INFRARED THERMOMETERS

3 key points to consider when choosing your infrared thermometer.1. EmissivityThe ratio of energy radiated from a material’s surface

compared to that radiated from a blackbody under

the same conditions. It is a dimensionless number

between 0 and 1. The emissivity of a surface depends

on the material and the nature of the surface. For

example, a clean and polished metal surface will have

a low emissivity, whereas a roughened and oxidised

metal surface will have a higher emissivity.

2. Distance:Spot ratioActual area measured compared to distance from

thermometer. For example D:S 4:1, has a distance

to item of 300mm providing sample area of 75mm Ø.

3. Focal lengthThe optimum distance between infrared thermometer

and sample area for most accurate reading.

Checking the accuracy of all your infrared thermometers against a calibrated reference thermometer.

Using a thermometer of known accuracy (reference

thermometer), insert probe into base port and leave

in situ until thermometer display is absolutely stable.

Hold infrared thermometer immediately over the

mouth of the comparator tube and beam on to the

base section. Compare the readings for the two

instruments and the diff erence (if any) indicates the

accuracy drift of the infrared thermometer. In addition,

working probe thermometers can be checked against

a unit of known accuracy.
