Nuestros estudiantes de 11avo grado, celebraron el Día Nacional de la Juventud, y compartieron con la comunidad educativa infor-maciones relevantes sobre esta festividad; la cual se conmemora

el 31 de enero en honor a San Juan Bosco, quien fue llamado padre y maestro de la juventud. Bosco fue un sacerdote católico italiano, educador y escritor quien dedicó su vida al mejoramiento y la educación de los jóve-nes de las calles, delincuentes juveniles y otros niños desfavorecidos de la Italia del Siglo XIX.

Los alumnos explicaron en qué consiste esta celebración, presentaron al-gunas frases relativas a la juventud y ejemplos de algunos jóvenes em-prendedores.

Desde finales de enero, con el Natalicio de Juan Pablo Duarte y durante el mes de febrero, iniciamos las cele-braciones del mes de la patria, con diferentes actos de

banderas hasta nuestra Feria Dominicana. Una parte primor-dial de nuestro programa es cultivar nuestros valores patrios, razón por la cual los alumnos reciben diversas asignaciones que los sumergen en toda la historia, cultura y tradiciones de nuestro país. Presentaciones, personajes típicos, bailes, dra-mas, el juramento trinitario, poemas y acrósticos son parte de las actividades que toda la comunidad pudo disfrutar de parte de nuestros alumnos.

Igualmente, celebramos a Francisco del Rosario Sánchez y Matías Ramón Mella, como ejes principales de nuestra inde-pendencia y por ser considerados Padres de la Patria.

The New Horizons Pin BoardNEW HORIZONS HOSTS THE RD INTER-NATIONAL MATHEMATICS COMPETITION

Our school, winner of many local and international mathematics competitions, was host to the most re-cognized international mathematics competition in

the country: “The American Math Competition”.

It is the first time that the Dominican Republic participates in this competition since the change of regulations was for-malized, which requires each participating country to have an institution that guarantees the quality of the process, obtaining New Horizons the honor of such responsibility. With the results of the exams, all of which are taught in English, it is possible to enter the international classifica-tion according to the individual results of the students, the collective results of an academic institution or the results as a country.

“The American Math Competition is a standardized test given on the same day and at the same time worldwide; thus, the students who are evaluated in this competition do so at the same level of international rigor, constituting a sort of quality control of the teaching of mathematics “.

The competition aims to assess the mathematical level of students from around the world and is an added value for the profile of any student, since all university institutions in the world recognize these results, facilitating scholarships and admissions.

During their English Literature class, 10th grade read and analyzed fables. They used the inter-net, graphic organizers, and as a group we dis-

cussed the story line of various American fables, such as “The Wings of Orville” by E.B. White, several fables by Aesop, the famous Greek fabulist, like “The Tortoise and The Hare” and Anansi the spider which is the main character of the African-Caribbean Fables.

Students identified the characters in fables and their human personalities (all fables use animals as their main character) they learned when the rising and falling of a conflict happens and the most important students found the moral or message of each fable. Finally stu-dents wrote a fable of their own with all its elements and presented orally.

All of them were very good. I’m very proud of their work. Enclosed are only two among the best. Hope you like them as much as I did.

When Mrs. Duck arrived to her house, everything was gone. Mrs. Duck: OH NO! He took EVERYTHING! I shouldn’t have trusted him…

Mrs. Duck ran back to Ms. Squirrel’s house to tell her the news. -Mrs. Duck: Ms. Squirrel! Ms. Squirrel! He took everything! HE ROBBED ME! -Ms. Squirrel: The fox? -Mrs. Duck: Yes!-Ms. Squirrel: I told you, you had to be careful. You shouldn’t trust strangers.

New Horizons Santiago y New Horizons Santo Domingo celebró la XXVI Copa Amistad Lic. Reynaldo Garrido, un evento deportivo que

incluyó las disciplinas de volleyball, fútbol, basketball, tenis de mesa, ajedrez, judo, batminton y gimnasia Ar-tística. Participaron las categorías desde el año 2000 para grupos masculinos, femeninos y mixtos.

76 equipos deportivos de centros educativos y clubes, de Santo Domingo y Santiago, participan en la versión número 26 del torneo deportivo Copa Amistad.

New Horizons Bulldogs Santiago fue anfitrión de más de una decena de colegios invitados de Santiago, entre los que figuran San Juan Bautista, La Salle, Oasis Christian School, Saint David, O&M Hostos School e Intelecto. También se sumaron a esta competencia de-portiva el Colegio Calasanz, San Patrick y I Q Interna-tional School de Santo Domingo.

The New Horizons Pin BoardNEW HORIZONS WINS 11 AWARDS IN DEBATE TOURNAMENT AT HARVARD

The New Horizons delegation, consisting of students from its Santo Domingo and Santiago campuses, won 11 awards at the prestigious Debate Tournament at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, becoming the most outstan-ding team in Latin America.

After winning 50 rounds, five of our teams went through qualifying rounds in the prestigious tournament including one in public speaking.

These were the achievements of the delegation of the Debate team at Harvard 2018:• Team of youngest students to reach the quarterfinals in the Junior Varsity category.• Greatest number of rounds (54) by Dominican teams.• More teams in the elimination rounds of all schools worldwide in the International Division.• Greatest number of eighth-finals teams in the International Qualifiers Worldwide (5 of 16 teams).• School with the most teams in the quarterfinals in the International Qualifiers Worldwide (3 of 8 teams).• Delegation with more teams with high performance; 12 teams with 3 or more victories.

New Horizons has dominated the international division of the Harvard tournament for the past three years and since 2017 we are ranked first in the ranking of schools in the international division of the National Speech & Debate Association (NSDA), where five of our teams qualified in the finals, being one of the 16 teams of 900 to achieve this, a feat for the Dominican Re-public.

The Model United Nations represents the work real life ambassadors deal with in respect to the conflicts existing in the world. They are a mee-

ting point for delegates to work as a team and thus reach a beneficial solution for all nations. To do this, delegations must respect the policies of the assigned country and its position with respect to the given issue.

For the second consecutive year we celebrated our NHMUN, in which our principal, during the opening ce-remony, welcomed the participating delegates of the fo-llowing schools: Doulus Discovery Jarabacoa, La Salle Santiago, Garden Kids Sosúa, O & M Hostos Puerto Plata, Santiago Christian School, as well as our stu-dents; stimulating them to combine bonds of friendship and create connections that will last for a lifetime.

A group of volunteer students worked hard for months in the organization and planning of this very important event, offering all guests the best Model UN experien-ce.

Uno de los eventos más importantes que como colegio organizamos es nuestro tradicional Family Day, no solo por representar una sana actividad llena de diversión, sino porque se cul-tivan los valores y la integración familiar en tiempos donde se hacen tan necesarios.

Toda la comunidad New Horizons, incluyendo egresados, amigos y relacionados, disfrutó del progra-ma de actividades que incluyó el toro mecánico, caballos, el zip line, intercambios deportivos, juegos inflables, música, arte, y ecología y mucho más; para la sana diversión y esparcimiento de las familias. Igualmente, nuestra Asociación de Padres APANHS sorprendió a los presentes con la animación mu-sical durante todo el día, así como la presentación especial de un imitador de Daddy Yanky.

Cada año los estudiantes de 7mo grado participan del Rally Histórico-Cul-tural Lic. Norma Ferreiro el cual se realiza en la Zona Colonial de Santo Domingo. Este constituye una actividad para compartir entre alumnos,

padres/madres y profesores, un evento interesante y sobre todo educativo, en el que nuestros estudiantes tienen la oportunidad de aprender sobre nuestra historia y sus monumentos de una manera divertida. Les compartimos algunas imágenes de nuestros alumnos y sus familias.

El 20 de marzo se celebra el Día Internacional de la Francofonía, evento creado como una manera de que los 70 Estados y Go-biernos de la Organización Internacional de la Francofonía (OIF),

Arte, música, cultura, gastronomía, historia, y diferentes presentaciones fueron parte de los temas y actividades que durante toda una semana nuestros alumnos, desde 5to hasta 12mo grado, realizaron para el disfru-te de la comunidad escolar.

Every year, our Pre-school children participate in the hunt for Easter eggs, an old custom that began in northern Europe and has been exported to many countries. The activity consists of coloring eggs

and putting inside them a variety of sweets that constitute as a prize for our children.

Our yard was filled with joy when all the children went out to hunt Easter eggs, which were hidden in every corner and all around. In preparation for that day, the students made rabbit ears and their teachers painted their faces. At the end of the day each child received their Easter basket filled with sweets.

Fue uno de los líderes antirracistas más grandes de la historia quien, sin el uso de la violencia, fue capaz de inspirar a las personas la igualdad y respeto para la gente “de color” o afroamericanos. Su lucha contra la discriminación social se ha convertido en un

ejemplo de vida en todo el mundo.

Debido a su compromiso con la paz, la no violencia y la igualdad para todos, las protestas de Martin Luther King en favor de los derechos civiles fueron capaces de hacer verdadero pro-greso en la sociedad estadounidense y permitió a King a contribuir al éxito del movimiento de derechos civiles.

Luther King organizó y llevó a cabo diversas actividades pacíficas reclamando el derecho al voto, la no discriminación y otros derechos civiles básicos para la gente de raza negra de los Estados Unidos, la mayor parte de los cuales sería promulgada legalmente con la aprobación del Acta de los Derechos Civiles y el Acta de los derechos de votación. Además, King participó en protestas contra la Guerra del Vietnam y la pobreza en general.

Air pollution is understood as the presence in the air of materials or forms of energy that entail risk, damage or serious annoyance to people and goods of any natu-re, as well as being able to attack different materials, reduce visibility or produce

unpleasant odors. Since the Industrial Revolution began, in the second half of the eighteenth century, the production processes in the factories, the development of transport and the use of fuels have increased the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and other gases that are very harmful to health, such as sulfur oxides and nitrogen oxides.Atmospheric pollution can have a local character, when the effects linked to the focus are suffered in the vicinity of the same, or global, when the characteristics of the pollutant, the balance of the planet and remote areas to those containing the emitting sources are affected.

How Can We Help Prevent Air Pollution?It is time to do something, the Earth cannot wait anymore. The actions of prevention of air pollution must be contemplated by all, in any place and at every moment so that they really are effective.

Among them are:• Sharpen and maintains automobiles.• Drive less to reduce emissions.• Ride a bike, walk, use public transport and share your car with classmates and work.• Avoid burning garbage and tires, as well as the use of artificial rockets.• Do not buy disposable items and plastics that are not biodegradable.• Recycle garbage, reuse or pay for everything you can.• Do not throw garbage on the street, woods and parks, wrap it or cover it well at home.• Rationally use pesticides and fertilizers in your garden.• Avoid tobacco use.• Take care of the forests, do not do things that can cause fires or destroy the green areas of the city.• Decrease the use of cleaning products• Get rid of hazardous waste and chemicals in the proper way. Some of them are batteries, motor oil, puncture, solvents. Find the places where this type of waste is deposited.
