at the Division Level Competitions. Lynne Wilby gave each performer a piano replica/music box to each of the performers and explained that these were from the collection of another fine musician - pianist, composer and teacher Cecile LeVeille Campagna, Lynne’s mother.

Doris Dodd Schuster Scholarship Winners

Elizabeth Hodges of Bow, NH, is the winner of the 2012 Doris Dodd Schuster Scholarship. Liz studied with Cheryl Laughlin of Concord for 13 years. She is a freshman at Plymouth State University in the Piano Performance and Pedagogy program and performs with the Piano Ensemble and plays flute with the Symphonic Band. Liz’s career goals are to become a piano teacher as well as a teacher of creative music classes for young children with differing abilities. She says she will always want to make music with others as a collaborative pianist and a member of an ensemble. The Doris Dodd Schuster Scholarship is awarded yearly to a first-year college student majoring in music. Applicants must be New Hampshire residents and must submit an essay, resume, transcript, recommendation letter, and an audio performance recording. Doris Dodd Schuster was an active member of NHMTA for many years before her tragic auto accident.
