THE RELAXATION RESPONSE

• Benson believes that the brain's ability to create visual images, and to treat those images as real, may lie at the center of a type of mind-body healing. "You are wired in your brain to know what it is to experience feeling well. You can reconstitute that image," says Benson, who has labeled this process "remembered wellness."

• After years of struggling against prevailing scientific wisdom, Benson's research is finally being embraced by many in the medical establishment. In the fall, a National Institutes of Health Technology Assessment conference encouraged the acceptance of behavioral and relaxation therapies for treating chronic pain and insomnia.

From: Misia Landau, “Quad” @Harvard.eduHerbert Benson, MD

"The relaxation response is not a

technique. It's a physiological state

brought about by many techniques."-- Herbert Benson

BIOFEDBACK

• Yale psychologist Neal Miller,

PhD, demonstrated 1961 that the

autonomic nervous system that

was presumably not influence-

able by the mind, was indeed

entirely trainable!

• Changes through “Instrumental

Learning” occurred only within

range of homeostasis (i.e.: what

is good for the whole organism).

Neal Miller, PhD

PSYCHONEUROIMMUNOLOGY

Robert Ader, Ph.D., M.D. (h.c.)

• The term psychoneuroimmunology was coined by Robert

Ader, a researcher in the Department of Psychiatry at the

University of Rochester, NY.

• PNI studies the connection between the brain and the

immune system.

• It opened up new understandings of how experiences

such as stress and anxiety can affect a person's immune

system.

• Ader performed experiments on lab rats, which showed

that environmental factors could impact the immune

system. (“Conditioned” Immune shut down learned in rats

using Sugar water & Cytoxan).

• Ader's work went against accepted scientific knowledge,

which held that the immune system was not related to

other bodily systems, and had no way to physically interact

with the nervous system.

THE MIND-BODY CONNECTION

IN ACTION

Modern Mind-Body Medicine

Since the 1970s the term psychosomatics has been replaced by more modern names such as:

• Psychoneuroimmunology

• Holistic Medicine

• Mind-Body Medicine

• Functional Medicine

• Integrated Medicine

All terms are indicating an inclusion of the central influence of the psyche of the patient in interaction with his/her social environment in the disease process, and a systemic/holographic understanding of the biological processes in the person’s body.

STRESSES & OBSTACLES TO CURE

Dr. Ralph Wilson, ND

Culture & BiologyEnculturation & Aculturation

• “Culture” is a powerful state of mind and a particular set of beliefs and behaviors that is heavily linked to our survival as species.

• In a thousand little daily acts we constantly and non-consciously oblige the “Cultural Imperative”.

• We can’t escape this imperative!

• The demands of one’s culture often clash with the demands of one’s innate biology.

• The result can be internal conflict, psychosomatic stress and emotional tension.

Biopsychosocial Medicine

Based on George Engel, MD

Beyond Psychosomatics• Starting in the1960’s the organ-specific psychoanalytic

theories of “Orthodox” Psychosomatics gave way to simpler and/or more holistic models of understanding illness.

• Illness is now understood as a systemic dysfunction communication networks resulting in a dys-regulation of stress systems in the body that affect the regulation of the autonomic nervous system (hypo & hyper arousal), immune system and endocrine system of a person.

• The fields of research are grouped around the disciplines of Psychoneuroimmunology, psychoendocrinology, developmental psychology and the new brain sciences.

Based on Allan Schore(Affect Regulation and the Origin of the Self p. 433.)

THE 8 STEPS

Core Energetics as an Approach to Psychosomatic Illness(Based on Ken Goldberg, M.D.)

1) Register impressions: Look how tissues are disconnected from surrounding and support structure

2) Evaluate: How has the person organized his or her sense of self (Extended chracterology)

3) Assess Choice: Blocks or No-current

4) Grounding Bodywork: Bring awareness & energy to the tissue

5) Energizing Bodywork: deeper and fasterheld back impulsesarousal in autonomic nervous system (rhythmic movement: = kicking)cognitive (lower),experience (higher), feelings (higher),being (higher)Charge the system (Froehlich condensate: “pumped system”)

Breathing<Circulation<Cells pumping

6) Help the person find the NO-current ….Go to the YES pattern (choice)

7) Give up identification with the No-current: Choose YES!

8) Establish new pattern = make conscious space for YES! (Live in the Higher self, prayer, meditation, CULTIVATE POSITIVE THOUGHTS, etc.)

WE are responsible for healing this planet!

One person at a time.
