It was Friday afternoon and I had returned from a late lunch. The employees

had left for the day and I was alone in the office. Business had been dropping off

steadily for some time, and I was concerned. I had also put far too great a percentage

of my limited cash reserves into a risky investment that had been a failure. All in all,

things didn‟t look good; in fact, I was facing some of the most serious problems of

my business career.

As I was sitting deep in thought trying to resolve some of my problems, the

phone rang. Placing the receiver to my ear I was startled to hear the familiar voice of

an old friend. I could hardly believe my ears, for less than a month before he had left

for Europe on the urgent advice of his physician to get away somewhere, in the hope

that a change would cause an improvement in his condition, which was a serious

breakdown, due to worry over conditions which, strangely, were similar to what I was

now experiencing.

As he spoke, his voice carried such striking power and feeling that I was

reminded of my last impression of him. The day we sorrowfully parted he was a

miserable shadow of his former self, and I questioned whether I would ever see him

again.

I am master of my own destiny,

and I can make my life anything that I wish it to be.




But here he was back again, and surely some great change had taken place in

him. Remarking that a miracle must have happened, he assured me that I had guessed

about right, adding, “I know that you are puzzled over my early return and I also

know that you never expected to see me again. But I‟m back and I‟m the luckiest man

in the world, for I learned something that I never knew existed. “Nothing is

impossible with me anymore, for I can do anything. I am master of my own destiny

and I can make my life anything that I wish it to be.”

“Before you think I‟m crazy, wait until you hear my story.” Feigning a laugh to

cover my serious curiosity, I remarked that he must have stumbled on a new religion.

To which he replied, “On the contrary, it concerns no religion of any kind or of

anybody. You see, I met a Master. A wonderful man who has so developed his

powers that he can do anything, and he taught me a secret that no price could ever

buy. You know that I lost my health and I lost my wealth. Well, I have regained my

health and I will have the wealth in no time.” Of course I became excited to see him

at once and when we hung up he said, “Meet me at the club at 9:00 tonight and I will

unfold a series of the most remarkable and fortunate happenings that could fall to the

lot of any man.”

I sat there unmoved for some minutes like I was in a dream. Upon recovering

myself I became possessed of the feeling that there was something wonderful for me

in his story, I was seized with an uncontrollable desire to hear it at once. I went out

for a walk and turned in the direction of his office, but recalling that he was no longer

there, was forced to wait until evening. The remainder of that day was spent in

restlessly pacing the streets and I was greatly relieved when the hour to go to the club

arrived.

Having resolved to get him away where we would not be disturbed, I entered

and stepped quickly to the desk, only to be informed that he had telephoned some

time before to tell me that he had been called away and would be back the following

evening. Trying to conceal my feelings of disappointment, I turned quickly and was

greeted by three friends who had seen him, and each was excitedly trying to tell me of

the wonders that had taken place. Miserable and disheartened, I broke away from

them without uttering a word, walked out into the night and home.




Too agitated for sleep, the greater part of the night was passed in restless

confusion. Assailed by the most illogical thoughts, I decided that the whole thing was

a myth, conjured up in a mind weakened as the result of affliction. How utterly

ridiculous to allow myself to be taken in by such a fairy tale. But somehow the feeling

would not go away and kept forcing itself upon me. I tried to console myself with the

assurance that I would at any cost learn the truth of the whole matter the next day.




The next night he picked me up at my home in a new, high-priced car, and we

drove to the club. There, in a private dining room, undisturbed by the presence of

others, I had the opportunity to study my old friend.

Surely some miraculous change had taken place in him. His countenance glowed

with health and vitality. He was calm, poised and everything about him exuded

confidence. I felt perfectly at ease in his company, but I also felt the force of some

presence in him that I could neither understand nor describe. Whatever it was, it had

the effect of putting one at ease while at the same time commanding great respect. I

found it difficult to conceal the emotions that surged up within me, for I felt

convinced that he had something that I sorely needed and I had the strangest fear that

something might occur that would prevent my getting it.

He broke our silence and asked, “Do I look any different than the day I left?” I

had to admit that he was both a revelation and a mystery to me. I asked him what had

but we disregard them, because of our lack of understanding,

happened and he said, “I was at a theatre in London when I met the man, or the

Master, as he is called, that I am now deeply grateful to be able to call my friend.

When I left here I was ready to end it all, I had made such a mess of my affairs. But I

feared to live and I feared to die. I couldn‟t rest. To keep moving was my only relief. I

guess I was what the world would call a hopeless case.”

“As I look back upon that evening in London, I now realize that my utter

despondency and intense longing to find something to relieve me drew me and my

dear friend together. I had thought my ticket was for a regular orchestra seat, but

discovered that for some unexplainable reason I received a box seat and found myself

seated beside my friend. Extraordinary happenings, such as this, occur frequently to

many of us and are explained away, because of our ignorance, as merely coincidences.

But I know differently now.”

“As we sat there, I could feel that my uneasiness attracted his attention. There

was a wonderful radiance about him and I felt an instinctive urge to open my heart to

him. Something seemed to tell me that I had the good fortune of being in the

presence of one of a great, spiritual person.”

“At the close of the performance I was overjoyed at his invitation to accompany

him to a nearby café. When we arrived, I noticed that the attention of those in the

café was drawn toward him as we entered and that the management was noticeably

respectful and courteous toward him. Having convinced myself that this man

possessed some sort of magical power, I determined to ask him all the questions that I

could think of and with his permission make notes of his answers.”

“When he told me that he was boarding a steamer for New York the next day, I

asked if I might accompany him, and he agreed. At the conclusion of our talk he

merely wrote his initials on the bill. I asked him if he frequented that cafe and he told

me this was his first visit to there. He smiled and assured me that they would be paid,

adding, „I did this to show you that man in his right domain controls every situation.‟ I

was still puzzled, but carried the subject no further, hoping that it would all be made

plain to me later.”




“That night, as I lay in bed, the events of the evening kept passing through my

mind and at times I found it difficult to believe that my good fortune was real. That

night I had the first peaceful sleep in months.”




“The following morning, up early and supremely happy and eager for what the

day would unfold, I immediately applied for a reservation on the steamer, only to be

informed that they had a full passenger list, I turned away, heartbroken and couldn‟t

believe my ears when the clerk called out to me telling me that a reservation had just

been cancelled and that it was mine if I wanted it. Instantly I felt forcibly struck with

the thought that here was more of my friend‟s „magic,‟ as I then called it, and I was

not mistaken, for he later admitted that he had made a place for me.”

“Right at that moment my friend arrived, surrounded by attendants eager to be

of service and assistance.”

“The first evening, I visited him in his luxuriously-furnished stateroom. He

explained the wonderful forces that man has permitted to lie dormant within him and

he gave me several demonstrations of the powers that he has developed. He did

things that were actually astounding. After these demonstrations, he asked, „Why

cannot you do what I do? Why cannot all do as I do? I have no powers that you are

not endowed with. The only difference between you and I is that I have knowledge of

Universal Law and I have developed the powers within me, while you, have been

there is but one power. This is self-evident, as you shall see.‟

“Continuing, he said: „the great masses of humanity are using the Law

destructively or partially so, and the scales are balanced against them. Here and there,

among the masses, we find an occasional outstanding figure who has achieved

greatness or success and he is erroneously singled out as lucky or as a genius, when

the fact is that he has made use of the Law – either knowingly or unknowingly – and

this use of the Law has balanced things in his favor. How plain this is to the one who

knows.‟

„Before man discovered electricity, it was a great force lying dormant throughout

the universe. To use the great power of electricity, first he had to discover it. It is

exactly the same with the Universal Law.

„Happiness is man‟s rightful heritage. The very soul of man cries out for

happiness, but he misinterprets it in terms of money. Why? Because money is but a

means to an end. It is the motivating power which drives us on in our quest for the

ultimate, which is happiness. In this world, it is true that there cannot be happiness

without a certain amount of money. Therefore the occupation of acquiring money is a

worthy and commendable one.‟

„Why then do so many suffer all sorts of lack, misery and unhappiness? When

you think about it, it is ridiculous for anyone (no matter what their station is in life), to

believe that it is their destiny to lack anything that will contribute to his happiness or

that of his family.‟

„Somebody discovers the law governing the use of electricity and we have radio.

Millions of people are now enjoying its advantages. They tune in to what they want

and they get it. There is a great lesson in this, for believe me, you can have anything

you want and in great abundance, when you learn to tune in to the power within, an

infinitely greater power than electricity, that you have had from birth.‟

„The captain of this ship could just as easily own it as run it. One position is no

more difficult to attain than the other. He tuned in to the captaincy successfully.

Ownership was a little more distant and he did not try for distance. That is the only




difference. The actual difference in the two positions is merely the difference in two

words. Nothing more, as you shall see very plainly when we get a little further along.‟

“Each night, after retiring to my room, I would sit up until early morning

reading my notes from the day and preparing questions for the next. He told me that I

was very „receptive‟ because of my eagerness, sincerity and trust, and that it was a

pleasure to instruct me. And in gratitude I acknowledged that no price was too high

or sacrifice too great in return for such knowledge.”

“One day I asked him when and how he discovered such a secret and he

responded, „I discovered nothing and to me it is no secret. This knowledge has been

in our family as far back as our records go. I use it because I know it to be the easy,

certain way of accomplishing a purpose. Up until now, like most other people, you

have only known the difficult, uncertain way.‟ He seemed never to want to take credit

for anything, always claiming that no credit was due him.”




“I was rapidly regaining my health and strength and was becoming fired with an

irresistible ambition to get back and start all over again. I realized I had wasted many

valuable years in my old way, and I was eager to start again in this new way.”

“As we reached the end of our voyage I was filled with the feeling that I was

soon to part from my great benefactor, to whom I had become greatly attached and

to whom I owed so much. I handed him my card and asked for his, to which he

replied, „I have no card, no name, no address. I am like the wind. I come from

nowhere and I go everywhere. As for my name, you may call me Friend.‟ I said that I

would much prefer to call him Master, he replied, „No, no, not Master. Just Friend.

That will do.‟ Glancing at my card, he said, „I turn up at the most unexpected places. I

might be out to see you soon. If I do, I will write to you.‟

“As we said goodbye, I felt like a child leaving their parent. I will never forget

the parting instructions that he gave me, „You are indeed a fortunate man. Just think

of the millions of gifted, highly talented people, who are blessed with great abilities for

success and leadership, and whose successes would mean so much to so many and yet

they do not know what you know. They go on striving and straining, wasting their

precious life force, only to find themselves dissatisfied, discouraged, disheartened,

crushed, as you once were. They may be spurred on by that divine spark, that

irresistible urge that tells them that there is a way but it eludes them and they live year

after year burdened by lack and failure.‟

„You can avoid all of this! Go home. You have learned all that you will need. If

you diligently follow the instructions that I have given, you may reach any heights.

You may accomplish any worthy purpose easily and quickly. There is no limit to your

possibilities. Your successes will multiply and increase in proportion to your mastery

of the Law. With each success your faith in the Law will grow stronger until you reach

the point of complete conviction and then you will be truly invincible.‟

„Bear in mind the warning that I have given you. Reveal nothing of this to even

your dearest friend. To do so before you are powerfully fortified in the Law will only

interfere with your plans, scatter your forces and consequently weaken their power for

your good. So, keep your secret securely locked within your heart. You will never be

able to work out another‟s problems. Neither will another be able to work out yours.

This is strictly a matter for each individual. Accomplishment of any kind, in any line,

is the result of the operation of this inner force, discovered and set to work, and this

must be done by each one for himself. There is no other way.‟

„Without doubt, you will have great successes in all of your life, in every way you

wish. The time will come when you can retire from your material pursuits and devote

yourself to helping others become free from the bondage of want, misery and

unhappiness.‟

“With those final words spoken, my friend entered a taxi with his servant and

gave directions to this hotel, I started down the street unconscious of the crowds

around me, filled with such a peculiar sensation of exaltation and buoyancy that I

seemed to be floating along rather than walking.”

“On the train home I carefully avoided all unnecessary contact with my fellow

passengers. I wanted to be alone and to think. I could not think of sparing any of my




precious time for worthless, idle conversation and gossip. How useless it seemed to

me now, when there was so compelling a purpose to try out my new teaching and not

another day could be wasted. Nothing else interested me and nothing else mattered.”

“And that, my friend, is as much of my story as I am at liberty to reveal at this

time. I have told you all of this in the hope that it will encourage you to discover this

life, once you are fully aware that there are solutions and possibilities available to

5) The Law of Decision states that within every challenge and period of

your life, once you have decided to have complete faith and made that leap, then

the source of all solutions and opportunities will be made available and visible to

out‟ old beliefs and opinions in order to make yourself ready to take full

8) The Law of Outpicturing states that what manifests in our outer world

is created first in our inner world. Most often we are taught or believe the

process to be the exact opposite, but here is the truth, when you harness the true

power of outpicturing, you will discover that you can manifest your desires in

your outer world – but to do so, you must start within.

9) The Law of Release states that in order to realize the full power of the

Universal Law, you must release your attachment to the physical and realize that

the fixed picture in your mind – when connected to emotions – is the actual

thing itself.




10) The Law of One Mind states that there is but one mind as there is but

one electricity. The many minds that are sometimes referred to are merely

expressions of the one mind as every wall outlet is merely an expression or

access point to electricity.

11) The Law of Objective states that to tap into the full power of the

Universal Law, you must have a set, definite objective. With this set, definite

objective – the inner and outer mind can immediately align to manifest that

objective.

12) The Law of Secrecy states that harnessing the full power of the

Universal Law requires secrecy. When your objective is expressed too early, too

soon – the energy and force behind your objective dissipates. Secrecy throws the

full power of Universal Law behind your objective as your inner mind seeks to

out-picture that objective as quickly and powerfully as possible.

13) The Law of Reserve states that continued, powerful use of the Law is

only possible when you consistently replenish your life force and nourish your

spirit and energy. Outpicturing your set, definite objectives requires consistent

focus of your life energy and therefore you must replenish that energy

consistently. When you do, there is no limit to what you can master and

manifest.

14) The Law of Nourishment states that to keep your life force

nourished is as simple as a few, powerful words that when used in specific,

nightly practice will feed your energy and replenish your life force.

15) The Law of Resistance states that whenever you put your life force

toward manifesting a set, definite objective – you will meet with resistance.

Contrary to popular belief, resistance actually helps you in mastering the

Universal Law.

16) The Law of Mastery states that you truly are the master of your mind

and life force – continue to work with the sub-laws and the power of your

mastery will become unlimited.

The Law of Ignorance states that there is a time within any

challenge or period of your life when you will be ignorant to

the solutions and possibilities available to you, and just

because you are not aware of a solution or possibility, doesn‟t

mean there isn‟t one.

Have you ever been struggling with an issue and found yourself at what

seemed like the very edge of hopelessness? Maybe you worried about your




finances or about something going on at work. We‟ve all faced struggles with

uncertainty, or worry, born out of fear of the unknown.

Sometimes the things we worry about take up so much of our focus that our dis-

ease and dis-comfort begin to manifest physically. Let‟s face it: stressful thoughts

cause stressed out physical and mental conditions. We can worry ourselves right into

the hospital if we‟re not careful.

Just as there can be great fear in not knowing, there can be great excitement in

the promise of new possibilities. Our current state of mind has created our current

life conditions. If we‟re experiencing abundance, that‟s in direct correlation to the

thoughts we hold about our prosperity. If we‟re experiencing turmoil, it‟s because the

thoughts and beliefs we hold are tumultuous. The one absolute thing we can know is

that our conditions are only temporary, no matter what they are. Every moment

holds unlimited possibilities – whether you are aware of them or not.

At any moment, you can alter your thoughts about a situation, and completely

change the outcome. Doing so allows for infinite possibilities to unfold. The

Universe is constantly conspiring to bring into your existence that which you focus

on. If your focus is on how bad things are, you are inviting more experiences into

your existence to feel bad about. It simply takes one small shift in your focus and

emotion to allow for what you truly desire to unfold in front of you. You do not have

to know the outcome of any given situation - you only need to know that each

situation holds limitless potential.

Right at the very moment that the narrator of the story was

struggling, he was interrupted by a call from someone

important in his life, someone who had experienced many of

the same struggles. Was this coincidence or divine

intervention?

The perception our narrator held of his friend was

immediately challenged, because his friend had experienced

such a transformation. His vitality and enthusiasm for life

was so strong, that the narrator was immediately impacted,

spiritually and physically.

The intense stress that the long lost friend had been under

was most likely the very reason he experienced the decline in

his health. Remember, our feelings manifest into physical

conditions. Once the friend changed his emotional state, his

health improved.

When we embrace that we are masters of our own destiny,

we can begin to understand our own power.

When amazing things take place, sometimes we find them so

amazing, that we try to dismiss them as too-good-to-be-true,

rather than accepting that every moment holds infinite

possibilities.




Exercise:

Think of a time when you were struggling over an issue. Perhaps you were

worried about your finances, or about the outcome of a situation at work.

How did these concerns make you feel physically?
