Hampton Lucy and Charlecote WI’s Centenary Oak Tree

Kath Clarke, President of Hampton Lucy and Charlecote WI, welcomed members and local residents to the planting of their

Centenary Oak Tree in The Spinney, Hampton Lucy. The tree was

presented by the Warwickshire Federation to mark the Centenary of

the local WI. Hampton Lucy and Charlecote WI has completed commemorative tree-planting in the two villages as far back as the

1960s, and Kath referred to the link between the oak tree and royalty;

King John, Edward 1, Elizabeth 1 and Charles 2. In ancient times, oaks were considered sacred to the God of Thunder and were

reputedly struck by lightning more than any other trees! She

expressed the hope this would not be the case, and that this oak tree

would flourish and give pleasure over the centuries to come. KCl

WW1 Armistice Commemorated

In most churches around the nation, the centenary of the Armistice of WW1 was

marked by remarkable

displays of poppies, art work and decorations. St

Mary’s, Warwick, had a

stunning display featuring thousands of handmade

poppies, made and

displayed by many local

organisations, including a substantial contribution by

local school children. A

large proportion of the poppies, many of them

beautifully knitted, were

crafted by Warwickshire WI members and the overall result was impressive,

colourful and poignant. We really did remember them! AJW

The Parish Letter

Dear Friends,

So what is Christmas really about?

I guess it means different things for different people?

Getting family together? A few days of self-indulgence?

Giving gifts to those we care about to show our appreciation of them? At that level it does not need to be

seen as in any way religious.

Yet, we are all familiar with the Christian Story. Many

would probably say - as would I - that Christmas is about ‘celebrating the birth of Jesus, the founder of the

Christian faith’. Of course, we don’t simply celebrate his

birth as people might celebrate the birth of William Booth, the founder of the Salvation Army or Baden

Powell, the founder of the Scout movement. They were

good men who founded organisations that did a lot of

good. But, as they themselves would have said, Jesus was not just another human being establishing another

human organisation but rather He was God himself

coming among us. Along with the idea that Jesus rose

From the Registers

Wedding: Hampton Lucy Saturday, 20 October Joseph Greenfield and Rebecca Bugg

from the dead, this is probably the most amazing claim that Christianity makes. The claim is that God is so

interested in and concerned about us and our world that

He came among us to share this life with all its joys and

sorrows. And that implies that He is not out there somewhere watching what we are up to and waiting to

catch us out., Instead, He stands alongside us to support

us in difficult times and so can get caught up in the tough bits of life.

So, one of the most amazing things about Christmas is

that it speaks of a God who involves himself in our world

while, at the same time, being all around and beyond it. And that has a profound effect on the Christian way of

seeing the world. As one Christian once wrote, False

religion says: Fear not, trust in God, and none of the things you fear will happen to you. Real religion says:

Fear not, the things you are afraid of may well happen

but they are nothing to be afraid of.

Happy Christmas and a peaceful New Year!

The Prayer Book Society The Prayer Book Society will be holding its traditional service of hymns, readings and Collects for Advent in St Peter

ad Vincula Church, Hampton Lucy, on Saturday, 1 December, at 2.30 p.m. Everybody is very welcome and is invited

to join us for tea afterwards. This is a chance to reflect on some fine hymns and readings on the real meaning of Christmas, before the tinsel, lights and present-buying gets into top gear. PB

Charlecote & District Lions Club Here we go again! Christmas is coming and the

Lions will once again be out and about with Santa,

his ‘little helpers’, and his sleigh! Hopefully, the weather will be a little kinder to us this year. We

look forward to meeting you all and I’m certain that Santa

will bring along his sack full of sweeties! Please help us to support local organisations and charities with your kind

donations. We shall be out and about the district from

Wednesday, 5 December, and Santa will touch down in

Hampton Lucy on Tuesday, 11 December, and in Loxley on Friday, 14 December. On behalf of all the Lions, I would

like to wish you all a very merry Christmas and to thank

you very much for your generosity during 2018. AS

Hampton Lucy and Charlecote WI The meeting on 7 November was our AGM and Kath Clarke was re-elected President. Jeryl Stone stood down

as Secretary and was elected Vice-President. Kath reported that the centenary bunting was almost complete. Warwickshire Federation is supporting the Air Ambulance and it was unanimously agreed that, at the

December meeting, members will place donations for that charity in the WI Christmas Post box instead of Christmas

cards. The meeting on 5 December, 7.00pm for 7.30pm in Hampton Lucy Village Hall, will be our Christmas Party,

featuring a bring-and-share supper and entertainment entitled Elvis Comes to Hampton Lucy. The launch of the centenary bunting will take place at the 9 January meeting, followed by a competition entitled My Prettiest Jug. Ginny Davis will

then give a talk entitled History of Crime. The New Year Supper, 1919 style, will be on 16 January in Charlecote Village

Hall at 7.00pm with Terry Welch, magician, providing the entertainment. PT

Charlecote Park News

Charlecote Park’s grounds, shop and Orangery Tea-room will remain open (extreme weather permitting!) every day this

winter except Christmas Day. Wrap up warm, blow away the cobwebs with a winter walk, and give the family some space away from the central

heating. We hope we’ll see lots

of our local families over

Christmas. You’ll need to pre-book tickets for the house for

December weekends. Our First

World War theme is very much a celebration of the end of the

war, although it was a poignant

time for the Lucys and for all the estate’s families. Our Plant

Centre is open, Fridays to

Mondays in December, for

Christmas trees and natural wreaths. There are plenty of

ideas for Christmas shopping in

the Servants’ Hall shop (open every day from 10.30am) where

you’ll find gifts, decorations,

and food and drink for all tastes.

Gift membership is available from our Visitor Reception team, giving the lucky recipient unlimited free admission all year to over 500 special places. All of your purchases help to fund our work looking after Charlecote. The house itself

will be closed from 25 December, reopening on 16 February - the beginning of half term. While the house is closed, the

house team will be able to erect scaffold towers to get to those hard-to-reach spots during the winter deep-clean. MGl

Brass and Bangs at Compton Verney Why not join us on Sunday, 16 December, 2.00pm to

5.00pm, to celebrate Compton Verney’s successful 2018

year of exhibitions and events with traditional Christmas carols performed by the brilliant musicians of Royal Spa

Brass, culminating with a Festive Firework Finale? Gaze

at the heavens and gasp in delight at a spectacular display before Compton Verney hibernates for the winter. This

event is included in a Day Ticket and is free for Members

and Annual Pass Holders. For more seasonal events at

Compton Verney see page 5. Follow @ComptonVerney

on Twitter, [like] the Compton Verney Facebook page, or

go to www.comptonverney.org.uk for more information. TJ

Loxley Meets the Avengers

Another very successful and well-supported Loxley Village Bonfire Night was held, raising money for the Friends of Loxley School. This year’s theme was The Avengers, with our two friendly skeletons fighting it out to light the bonfire.

I’d like to thank all those who attended and helped make this a safe and enjoyable evening: all our volunteers, Ettington

First Response, Wellesbourne Lions, and, of course, Peter Gregory-Hood. What will the theme be next year?? NC

Handel’s Messiah

Handel’s Messiah heralds the start of the Christmas season and Stratford-upon-Avon Choral Society will be

performing it on Saturday, 15 December at 7.30pm in Holy

Trinity Church, Old Town, Stratford-upon-Avon, accompanied by the Regency Sinfonia. Fleur Moore-

Bridger (soprano), Sacha Fullerton (alto), James Atherton

(tenor), and Jimmy Holliday (bass), will be the soloists, Benedict Wilson will play the continuo, and the conductor

will be Music Director, Stephen Dodsworth. Tickets, £15

(adults) or £8 (students), are available at the Holy Trinity

bookstall, by phone on 01608 682409, via [email protected] or at the door. Up to

two children under 16 are admitted free of charge if

accompanied by an adult. For more information, phone Elizabeth Hunter on 01789 840329 or go to

www.stratfordchoral.org.uk. EH

Hampton Lucy School We have been busy marking the 100th anniversary of the end

of World War I. Pupils have been learning about different

aspect of World War I, including the roles different people undertook, the use of purple poppies to remember animals, and

designing and building tanks. On, Friday, 19 October, children

in Years 4, 5 and 6 visited the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire and saw memorials linked to World War I,

including the Gallipoli campaign, and memorials remembering

the work done by women and the Post Office. They then

visited the Armed Forces Memorial and had an opportunity to take part in an Act of Remembrance, with readings and a

minute’s silence. We held a Family Service in Church on

Armistice Day. Pupils, parents, carers and staff had been busy making poppies out of a range of materials and they were used

to decorate the Church. It was lovely to see our children attend

this moving service with the local community, surrounded by over 100 poppies. Our Christmas Service will be held in St

Peter’s on Thursday, 20 December, at 2.30pm. It will be an

opportunity to thank Mrs Smith for her incredible service to

our school and to wish her a happy retirement. Staff and pupils would like to wish you all a merry and safe Christmas. HH

Loxley Primary School

On Wednesday, 7 November, Loxley Primary School pupils walked down to

the village war memorial to commemorate this special centenary of

remembrance. Huddled under their umbrellas, the children listened carefully as Rev’d David led a short service, which included the reading of

the names of all the villagers who have lost their lives to war. One of the

youngest pupils, Otis, laid a special poppy wreath created by the children from Class 1 using recycled materials. It was lovely to have some residents

join us for our Remembrance gathering and the children and I would like to

thank them for attending. This special service was a fitting way to remind all

of our children of the importance of honouring the sacrifices that were made during war, and to instil hope and peace in their hearts as the next generation.
