Participation, Time, Effort, Incredible Ideas and Goals
Last week I was lucky enough to attend the Chapter President’s Council
Leadership Forum in Sacramento for two days. It’s always hard to leave our businesses, family and daily routine because of our obligations. We get stuck in the grind and sometimes forget about developing ourselves and focusing on our goals that can improve all those aspects of your life. I walked away with a renewed energy and commitment to
spend more time on thinking what legacy I want to leave behind.
The first step is to appreciate the people around us. With their help we can accomplish more than we can ever dream. I am just one person with an 8-hour work day (most days are 12 hours but let’s just simplify the math). If I can get two people in my company to help me drive improvement, innovation, and quality then the results of my 8-hour day just increased. That is much more time that can be leveraged for accomplishments. It doesn’t stop there, as we all have friends, family, and peers. Take another 10 people who can help you. We just added another 80 hours of potential help. You get the picture…expand the results of your personal workday by expanding the number of people dedicated to helping you accomplish your goals for that day.
Every task must have a committed allocation of time. By creating a time to tackle a task we improve the speed and quality of how it is
completed. We also show people that it’s important.
With everything we do there needs to be effort. If you want to complete a task it is important to do it constantly and with enthusiasm. It helps people around you know it needs to be done. Enthusiasm is also very contagious.
Incredible ideas to improve an aspect of your business or personal life can come from anyone. Don’t beat yourself up when you can’t think outside the box. Ask those around you what they think and what ideas they have. You will quickly find new inspirational ideas and new ways to discover them.
Goal setting is one of the most important things one can do to improve their personal and business life. Unfortunately, it is often the most neglected because we are so busy with the daily grind. We just keep running forward with our head down. Goals allow us to raise our heads and make sure we are running in the right direction and not out of bounds.
For me, the realization that I need to do more goal setting is the best thing to come out of the conference for my business. It is a hard fact that I have not shared my goals with most of the people around me. How am I supposed to get to the goal with a team that doesn’t know in which direction to run? I am making a commitment this year, this summer, this month, this week, today and now to share my goals to greatly improve the probability of achieving them. – Luis

LCIS Announces 30 Years of Serving Landscape Contractors• Introduces New, Exclusive Insurance Program in 2019
Landscape Contractors Insurance Services (LCIS) recently announced that they are celebrating their 30th year serving
the landscape industry. Formed in 1989 by a group of landscape contractors in order that their peers could access competitive insurance services, today, LCIS is the leading provider of insurance and business related services to the landscape community in the Western U.S.
According to Kim Ayala, President/CEO, a good part of LCIS’ success has been their deep understanding of the needs of the industry, and their continued commitment to giving rebates back to our Members. “Last year, we paid back rebates amounting to $960,000 to LCIS Members,” said Ayala. “That represents a +7% increase that our current Members enjoyed versus the prior year.”

CSLB Catches 169 Suspects in Statewide Stings
A series of statewide stings and sweeps by the Contractors State License Board (CSLB), netted 169 legal actions against
suspected licensed and unlicensed contractors as part of a national effort to warn consumers about risks of hiring unlicensed contrac-tors. The CSLB conducted three undercover sting operations and 46 sweep operations around California.
The enforcement actions, which took place between June 3 and June 25, 2019, were part of a nationwide effort coordinated by the National Association of State Contractors Licensing Agencies (NASCLA). These efforts were implemented to heighten consumer awareness about the importance of hiring licensed contractors and the risks of using those who are not, and ensuring that contractors follow all relevant laws related to workers’ compensation and down payments.
“Nationwide enforcement operations like this are critical to educating consumers about the risks they take if they hire someone who’s not licensed to work in and around their home and family,” said David Fogt, Registrar of California’s Contractors State License Board. “It also helps keep the playing field level for the over 285,000 licensed contractors here in California by working to limit unfair competition.”
In California, investigators from CSLB’s Statewide Investigative Fraud Team (SWIFT) partnered with several local law enforce-ment agencies to conduct three sting operations at homes in Rancho Cordova (Sacramento County), Paso Robles (San Luis Obispo County), and Campbell (Santa Clara County). Forty-six sweep operations were conducted in Alameda, Butte, Contra Costa, Fresno, Los Angeles, Mendocino, Monterey, Napa, Orange, Placer, Riverside, Sacramento, San Bernardino, San Diego, San Francisco, Santa Clara, and Sonoma counties.
For the stings, SWIFT investigators contacted suspects in several ways, including through their business profiles on social media and advertisements on craigslist.org. The suspected unlicensed operators came to the sting locations to place bids on projects like painting, concrete, ceramic and mosaic tile, flooring and floor covering, siding and decking, masonry, electrical, warm-air heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning, and tree services. Sweeps were conducted based on tips from consumers, and through coor-dinated efforts with partner agencies.
Of the suspects caught in the stings and sweeps, 37 individual cases were referred to a prosecutor after a thorough investiga-tion was made by CSLB. Additionally, 44 licensees were issued administrative citations. Also, 36 of the individuals were issued a fine for contracting without a license (Business and Professions Code (BPC) section 7028). In addition, 52 individuals received a “Notice to Appear in Court” (NTA) and may face misdemeanor criminal charges after being caught for breaking state contracting laws.
Of those issued an NTA, 51 suspects were found to be contracting without a license ((BPC) § 7028). In California, a state-issued license is required to perform any contracting work that costs $500 or more in labor and materials combined. The penalty for a first conviction is up to six months in jail and/or a fine of up to $5,000.
Thirteen may also be charged with requesting an excessive down payment (BPC §7159.5). In California, a home improvement project down payment cannot exceed 10 percent of the contract total or $1,000, whichever is less. This misdemeanor charge carries a maximum penalty of six months in jail and/or up to a $5,000 fine.
Also, 12 of the suspects issued a court date did not have workers’ compensation insurance for their workers, 45 may be charged for illegal advertising,
Consumers can get license info by running an “Instant License Check” on CSLB’s website. They can also get a list of licensed contractors in their area by using the “Find My Licensed Contractor” feature to search for licensed contractors by city or ZIP code. CSLB also recommends that consumers get at least three bids before hiring someone for the job.
CSLB operates under the umbrella of the Department of Consumer Affairs by licensing and regulating California’s over 285,000 contractors. In fiscal year 2017-18, CSLB helped recover more than $50 million in ordered restitution for consumers, making it one of the leading consumer protection agencies in the United States.

Celebrating Professionalism…Then and Now
June is extraordinary for exceptional, very special people. No two alike and each displaying individual creative talents. Each
of us is in the sixth month of the year as a dynamic and creative presence.
For the San Fernando Valley Chapter, this journey in profes-sionalism all began 60 years ago when a few men, yes, and women – wives – formed the Chapter and joined the California Landscape Contractors Association. We celebrated this special occasion and honored those Chapter members who forged our legacy, at the June 15 Awards Banquet and 60th Anniversary celebra-tion at Rancho Deluxe Movie Ranch in Canyon Country.
Our Chapter Founders embarked on a journey pathway newly traveled with great expectations and with Infinite Guidance. I celebrate all of us who have been a part of our Chapter’s growth and uniqueness.
Also celebrated that night was our 60th Landscape Beautification Awards program, one of the best in the state. So difficult it is for the judges choosing between spectacular projects with ever
so slight degrees of excellence in each category. This is a very special time for professionalism and quality displayed in the entries, which spoke for themselves quite well both during the judging and
later on the screen during the awards video.
I believe that there is a special “inner quality” that is put forth by each member of the working team of a project that translates into a winner. And the SFV Chapter is blessed with more than our share of these remarkably talented individuals.

Two Free CLCA MWEL Workshops Set for August 21 and 23
CLCA’S Mastering Water Efficient Landscapes (MWEL) is holding two FREE workshops where you can earn CEUs for
your APLD, IA, ISA and NALP certifications! The workshops are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 21 in Downey and Aug. 23 in Santa Monica. They include continental breakfast and lunch sponsored by the Metropolitan Water District (MWD) and the host agency.
Who should attend: Landscape contractors, landscape architects and designers, city planning and building code enforcement, and water agency conservation personnel.
Attendees will learn:• Review a relevant case study of California’s Model Water
Efficient Landscape Ordinance (MWELO)• Receive knowledge of MWELO’s most important elements• Have an understanding of soil, irrigation, water budgeting and
plant relationships• Have an understanding of overall water efficient landscape best
management practices (BMPs)• Participate in an interactive landscape water budgeting exercise• Participate in a question and answer session with proven
industry experts
The Wednesday, Aug. 21 workshop will take place at the SoCalGas Energy Resource Center, 9240 Firestone Blvd., Downey. It is sponsored by Metropolitan Water District and SoCalGas. There is a maximum of 70 attendees.
The Friday, Aug. 23 workshop will be held at Civic Auditorium East Wing, 1855 Main Street, Santa Monica. It also has set a maximum of 70 attendees. This workshop is sponsored by Metropolitan Water District and the City of Santa Monica.
