Unifying Clouds
What we spend our time thinking about
CloudFair 2012
We live in an era of unprecedented change
• Mainstream software applications continue to lose audience to pay as you go SaaS model
• Entrance / Exit is easy
• Participation is judged on business value
• New Cloud companies challenge the status quo
• Box, DropBox, Twitter, FaceBook etc
• Companies ‘assets’ are slowly diverging
• Online / offline
• Saas, Data, Social
CloudFair 2012
What is behind the transformation ?
• IaaS, PaaS, SaaS services lower the barriers to entry
• Smart Device penetration
• Personal SaaS culture permeating business culture
• Corporate behavior changing:
• Peer recommendation drive decisions
• Recognize the power of outsourcing
• Moving away from ‘self-administering’ to ‘hosted’
• “On the move” drives purchasing and infrastructure decisions
• Mobile and Cloud the two biggest combined / overlapping trends
CloudFair 2012
What challenges does this transformation present ?
• IT under pressure from execs to support a flexible Smart Device driven SaaS infrastructure
• Proliferation of Smart devices hard to manage and support
• Driven by BYOD type policies
• Data exists in Silos amongst SaaS Services, internal Apps and Messaging services
• Hard to locate or search amongst corporate data
• More data being stored in non traditional data sources
• Although data exists in email or archive it is “stuck” and not visible
‘My Cloud is better than your Cloud’
• SaaS Service Providers competing for you to move your data from one silo to another
• and invariably it is not easy to move
• and more are popping up every day…especially in the Cloud Storage space
• Companies show that they will potentially try and move provider / data based on just one feature missing
• “We want DropBox replication”
• “We can’t work with the DropBox files on iWork on our iPad”
• “Our Core business Apps need FTP support”
CloudFair 2012
What about legislation ?
• How do you add governance amongst the distributed sprawl of public / private cloud services
• HIPCA, FERPS etc
• and more are popping up every day…especially in the Cloud Storage space
• What about Country specific legislation ?
• Patriot Act
• Legislation regarding data staying within country borders ?
• Canadian Public Sector or Government body
• Australian business laws on customer privacy
• etc
CloudFair 2012
So how do we manage the sprawl of different SaaS and Data
Services ?
