Summer Mode at Binkley Baptist Church Dear Binkley friends, I am writing this on what I suddenly realize is the first official day of summer. Carolinians may wonder what it is we’ve had the last two months, but officially, up in Washington DC or wherever they set these dates, it is just getting started. Now. Summer! For those who might have the general impression that all grows quiet in a college town in the summer, a visit to Binkley Baptist Church in Chapel Hill would be a good corrective. Some churches might have to do “Christmas in July” just to spice things up in the sleepy summertime. No such need here. Not only is it the season to celebrate twenty-five years of beautiful pipe-organ music, in addition it is time for Vacation Bible School, (late June), Baptist Youth Camp (early July), an all- church retreat (mid-July) and a yard sale with our friends from Barbee’s Chapel (mid-August). And that’s just the “big” events. In addition, while we don’t have church school in the summer time per se, a 9:45 AM informal worship setting makes lots of room for interactive learning, conversation and singing for all ages, in addition to our usual morning worship (11 AM year-round). It surely isn’t sleepy here in June, July or August. At the same time there is some- thing different about this season in our life together. It is as if we all somehow know in our bones it is a good time to shift gears, try something new, get to know folk we haven’t been as well acquainted with as some others. As a cream-colored rose blooms, providing shade to the head of St. Francis (the statue) in our church courtyard, it is a great time to shift out of “business as usual” mode, having a little more time for enjoying each others’ presence, a little more time for “kicking back”, and perhaps a little more time to appreciate the wonder and beauty of God’s creation. For me a slightly lower density of evening meetings means more time to pick up the guitar. And I look forward to a little spell on the coast of Maine, in a cabin overlooking a tidal basin that feeds into the Atlantic, where Lynn and I intend to do a fair amount of sitting still. I’ve noticed most of you try to steal away some time or another: we seem to do it in shifts. It is my prayer for each of you-- children, youth and adults-- that the summer of 2012 may provide time to grow in the spirit; time to be refreshed in body and mind; time to offer service in some way different than usual; and time to make at least one new friend. It isn’t a sleepy summer at your church! But it is one that promises all these forms of renewal, and perhaps even an opportunity for a fresh encounter with God, when we least expect. Whether you are vacationing, working, studying or retreating, may you find respite, renewal and revelation. In Christ’s Peace, Peter JB Carman, Minister

Summer Mode at Binkley Baptist Church

Dear Binkley friends,

I am writing this on what I suddenly realize is the first official day of summer.

Not only is it the season to celebrate twenty-five years of beautiful pipe-organ music, in addition it is time for Vacation Bible School, (late June), Baptist Youth Camp (early July), an all-church retreat (mid-July) and a yard sale with our friends from Barbee’s Chapel (mid-August).

At the same time there is some-thing different about this season in our life together.

HABITAT PRAYERS RECEIVED AND APPRECIATED: This past June 11-16, nine Binkley folks spent a week working with the East Cooper Habitat for Humanity affiliate in Mt. Pleasant, SC. Before we departed we asked for your prayerful support for our journey and our work. On behalf of the hard working crew I want to say thank you for that support. With God’s help, we were able to travel safely to and fro while experiencing tremendous thundering rainstorms on the way down. With God’s help we were afforded hospitable housing by a sister church in Isle of Palms. With God’s help, Marlene Dickison, Sherri Davis, Kevin Ramer, Thant Sin, Max Sloan, Keith Ramer, Lena Hudock, Lydia and Dale Osborne were able to paint (nearly) the entire interior of a house, install insulation under the entire house, hang doors, a vanity and some lights, dig a sewer line trench and a water line trench and dig out two areas where concrete will be poured. Through all our work, we were able to develop stronger relationships with one another and grow closer together. We look forward to presenting materials from our trip later this summer. Perhaps you can join us next year. Dale Osborne

WELCOME NEW BINKLEY MEMBERS!

Karen Stout joined the church on March 25, 2012. She has been attending for a while, and credits Dale Osborne for first telling her about the church. She has two grown children and we are delighted she has chosen to join us as a new member.

On May 20, seven people were baptized. One was Isaac Kukuchi who joined Binkley in January with his wife Marie Angela. Also being baptized were Sophia Shih and Chai-Yi Cheng. Chai-Yi is a graduate student at UNC; Sophia has completed her graduate studies there. Both were raised in Taiwan and have been attending Binkley since 2009. Four young people from church families have been attending the discipleship class and have also chosen to join the church and be baptized. They are Jessica Rabalais, Sophi Nissler, Linnea Van Manen, and Alex Swanson-Boyd. We warmly welcome all of these people to Binkley.

YARD SALE AIMS TO "CREATE HOME"

Everyone needs and deserves a comfortable home and this year's Binkley-Barbee's Yard Sale on August 18 aims to do that in many ways. By virtue of a unanimous vote at the church in conference on June 17 and on the recommendation of the Racial Reconciliation Committee, Board of Outreach and Church Council, the Yard Sale

will provide safe housing for children and adults in our community and throughout the state by supporting the Interfaith Council and the Central Children's Home. A portion will also go to the PTA Thrift Shop.

But that's not all! By de-cluttering or downsizing, you too are creating home. I've been joyfully going through drawers, closets and the bonus room and packing bags and boxes for weeks, imagining what my home will feel

once the useful but unwanted items of clothing, electronics, accessories, books and more are gone! Look around your house and imagine less. It really allows you to breathe more easily, I promise. And imagine the homes that can be created by our shoppers on August 18! Your dishes, curtains, knick-knacks, books and more can

enrich someone else's living space and turn it into home. So keep sorting, storing and signing up! Questions? Email Ruth Ann and Tim Ross, [email protected], or Brenetta Simpson

THE ULTIMATE GREEN WEIGHT LOSS PROGRAM IS COMING TO THE BINKLEY-BARBEES DOCK!

You may ask; how can I shed myself of hundreds of unwanted pounds in a truly “green” way? Simply reach into your overstuffed attics, closets and storage units and pull out everything that you aren’t using anymore . Let the

Collectibles Room help lighten your load of tons of artwork, collections from your wild cousins, Great Aunt Mae’s silverware, and even things from the ‘nifty fifties’ . This is a great time to streamline your home and give yourself some breathing room. We will start accepting items on August 4th and continue to unburden you until August 17th. So, pick a cool morning and start your family’s weight loss program now! For an added bonus, you can tone up your arms and possibly lower your blood pressure by pre-polishing the silver pieces before

dropping them off at the church, or feel free to join us in the Collectibles room for a polishing party. We would love to have your help! To volunteer to help in Collectibles please contact Judy Scott at 919-967-7361

or Susan Resnik at 919-967-5634.
