By ROBYN BRISTOW Š Continued Page 2 Murray Taylor was loyal, generous, trusting, a mentor and a ‘‘dam good bloke’’. He was there for his staff in good times and in bad and when it mattered, just a couple weeks ago, several of them were there for him. Sadly there was little they could do to save their boss after tonnes of lime rubble buried him as he worked on a digger at a limeworks near Waikari. Mr Taylor was the director of Heathstock Haulage, a trucking company which ran the quarry on a lease from the Hurunui District Council and sold limestone to local contractors, dairy farmers and others for tracks. Four of his long serving team - Rod McKay, Murray Clemens (Clem), Neil Hislop and Ian Wright - gathered in Waikari last Friday to remember the man, whom they had worked for, over the years. All spoke of a committed Christian whom they respected and who trusted the ability of his staff to get on and get the job done. A Seventh Day Adventist, who did not drink alcohol, Mr Taylor would turn out at birthdays and staff functions, and enjoy social events, often being the last to leave. He would dig deep into his pocket if anyone was in financial strife and supported them through personal problems without judging any one of his team, some of whom ‘‘worked hard and played hard’’, they said. ‘‘It didn’t worry him a bit, no matter how hard we played, as long as we turned up Monday morning at 3.30am,’’ they said. Mr Taylor always made sure everyone was back in the yard on Friday afternoon and the men had the weekend off. ‘‘We were always home early on Friday.’’ His generosity saw him donate lime for the Medbury Racecourse during its early development, discount lime to a staff member even eight years after leaving the company, put on staff dinners and take them away for Christmas trips to places like Akaroa where there were always plenty of ‘‘toys for the boys’’ such as jet skis which got a ‘‘fair hammering’’. ‘‘He was loyal to guys who were loyal to him. We were just one big family and a very stable workforce. If someone was leaving back in the day it was big news. It was a scandal. Some left, some came back. ‘‘Apart from being a businessman he was one of the family and was supportive of our families,’’ they said. He employed locals and was a ‘‘huge’’ employer in the region when Heathstock Haulage was at its peak with around 42 staff and about 30 trucks. But Heathstock Haulage was not just trucks - there were graders, diggers, bulldozers and lime sowers. Clem says he was a ‘‘canny’’ business guy. He would buy a truck or bulldozer and then find work for it ‘‘rather than the other way around’’. He seemed to thrive on battling the Commercial Vehicle Unit if any of his team were pulled up for infringements. ‘‘He won more battles than he lost,’’ says Clem who ran the office for many years for Mr Taylor. Just one day back at the helm while Clem had to go away, was enough for Mr Taylor who then left it entirely up to Clem to organise how the operation was run. ‘‘He had altered my planner significantly. It was a bit annoying when I got back so I said its ‘either you or me running this place’ and he virtually left me alone after that,’’ said Clem. Mr Taylor and his wife Jill then concentrated their efforts on other ventures such as Ostrich farming, leaving Clem to it.

Concern over shifting crossing

Concern . . . Pedestrian crossingworries.

Greypower is concernedabout the loss ofapedestrian crossing in the centreofKaiapoi’s shopping centre.TheWaimakaririDistrictCouncil and

theKaiapoiCommunityBoardhaveapproved shifting the central pedestriancrossing to theMcDonald’s endof theshoppingarea.ButMiles Jackson,President ofGrey

PowerNorthCanterbury, says this couldputpedestrians, particularly olderpeopleandotherswithdisabilities, at risk.He says inaneffort to reduce theextra

distance theywouldhave towalkbetweenpedestrian crossings fromBlackwellscorner to theMcDonald’s roundabout theymayattempt to cross the roadwhere

therewill no longerbeapedestriancrossing.

Hebelieves that it ismoredangerous toresite themidway crossing to the southendof themain shopping centre than toleave itwhere it is becauseof thenotoriously busy roundabout atMcDonalds.Mr Jackson says at theother endof the

block theBlackwells’ cornerpedestriancrossing, which is sitedat thebaseof thebridge, means it is difficult forpedestriansto see traffic comingon to thebridgeandalso thebusyRavenQuayexits on toWilliamStreet at this spot.He isurging the council to rethink the

proposal in the interest of all pedestrians, particularly for theelderly andvulnerablepeopleof thearea.

River access for wheelchair fishermen

River access . . . Ron Stuart speaks during the opening ceremony at theMcIntosh’sWheelchair Fishing Platform at theWaimakariri River, near Kaiapoi, last Sundaymorning, with double amputee, Bruce Mote waiting to cast the first line from the platform.

Thebiggest grinat theMcIntosh’sWheelchairFishingPlatformopening, onthebanksof theWaimakaririRiver, nearKaiapoi last Sunday, belonged toBruceMote.Hehadwaited29 years for thismoment.

‘‘It’s very exciting,’’ he said.‘‘Going fishing is better thananti

anglers, whocomplainedabout thehighcost of fishing licences, that heonlyrenewedhis licenceevery twoyearsbecausehecouldonly access a fractionofthe river areas they could.Hehappened tomention this to a good

replied.Heestimated that therewouldbearound150otherwheelchairboundanglersheknewofwhowouldalsobekeentouse suchaplatform. But, hewasn’tholdingout toomuchhope, sincehehadbeen trying to achieve the same thing sincetheearlynineties. ‘‘We just kept gettingpushed fromonedepartment to another,’’he said. However, underMrStuart’s guidance,

operationwheelchair fishingplatform, sprang to life that day. It hasbeena longandcomplicated journey, madepossible bytheenergyand tenacity ofMrStuart, andmanyother volunteerswithina closecommunity, allworkinghard together toachieve something special.Theproject beganwitharchitectural

designerAndrewLill’s drawings andplans.Theywere submitted to theWaimakaririDistrictCouncil, but not approved.Thecouncil said they couldnot approve theplatformunless it hadametrehigh railaround it,whichwouldmake it impossiblefor aperson inawheelchair to fish from.Undeterredby this seemingly fatal

setback,MrStuart got amoreencouragingresult from theDepartment ofBuildingandHousing.‘‘Theyadvised that theoriginal concept

the sitewithMrStuart, hada lookat theplansand saidhis companycoulddo thework.‘‘Oh, andwewill pay for it too,’’ he told

MrStuart as theywere leaving the site.‘‘That blewmeaway,’’MrStuart said. However, justwheneverything seemed

tobe coming together the 2010and2011Canterburyearthquakes toreapart the siteandbrought all plans to ahalt.‘‘The riverbanks atMcIntosh’swere

Funding change forWaimak promotionsTheway promotion of theWaimakariridistrict’s threemain towns is funded isset to change.TheWaimakariri District Council has

set aside a budget of $68,290 in the LongTermPlan signed off last week to fundpromotions collectively for Rangiora,Kaiapoi andOxford. Previously thecouncil hasmade separate grants toRangiora Promotions, theKaiapoiPromotions Association (KPA) and theOxford Promotions Action Committee.Policy and customer servicemanager

SimonMarkham says two out of the threepromotion associations have beenstrugglingwith operations andadministrative duties, and theassociation presidents have soughtcouncil support to ‘‘relocatework to buysupport for services’’.By combining the collective funding of

$68,290 for the three positions, a singlerole could be created and it would notnecessarily need to be full time.He says should any of the associations

fold as a result of the review, communityevents such as Christmas parades couldbe coordinated byEnterpriseNorthCanterbury or picked up by local groups.

TheOxford Santa parade, for example, isorganised by theOxford Lions.Town centre portfolio holder Cr

Neville Atkinson says the idea is not totake things away from local people, but tobe efficient and effective and ‘‘to ensurefunds are going in the right places andservices are fair’’.He saysKaiapoi has around 500

businesses, with only 40 to 50 in the retailsector and themajority involved inservice industries. However, theKPAhas around 80

members and themajority of theassociation’s decisionmakers areretailers.Rangiora Promotions coordinator

KirstynBarnett is due to finish up herrole tomorrow, Friday, June 26, to takeup a new business opportunity.KPAhas previously employed two

people to share its coordinator role, however TheNews understands one ofthose people has recentlymoved on.Cr Atkinson andCr JimGerardwere

due to present a final recommendationon how to proceed at this week’s councilmeeting, following further engagementwith the promotion associations.

NIWA station installedVisitors to themouth ofHurunuiRiverinNorth Canterburymay have noticeda new addition to the landscape. It is amonitoring station that has

been installed byNIWA to collect dataon the natural dynamics of the rivermouth at this popular fishing spot. The station has two cameras

mounted on a pole at the end ofHurunuiMouthRd aswell as awaterlevel recorder in the lagoon. The cameras record an image every

15minutes during daylight tomonitorthe position, width and length of thelagoon outlet channel and the positionof the gravel barrier.NIWAhydrodynamics scientist

RichardMeasures says the aim of theproject is to develop amodel which

can be applied to any lagoon or hapuato assess the impacts of waterextraction, sea level rise and otherchanges to the rivermouth and lagoondynamics.‘‘If successful, this researchwill help

people predict and understand theimpact of potential changes on rivermouths,’’ saysMrMeasures.TheHurunuiRiver is under

pressure from irrigation andMrMeasures says this researchmay helpunderstand the effects of water use inthe catchment. It was the perfect sitefor amonitoring station because itoffered an unimpeded view of the rivermouth. The stationwill be in place for about

three years.

Just before Christmas last year anearly seven foot Americanmanwith aface known to thousands apparentlyvanished.Thisman, hugely talentedNBA star

Larry Sanders disappeared, walkingaway from a contract worth $USD 21million over three years.Noone knewwhere hewas orwhy

he left a jobwhichwouldmake himrich, famous and idolised.Because I amnot a basketball fan the

whole incidentmade no impression onme at all. However aftermonths of silence in

an online video a softly spokenman ina beanie appeared.‘‘I’mLarry Sanders. I’m a person. I’m

a father, I’m an artist. I’m awriter. I’ma painter. I’m amusician. Andsometimes I play basketball,’’ he said.Larry had been in a programme for

peoplewith depression, anxiety andmood disorders he had been usingmarijuana to try to cope. Two things he said stood out forme.

The first was about hismoney, job andfame.‘‘I think playing basketball is seen to

be a desirable, lucrative job. Howcould you be unhappy there?Forme,

the values and relationshipswith thepeople I love aremy real riches. That’smy lastingwealth.’’When Jesuswas asked aboutmoney

he never held back: ‘Get rid of it all, you’ll lose it when you die anyway,’’ hesaid.Jesus also added a rider: ‘‘True

wealth and happiness is found inrelationships, first with God, and thenwith those around you. It’s found indoing everything you can tomake theirlives better nomatter who they are.’’Larry’s second commentwas

‘‘People really like labels. Just don’tneglect the little word ‘and’. You sayI’m selfish. And I’m loving. And I’mcaring. And I’m scared sometimes, andI’m also brave. We are allmore thanjust one thing’’.We like tomake categories and put

people in boxes friend, nurse, AllBlack, doesn’t like that food, loud, hasa big nose. Sometimes it is hard toremember the people around us aremore than the boxeswe put them in,but we do need to keep looking for the‘and’. Andwe do need to rememberthat Jesus taught us true happiness isnot found in our possessions but in thepeople around uswho care for us.

IHC has a new volunteer coordinator inNorth Canterbury and is keen for newrecruits.Jackie Cronin has been in the role for

twomonths and says there are plenty ofopportunities for volunteers to getinvolved. She spoke to TheNews aheadof VolunteerWeekwhich runs from June2128.IHCNorth Canterbury launched a new

‘‘friends’’ initiative last year and quicklygained 11 volunteers. However, by thetime Jackie took over this number haddropped to five.Volunteer friends arematched upwith

peoplewithmental disabilitiesaccording to common interests.‘‘I have interviewed another four, but

there is room formore. The ideal numberfrom the perspective ofmy role beingpart time is to get up to 25 volunteers, butwewould like lotsmore than that.’’Volunteers complete a short interview

and a police check and the expectation isa commitment of at least two hours afortnight, but ‘‘it’s like any friendship, it’sabout whenever they are able to gettogether’’.‘‘There are lots of opportunities for

peoplewith all different sorts ofinterests. The friendship programme isspending oneonone timewith someoneand doing things you both enjoy, so thatcan encompass anything, includingswimming, going to the library or goingout for coffee.’’Volunteers are also needed for a skill

based programme, where people teach askill to a personwith a disability whowants to learn. This can require a two tothreemonth commitment and couldinclude something as simple as catchinga bus, shopping for clothes or learninghow to use an iPad.Jackie says helping improve the life of

someonewith a disability can be very

rewarding.‘‘It’s like any volunteering, it has that

feel good factor. You’re helping someoneelse have a better life and to enjoy theirlifemore.’’Jackie is originally fromAuckland,

❛ At Loburn, the matchbetween Oxford and Ashley was

even closer with SeanThompson having to land apenalty kick deep into injury

time to give Oxford a 2220 win.❜

Saracens appeared to be facing amammoth task in its first defence of theDeans Shield in theNorth Canterburysenior rugby competition. It had to take the shield to Cheviot and

defend it against thewellperformedGlenmark side that is known to treasurethe trophy. But Saracens proved that they really

have embraced thewinning habit thiswas their eighthwin in consecutiveweeks when it emerged victorious 2622.This win, more than any other, signalledSaracens’ emergence as a genuinechampionshipcontender.Glenmark’s

supporters wouldhave been feelinggood about life forthe first threequarters of thematch at Cheviot. Not onlywere thedrizzly conditionsthat greeted theplayers at kickofflifting the spirits ofthe local farmerswho are facing droughtconditions in the area, but theGlenmarkteam soon stamped their authority on thematch. Two converted tries, one to impressive

halfback, Brent Daly and one toRobSelby, plus a penalty, gave the home teama seemingly comfortable 176 lead at thebreak.WhileDion Jones added a thirdpenalty for Saracens soon after theresumption, a third try to Glenmarkextended their lead to 13 points goinginto the last quarter. In the last quarter the Saracens

forwards began to take control of thegame. Saracens prop PeterManahiwrestled his way over the line aftertaking a quick tap kick and after a longperiod attacking theGlenmark lineSaracens lockMark Smith drove over fora try. Both tries were converted by Jones. In the 75thminute Jones kicked a

further penalty to give Saracens a fourpoint lead and Jones a 100 percent goalkicking return for the day.The last fiveminuteswere a nervous

time for Saracens becauseGlenmark hasoften had the ability to get itself out ofjail late in the game. Its causewas nothelped by picking up a yellow card and

having to finish thelast fiveminuteswith 14men.Saracens clung

on for a significantvictory. At Loburn, the

match betweenOxford andAshleywas even closerwith SeanThompson havingto land a penaltykick deep into

injury time to give Oxford a 2220win.For the first halfhour the teams’

respective goalkickers, Thompson forOxford andLance Taylor for Ashley, traded penalty goals. One of those goalswas kicked after Ashley’s lock,WarrenRean, was ordered from the field for analleged stomping offence. The loss of one of their senior forwards

seemed to galvanise Ashley into actionand after a good backlinemovement,JarrodHeap, bullocked his way over fora try.Right on halftimeOxford responded

whenLoganTelfermade a halfbreakand put Gareth Price in for a try, givingOxford a 1411 lead at the break. At the 60minutemark a try to Shark

Prescott extendedOxford’s advantage toeight points but a courageous effort bythe Ashley forwards kept its team in goalkicking range andTaylor landed threefurther penalties within tenminutes togive Ashley a onepoint leadwith fourminutes remaining.Oxford immediately swept on to attack.

It missed one penalty attempt but withtime up on the clock, referee StevenLaird, whowas refereeing his fiftiethseniormatch, awardedOxford anotherpenalty and this time SeanThompsonresponded to the pressure andmade nomistake. This was a cruel blow for Ashleywho had played threequarters of thematchwith 14men. But Oxford scoredtwo tries to one and from that perspectivecould be said to have deserved their win.AtMandeville, Kaiapoi proved too

strong for Ohoka. With Sean Swartscoring forKaiapoi virtually from thekickoff. The visitors got rather overconfident and failed to treasure thepossession they received. Creditmust goto theOhoka packwhich stuck to its taskmanfully. With half an hour to play therewas no change to the 106 halftime scorebut thenwing, AshAndrews gathered inaBrookRetallick crosskick to score andflankerRyanNesbit and prop, ColinMurchison, both scored from lineoutdrives to giveKaiapoi the bonus pointvictory that theywere seeking. Two particularly enthrallingmatches

await next Saturday. Kaiapoi host Ashleyandwhilemost would expect Ashley towin, Kaiapoi does have the potential toupset. If that happens the playingthrough championswould be in realdanger of not qualifying for the semifinals.Glenmark hosts Oxford at Omihi. When

these two teamsmet in the combinedcompetitionGlenmark gained a deservedvictory, but it was Oxfordwho ended upwith the higher ranking in thatcompetition. If Oxfordwas to beatGlenmark, it would really put thepressure onGlenmark towin itsremaining threematches to guaranteeprogressing to the semifinals.
