The Rockdale County Branch of the NAACP celebrated the 27th annual Freedom Fund Banquet scholarship fundraiser, themed “Education is the Key to a Successful Future,” on March 21 in a packed room at the Ga. Inter-national Horse Park. Former Rockdale NAACP President Willie Gibson was surprised the Award for Excellence for his many years of service. Lily of the Valley Pastor T. R. Collins, a long serving member of the Rockdale branch, was recognized with a Community Service award. U.S. Congressman Hank Johnson was recognized with the Jean Williams Community Spirit Award. Keynote speaker Ga. NAACP President the Rev. Dr. Francys Johnson warned about the deterioration of community ties due to greed and individualism and urged lead-ers to remember their achievements were made possible by those that came before them. “This phrase, ‘black lives matter,’ I have been concerned about that phrase,” said Johnson. “I appreci-ate that it places ‘black’ at the center of the conversation. For some, that bothers them. So they say ‘all lives matter.’ Indeed, all lives do matter. Lives of chil-dren trapped in substandard housing, they matter. Lives of adults who need to be trained to fit in this economy, they matter. Lives of senior citizens who are juggling purchasing medication versus food, they matter…” . Ethics Board changes approved Staff Reports

A proposal to simplify the appointment pro-cess to the three-member ethics board, which hears complaints against the Rockdale County Board of Commissioners, passed unanimously March 27 after previously failing to receive sup-port. The second reading was waived as well.

Poste 2 Commissioner Doreen Williams pro-posed to have the Rockdale Coalition of Home-owners and Civic Associations nominate a mem-ber of the Coalition for their appointment to the ethics board, rather than have county employees vote on nominees chosen by the Coalition.

The previous revision of the law outlined that the board be composed of one person appointed by the Rockdale Bar Association, one person appointed by the Conyers-Rockdale Chamber of Commerce and one person appointed by county employees who live in the county drawn from a list of nominees chosen by the Rockdale Coalition of Homeowners and Civic Associa-tions.

When Williams proposed the change on March 3, the motion died for lack of a second.

This change had also been discussed by pre-vious Post 2 Commissioner JaNice Van Ness, who lost the 2014 election to Williams.

Lend a HamJust in time for Easter, Commissioner Oz

Nesbitt is asking the public to aid senior citi-zens with donations of ham for seniors in need.

Donors are asked to drop off a ham at the Nalley Hyundai dealership, at 945 Iris Drive SE, Conyers. The goal is to collect about 200 hams.

The hams will be distributed on Palm Sun-day, March 29, 3 p.m. at the Olivia Haydel Se-nior Center, 1240 Dogwood Drive, Conyers. Distribution will be first come, first served.

For more information, call 770-624-9446.

Clerk of Courts Oratorical ContestThe Rockdale County Clerk of Courts Of-

fice is partnering with Rockdale County Public Schools to provide eighth grade students an op-portunity to compete with their oratorical skills and win a cash prize on March 28, 10 a.m. - noon, at Conyers Middle School.

The goal of the competition, open to invited eighth graders, is to provide an enrichment op-portunity, support, recognize and reward eighth grade students.

Students will prepare an original persuasive/motivational speech on the topic of “I am re-sponsible for good government.” that is 3-5 minutes in length. Prizes will be awarded to first, second, and third place winners in the amounts of $500, $350 and $150 respectively.

It seems every day now some famous personality or for-mer friend has passed away

and at 68 it makes me think some-times of my own mortality.

I was born in 1946 so that makes me the very first of what is referred to as the “Baby Boomers” in this country.

I think a lot of the changes that have oc-curred in my lifetime, the technology especially, who would have thought when reading com-ics featuring Dick Tracey that his magic watch on which he talked into, would be more than a reality, today. Heck, 68 years ago if you even had a telephone it was prob-ably part of a party line, in which every neighbor had access to your most private conversations.

I was born in Washington, D.C. but when I was 5 my parents moved to the country – outside of Annapolis, Md. At age 11, I walked half way across Wash-ington D.C. by myself, from one relative’s house to another. In Maryland I lived about a mile down a dirt road surrounded by woods and the Chesapeake Bay. In the summer, I would leave the house in the morning and crab

and fish and play all day not re-porting home until late in the eve-ning. My parents never worried about some pervert grabbing me. I surely wouldn’t let my 10-year-old granddaughter go to the mall by herself let alone do any of the things I did.

In Annapolis, I attended pa-rochial schools and served as an altar boy; never once was I ever molested by a priest or a nun. I did get punished very severely one time though when I was caught sipping the blessed wine in be-tween masses.

I remember in high school if you held hands with a girl by the third date and maybe kissed her on the fourth or fifth date you were hot, and after you told all of your buddies, about your exploits, mostly made up, that poor girl was considered loose.

We used to go to dances on Friday night and the chaperones didn’t worry about booze or drugs. They just worried if you were dancing too close.

Then on a November day in 1963, the world changed. When President John F. Kennedy was assassinated, our naivety came to a crashing halt.

Over the next couple of years the whole culture changed – we went from simplistic love songs such as “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes” and “Moon River” to the loudest and most vicious of songs about hate and distrust. Our mov-

ies changed from the “Sound of Music” to violent movies such as “Straw Dogs.”

I saw people burn our flag, and spit on our soldiers returning from Viet Nam.

Yes, we were changed on that tragic day in 1963. If you will look at life as a giant pendulum, just imagine that the point of that pendulum instantly went from one side to the other, never lingering in the middle, and to this day it has stayed that way.

As I look back on my life I re-alize that I have had the best of all lives as a newspaper publisher. I got to play at politics without ever having to run for office. I have lunched and dined with mayors, governors and even vice presi-dents, I’ve sailed the Caribbean and West Indies, and I’ve sat in owner’s boxes at more than one ballpark. I have had the opportu-nity to mold and change people’s opinions; in short I’ve tasted the sweet wine of life.

I still believe in Peter Pan. I had a bypass operation and a heart at-tack, but it never occurred to me that I wouldn’t be here today; it still hasn’t.

I’ve been to the bottom of life and back again to the top. I was once a liberal Democrat and now am what I would call a Churchill Republican. I tear up when the flag passes; I still believe we have the best country in the world. I be-lieve my family is the most beau-

tiful and loving of all families. I actually cried like a baby when my cat Missy was put to sleep this week. I bawled again when we buried her under the pines in the back yard.

I still enjoy still being a pub-lisher; I am happy as a lark be-cause I recently reconnected with old friends and I look forward to having a cocktail or two with my wife as we sit on our deck and lis-ten to Pandora on my phone and we actually talk about the events of the day and the happenings of our family. We keep a running ac-count of whose side of the family is the nuttiest – or as they say to-day, dysfunctional – at any given moment.

One of my biggest regrets is that I still don’t know how to use all the functions on my computer or phone or even the television for that matter.

In spite of what’s going on in the world right now and in spite of the fact that we haven’t recov-ered from 1963, I am glad I’m a Baby Boomer. I finally accept that all things will be handled by the Good Lord, when and how it is to happen. Until then I plan to spend the rest of my life enjoying a mul-titude of blessings.

Now if I could only find Tinker-bell.

EditorialsLast week, we ran an editorial

that encouraged voters not to vote for a candidate because they had a D or R behind their name or be-cause of the color of their skin.

A person who we respect chal-lenged us on our intentions in that those intentions might have been to address this article to our Afri-can-American readers.

That couldn’t be further from the truth. If we do an editorial, it is meant to address an issue that might affect all of our readers.

If we wished to direct our com-ments to any particular members of our community, we will do so. And we have. When we offer a comment on our editorial pages it is strictly our opinion. We do not expect you to always agree. We do editorials and offer our opinions to hopefully generate thought by our readers.

Our opinions, contrary to some of our local politician’s thoughts, are not personal. If you agree with our opinion or disagree, you are al-ways welcome to share your own opinion either in person or by letter.

We are human here at your com-munity newspaper and we make judgement mistakes from time to time just as you might.

To have a strong community, it is essential that there be a strong com-munity newspaper. Neither is going to exist without the other.

Open honest discussion is im-portant to have in order to insure we have a free society.

We encourage you to share your opinions. We also encourage you to constantly be aggressive in preserv-ing your rights guaranteed by our Constitution and Bill of Rights

thoughts of a baby boomer

Terry D Johnson: I guess we are paying for the gas, insurance and upkeep of this vehicle too. Meanwhile, my husband works 80 hours a week and drives a $200 car back and forth to work.

Dominique Jones: That was real stupid....Conyers is not that big...a regular vehicle would have been fine..meantime we got neighborhoods that need attention

Kimberly Mitchell: Wth why can’t he supply his own freaking vehicle like the rest of us

Sherrill Smith: Was this really necessary?Steven Holmes: I’m not at all in favor

of this, but in fairness I’d point out that Oden’s predecessor, Roy Middlebrooks, had an Eddie Bauer Expedition that is apparently “worn

out”. I am disappointed that our new Post 2 Commissioner, after advocating for a more fuel efficient vehicle, rolled over and voted in favor.

Al Smith: It’s good to see that Atleast one person is using common sense. Mrs. Williams ran advocating that she wanted change , well we have seen your first change . Let’s see what the next change is you will allow . This is all about protecting your party rather than thinking of us the people who have to pay the taxes.

Josh McKelvey: All these comments, and I bet there are only 20 ppl at the next BOC meeting. Y’all have the power folks. Use it. Show up. Be heard.

Jeanna Dawson: Not thrilled with this...was the car wrapped up in some kind of deal

with other arrangements? Was it in the budget? What else got approved with this? Doreen Barry Williams states that she had to compromise too...on what?

Rick Gomes: Why doesn’t he buy his own vehicle like everyone else. Itshouldn’t be a perk for a “civil servant”.

Your reaction to “the county commission approving Rockdale County Chairman Richard Oden’s $40,000 SUV purchase.”

Gut check time for the Lady Patriots

There are not many schools in the area that take soc-cer as serious as Heritage, nor are there many in the area as profound as the Patriots’ soccer program, hence the Patriots’ impressive booster club. But when the season is not going as planned, everyone involved in the program starts to worry.

In the midst of their region schedule, there has been a bump in the road for the Lady Patriots of Heritage. After starting off the season 2-0 in Region 8-AAAAA, Heritage has lost its last three region games against Gainesville, Lanier and culminating with a 4-2 loss to Loganville on Tuesday evening.

“We have played ourselves into a tough situation,” Her-itage Head Coach Chad Suddeth said. “That’s our third region loss and we’re battling for our playoff lives.”

Against Loganville, Heritage didn’t necessarily play a bad game. The effort was there, but the opportunities that were

given to them weren’t converted. Offensively in the first half, they put themselves in position to score many times by making beautiful crosses and pushing the ball past the defense, but they just couldn’t get the ball in the net. Defen-sively, they gave those same chances to Loganville and the Lady Red Devils seemed to control the game more.

In the second half, the game opened up for both teams as Loganville scored first and Heritage quickly responded and took a 2-1 lead. But, the Lady Patriots defense could not stop Kat Klingensmith as she scored all four goals for Loganville. It wasn’t just Klingensmith. Loganville con-stantly pressured Heritage defenders and could have put up more points if it wasn’t for a few impressive saves by Heritage goalkeeper, Kylie Kersh.

“I thought we left some goals out there if we convert those it might have been a different outcome,” Suddeth said. “I was pretty proud of the effort obviously disap-pointed with the result. “

The major issue that Heritage can fix is having better control of the ball. Opposing defenses pressure their for-

wards and forced them into untimely strikes and errant passes. If they can have better composure when dribbling the ball and find teammates with accurate passes, Heri-tage can benefit both offensively and defensively because they will get better shots on goal and their defenders won’t get pressured as much if the offense in possession of the ball more.

Coming off a 2014 campaign where they went (8-0) in region play, the Lady Patriots are definitely not reaching the expectation they set for themselves. With just four se-niors, this team does have its fair share of young players and as time passes those players will evolve their game into what Suddeth needs them to be for his team to be successful. Currently, Heritage is in fifth place in their re-gion behind the three teams they lost too and a team they beat, Apalachee. Suddeth now has to find a way to moti-vate his team, and get them on the right track.

“We understand the situation we played ourselves in too,” Suddeth vocalized. “Bottom line, it is gut check time.”

Salem’s Mitchell honored at Naismith Award Banquet

From left to right: Ayanna Mitchell at the Georgia Athletic Coaches Association State All-Star Senior Showcase. Mitch-ell and her father Lucky Mitchell. Mitchell accepting her Naismith Award for the All-Metro Atlanta Girls Team.

he had an opportunity to down-size, downscale, going from the Expedition to the Ford Explorer, he refused to move away from his own personal interest and ego.

“At the same time, we took a vote on moving forward with green initiatives in Rock-dale County, becoming more eco-friendly. The chairman voted for that. However when it came to his personal interest, regarding the environment and the commu-nity, he became mute.

The requested vehicle was cut in price from $44,182 to $40,766 - exactly $3,416 less than before – by removing optional equipment such as the tow packing, work-ing lights, platinum paint and 4-wheel drive removed. The XLT package still adds about $13,403 to the standard Expedition price, which includes leather seats and a navigation system.

The City of Conyers has two officials that have take-home ve-hicles, according to a city spokes-person. Chief of Police Gene Wilson drives a 2013 Dodge Charger that cost, with lights, about $26,550. Public Works and Transportation Director Brad Sut-ton drives a 2006 F-150 truck that cost about $26,000.

Rockdale County Public Schools Superintendent Richard Autry drives a 2008 Chevy Tahoe as a take-home vehicle that cost the school system about $29,200.

Newton County’s Board of Commission Chairman drives a 2012 Ford Explorer that cost about $23,700 when it was pur-chased in 2011.

DeKalb County Interim CEO and Commission Chairman Lee May has use of a 2012 Chevy Tahoe LT, outfitted for police work, which cost $39,277. It is not a take-home vehicle but May is transported in it and has se-curity personnel who drive the vehicle, according to a county spokesperson.

Commissioner Williams ini-tially had reservations about the vehicle due to its $44,182 price tag since when it was introduced at a Jan. 20 work session.

But she said regarding her support Tuesday on the SUV, “It was a compromise. I didn’t get everything I wanted. But neither did the Chairman, and that’s just life.” She pointed out the issue had been on the agenda for three months and needed a conclusion.

Nesbitt said, regarding Wil-liams’ vote, “I’m just as confused about the position of Commis-sioner Williams, flip-flopping her posture and her stance on this is-sue.

He continued, “I’ll admit, I

said I was in favor of the Chair-man having an upgrade. How-ever after listening to the people in the community, the taxpayers, I decided it was in the best inter-est of Rockdale County for us to spend less money. He could get his job done in the same way in a less expensive vehicle. I’m confident that this issue is not

over and the people of Rockdale County will ultimately have the last say.”

Nesbitt initially “fully sup-ported” the new vehicle in Janu-ary but later said he thought that Rockdale County Chairman and CEO Richard Oden should have gone with a 2015 Ford Explorer, which cost $29, 947.

A recent undercover sting in Conyers found 93 percent of businesses tested to see if they would sell alcohol to mi-nors passed the test - the highest rate of compliance over the last year. Only three failed out of the 42 businesses checked.

The Conyers Police Department’s Marshal Unit, along with agents from the Georgia Department of Revenue, con-ducted an underage alcohol operation on Friday, March 13. Forty-two businesses within the City of Conyers were visited and underage teens working with Co-nyers Police attempted to purchase alco-holic beverages. Of the restaurants, bars, convenience stores, and package stores

visited, three of those businesses sold to the minors and were cited:

1. Citgo - 1553 Klondike Road2. Six Ways to Sunday - 1815 Highway 138, Suite 5003. Cozumel - 425 Sigman Road, Suite 116

Cozumel was addition-ally cited for serving alco-hol without a server permit which is required

“We are extremely pleased with our local businesses. 93 percent is the best compliance rate we have seen performing these checks,”

said Chief of Police Gene Wilson. “We attribute this accomplishment to our Responsible Alcohol Sales & Service

(RASS) class requirement for all of those who serve alcohol in the city. Not only do we continue to educate our businesses on state laws and local ordinances, we can prove the vast majority are abiding by them.”

Previous operations had pass rates of: January 2013 (76%), November 2013 (89%), August 2014 (81%)
