Master Data Management (MDM)

Master data governance

It is crucial that after defining your MDM framework

(strategy, standards, processes, organization,

governance and technology), measures are taken

to ensure that external and internal changes that

are impacting your master data or MDM framework

are managed in a proper way. Master data

governance provides those measures, by building a

continuous cycle of master data quality and process

improvements.

In Deloitte’s point of view, a governance model

typically encompasses a strategic level, a tactical

level and an operational level. At the strategic level

there is sponsorship for master data management,

mostly within an executive council. At the tactical

level there is a governance board that approves,

monitors and improves the MDM environment.

Finally at the operational level, we find the

operational master data organization with the roles

involved in the execution of the various master data

maintenance processes. It is typical at this level

that adherence to defined processes should be

enforced, as this has the largest direct impact on

your data quality.

Master data is the foundation of all business

processes and business intelligence reports.

Everybody understands the importance of master

data; however it still seems hard to follow the

agreed governance rules on master data. Deloitte’s
