THE NEWS FLASH EST 2011 ADVICE FROM THE EDITOR How to get into your mum’s good books There are many ways to get into your mum’s good books, and if you do, she will definitely favour you over your most hated brother or sister. If you get into her good books, she will always believe what you say, so you can tell on your sister or brother and your mum will believe you. Firstly, you have to do whatever your mum tells you. If you do this, you will build up trust with her, which is definitely a good thing to have. If she tells you to empty the dishwasher or bring in the clothes from the clothes line, you have to do it straight away. Secondly, you need to help her out before she asks. If you can see that she is stressing and she needs some help, you need to automatically empty the dishwasher to help her. Thirdly, BE GOOD AT SCHOOL. If you get good marks at school and never get into trouble, your mum won’t tell you this, but she will secretly love you more than your brothers and sisters. Overall, if you do all of these things, not only will you be your mum’s new best child, you will also get onto Santa’s good list, so maybe when Christmas comes you will even bigger presents than your siblings! LETTERS FROM THE READERS I am a daily reader of The News Flash and I just wanted to congratulate you on a superb paper from yesterday. I especially enjoyed the article about how the Bombers season could shape up with James Hird as coach. I agreed with your opinions about the Bombers soaring in the first few rounds, but then falling back to earth as the season goes on. I don’t think that Hird will make a difference at all, so I predict that they’ll finish a disappointing 12 th . Mark, Bendigo, VIC Thank you, very much appreciated. I think that Bomber Thompson will end up taking the coaching job after Hird struggles. Editor I have been a long time reader of the News Flash and I love receiving the paper every morning, but I was absolutely disgusted by your predictions for the 2011 AFL season. One of your columnists thought that Collingwood would finish in 5 th , and Gold Coast would finish 11 th ! Collingwood is by far the favourite for the flag this year, and Gold Coast has shown no signs of winning a game! I hope that you can pick up your form by realising that I am correct when you see that Collingwood will thump West Coast and Gold Coast will get smashed by their opponent. Jason, Camberwell, VIC Yes, I was a bit surprised when I went through yesterday’s paper to see that. I am sorry that that disappointed you and I hope that when the season ends, you can call up Michael Goldsmith, who was our columnist, and get stuck into him. Editor

ADVICE FROM THE EDITOR

How to get into your mum’s good books

There are many ways to get into your mum’s good books, and if you do, she will definitely favour you over your most hated brother or sister.

LETTERS FROM THE READERS

I am a daily reader of The News Flash and I just wanted to congratulate you on a superb paper from yesterday. I especially enjoyed the article about how the Bombers season could shape up with James Hird as coach. I agreed with your opinions about the Bombers soaring in the first few rounds, but then falling back to earth as the season goes on. I don’t think that Hird will make a difference at all, so I predict that they’ll finish a disappointing 12th. Mark, Bendigo, VIC Thank you, very much appreciated. INTERNATIONAL ISSUE The wait to see if the Al Qaida terrorist group retaliates is still a massive question. About a month ago Osama bin Laden, the mastermind behind the terrorist attacks in New York, was killed in his home in Abottabad, 60km outside the capital of Pakistan, Istanbul. He was gunned down by US forces in his million dollar compound. Multiple US spies had seen Osama’s courier roaming in and out of the house, so they were very sure that he would be in there. They flew in by helicopter and raided the house one room by another. They eventually found him and he evaded capture,

but he got shot in his left eye before he could run away. This has made America extremely happy because the most wanted man in the world is dead, but he hasn’t caused any disasters in five to ten years, so he probably wasn’t going to do anything else. This has also hit Al Qaida very hard because he was their main leader, so there is a very big chance that they are going to retaliate and try and hit America back very hard using lethal forces. America is also very anxious to see if Al Qaida has the power to hit back. If they do, it could start a very big war between the two forces. Although Osama bin Laden was the mastermind behind the 9/11 attacks and the main leader in Al Qaida, he hasn’t performed or ordered any attacks on any countries or places since the 9/11, so even though it’s a massive relief he’s gone, he wasn’t causing any disaster to anyone. But in saying that, I think the whole world would rather him dead than alive. Osama bin Laden also caused many other terrorist attacks in many different countries, but the 9/11 bombings were the largest one. Osama’s reasoning behind his terrorism was because he and the Al Qaida gang hate the western world (developed countries). He grew up learning to hate westerners, and to the day he died he hated them. He grew up around the Pakistani/Afghan culture, so he has always lived in a pretty poor state. Overall, the death of Osama bin Laden has lead to many pros and a few cons. The Pakistani people are a bit half-hearted about his death because half of them loved him and half hated him because many people in Pakistan and around that area hate Westerners. But the obvious pros are that he is dead and he can’t strategise any more terrorist attacks with Al Qaida. Even though Osama is dead, Al Qaida is still at full power and capable of mass destruction of any place at any time, and that’s the reason why the whole world is anxious to see what happens in the next few years.

NATIONAL ISSUE An issue in Australia at the moment is the debate about whether the Carbon Tax should be enforced or not. The Carbon Tax is a tax that would be brought onto many of the big carbon dioxide producers. It would tax the industrial carbon dioxide producers for emitting too much carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. There is a massive debate going on in Parliament at the moment about the tax because there are many pros and cons about it. A pro is that it would greatly reduce the amount of carbon emissions being emitted into the atmosphere. But on the other hand, the tax would force the prices of coal to soar because of the prices the industries would have to pay to emit carbon emissions into the air. This could make foreign countries find an alternative option to buying coal from Australia. Although the Australian government would make massive profits from the carbon tax, they would also lose a lot of money from foreign countries not buying our resources. Another issue is the price on which the industries would have to pay for emitting carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, and because the Green Party is on the Labor government’s side, they will have to negotiate a price on which to charge. The Greens would want to pay a very high price for it because they are an environmental party. But they have to keep in mind that the higher the price, the higher the risk as well. Overall, the carbon tax that could be enforced by the Australian government on the big industrial polluters is a great idea but it has many side effects to it.

LOCAL

The South Camberwell Tennis Club is now under construction with a budget of $400,000. The project is going to add a store room, build unisex and disabled toilets, refurbish the main room, add a disabled ramp on the western side of the building, and there is also going to be energy efficient installations. How much do you think this construction will cost? Maybe 100k, maybe 200k, maybe 300k or maybe more. A lot of people love this attraction and the club’s main focus is on the tennis played at the venue. The club also plans to add a disabled tennis facility which means

more people will be able to enjoy tennis. Will $400,000 be enough? We can’t know because we don’t know how much these facilities will cost. Do we need this upgrade, or can we live without it? The additions are worth it and were well needed for most people. After the planned construction, the extension should be environmentally friendly and disabled friendly. Also, with a new pavilion on its way, the old one won’t look so broken down and uncared for. The new storeroom that will be built is great because people will be able to store their valuables and tennis gear in there. With all of these new facilities and extensions, the renovation will definitely be worth it, but the question is will all of the money spent on it go to a good cause, or is there another alternative? We will soon find out.

SPORTS REPORT

At the conclusion of Round 9 in the AFL Geelong remain on top of the ladder with a 61-point win over Gold Coast at Carrara Stadium on Saturday. Gold Coast showed promising signs of what’s to come in the future when they lead the Cats by 10 points at the half-time break. But in the second-half the Cats blitzed away, eventually winning by over 10 goals. The best players on the ground were Steve Johnson with 7 goals, James Kelly with 30 possessions and Gary Ablett picked up 30 touches.

On Friday night, Carlton beat Melbourne by 47 points to remain in 4th position on the ladder. The Blues lead at all changes to comfortably record their 6th win of the season. The game was very boring to watch as the game was played at a very low standard. The Demons do have excuses for their poor performance though, as they have 5 of their best 10 players out with either suspension or injury. The best players were Chris Judd and Marc Murphy with 31 disposals and for Melbourne Joel MacDonald had 23 touches On Saturday afternoon, St Kilda beat Fremantle by 46 points at Pattersons Stadium. St Kilda led at every change to come with a very satisfying win. St Kilda had only won 2 games before this one, and were sitting way outside the top 8 on the ladder. With that win they advance a few spots and now have the top 8 in sight. St Kilda played a consistent 4 quarter performance with Nick Dal Santo picking up 30 possessions and Adam Schneider kicking 4 goals. At the Docklands in front of 24,000 fans, Sydney continued their rivalry with North Melbourne after a 1 point thrilling win on Saturday afternoon. The Kangaroos led at quarter time by 10 and at half time by 2, but Sydney took the 4 point advantage going into the last. The game was consistently close the whole game, but Sydney managed to sneak home after a Kangaroos quick kick out of the pack towards goal with seconds left hit the behind post. Sydney then won the clearance and chipped the ball around until the siren sounded. The standouts were Tadhg Kennelly with 27 disposals and Ben McGlynn with 3 goals. On Saturday night in front of 11,000 fans at Marrara Oval for the annual Darwin game, Richmond fought it out against Port Adelaide in a low standard game. Although Richmond looked comfortable with the 9 point lead at half time, Port Adelaide lifted their spirits and came out hard in the second half to record only their 2nd win of the season. Richmond came into this game hot favourite to win after last week’s upset win over Essendon, but they weren’t turned on this week, and consequently dropped out of the top 8 on the ladder. The best players were Robbie Gray with 4 goals for Port Adelaide and Nathan Foley for Richmond with a game-high 24 touches. At AAMI Stadium in front of 34.000 fans on Sunday afternoon Adelaide played the Brisbane Lions in the only non-Victorian game of the week. After a slow start, Brisbane picked up the pace in the second term, kicking 5 goals to 2. They also dominated the third and fourth quarters, kicking a total of 9 goals to 3 in the second half. Adelaide were the favourite to win coming into this game, and seen as they had their home fans cheering for them, they definitely should have won that game. Scott Thompson and Richard

Page 6: The News Flash

Douglas provided consistent 4-quarter performances for the Crows with 36 and 33 possessions respectively, but it wasn’t enough to resist the Lions as they stormed home to win their 2nd game of the year. Brisbane currently sits in 15th spot and Adelaide in 13th, so the standard of the game wasn’t too high, but it was a very enjoyable game to watch. In front of 52,000 fans at the MCG on Sunday afternoon, Collingwood hosted West Coast in what was last year’s wooden spooners and Premiers. West Coast proved competitive in the first couple of minutes, scoring the first goal from a beautiful piece of play. But from then on Collingwood proved unstoppable, piling on goal after goal. By half time they were up by 27, and they didn’t look back, eventually winning by 52. Collingwood scored lots of goals from their rebounding from 50. They would always attack the wing and then bring it back into the middle in their attacking 50, with either Travis Cloke or Chris Dawes taking a contested mark on hit by a pass on the lead, or there would be a contest and the rovers, namely Andrew Krakouer and Steele Sidebottom, would win the ball and kick a goal. The best players on the ground were Scott Pendlebury with 31 possessions and Matt Priddis with 32 touches. On Sunday afternoon at Etihad Stadium in front of 30,474 fans Hawthorn triumphed over the Western Bulldogs by 29 points. Hawthorn hit the front early on with a few quick goals and looked in control throughout the game, leading at every change. The first half set the game up for Hawthorn, kicking 8 goals to just 3. The second half was very even with the Bulldogs scoring one more goal than Hawthorn, but they never threatened to win the game. The loss for the Bulldogs puts them in 12th position, and with just 3 wins on the board so far makes them look very doubtful to play in the finals. The Hawks on the other hand have won 7 and are currently in 3rd spot, with only Geelong and Collingwood ahead of them. The standouts in this game were Brent Guerra and Luke Hodge with 35 and 33 possessions.

Hangover 2 - A rebirth of the first Hangover movie, but even better and with a twisted storyline

and hilarious visauls. Hangover 2 is a 9/10

Pirates of the Caribbean 4 - Pirates of the Caribbean is okay, but not the best movie ever

because the story and the characters in the movie aren’t great. I rate it a 7/10

TV REVIEW

Angry Boys: Angry Boys is a funny show with a lot of twists and turns. It is not

appropriate for people under 15 years of age because it has a lot of swearing and a lot

of politically incorrect stuff. I rate it 7/10

Modern Family: This is an epic show and is funny and witty for every age.

There has been nothing bad about this program and is currently at the top of the top TV

shows list. I rate this 10/10

Big Bang Theory: The Big Bang Theory is about four nerds surviving their daily life. It’s mostly about their life style and them going through life. It is a funny show so I rate it 7/10
