Gardening It’s that time of year when we all look outside and start to think about our outside

spaces. Whether you have acres of land or do container gardening on a balcony, the

Round Lake Library and its Malta branch have information that can help. A few of

our newer titles include:

Armitage’s Garden Perennials: Second Edition, Fully revised and Updated by

A.M. Armitage. Armitage is a noted authority on plants.

Planting the Dry Shade Garden: The Best Plants for the Toughest Spot in your

Garden by Graham Rice, will help those with lots of shade make

the most of their space.

For those apartment dwellers with a green thumb, pick up Small-

Space Container Gardens by Fern Richardson, for handy tips on

growing herbs, flowers and even fruit.

Are you bothered by critters in your garden? Neil Soderstrom’s

Deer Resistant Landscaping: Proven Advice and Strategies for Outwitting

Deer and 20 Other Pesky Mammals, might be just what you need.

Landscaping for Privacy: Innovative Ways to Turn Your Outdoor Space

into a Peaceful Retreat by Marty Wingate, offers advice on how to

keep the world from encroaching on your garden oasis.

If you hate to mow, The Edible Front Yard: the Mow-Less, Grow-More

Plan for a Beautiful, Bountiful Garden by Ivette Soler, should be on

your must-read list.

For those of us with less time and energy, Felder Rushing’s Slow Gardening: A No-StressPhilosophy for

All Senses and All Seasons is a must-read.

The Library also has books for the youngest gardeners. Kids’Con-

tainer Gardening: Year-Round Projects for Inside and Outside by Cindy

Krezel and The Book of Gardening Projects for Kids: 101 Ways to Get Kids

Outside, Dirty and Having Fun by Whitney Cohen are just two of the

possibilities.

Finally, if looking at beautiful gardens has more appeal than actu-

Afternoon Craft: Paper Beads Monday, April 9 at 1pm at Clark House

Saturday, April 28 at 1pm at the Malta Branch

Come learn how to make paper beads for necklaces, bracelets, and other decorations. For ages 7-12. Supplies are limited, so please register.

Great Pumpkin Competition! Beginning Tuesday, April 24 at 4pm

at the Malta Branch

Can you grow the biggest pumpkin? Start with us by planting pumpkin seeds (we’ll provide the seeds and the supplies). We’ll incubate them – when they’re ready in May, pick them up to plant in a sunny spot that you (and a parent or guardian) pick out at home. In the fall, we’ll have a special awards ceremony for the big-gest, the prettiest, and the ugliest pumpkins!

The Magic Tree House Club

Come explore the world of Jack and

Annie! Our Magic Tree House Club

is designed for children in grades 1-4.

At each meeting we will introduce and explore one the many

stories in the series. Through activities and crafts children will

learn about the many different places Jack and Annie visit.

Extra copies of the week’s book will be available for check out

at Clark House after each meeting if the children/parents want

to finish reading the book at home.
