Principal: Mr Graeme Oke

From The Principal

Our Book Week celebrations certainly filled our week with a number of

activities. Students were enthralled by the magical illustrations that

Gwynne Jones created for the children’s picture book, “Don’t Think About

Purple Elephants” and the details of how an illustrator works with an

author in developing a children’s picture book. They were also spellbound

by the Tony Bones performance of one of the shortlisted books, ‘The

Stone Lion’. The Book Fair was well supported and the books on order

from McDonald’s Bookstore in Maitland will be here tomorrow.

And yet again, the Book Character Parade saw some great costume

efforts! Thank you to Ms Graham for her marvellous organisation of our

Book Week.

Thank you to the many families who chose one of the shortlisted books

for this year’s Children’s Book Council of Australia awards to donate to our

Library. We have appreciated the generous support of our families and

the legacy they leave for our Library.

Our choir have a wonderful opportunity to showcase their vocal talents

when they perform at the Red Cross Annual Conference being held at

Tocal College on Thursday, 13 August. The choir has been asked to

perform by the Vacy Red Cross Branch and they have a sweet selection of

songs to sing.

Next week students in Years 3 and 4 will be travelling to Taronga Zoo in

Sydney for a Zoo Snooz. The Zoo Snooz gives our students a unique

opportunity to see the animals at night-time, their feeding rituals and to

experience an early morning walk around the zoo before it opens to the

public.

On Friday 21 August, students from Kinder to Year 2 will travel to

Somersby to visit the Reptile Park.

Graeme

Dates to Remember Canteen News Working in the canteen yesterday it was shown time and time

again how polite the students are! Please and Thank You were

used without prompting and everyone lined up patiently for their

ice blocks and snacks. It was great to see and made my time in the

canteen more enjoyable.

Another big week for orders this week, it was great to see how

smooth the canteen operates with a large amount of orders, of

course our super-efficient volunteers play a big part in that. Thank

you to Melissa, Cassie and Karen for their time and effort this

week.

Woolworths Earn and Learn Promotion The Woolworths Earn and Learn promotion has begun. If you buy your groceries at Woolworths please collect as many stickers as you can and drop them into school. In previous years we have been able to redeem these stickers for a range of sports equipment and robotics resources for our school. A great way to translate the money we spend on groceries into resources to support your child's learning.

1/2 News Just a reminder that the children in 1/2 need to bring their

communication folder to school daily. This helps them to remember to

hand in important notes as folder check is part of our morning

routine. They always come home in the afternoon and I get the

children to place any notes for home into this folder. If you could help

the children follow this important routine it would be greatly

appreciated. Please remember this is a separate folder to their home

reader folder.

We had lots of fun dressing up in the 1/2 room last week for Book

Week. We thought you may like to see a picture of our favourite

characters.

1/2Greaves & 2 Graham The children have a small project to complete over the next few weeks. The information regarding this went home in their

homework books yesterday. If their homework book was not here the sheet went home in their bag. Any questions please

contact Mrs Greaves.

K - 2 Excursion The K - 2 excursion to Gosford Reptile Park is on Friday 21 August, 2015. Please ensure your permission note and payment

are sent in by Monday 17 August, 2105.

Breakfast @ Vacy Vacy School will be offering their students the chance to have a healthy breakfast at school each day. This is available to those children who leave early in the morning or miss their breakfast before they come to school. It is a totally optional service just like our normal canteen and will incur a cost of $1.00. The students will be able to choose between cereal, toast, seasonal fruit and milk to drink. Breakfast will be available daily from 8:30-9.00am at the canteen. Orders do not need to be placed prior to the day. All the students need to do is go to the canteen when they arrive at school and tell the assistants what they would like and pay their $1.00. We hope that this will assist families who are rushed in the mornings and those who have to leave at an early time to get here.

The Vacy Charity Cutting Day - Volunteers Needed

The Vacy Charity Cutting Day is coming around again on October 10 and we are looking for more volunteers and support from school families. This is one of the P&C’s biggest fundraisers each year and last year more than $3500 was raised for the school. You don’t have to be into horse-riding to get involved. We need volunteers in the canteen and people to help out running games for the kids over lunch. People to help set up and pack up are always welcome too. Fiona Hack has done a wonderful job running the food caravan for many years, but this is her last year behind the tongs and we would love to see another family step up to this important role. Many hands make light work so please get involved! On top of the great arena action, there is plenty of family fun on offer, with breakfast from 7.30am, through to a camp oven lunch, games for children, a jumping castle and all sorts of entertainment from live music to a billy boiling competition.

For more information or to get involved, please contact the P&C, Fiona Hack, Leesa Priestly or Adele Horn.

Gresford District Junior Cricket Club

This season Gresford Junior Cricket is proud to announce we are entering an under 10's team in the Maitland District Competition.

We are also looking for expressions of interest in forming an under 12's Gresford team.

With the coordinator of the Milo Cricket program moving on to coach the under 10's team we will need a new volunteer coordinator to continue to run the Milo Cricket program in Gresford for age groups 5-7. You will have the full administrative support of the current junior cricket committee and be provided with session by session guides to run the 10 week program.
