Amanda Berry disappeared aged 16 in 2003, while Gina DeJesus went missing at the age of 14 a year later. Michele Knight, 32, vanished in 2002 at the age of 20. Police have confirmed that all three were found in a house in the city of Cleveland, and that three men, all in their fifties, have been arrested in connection with the case. They told reporters that the three men are Hispanic, aged 50, 52 and 54, and that one of them had lived in the house where the girls were found. Gina DeJesus' uncle said they were in shock but very grateful for her discovery. "In all this time, 10 years, nobody never figured nothing about where she was at and this has come to an end and it's right here on Seymour," he said. WICKHAM’S

ORLD

Last weekend was our 30thanniversary so we wentaway in our little caravan fora long weekend. I know it willsound weird to some but, itis very small and cosy and Iabsolutely love it. We couldhave a bigger caravan and, someday when we’re retiredmaybe we will as we wereadmiring others on the site inDuquesa where we werestaying but, for now, it’ll do.The site we stayed on isrelatively new (only just overa year old) so everything isstill kept clean and tidy, including the loos andshower block which is a realbonus as some of these onother sites are absolutelyhorrid. On Thursday we haddinner in Marlows and onFriday pigged out on thefreshest calamari and saladfor lunch we’ve had in a longtime, then went to a new“tearooms” place inSabinillas that we hadrecommended to us for teaand cakes – needless to saywe didn’t need dinner thatnight so it was soup and toastin the van! Saturday was theactual anniversary and theonly way I can remember thedate is by thinking of StarWars (May the fourth bewith you!?!). We had a lovelyday exploring the area, wentto a little local zoo thatstarted off as a rescue centreand then travelled just alongthe road into Duquesa Portfor a nice Chinese meal. All inall a good weekend was hadby all.You will notice on the letterspage this week that I havehad replies to my questionabout how would you knowhow far you are from alighthouse (and thereforeany rocks etc.,) if you were ona boat. I have the sort ofcurious nature that thesethings just pop into my mindfrom time to time so, thanksto all those who haveanswered the question, Ishall now feel safer!

Socialist leader AlfredoPérez Rubalcaba hadhardly finished a pressconference on Sunday toannounce his party's planto stem risingunemployment, preventfresh rounds of layoffs andto alleviate the effect of therecession on families, when the bureaucrats inBrussels began to react.

The plan calls for thestate to award credits fromnow until 2015 tocompanies that do notsack workers and the

creation of a national fundworth €10 billion that out-of-work families in dangerof eviction can tap to meettheir debts with the banks.

Rubalcaba said thefunds could be tappedfrom the “credit line openwith the EuropeanStability Mechanism(ESM), which still has €60billion available” afterSpain’s banking sectorbailout. Brusselsimmediately made it clearthat the money allotted tobail out Spain’s banks can

be used purely for thatpurpose.

On Monday, Rubalcabasaid: “I would ask thepeople in Brussels not toanswer without thinking, that they listen to us andread what we areproposing.”The SocialistParty believes that theunemployment rate of 26.2per cent is proof that thegovernment’s austeritymeasures have failed andthat credit flows to theprivate sector must beencouraged.”

A new law being debatedin parliament couldrestrict private holidayrentals across Spain. Thegovernment is concernedabout the number oftourists now choosing torent accommodationprivately instead ofthrough hotels andregistered tour companies.

Currently private homeowners can rent theirproperty to tourists on a"short-term" seasonalbasis as long as theydeclare revenue. Thatprovision will be droppedfrom the new law, whichmeans home owners willhave to ensure theirproperties conform to thesame regulations alreadyimposed on hotels andcampsites and provide aminimum standard ofquality as well as meethealth and safetyrequirements.

The passing of this lawhas been described as a

death blow to a growingsector that contributes tothe economy, but it hasbeen welcomed byhoteliers who feel privaterenters pose unfaircompetition in the sector.

The move is also widelyseen as an attempt to limitthe black market in touristrentals making it easierfor authorities to detecttax evaders. The FinanceMinistry has estimatedthat undeclared revenuefrom rentals of privatehomes amounted to some€2.9 billion in 2010 – asignificant proportion

coming from holiday lets.In the currentunemployment crisis, many families survive byletting out one room totourists or moving in withrelatives for short periodsduring the high season torent out their properties tomake extra cash.

According to a recentreport by La Caixa, lastyear there were around 1.1billion overnight stays bytourists with more thantwo-thirds estimated tohave taken place inaccommodation which isunregistered.

This is the first time thePentagon's annual report has directly linked such attacks to theBeijing government. While China has long been suspected of arole in cyber attacks, the US has generally avoided publiclyattributing attacks to the Chinese government, or confirmingthat US government computers have been targeted. An alleged member of a German neo-Nazi cell went on trial inMunich on Monday in connection with a series of raciallymotivated murders. Beate Zschaepe, 38, is accused of beingpart of the National Socialist Underground (NSU), which killed10 people, mostly of Turkish background. She denies themurder charges. Critics have accused authorities of turning ablind eye to the crimes of right-wing extremists. Officials denythis, saying mistakes occurred because the murders werespread across different regions, each with different police andsecurity agencies. The killings took place over a seven-yearperiod, and none of the victims or locations was high-profile.Four male defendants are also on trial with Ms Zschaepe, facinglesser charges of having helped the NSU.

Mr Kerry's visit comesafter Israel launched twoair strikes in southernSyria, which sources saytargeted weapons boundfor militants in Lebanon.Russia condemned theattacks as threateningregional stability.

Foreign correspondentshave said it is unlikelythat Mr Kerry will be ableto change PresidentPutin's stance on Syria. They said Moscowgenuinely fears that a badsituation will get evenworse if President Bashar

al-Assad is pushed frompower, and that Islamistswill fill the void.

Ahead of Mr Kerry'svisit, Russia's foreignministry called on theWest to stop politicisingthe issue of chemicalweapons in Syria. Itexpressed concern thatworld public opinion wasbeing prepared for possiblemilitary intervention.

The United Nations hasplayed down claims by oneof its experts that therewas evidence rebels had

used nerve gas.Investigator Carla DelPonte earlier saidtestimony from victimsand doctors had given riseto "strong, concretesuspicions but not yetincontrovertible proof"that opposition forces hadused sarin. But theCommission of Inquiry onSyria stressed on Mondayit had not reached any"conclusive findings".

The colourless, odourless gas is classed asa weapon of massdestruction and is bannedunder international law. After his visit to Russia,Mr Kerry will travel toRome to meet Italian,Israeli and Jordanianofficials to discuss MiddleEast issues, including thePalestinian-Israeli peaceprocess.

Giulio Andreotti, one ofthe most prominentpolitical figures of post-war Italy, has died aged94. He was Italian primeminister seven timesbetween 1972 and 1992.

He led the ChristianDemocrat party, whichdominated Italian politicsfor decades. He wasdogged in later years byallegations of corruptionand Mafia links, after asupergrass accused him ofsharing a "kiss of honour"with the Mafia's "boss ofbosses", Toto Riina, at asecret meeting in 1987.

And he was tried forallegedly ordering themurder of a journalist whohad threatened to publishdetails of his Mafiainvolvement. His acquittal

was subsequentlyoverturned by an appealscourt, which sentencedhim to 24 years in prison –before that ruling, too, wasoverturned.

However, in 2004,Italy's top appeals courtdid uphold a verdict thathe had "consciously anddeliberately cultivated astable relationship" withMafia bosses, but he wasnot formally convictedbecause the offence hadlapsed under Italy'sstatute of limitations.

He remained a senatorand an influential politicalfigure until his final years, not least because of hisclose ties with the Vatican. He died at his apartmentin Rome, just a stone'sthrow from Vatican City.

In Ireland's war memorialgardens, the dates of bothworld wars are carved on amonument, even thoughthe country remainedneutral in World War II.

In order to fight in it,thousands of soldiers leftthe country and the IrishArmy to join the Britishforces. They becameknown as deserters andtheir punishment cameafter the war when manyof the soldiers headed

home to Ireland. Theywere barred from holdingjobs paid for by the state, they lost their pensionrights and many faceddiscrimination.

Last year the Irishgovernment apologised forthe way they were treatedand on Tuesday DefenceMinister Alan Shatterannounced details of apardon during a debate inIreland's parliament, theDail. The legislation is

"The safer the place whereyou put your money, themore you pay for it," said abanking friend in Jersey inJuly 1991, a few days afterthe Bank of Englandclosed the Bank of Credit& Commerce, Gibraltar.More than five

thousand depositors, mainly British pensionersin Malaga Province, sawtheir savings of £83million wiped outovernight.BCCG had offered

interest rates which wereslightly higher than thenorm, tempting manydepositors, myselfincluded. Most had no ideathat BCCG was not anentirely 'safe place' to puttheir money.'Closure' for me has

come after nearly 22 years:the initial shock, tears andfrustration but thereassurance that theBCCG Liquidators weredoing their level best to getour money back. This, allpraise to them, they havenow accomplished. In the early 1990s I

worked for a MiddleEastern airline; I had a

Pakistani secretary.Two condemnatory

articles about the Bank ofCredit & CommerceInternational (BCCI),founded by a PakistaniMoh'd Abedi, hadappeared in 'Time'magazine. I discussedthese with my secretaryand when I mentionedthat I had funds withBCCG, he sucked in hisbreath and shook his head. Those two 'Time' articlesand his unspoken advicewere enough to set thealarm bells ringing.Something else that hadme wondering was thatBCCI was to be owned inpart by Sheik Zayed ofAbu Dhabi and his family.Using my airline

transportation privilege Imade a quick trip home inApril and confronted theManager of BCCG. Hespread his hands intypically Asian fashionand told me that BCCGwas fully backed by theBank of England. Howvery mistaken he was!I called my wife and

sensibly we decided toshift the bulk of our funds,

leaving a few thousand inGibraltar for emergencies. But what had happened

to the Gibraltar depositors'money? Most had been moved to

Grand Cayman viaLondon and placed in anunregulated BCCIsubsidiary 'InternationalCredit & InvestmentCompany' – in effect abanking limbo wherebillions of dollars simplydisappeared. It is said thatfrom there the CIAsyphoned funds off for'black projects'.One last anecdote: A

BCCG - a personalview from a reader

Are you a UK expat but stilla British Citizen? Do youhold assets in an offshoretrust?

If so, read on ...

The British government isconstantly chipping away atthe effectiveness of offshoretrust structures ininheritance tax planningstrategies for Britishcitizens, and their latestchanges to the way trustsare taxed have furtherreduced the usefulness ofthese tools for many.HMRC has recently

announced a swoop ontrusts that are being used tohide income and wealthoverseas by those domiciledand non-domiciled in theUK. From May 2013,HMRC will be focussing onthose who are deliberatelyevading tax through truststhat are formed under thelaws of an offshorejurisdiction and those withoverseas trusts who havenot been keeping up withthe changes in tax rules mayalso face penalties or even ajail sentence.Let’s first consider

domicile and residence – it’simportant to remember thatthere is a difference betweenthem. This is a complex

area because according tothe Revenue's ownguidelines, "It is not possibleto list all the factors thataffect your domicile". Butbasically, there are twoconcepts: Residency iswhere you spend your timefor tax purposes whilst alive.Whereas Domicile becomescrucial on your death.

RESIDENCETax residence of

convenience DOES NOTwork. If you become a taxresident in a tax haven (suchas Gibraltar, ChannelIslands or Malta) or evenstill consider yourself a UKtax resident and spend ashort time there each year,it will not protect you, allowing you to spend asmuch time in any othercountry as you want.Simply saying "I am aresident of…" when you arespending a lot more time inSpain, for example, IS NOTa defence against beingclassed as a Spanish taxresident. The double-taxtreaty, if one exists, will offerlittle protection. It’s difficult to hide, and is

that really what you want?If your tax planning relies onyour new country's taxauthorities not realising youare there, think again. We

all leave a trail revealing ourwhereabouts – utility bills, mobile phone records, creditcard and bank statements,as well as possible witnessevidence from gardeners, cleaners, neighbours etc.Surely it is better to have asolid tax plan where all thefacts are known and you aresafe – and avoid thesleepless nights!

DOMICILEYour 'domicile of origin' is

where your father'spermanent home was. So,you could have been born inFrance, but if your fatherwas English, your domicileof origin is Britain. You canchange your domicile onceyou reach age 16, but youhave to convince HMRCthat you really have left theUK for foreign shorespermanently. Just livingabroad for a long time is notenough. Evenconsiderations like whereyour driving licence wasissued, whether you havebecome a citizen of your newcountry, and whether youhave made funeralarrangements in your newcountry may form part of thedecision making process byHMRC. Ultimately, it isyour nation of domicile thatdetermines whether the

British tax authorities cantax your estate upon death. Prior to 1991, it was

possible for domicile andnon-domicile UK residentsto use offshore trusts andnot pay capital gains tax,and for individuals of acertain wealth it wasstandard planning. In 1991 those rules

changed to stop UKdomiciles using offshoretrusts and in 1998 theserules were extended to non-domiciles.Since 2008 the laws

tightened further, demanding UK non domspay a fee of between £30,000and £50,000 a year for theprivilege of an offshore trustand as soon as the moneycomes into the UK itbecomes subject to capitalgains tax.

Offshore Trust Assets report - part 1 Mirren stopsthe show againActress Helen Mirren, 67,was not amused onSaturday when a group ofdrummers outside theGielgud Theatre inLondon where she wasportraying The Queen inthe play “The Audience”disturbed herperformance. In apositively show-stoppingperformance she stormedout of the theatre dressedas the monarch to deliveran expletive-riddled tiradeat the group for ruiningthe play for performersand audience alike.Despite some of theaudience trying to silencethem previously, it tookthe actress in full pearlsand tiara costume tellingthem to shut up to do thetrick and the drummersstopped immediatelywhen they realized whoshe was.

"I'm afraid there were afew 'thespian' words used. They got a very sternroyal ticking off but I haveto say they were verysweet and they stoppedimmediately. I literallywalked straight off stage,

straight up the stairs andstraight out the stage doorand banged my waythrough the crowd whowere watching and said'stop, you've got to stopright now' only I mighthave used strongerlanguage than that. Theywere very sweet andstopped the minute theyknew I wasn't just a battyold woman haranguingthem on the streets ofSoho on a Saturday night.I felt rotten, but on theother hand they weredestroying ourperformance so somethinghad to be done," she said.

Liam Emerson, themusical director of theBatala London drummerswho had been hired toadvertise a gay festivallater in May, said theyhad not intended todisturb anyone. "Herlanguage was very blue, which looking back on it isprobably quite funnyreally. But once I realisedit was Helen Mirren andwe were right next to atheatre we kind of stoppedand politely apologised."

Illegal migrants increase

As a result, the number ofillegal migrants trying toenter Spain along itssouthern coast is on theincrease, after three yearsof falling figures.

Africans coming fromthe south have usedrickety old boats in thepast but the latest way ofcrossing the Strait is byinflatable plastic dinghiesmade for children tosplash about in at thebeach – under parentalsupervision, of course.

The spokeswoman forone NGO, CaminandoFronteras (WalkingFrontiers) has worked 11years in northern Moroccoand has a lot of experiencein this area. HelenaMaleno told a localnewspaper that kids'inflatables are easy toacquire, even thoughthey're more expensive inMorocco. "But they'recheaper than paying thepeople trafficking gangs toget you across the Strait,"she said. The people who

take the risk of travellingin them are men andwomen between the agesof 17 and 30, many ofwhom have a goodeducation and can speaktwo or more languages. They want to work andhave a better life, far awayfrom the famine and warsthat plague theircountries, Maleno said."They know the inflatablesare fragile but they can'tpay the traffickers andtheir need to get away is sogreat they're prepared totake the risk."

The traditional routebetween north Africa andsouthern Spain is only 14kilometres long so it

should be easy, they think.Maleno said somemigrants spend three orfour months hiding fromthe Moroccan authoritieswhile they wait for anopportunity to cross theStrait. "Some hide in thewoods and beg for food, while others hide in roomsalong with 15 to 30 otherpeople whose only food ismaize and flour", Malenosaid.

The figures presentedby the tax chief inAlgeciras, Juan Cisneros, show that more and morepeople are gettingdesperate. "A lot of peopleprefer our crisis, theirdesperation is

understandable," he said.In 2011, the internmentcentre in Algecirasattended to 3,141migrants. Last yearthat number had risen to5,000.

This year it is expectedto be much higher as theGuardia Civil's sea rescueboats continue to pick upinflatables carrying 11 orso migrants a couple oftimes a week, and thisfigure will rise as thesummer and a kinder seaapproaches. No-one willever know how manymigrants drowned beforethey reached Spanishshores.

Things may be bad in Spain but they're even worse in Africa.

A Seville judge on Fridaydismissed a complaintagainst the brother of theconvicted killer of 17-year-old Marta del Castillo, whose body has still notbeen found four years afterthe crime. Miguel Carcaño,the teenager’s boyfriendand originally self-confessed murderer, hadgiven investigators sixdifferent versions of events, leading them on wild goosechases for Marta’s body indumps, fields and theGuadalquivir River.

Two weeks ago,Carcaño told the policethat it was his stepbrotherFrancisco Javier Delgado,a security guard, whokilled Marta when the twomen were fighting overmoney. Marta tried to stopthem and Delgado hit heron the head with the buttof his gun. Carcaño said hemerely helped dispose ofthe body. Again, no specificburial site was provided.Judge Francisco de AsísMolina criticized the policefor awarding credibility tothis new, “non-rigorous”and “unlikely” version ofevents from Carcaño, whoclaims he was too scared ofhis stepbrother to accusehim until now.

The judge said thepolice should not havetaken another statementfrom Carcaño, especiallywhen he has already beenconvicted of a crimeagainst the moral integrity

Judge dismisses newstory from Marta’s killer

The provincial High Courtof Palma de Mallorca hasdecided to remove PrincessCristina from the list ofofficial suspects in theinvestigation into thebusiness dealings of herhusband, IñakiUrdangarin, and hisformer business partnerDiego Torres.

The decision is based onwhat the court perceivedas a lack of evidenceagainst King JuanCarlos’s youngestdaughter. A three-magistrate panel ruledtwo to one in favour ofpublic prosecutor PedroHorrach, who had calledfor the subpoena issuedagainst the princess to bewithdrawn. The princesshad been summoned to

appear before Judge JoséCastro on April 27th toanswer questions aboutthe business activities ofthe non-profit NóosInstitute, of whichUrdangarin was presidentand Cristina listed as aspokesperson, boardmember and advisor.

Urdangarin is accusedof siphoning off millions ofeuros of public moneythrough Nóos to privatecompanies by over-invoicing for sports andtourism events in theBalearics and Valenciaregions. The twomagistrates who voted tosuspend the princess’ssummons asked the judgeto formulate more solidevidence of a possiblefinancial crime.

Memo fromMadridMartin DelfínWrites for the English language version of

The LocalVoice

Muriel Pilkington

Icouldn't believe my eyes when Iopened a local English-languagenewspaper last week to find film

director Pedro Almodóvar predictingviolent protests across Spain on May1st. The article came out of the blue -I hadn't seen it in any Spanishnewspaper and it must have beendays old. In fact I later discovered itwas printed in The Guardian - whoelse thinks Almodóvar sits on theright hand of God - on April 27th. Inwhat I presume was an exclusiveinterview with the Guardian'scorrespondent in Madrid, Almodóvarsaid he was worried about socialunrest but that doesn't stop him frombacking the Mortgage Victims'Platform who are protesting veryrowdily outside the homes ofgovernment members - although wehaven't heard too much about themlately. A typical leftie, he throws astone then hides his hand, saying ,"that [the latest unemploymentfigures] doesn't mean I am incitinganyone to violence. It is quite theopposite. I would invite everyone toreact, but in the most peaceful waypossible." Typical leftie double talk.He understands people's frustrationscan lead them to act violently - whichhe deplores, of course - but the factthat he "understands" their violencewill encourage some lefties to actviolently - because Almodóvar feelsfor them and as we all know he sits onthe right hand of God. This violence -the anti-system mob believe - willeventually rouse the great Spanishpeople to rebel and bring about theRevolution when we will all live inthe most perfect of worlds.

Iapologise for sounding so p****doff but Almodóvar has gotten upmy nose ever since he declared

after the March 2004 election thatJose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero wasabout to usher in 1,000 years ofSocialism - shades of the Third Reich.Further on in the interview, heconfesses that Zapatero is no longerhis hero. "It is not justdisappointment. His last four yearswere a monumental disaster." Thismakes me suspect he has movedfurther left and is now an ardentadmirer of the United Left, aka theCommunist Party. I wonder how longit will take for him to becomedisillusioned with them.

Almodóvar rose to prominenceduring the so-called "movida"which started during the

transition from dictatorship todemocracy (1975-1978) when life inMadrid especially, but in the rest ofSpain as well, was just one long partyin which "anything went", as areaction to the nearly four decades ofFranco's sexual repression.

Almodóvar, who was working at thestate telephone company, perceived itas a halcyon time of unfetteredfreedom and unbounded optimism. Now he says: "It has taken me 30years to realise it, but this country issocially conservative."

Despite Almodóvar's prediction, the May Day protests in morethan 80 cities across Spain

drew just about half the number ofpeople as they did last year - as eventhe unions who organised themarches admitted. Now this is ratherparadoxical. Here we have recordunemployment, yet on their very ownday, the workers didn't take to thestreets.

Then again, as the English-language newspaper articleomitted to mention, the much-

vaunted "siege" of Parliament onApril 25th, which was supposed tohole up MPs for days, ended by 8 pmthe same day and drew as manyprotesters as policemen - around1,400. Another paradox. Whathappened was that the usual groupsof protesters got wind of the fact thatthe anti-system groups who organisedthe siege were planning on violence sothey stayed away.

Could it be that the greatSpanish public wants nothingto do with the "dictatorship of

the proletariat" - a concept former PMFelipe Gonzalez purged for theSocialist Party's manifesto way backin 1980, because he wanted to win thenext election and knew the Spanishpeople wouldn't vote for anythingthat sounded like Communism. Theyremembered too well that party'smiserable performance during thecivil war, when the Communists weretoo busy eliminating rivals on the leftto fight against Franco. And we allknow how that ended. So Gonzalezthreatened to resign as party leaderunless all vestiges of Communistjargon were eradicated from SocialistParty literature. He got his way andwon the 1982 general election tobecome the country's longest-runningSocialist PM. That's one leftie whoknows what he's doing, which can't besaid of the rest of them

What Convictions?Contradictions

The foreign policy objectives theRajoy administration has triedto carry out during the past 18

months that the Partido Popular (PP)has been in office have fallen flat, turning into embarrassing dilemmasthe prime minister hopes will just goaway. Last week, diplomaticobservers saw a new gargantuan slipwhen Foreign Minister José ManuelGarcía-Margallo offered to playinternational mediator between thenewly sworn-in Venezuelangovernment of Nicolás Maduro, which many countries have beenhesitant for now to formallyrecognise, and the country’sopposition, whose leader HenriqueCapriles is demanding a full recountof the April 14th vote he says wasplagued with irregularities. Backingdown from his previous pledge tohold a vote audit, President Madurotold Margallo - and, of course, theentire Spanish government - to “keephis nose” out of Venezuela’s affairs. This slap in the face occurred justdays after Spain, stepping out of linewith the rest of the European Union, decided to go on its own andrecognise Maduro’s win.

It isn’t any wonder why aconservative government is soanxious to close this chapter on

the controversial Venezuelanpresidential election narrowly won -albeit with many questions still athand - by a Cuban-sponsoredmisguided leftist movement thatsuddenly found itself orphaned onMarch 5th when its leader PresidentHugo Chávez died from cancerwithout leaving any clear futuredirection. Maduro was Chávez’shandpicked successor; Chávez askedhis followers last December to votefor his standing vice president whenhe realised that he may not pullthrough from his final cancersurgery.

Although small compared toprevious years before Chávezwent on a nationalization

binge, Spanish investments inVenezuela still thrive but Rajoyneeds to see more sprouts in SouthAmerica. The PP government hadbeen pondering on ways to makepeace with Maduro in order to winback some of those juicy oilexploration ventures that Repsol lostunder Chávez - including theexploitation of newly found reservesin the Gulf of Maracaibo - to rake inmuch-needed hard cash for Madrid.

But to do so, the PP must putaside its traditional right-wingphilosophies, even overlooking

international law, at least publicly,to win appeasements from Caracas.

“La Gaceta,” one of the conservativeright’s own mouthpieces, reported onMonday that Maduro has at least 15ETA members on the government’spayroll. This gang of terroristsinclude the international fugitiveJosé Arturo Cubillas Fontán, whosupervises a string of Venezuelanpublic companies that manage landand food supplies, and who earnsmore money than Maduro himself.Cubillas has been wanted by theSpanish National Court since 2010for allegedly helping ETA aid theRevolutionary Armed Forces ofColombia (FARC) and on suspicionsof conspiracy to commit politicalassassinations. Socialist PrimeMinister José Luis RodríguezZapatero also had been put in thesame uncomfortable position whenhe learned of the court’s warrant; heremained reluctant to demand thatChávez hand over Cubillas. At thetime, PP hardliners insisted thatZapatero cut off all ties withVenezuela for harbouring wantedterrorists, and ruthlessly criticizedhim for cowardice. But today thosevoices are silent.

Foreign policy has always been aone-up, one-down business, butit is usually mapped out with

lots of discretion. The PP has beenfar from discreet. With theoverwhelming domestic problemsspinning out of the government’scontrol, Rajoy doesn’t need to pushany international adversary into acorner who could be useful in thefuture to help him out of thisunprecedented socio-economic crisis.Keep your enemies close and put a lidon your hypocritical principles.

Recovering

Hearty thanks to our readersfor the warmest wishes for aspeedy recovery following my

dopey performance on a stairwell ata friend’s home on the afternoon ofMay 4th, when I reached down to tiemy tennis shoe on a narrow step (likeyou should do) and literally wenttumbling down one flight. Because Iwas conscious (thank goodness) theMadrid emergency medical SAMURunit declined to send an ambulance(regional government cutbacks), andI had to get to La Paz Hospital withthe help of dear friends who keptclose watch during my ordeal. Thearm brace should be off soon and thestitches on my brow removed in thecoming days, but that shiner on theleft eye will take longer to fade away.Ah, the perils of living in the big city.

According to the Spanishlaw all individuals who areliving in Spain for morethan 183 days a year aretax residents in Spain, andhave to pay taxes in Spainfor their worldwideincome.

Many foreigners livingin Spain permanently, (formore than 183 days ayear), do not pay any taxesin Spain, or submit annualincome tax returns. Somedo not submit annual taxreturns out of ignorance ofthe law, and othersbecause they are afraid ofpaying high taxes.Everyone should be awarethat ignorance of the lawis no excuse, A tax returnshould be submittedannually, and taxesshould be paid whenapplicable by all taxresidents in Spain.

Up to date, the SpanishInland Revenue has notbeen controlling thesituation of thoseforeigners living

permanently in Spain, despite the fact that theauthorities are aware ofthis important group ofpeople. Now the situationhas changed. Due to thefinancial crisis, theSpanish governmentintends to tighten up itscontrol of all foreignersliving in Spain to ensurethat they pay taxes wheredue, and thus avoidthousands of peoplereceiving free healthservices without payingtaxes and without havingthe legal right to get them. The Spanish governmenthas decided to be stricterwith the legalrequirements that allowpeople to get Spanishhealth cards. Unlike in thepast, now it will not beenough to just registerwith the local Town Hall(“Empadronamiento”) inorder to get treatment.

Therefore, NOW is thetime to formally become atax resident in Spain bysubmitting your annual

income tax return for thetax year 2012, This shouldbe done during the monthsof May and June 2013.

There are many goodreasons for doing this. Itwill enable foreignresidents to:

1. Confirm to theSpanish tax authoritieswithout doubt, that they, the tax resident, is livingin Spain, and paying taxeswhen applicable.

2. Have the legal rightto receive a health cardwhich allows access to theSpanish public healthsystem.

3. Avoid the 3%withholding tax when areal estate property issold. This tax is applicableto foreigners who sell aproperty and cannot provethat they are a taxresident in Spain.

4. Benefit from theinheritance tax

advantages andallowances applicable totax residents in Spain (i.e.lower inheritance taxesbetween spouses on themain home).

5. Be considered a taxresident in Spain, thusavoiding the income taxapplicable to non-residentforeigners who are ownersof a real estate property inSpain (tax form 210).

It is important tomention that mostforeigners living in Spainare pensioners with lowmonthly pensions, so theyshould be aware that theyprobably will not have topay any income tax inSpain as the result of theirtax return would mostlikely be zero. However, itis still recommendable tosubmit an annual taxreturn, (even if the resultis zero and no tax has to bepaid), to enable them to beable to take advantage ofthe above points.

CONCLUSION: If youare foreigner livingpermanently in Spain (formore than 183 daysbetween 1st January 2012and 31st December 2012) Iwould recommend thatyou submit an annualincome tax return duringthe months of May andJune 2013, for the tax year2012. By so doing you areconfirming to the Spanishtax authorities that youare, without doubt, a taxresident in Spain, you willavoid any potentialproblems, or fines, and willhave all the legal rightsthat the Spanish Lawsrecognises are due to allindividuals residinglegally in Spain and dulypaying their taxes here.

Birds on the Wing - The HoopoeThe striking pinky coloured bird with black and white striped wings and a crest that you see visitingyour lawn is the HoopoeMost Hoopoes spend theirwinter in Africa but a fewspend their winter here. Those that go to Africastart to move norththrough Andalucía at thebeginning of Februarywhile the Hoopoes thatspend their summer in

Andalucía arrive duringMarch.

The Hoopoes pair onlyfor a summer. Some birdspair up again beforereturning to Africa in theAutumn but many waituntil they return in the

Spring. The first thing themale does on his return isselect a territory and beginto make his well-known"poop-poop" song, whilstbowing his beakrhythmically to his breast.

When a female is

attracted, vigorous chasestake place with the malecalling loudly and raisinghis crest up and down. The pair then choose anest hole where seven toeight eggs are laid.

Incubation is by thefemale and nestlingsappear slightly over twoweeks later. The youngare cared for and fed bythe female while the malebrings food to the nesthole, which he rarelyenters. The nestlings areready to fly after aboutfour weeks and arecontinued to be fed by themale for some time whilethe female incubatesanother clutch of eggs. Upto four broods can beproduced in one year.

If you do happen to comeacross a Hoopoe's nest, refrain from peering intothe hole because both theparent and chick have a

remarkably accurate aimwith their foul-smelling,liquid faeces!

Towards the end of theyear you may suddenlyfind yourself thinking"Where have all theHoopoes gone?" Well, by

the end of October themajority have gone back toAfrica.

Unalloyed joy for StarTrek fans who will besetting phasers to stun andand boldly going to anearby cinema to catch thesecond instalment in theJJ Abrams reboot of thefamous franchise. His2009 movie reintroducedus to the very young Kirk,Spock, Bones et al pre-TVseries and was a massivehit.

The second (or 11th ifyou add it to the Star Trekcanon) in the series seesthe characters a little older

and subtly more rounded.

Sherlock’s BenedictCumberbatch plays thevillain with real relish andcharisma – he is rogueStarfleet officer JohnHarrison who makes hismark by laying waste toLondon and blowing up aStarfleet conference in LosAngeles before beaminghimself up to Kronos, planet of the Klingons.

In the meantime Kirkhas broken the primedirective to save Spock and

the two men are at daggersdrawn. But of course theyget over this blip in theirrelationship and it’s allaboard the USS Enterprisefor an exhilarating ride toseek out Harrison.

There are – of course –stunning special effectsincluding a breathtakingwarp speed space chase, and warm witty dialogueto help everything crackalong at a thrilling pace.Star Trek fans will love it– there’s plenty of slyreferences for fans to pick

up on. And newcomers willwant to find out moreabout the characters andwhat makes them tick – soroll on the thirdinstalment!

JJ Abrams has beenentrusted with directingStar Wars followingDisney’s acquisition of therights from George Lucas. On the evidence of whatthe director has done withStar Trek we should belicking our lips withanticipation.

MOVIES AND DVDS TO WATCH OUT FOR IN 2013

MOVIE SPOTLIGHT By Amy Thomas

When I read AlbertPierrepoint’s book

about his career as theGovernment’s executioner,I was fascinated. It was anincredibly interesting bookin which he explained howhe came to be hangman, what his training consistedof and highlighted thesocial difficulties that hiswork implied.

Well it seems someoneelse also enjoyed Mr.

Pierrepoint’s book, anddecided to make a film outof it.

This, I am afraid, was amistake. The film,

starring Timothy Spall asAlbert Pierrepoint, claimsto be based on a true story. What it should have read is‘based on actual events’.The film followsPierrepoint’s life fromwhen he started his job in1933 to his resignation in1955. It takes a special kindof personality to be asuccessful executioner…strong enough not to getemotional, yet sensitiveenough to be dignified andrespectful. As well aspossessing all these traitsand more, Pierrepoint wasalso the quickest and mosteffective, ensuring animmediate and painlessdeath.

Field MarshallMontgomery actually

sent for Albert to go toGermany and execute the

Nazi war criminals at theend of the war. When hereturned, he was disturbedto find that his ‘cover’ hadbeen blown, so to speak, and was being hailed as ahero but adulation turnedto derision when he carriedout Ruth Ellis’s sentence.

So, all interesting readingbut nothing really to

make a story out of, hencea few liberties were taken. The little storyline insertedwas nothing really morethan that of Albert’s friend‘Tish (played by thewonderful character actorEddie Marsen) who has adoomed love affair andends up facing Albert underthe worst circumstances.

It is a poignant little tale, and the film is true to

what British film makersare good at, namelyauthentic period pieces, jolly pub singalongs, wartime fashions and 50’smorals. The script wasrespectable, and the actingwas good but it just wasn’tenough to save the film.

Ihave the greatest respectfor such an unenviable

job and althoughPierrepoint‘s book wasinformative and at timesquite amusing, the subjectof hanging is notentertaining and no cutelittle story woven into themovie is going to make itso.

There are just those times when you can tell things are working inyour favour and this is one of those weeks, you also feel more able to expressyour thoughts and feelings with greater ease without worrying how others willreact. Keep your eyes peeled for great opportunities coming your way.

Something in your life is coming to full circle now, tying up the loose ends andclearing any residue chaos is where your attention needs focus. There seems tobe much happening ‘behind the scenes’ on your behalf and in order to truly benefitit would be beneficial to remain proactive. Your choices and actions that willdetermine the outcome, the events taking place can take you in very differentdirections and have very different outcomes. Allow your dreams to come true.

This week you have the ability to be far more objective than of late and seethings far more clearly without having much emotional attachment orinvestment in what is going on around you. It will be as if you are viewing yourlife like you are watching a movie. By stepping away from a situation you willbe able to see the best way to navigate without getting emotionally swept awayby other people’s opinions and emotions. Refuse to cave into negativity.

You have the potential to rise to the heights right now where your levels of status, honour and fame ignite and shine making you a magnet or beacon to others. Some may resent your success but that is bound to happen, if you remain humbleand down to earth then no-one can criticise your good fortune. Everybody seemsto be waiting for you to do or say something to get something started, they maynot like what you say but they will respect you for speaking the truth.

You have either been working too hard or worrying too much, you need tolighten up and indulge in some good hearted humour which will allow you toshed a world of weight from your shoulders. Sometimes it just takes a gooddose of something different in your day which can put things properly intoperspective. Your most cherished connections get a boost renewing somethingthat had gone south or felt stale.

Right now it is all about you and your individualism, the more willing you areto drop your mask and show others the real you deep inside, the better off youwill be. When you reveal the real you, you will realise that you have all the rightqualities that everybody on the planet is looking for. By the weekend yourperspective is likely to change and you will see something in a new light andfrom this all sorts of possibilities can occur.

Sometimes, in order for something to attain balance, if things have been so offkilter, then the pendulum needs to swing entirely in the other direction first.Witnessing this is harder than experiencing it - but before certain realisationscan occur sometimes this is essential before balance can be restored. If thingsare reaching an extreme, then by the weekend where there is a will, there willbe a way. There is a lot more to you than meets the eye.

There are things you know you could do that, if you make time for, could inturn have a way of increasing that one precious resource you feel you arerunning out of, energy. You are being pulled in a myriad of directions and if youare not solid and centred, you will be of little use for anything or anybody. Youknow what you need and that equals simple spaces with minimal drama. Youneed peace and some down time to nourish your base.

Do not let the little things that pop up out of nowhere throw you off your centre. There will always be a way through and an opportunity for you to shine, it is justsometimes you need a bit more patience and faith. Try not to limit your potentialto your current conditions, as the more down to earth and at ease with yourselfyou become the more others are drawn and attracted to you. Your creativity is ultrahigh at the moment and an outlet for expression is calling you.

At times you live on the edge Aquarius and right now the universe has the waysand the means to help those way out ideas and dreams of yours come true. Thehardest part for some is to realise that it all doesn't happen at once, it is more ofa case that one thing will eventually lead to the other. Home and family mean alot to you and you will find that they have more of a need for company recently,so make time to show those you care for the love and affection they crave.

This week sees your energy levels returning to normal giving you a sense ofgusto and grit to your personality. If there has been anything building, thingsyou have wanted to say and haven’t, prepare for the outpour. You may evenfind yourself opening your mouth only to keep on talking until there is literallynothing left to say, however, be mindful of your delivery. You are standing upfor yourself now and that is very attractive to others.

Kym’s KitchenThis is such a great traditional Spanish meal. No side dishes of vegetables; it’s all inclusive. Although Ilike both the seafood and the meat paella, having both all in one meal is the best of both worlds. SoI’ve taken hints from everyone including Spanish family friends about how to make it, and this is theone for me. You have to invest in a large Paella pan though! Paul Young.

Slayer dies The mocking bird fights backThe author of classic ToKill A Mockingbird,Harper Lee, 87, is suingher literary agent's son-in-law, Samuel Pinkus, toclaim back the copyright ofthe book and is seekingunspecified damages.

She claims that he tookadvantage of her declininghearing and eyesight tosecure the book's copyrightand that he failed toproperly protect thecopyright after his father-in-law, Eugene Winick –who had represented MsLee’s interests since thebook was published in1960 through the firmMcIntosh and Otis –

became ill a decade ago.

The book – the onlynovel Ms Lee everpublished – tells the storyof two children growing upin a small southern UStown and addresses racialinjustice, as the children'slawyer father is selected todefend a black manaccused of raping a whitewoman. The man isconvicted despite hisobvious innocence. To Killa Mockingbird won thePulitzer Prize for fictionand is widely studied inschools. The film version, starring Gregory Peck, won three AcademyAwards.

Following thepremature endingof the Apollo moon

landings after Apollo 17in December 1972,NASA was stuck with aproblem. Three fullybuilt Saturn V rocketswere cluttering up thecar park. These weresupposed to have beenApollo 18, 19 and 20. Ok,one could be kept as amuseum piece at CapeKennedy, another couldbe sent to NASA’smission control inHouston Texas but whatto do with the third?

Then some brightengineersuggested that with only small

modifications the second stage of a SaturnV rocket could be emptied of its fuel tanksand be converted into a ready madehabitable space station. The plan was tolaunch Skylab into Earth orbit unmannedand then a few days later a crew of threewould be launched and dock with theorbiting space station. Skylab waslaunched on March 14th 1973, but fromday one it was cursed with a multitude ofproblems.

Severe damage occurred duringlaunch, including the loss of thestation's micro-meteorite protective

shield which was also meant to act as asunshield to help keep the station cool.Debris from the damaged shield thenclogged up the release mechanism thatwas supposed to extend two solar panel‘wings’ that supplied electricity to thestation. With no electricity thetemperature inside Skylab would becomeso hot that the plastic fittings would meltgiving off toxic fumes that would make ituninhabitable.

The launch of the first crew wasdelayed while a solution was figuredout. But time was against them; the

longer they left it the more damage waslikely to occur. Eventually on 25th March1973 Pete Conrad, Paul Weitz and JosephKerwin set off to carry out the first ever‘in-space repair’. Conrad was a veteranastronaut who had walked on the Moonwith Apollo 12 in December 1969 but forWeitz and Kerwin it was to be their firstspace flight.

Travelling in the same command andservice module that had been usedon Moon flights the astronauts

eventually rendezvoused with Skylab andcompleted a successful docking with it.Now they had to perform a series of space-walks first to fix a protective sheet to theoutside to act as a sunshield. Next thesolar panel was unfurled and began toproduce electricity. The astronauts couldnow enter the space station for the firsttime. Two weeks later Conrad and Kerwincarried out another spacewalk to try tofree the other stricken solar panel.Suddenly it sprang from its housing and

almost slung the astronauts away intospace and certain death.

The first crew remained on boardSkylab for 28 days carrying outrepairs both inside and outside the

space station. On 28th July the secondcrew Pete Conrad, Jack Lousma andOwen Garriott set off for their stint onboard Skylab. Conrad had also been aMoon walker with Conrad on Apollo 12but for Lousma and Garriott it was to betheir first space flight.

As the space ship approached Skylabfor docking a leak occurred in thecontrol systems. Repairs were

carried out but it was feared that a rescuemission would have to take place to rescuethe crew so a third rocket was rolled outonto the launch pad just in case. As ithappened the crew were able to fix theleak and spend a total of 58 days onSkylab. Much of the time was taken updoing medical experiments to discoverwhat effects living in space would have onthe body.

On November 16th the third andfinal crew of Gerald Carr, WilliamPogue and Edward Gibson would

spend Christmas 1973 in orbit in Skylab. It was during this mission that anunnamed crew member suffered fromhorrendous space-sickness but hid the factfrom NASA doctors for fear of the missionbeing scrapped. They spent 84 days inorbit before returning to Earth onFebruary 8th 1974.

Now the question arose, ‘what to dowith Skylab?’ It was intended thatthe Space Shuttle could be used to

move it into a higher orbit but delaysmeant that the Space Shuttle wouldn’t beready until the early 80’s. With no onboard engines or means to move itself,Skylab would be doomed. Gradually itsorbit decayed and it came burning throughthe Earth’s atmosphere on 11th July 1979.It eventually crashed in the Australiandesert close to Perth.

The Australian government issued afine of $400 for littering. NASA stillhasn’t paid up.

The flashes are in the form ofMorse Code, so one gets aseries of dots (short flashes)and dashes (longer ones). From one’s navigation chartit can be seen what code anyparticular lighthouse sendsout.Distance away, is calculatedusing triangulationSo again by using the

navigation charts one canmeasure the distancebetween two fixed pointsalong the coast, and calculatethe distance you are fromthem.

QUOTE: In trigonometryand geometry, triangulationis the process of determiningthe location of a point by

measuring angles to it fromknown points at either end ofa fixed baseline, rather thanmeasuring distances to thepoint directly (trilateration). The point can then be fixed,as the third point of atriangle, with one known sideand two known angles.

Opinion Comment&During my 30 years as aLondon mounted policemansailing was my hobby. Onmy retirement I bought ayacht and went off sailing.First the Med and then theCaribbean before returningto Greece where I spent 10summers working in theyacht charter business before“swallowing the anchor” andretiring ashore here in Spain. With many Channelcrossings, 15 Biscaycrossings and five Atlanticcrossings both East andWest, I have had someexperience with ‘lights’. Isuspect that you will havemany long and complicatedviews about navigation usinglighthouses etc. So perhapsa short summary from mewould help. Each ‘light’ whether it be alighthouse, lightvessel, buoyor beacon has its own uniquecharacteristics ie:-1. the distinctive way inwhich the light goes on andoff.

2. colour3. period: the time taken forone complete cycle of thecharacteristics4. elevation: the height ofthe light above MHWS.5. range: the distance thelight will ‘throw’ in normalvisibility. The characteristics areprinted alongside the lightsymbol on the navigationalcharts and also in nauticalalmanacs. Once a light hasbeen identified with the useof compass bearings, reference to the height tables, state of tide height, etc theposition of the vessel from the‘light’ can be determined andis known as ‘distance off’. Bytransferring all these factorson to your chart you candetermine your position inrelation to the light and moreimportantly the coast or pointof danger. In fog the ‘light’ source willalso sound a fog signal whichitself has its owncharacteristics but obviously

many things can affect thesesignals and much, muchgreater caution is need tonavigate by them. When I was studying for myRYA exams in the late 70’sand early 80’s the standardrequired for being able tonavigate in costal waters wasvery high and I rememberspending many hourspouring over charts andbooks to understand therequirements. Nowadays, ofcourse, much of this neededknowledge has beensuperseded with the adventof relatively cheap GPSreceivers, AIS etc or even thecommon I-phone, but thesecan’t replace the pleasure ofseeing the light of Brightonmarina ‘come up’ after acrossing from the Frenchcoast appearing exactlywhere it should have beenafter a dark night dodgingeast-west channel shippingand the tidal flows of theEnglish channel.

Paul Keller MijasIn your editorial you askeda very interesting question– distance off a knownreference point whilst atsea.Should you be sailing upthe coast from Marbella toMalaga at some point youwill see El FaroLighthouse. When it firstappears you take a compassbearing. Thirty minuteslater you take anothercompass bearing of El Faro.At the time of taking thesebearings you transfer thecompass bearings to your“chart”.You already know thecourse you are steeringfrom your ship’s compass,so this is then transferredto your chart. You will thenend up with a triangle fromthe shore to the boat whichwill then give you your“Distance off” a fixed point.El Faro is the fixed point

and you now have twobearings from the boat tothe lighthouse, hence thetriangle which you havedrawn on your chart. You mention that you couldlook it up on Google so trythis! Type in “CalculateDistance “off” a singlereference point” Choose theYou Tube explanation and Iam sure that it will explainmore fully.Sailing has been my life andit was lovely to read thatyou were asking a nauticalquestion.Hope this points you in theright direction. Best wishesand good sailing.

Editor says: These lettersare in reply to a question inmy column a couple of weeksago about how far away alighthouse was so, thankseveryone, I shall now feelsafer on a boat!

Dani Pedrosa, best of Spanish Dani Pedrosa won his firstMotoGP race of the season, leading a 1-2 Honda finishwith Marc Marquez at theSpain Grand Prix onSunday. Pedrosacompleted the 27 laps ofthe 2.74-mile Jerez Circuitwith relative ease aftertaking the lead from pole-sitter Lorenzo on lap six.

Lorenzo then had a racelong duel with Marquezuntil the last corner whenthe MotoGP newcomeralmost took out bothLorenzo and himself afterbarging into the Spanishfavourite. It had Lorenzooff the circuit for a merefraction of a second butthat was enough forMarquez to sneakby and take secondspot. It was the verysame corner thathad been renamedin Lorenzo'shonour on Saturday. And it was also atthis corner thatValentino Rossihad an incidentwith Gibernau inthe 2005 race.

Lorenzo was farfrom happy withthe young Marquezbut refused to

comment further justadding that “We will seewhat happens in Le Mans”.

`The Doctor ’ ValentinoRossi was a little furtherback in fourth place withBritain’s Cal Crutchlow infifth after strugglingthrough the pain barrierfollowing his qualifyingcrash on Saturday.

“Fifth place today is nota bad result consideringeverything that has goneon before but it's notexactly what we expected,”said Crutchlow. “I was fastall weekend but after thetwo crashes yesterday Ithink it's a very good resultto remain the best of therest.

“I did not feel veryconfident with the front-end in the race, but I thinkall Yamaha's struggled inthis area,” he added.

Brit Bradley Smithgained his maiden MotoGPtop ten finish at Jerez, although the series

newcomer admittedafterwards thathe was'disappointed' tofinish behindCRT rider AleixEspargaro.

The Tech 3Yamaha riderslashed

Espargaro'sadvantage to less

than a second in theclosing stages of therace but ultimately

ran out of time to mount achallenge for ninth.

I was asked this week bya novice player, who has avery limited bank roll of€30 wanting to play forreal money on one of theleading on line sites, whether he should playcash or tournaments. Theanswer is simple – playboth. With a small bankroll he must play themicro limit cash/ringgames of 1c/2c, also playthe double your money sitand go tournaments, sayat the €1 buy in. He needsto play both becausedifferent players havedifferent strengths whichcan make you a bettercash or tournamentplayer.

Phil Hellmuth who haswon many WSOPbracelets, all at Holdem,is probably one of the besttournament players ever.

As a cash player he hasnot really been up therewith the likes of DoyleBrunson whom, may Iadd, is also a greattournament playerwith many WSOPbracelets to hisname at variousformats.

With cash you need tobe aggressive from thestart. If you have the oddsto make a call or feelyou’re ahead you call, ifyou’re beat rebuy andcarry on with the game. However in a tournament(unless a rebuy format)you can't, one mistakeand you’re out!

I would have to thinkhard about laying downAK to a 4 bet in a cashgame but in tournamentplay in the early and mid

levels this would not be ahard fold, for the simplereason it is better to waitfor a better spot and hopeone of the two aggressiveplayers busts outladdering you up theleader board to a prize.

So my advice is playthe small sit. Gotournaments to test yourtight aggressive game andtry the micro cash gamesfor your loose aggressivestyle. However, alwaysremember it's selectiveaggressive play and goodhand selection that winslong term.

N.B.B.S. play La Duquesa.Sixteen players made thetrip to La Duquesa andwere blessed with perfectweather for golf. The coursewas in fair condition and itpresented an unknownlayout to the majority of theplayers.

Nearest the pin wascontested on all par threesand the results are asfollows:

Hole 3 Chris Gardner,Hole 5 Geoff Heading, Hole11 John Bamber, Hole 15not claimed and Hole 17 IanBrewer.

Nearest the pin in twoshots on Hole 12 notclaimed. Longest drive onHole 18 Nick Carwood.

Best team prize with 107

points Chris Gardner, SavRamayon, Ian Brewer andJoe King. Par threecompetition with 12 pointswas won by Ian Brewer.

In the day’s maincompetition, in third placewith 31 points was JoeKing, in second place with32 points was The New’sGeoff Heading and in firstplace with 36 points wasDell Allwood.

In last place with 8points and the winner of theplunger was Barry Doran. Iplayed with Barry and hehas been given a newnickname Barry the Bush, because if there was a bushanywhere on the course,

poor Barry was in it orbehind it. I laughed withmy other playing partnersall the way round.

All the members wouldlike to wish the very best toIan Brewer, as he isreturning to England forfamily reasons and lookforward to playing with himagain on his visits to Spain. Also our thanks go to Tinaat The Olive tree for thenibbles she supplied andputting up with us.

As always thanks toTerry Birtles, Joe King andIan Brewer for organisingthe event.

Ronnie O'Sullivan brushedaside Barry Hawkins 18-12to win his fifth worldsnooker championship andbecome only the third manto claim back-to-back titlesat the Crucible Theatre. The 37-year-old returningto the sport after a year-long absence, showed nosigns of rustiness over thetwo weeks of competition, culminating in acomfortable win over worldNo 14 Hawkins.

Taking nothing awayfrom O’Sullivan two-timechampion Mark Williams, who lost in the first round, said the standard was aslow as he had seen for 10

years. And the Welshmanwasn't alone, many peopleare of the opinion that thiswas an underwhelmingtournament, while manycontributors to snookerblogs and message boards

will tell you this might havebeen the poorest WorldChampionship ever.Finalist Hawkins believesO'Sullivan could go on tobeat Stephen Hendry'srecord of seven world titles.

Colin Montgomerie's induction into the World Golf Hall of Fame is richly deservedeven though he never won the major title he craved throughout an otherwiseglittering career. At Monday's ceremony in St Augustine, Florida, Monty wasinducted into a Hall of Fame – not greatness – despite some observers claimingthe absence of one of the big four titles and his failure to win a Tour event in theUnited States should have barred him from Hall of Fame status.

Gutless Málaga fail againaway from homeOver one thousand Málagasupporters made the shortjourney to Granada in thehope of a win to boost theirEuropean chances – that isproviding they can overturnthe ban imposed.

Granada, just a pointclear of the relegation pack, started well. Brahimi andIghalo came close to scoringon 12 minutes but Willymanaged to scramble the ballaway. Málaga´s keeper thenmade a great save fromNolito to keep Málaga in the

game. Málaga´s Isco andAntunes had weak efforts ongoal as Málaga lookedpedestrian all over the pitch. On 28 minutes Granada tookthe lead. Brahimi brokedown the right wing andIghalo got in front ofDemichellis to finish well atthe near post. A deservedlead and Granada nearlymade it two as El-Arabi shotjust wide. In the second halfMálaga were better butnever created many chances.

Granada substituteAranda had a great chance tomake the game safe but

Willy again saved with hislegs. An Antunes’ cross forMálaga late in the game hitthe crossbar and that wasabout as good as it got for thevisitors.

A poor performance andnow they face Real Madridon Wednesday night at9.30pm at the Bernabau, andthen at home on Sundaynight at 9pm against Sevillain another Andalucian derby.Málaga must improve or theseason will just fade awayand end in disappointment.
