New Ladderswood Estate Regeneration

On 14th February 2014 the Planning Authority granted full planning permission for the Ladderswood Project. Construction started on the 17th March 2014 to the site of the former public house ‘The Sir John Lawrence’, the first phase of the re-development to regenerate the area. This first phase will provide 40 new homes of which 23 will be affordable and 17 for private sale and is expected to be completed by autumn 2015.

Enfield Council also achieved vacant possession of Curtis House on 26th August 2014. Mullaley are currently progressing on getting a programme together for demolition. This is programmed to happen in early January.

New Ladderswood LLP will be creating employment and training opportunities throughout the construction period, providing skills support and training programmes for residents and local people.

Mulalley has engaged the talents of a local resident, Max Massey, through their Construction Management Trainee Scheme. The successful scheme, which has been running for many years, is aimed at individuals who would like a career in construction. Max joined Mulalley in September 2014 and hopes to become a Quantity Surveyor when he graduates. He has a great support network at Mulalley including a personal mentor.

The Council and the Millennium Green Trust worked in partnership with the National Citizen Service (NCS) through the Challenge Network on 7th September 2014, as part of the Take the High Road project enhancements for the Millennium Green. The volunteer event had over 50 volunteers aged 16-17years, 3 Duke of Edinburgh participants, Millennium Green Trustees and Council staff installing a woodchip pathway around the children’s mosaic and building a willow fence along the Nettle walkway. A huge thank you to all the participants that took part!

Garfield Primary is celebrating some of its best ever SATS results. 89% of year six pupils achieved level 4 or above in maths and 87% achieved this level in writing and reading. These results continue the huge improvements the school has made in the last three years and they put Garfield above the national average for most subjects. This success really shows the commitment of both the pupils and the staff to making Garfield one of the best schools in Enfield.

Meanwhile work continues on constructing Garfield’s exciting new school building. The site has been cleared and foundation works are well underway. The building work is next door to the existing school site, so that the children’s learning will not be disrupted this year.

The Reception and Nursery children have a wonderful vantage point to view the construction as it takes shape, as windows have been designed in the safety fence to allow the children to regularly check on the progress of the building. Perfect for those children who love to see a bulldozer or a digger! It is anticipated that the new building will be completed by September 2015, ready for the beginning of the next school year.

Garfield Primary School success

Garfield School Expansion building updateAfter a successful summer, the enabling works on site at Garfield Primary School are now complete. These works included connecting new utilities to the buildings and erecting a hoarding to separate the construction from the existing building.Phase 1 works are now well underway and are being undertaken by J Murphy & Sons LTD. So far we have seen the demolition of the old caretaker’s house and car park, and work on levelling the site. Planned works for the immediate future include work on the foundations for the Main Hall building along with the formation of the new vehicular entrance to the school on Palmers Road.Alongside this, work is continuing on the detailed design for the modular building, which is being completed by Elliots (modular building contractor). At present, delivery of the modular units is expected during December/January. Local residents will receive further information regarding this.

Progress Report on the mid-20th Century Garfield School Pupils & Past Residents of New Southgate. The Garfield Society had a successful 5th consecutive Annual Reunion at the Conservative Club, High Rd, N11 on 9th August 2014 with 35 keen members travelling many miles to attend another friendly reunion. There were extra display boards of new photos and souvenirs found by members, and socialising was particularly strong with some members who went to Garfield in the late 1930s and early 1940s. At least two male pupils were able to greet and chat to female pupils not seen for 70 years! Currently two of the group members are finishing one of three new books of New Southgate memories, this one on Garfield School up to its demolition in 1973. The book includes new information on pupils, teachers, buildings and classroom layouts, and also describes with photos many leisure time pursuits linked to the school, including soccer teams and school visits to the outside attractions available in the post war years. Two more similar books are planned for early 2015, one on local People & Families, and one on Places and Landmarks of New Southgate. All three books will be well illustrated with contemporary photos improved to a better quality, and there are important selections from the personal histories of local families and businesses. The likely price of these A4 spiral bound booklets will be in the range of £5 to £7 depending on postage costs, and will be about 50 to 70 pages long with a similar number of old photos and illustrations. 2015 may see an appeal for family photos and memories that can be collected for preservation and presentation to others. These will give interest to past, current and future residents, family members and scholars interested in discovering how New

Southgate lived and thrived in the mid-20th Century. Their members lived locally before it was extensively re-developed. Any photos, relics or information materials are welcome, especially if they contain images of past buildings, events and other fellow residents. Anyone interested in more information can get in touch directly with Peter Turner on [email protected] or ring 01538 371331. Next year the Garfield Society hope to provide a long term email address so this collection of disappearing material is not lost for ever.

Discover the New Southgate Heritage Trail

Enfield Local Studies Library has recently published a guided walk around the central part of New Southgate. It starts at New Southgate Railway Station and finishes at the Grade 2 listed library and swimming pool, near Arnos Grove Station. It gives information on the interesting buildings and areas at various points along the route, plus those now gone. The guide opens out to show a large map of the trail, and there is also a QR (Quick Response) code on it, which can be scanned with a smartphone to take you to a page on the Enfield Borough website which has old photos of some of the areas mentioned in the walk.Copies of the walk are free and available in Local Studies at the Dugdale Centre and libraries. Why not take one and enjoy discovering some of the hidden history of New Southgate?
