Words from the President
Dear PASS Alumni,
Welcome to the first of many editions of the PASSED Alumni Newsletter.
Fifteen years ago seven Filipino Americans came together to form a group called the
Philippine American Student Society. PASS has grown leaps and bounds through the
years and with the best yet to come. One thing still remains the same, PASS is and
will always be a family here at MSU. Whether you are just down the road from East
Lansing or back in the P. I., we haven’t forgotten about our PASS family members
that have moved into the real world, and we sure hope you haven’t forgotten about us.
This is why we have created this newsletter so that you can stay connected to your
PASS family at MSU. We hope this finds you well in your busy life, and we hope you
take the time to reminisce about the great memories you had while you were here and
take a look at what PASS is doing now and what it has become. Stay down, stay
brown, stay connected. Isang Mahal.

The Newsletter for PASS Alumni
PASSED
In honor of our PASS alumni, we have
created a newsletter to inform you of what your
PASS family members at MSU have been doing
lately. We chose to name the newsletter PASSED,
which stands for Pilipino American Students Society
Eternally Devoted, in recognition of the PASS
alumni who are already united in the informal
PASSED network.
As a PASSED member, we want your
feedback to make this newsletter better. If there is
anything you would like to see in future newsletters,
please let us know by emailing us at
[email protected]. We are currently trying to extend
our PASSED network to create continuity as
members move from PASS to PASSED, and
provide for a lifelong sense of family and belonging.
So if you know other PASSED members, please
send us their information or forward this newsletter
to them.
Maraming salamat!

In this Alumni page, we would like to post anything that our Alumni have been doing. It is still in the
making, so whatever you want on it we can do. Maybe you’d like to see where your fellow alumni have moved
to, what they’re doing, and if there’s anything interesting they want to share. Let us know! It’s your page!

New Fundraiser
With Jay Garcia as our cook along with his
helpers, we are going to start sharing home cooked
Sunday dinners once or twice a month. This way
those living on campus can have a dinner with those
living off-campus together. Not only will this be a
fundraiser, but it will also serve as a social event.
Our kickoff for this even is January 21!
Even though it’s a Saturday, we wanted to kick this
event off with viewing the Manny Pacquiao match
against Eric Morales. More information will be
posted.
Halo Halo Coordinators
This year’s “Halo Halo” event has been
handed to two of our freshmen. Our co-coordinators
are Chris Cater and Brian Marzan. They have
already started their plans for a great show! Watch
out for updates and come out to the show, April 15!
What’s Up with PASSED?
We would like to start a webpage just for
PASSED. We would love to know where our
PASSED members are and how they are doing!
Please send us your information to
Ate/Kuya Program
Hi, everyone. I am Dennis Zurbano, the
2005-2006 Social Chair. As Social Chair, I am the
Ate-Kuya Program Coordinator. This program, like
the Big Brother-Big Sister Program, pairs up new
freshmen with older members of PASS. These Ates
and Kuyas keep in touch with the freshman adings
throughout the year. This year, the program has
emphasized communication between the ates and
kuyas and their adings. We also have had several
outings, like our Bubble Tea Social and Christmas
shopping at Meridian Mall. Next semester, I hope to
have more programs to further incorporate the
freshmen into the PASS family. I want to end the
year with a dinner with everyone in the Ate-Kuya
Program. This program is an intricate part of
keeping the freshmen interested in PASS. One of
PASS's values is the 'Development of Younger
Members'. My hope is to have freshmen stay with
PASS so that our club can pass on its message.
Filipino Culture Week Filipino Culture Week will be held January
16-21.
This first ever Filipino Culture week was
created by Asian Studies with the help from PASS
and the Philippine American Community of Greater
Lansing (PACGL). The week will consist of a
cultural performance from the PACGL, speakers,
and movies. It is our hope that this will create a
better awareness of Filipinos on campus and our
culture to others who may be interested or to those
who may know nothing of our history, traditions,
and beliefs.

During Party at the Aud, though it was crowded, we were able to meet and recruit new people. There was the
usual free stuff, good weather, new faces, old faces, dances, music, and just a great atmosphere everywhere.
During this time, we handed out flyers, displayed our PASS board, and showed a PowerPoint presentation of what
PASS is all about.
Welcome Week this year, just like every year, was just crazy and straight up fun! This was the time to bring
out new people, get to know them, and show the chill side of the PASS family. It was good time to relax, get to
know the newbies, and have fun before the school year began.
This year, APASO held their welcome reception at the back of Shaw to start off the new school year and get
all the affiliate groups together. This year’s theme was a carnival theme. Each affiliate group ran game booths at
their tables and had another opportunity to meet new members.

Recap
Just like the beginning of every school year, PASS has been busy recruiting, planning, and executing.
From Welcome Week activities, to off-campus activities, to conferences, to collaborations, to the well-known
Filipino American History Month, the PASS family has really come together and enjoyed many bonding
moments this semester.

Our first general body meeting had a really good turn out. We introduced the new eboard through personal
introductions and a little video. We also took this chance to get to acquainted or reacquainted with each other.
Everyone had a great time!
This year, PASS’s annual camping event was held at the Irish Hills Kampground in Cement City, Michigan.
Last year we also went to that same camping site and had as good a time as before. 10 people went camping; we
even had a visitor from Cincinnati come up for the fun. We boated on the lake, played with sticks and fire, messed
around on the playground, had a mini game of volleyball and had an interesting time cooking a dinner of hot dogs
and hamburgers. Also, the October 8th
weekend was Boo Bash Weekend at the campground. All the camp sites
were set up in a Halloween theme along with trick or treating and a haunted house. Unfortunately, PASS didn’t
help out in the trick or treating festivities but Kevin Belen did entertain the people walking by with his glow
sticking abilities. We did manage to light PASS on fire ☺ Despite the forecast of a very cold weekend, it was a
good time overall.
As an affiliate group of APASO, PASS eboard attended the APA Leadership Retreat they held at the Hannah
Community Center. During the retreat, we got to meet other eboards of other affiliate groups and listen to speakers
like Dr. John Lee. With PASS member and APASO president Ian Gallardo and his co-president Bhavisha Bhalsod,
the retreat ran smoothly and effectively.
This year PASS decided to participate in “Taste of Asia”. This event was held in the Holden Heritage Room.
With our very own cook Jay Garcia and his helpers, we were able to bring chicken adobo, eggrolls, pancit canton,
and, of course, rice! Everyone who attended were able to leave with a full stomach.

We tried something new this year, a collaborated general body meeting with the Coalition of Indian
Undergraduate Students. We wanted this to be a fun event, social, so that everyone can meet new people. The
meeting was “Family Feud” themed. With questions that were half about pop culture and half of India and Filipino
facts, everyone got into the game and involved.
With the very generous donation from our PASS advisor John Hoffschneider (aka Junior), our general body
meeting before everyone left for Thanksgiving break was a chill Thanksgiving dinner of Popeye’s chicken, biscuits,
coleslaw, and mashed potato and gravy. After sharing what were thankful for, we also watched clips from this
year’s camping trip and FACT variety show.

FACT: Filipino Americans Coming Together November 4-6
Just like every year, PASS attened the annual
FACT conference at UIUC. From bonding, to
workshops, to dancing at the club to “Since You’ve
been Gone” by Kelly Clarkson, it was a fun
experience to both new and current members.
Thanksgiving Dinner November 17
There were three stations set up at this general body meeting. Splitting the general body into three groups,
they rotated around the three stations. These stations included topics on “ The Evolution of the Barong,”
“Filipino Americans,” and a Filipino Trivia game of “True or False”.
Graduate Student Raymund Narag came from the Philippines to study Criminal Justice at MSU. He spent 8
years in jail in the Philippines for a crime that he didn’t commit. Raymund came to tell his inspirational story about
the justice system in the Philippines along with the Filipino political system. He also had a slideshow of pictures
from the jail that he stayed at. It was a very captivating story for everyone to hear. He will be speaking again,
sometime during Filipino Culture Week (January 16-21).
We chose to ask the question “how did you/your family come to America?” during this meeting. Lem Goopio
and Lindsay Yruma set up a short slide show about Filipino immigration to the USA and we opened the meeting to
discussion about our own family’s immigration story. It was interesting for all to hear the different stories, whether
it was an easy or hard experience, who helped the in immigration process, and it reinforced the thankfulness that we
all have for being in America and what it took to come here.
This year’s Date for a Day auction was held in collaboration with Korean Students United. With a Mardi Gras
theme, each buyer got strings of beads for each person they bought. As always, this was a nice get together for both
organizations and a good fundraiser for PASS. After the date auction PASS headed out to a masquerade party Club
Xcel to dance the night away with Sigma Lambda Beta. It was a great time.

Filipino American History Month As we all know, October is Filipino American History Month. It is during this time that we take a look
at not only increasing awareness about our history and culture, but also into enriching ourselves. And even with
a busy PASS and academic schedule, we were still able to have a very successful month.
