It happened in the fall of 1957 when I was a 17-year-old freshmen at Moody Bible Institute. Back in those early days each student had two weekly Christian work assignments. My assignments were at Cook County Hospital and Pacific Garden Mission. At the first meeting at the Mission the leader asked for a volunteer to preach in two weeks. I volunteered. It should be easy for me, after all, I had gone to church all my life. My father was in the navy and our family moved every two years to a new town. So I had worshipped in many different religious traditions (Presbyterian, Baptist, Evangelical Free, and non-denominational). All of these pastors based their sermons on a biblical text. So I started reading looking for an appropriate text and came across a passage that stated “open thy mouth and I will fill it.” Then I recalled that occasionally pastors had said “God gave me today’s message.” Ah! I said as a literalist, here was the solution to my upcoming sermon. I need not think about it or prepare any thoughts, I just had to open my mouth and God would speak. No need for plan B, in fact any efforts in that direction only reflected a lack of faith. The eventful day came and I was honestly excited to hear what God would say. Well, you can guess the rest. I stood up confidently and opened my mouth and no words came out. The leader suggested we sing a song and the homeless in the audience went to their evening meal earlier than usual. No doubt one of them mumbled “short is always better than a long sermon.” OK, you can stop smiling now. Maybe you have had a parallel experience. I am thankful for such moments because sometimes its in our embarrassments we learn our best lessons. Now I realize how important daily Bible reading is as God speaks through His written Word. I also research and over prepare for each talk. But preparation takes place in synergy with God’s help. My new motto is found in Proverbs 21:31 “Do your best, prepare for the worst—then trust God to bring victory.” Volume 8, Issue 1 The Shortest Sermon in Church History January 1, 2016 The Newsletter of Village Green Baptist Church Life on the Green PAGE 1 LIFE ON THE GREEN VOLUME 8, ISSUE 1 ~David Maas

It happened in the fall of 1957 when I was a 17-year-old freshmen at Moody Bible

Institute. Back in those early days each student had two weekly Christian work

assignments. My assignments were at Cook County Hospital and Pacific Garden Mission.

At the first meeting at the Mission the leader asked for a volunteer to preach in two

weeks. I volunteered. It should be easy for me, after all, I had gone to church all my life.

My father was in the navy and our family moved every two years to a new town. So I had

worshipped in many different religious

traditions (Presbyterian, Baptist, Evangelical Free,

and non-denominational). All of these pastors

based their sermons on a biblical text. So I started

reading looking for an appropriate text and came

across a passage that stated “open thy mouth and

I will fill it.” Then I recalled that occasionally

pastors had said “God gave me today’s message.”

Ah! I said as a literalist, here was the solution to

my upcoming sermon. I need not think about it or prepare any thoughts, I just had to open

my mouth and God would speak. No need for plan B, in fact any efforts in that direction

only reflected a lack of faith.

The eventful day came and I was honestly excited to hear what God would say. Well, you

can guess the rest. I stood up confidently and opened my mouth and no words came out.

The leader suggested we sing a song and the homeless in the audience went to their

evening meal earlier than usual. No doubt one of them mumbled “short is always better

than a long sermon.”

OK, you can stop smiling now. Maybe you have had a parallel experience. I am thankful for

such moments because sometimes its in our embarrassments we

learn our best lessons. Now I realize how important daily Bible

reading is as God speaks through His written Word. I also

research and over prepare for each talk. But preparation takes

place in synergy with God’s help. My new motto is found in

Proverbs 21:31 “Do your best, prepare for the worst—then trust

God to bring victory.”

Christmas Sharing Update

Christmas Sharing was a huge success. Participation from Village Green Baptist Church was at an

all-time high. We had great help in the buying of gifts, games, crafts, kitchen, and helping with the

wrapping. Many people who could not attend sent cookies and treats. It was great to see so many

people involved. Thanks to all!

We also had great cooperation from some retail stores—particularly Kohl’s. Once they heard what we

were doing they wanted to help in the form of additional discounts, etc. We ended up spending about

$65 per child but estimate we were able to get about $150 at retail value for our money by taking

advantage of sales and discounts offered.

We provided gifts for 45 children, many of whom would not have had gifts on Christmas morning. As I

helped one lady carry her gifts out to the car she stopped me and thanked our church for its generosity.

She said, “This is much more than I ever expected.”

I am sure other helpers heard comments like this as well.

It was great to see our people interacting with the families we were able to help. I am sure everyone who

participated got a taste of the Christmas Spirit.

Thanks again for supporting this program!
